Please find below a prediction about the candidates for 2021-22 UEFA CL, EL and ECL finals.
Let's start this analysis with UEFA Champions League final, to be played in Paris on 28 May. Until a few days ago and before knowing the Villarreal - Liverpool assignment, a very easy prediction and expected name for the last act of the major competition for European clubs was Danny Makkelie (NED). The path that committee reserved to him looked to be a very clear clue of his selection for the final game. Then very likely something changed, and committee decided to appoint him for the semifinal. There can be still chances to see him in Champions League as well but it would be extremely particular. The Dutch will stay as strong name for the future. With the focus shifted on another name, according also to some rumors, it will turn out that Champions League final will be Clément Turpin (FRA). The French should be the name selected by commitee for the final in his home-nation. Two interesting facts to add: the last Champions League (at that time: European Cup) final referee from France was Michel Vautrot in 1986. Definitely a very long time, more than 35 years, and this could have played a role. In addition, we can remember the treatment he got during EURO. For sure very often things go in a very particular and unexpected way. We can't say that he didn't deserve that, but surely, after having handled Europa League final one year ago, and given also other circumstances, he was definitely not the first option for committee.
Regarding Europa League final, committee has surely several options, thank to the excellent progress of some referees this season. Personally, I would like to see, and that's my prediction, Szymon Marciniak (POL) . This would be a more than deserved reward for him, after having returned back on the old right track, by also showing very good performances in many big games. His path has been impressive this season, being very often appointed in top games with Italian teams (and we all know how much this can make it even more challenging than normal conditions), and he showed to deserve the trust by committee. After having been lost for a few years, now UEFA can rely again on him. Given the extremely long experience, I would say that assigning him to this final would be more than expected. To follow, surely the second name to be mentioned is Slavko Vinčić (SVN). A very similar path to the Polish, with big games and a great trust, even under the eyes of committee member. I think that if not Marciniak, he will get it. Moreover, we should not forget that another strong candidate, in my opinion on a similar level to Marciniak, would have been Ovidiu Hațegan (ROU). Let's wish him again a quick recover and hopefully we will see him again on the pitch on next seasons, and maybe at WC.
The third competition, Europa Conference League, will celebrate its first final this season. In this case my reasoning is based on the teams that have reached the game and the ones that have been eliminated,. Without an English team, and even more with an Italian team, I think that the option for committe will be a more than safe pair of hands with English Anthony Taylor (ENG). Despite of having officiated two UEFA final in quite recent times (Super Cup and Nations League), he has suffered for the presence of English teams in many competitions and his appointments have been clearly reduced by committee. This can be a signal. In addition, the experience at EURO had to end definitely too early for him, and the fact that he has been assigned to low profile games, even in Conference League, can give us maybe the final confirmation. So this is the final prediction. Another name to mention, based on performance, is surely István Kovács (ROU). In future he will have big chances of getting top assignments. Furthermore, a particular speech must be reported about Daniel Siebert (GER). In normal conditions and before the extremely discussed game he had in Champions League, I would have bet on him as perfect referee for this final: young, with a big trust by committee, and ready to officiate a final act, starting from the least sonorous one. Unluckily, throwing him in a game like Atlético - City, didn't help committee in protecting him, rather, this was too much gambling. He could have had by far a very regular path in which all people would have expected him in a semifinal of either EL or ECL. This couldn't happen due to the management by committee, but first of all he showed that he needs still time before handling certain games.
So, final predictions are
Champions League Final: Clément Turpin (FRA)
Europa League Final: Szymon Marciniak (POL)
Europa Conference League Final: Anthony Taylor (ENG)

ReplyDeleteAchievements by main candidates so far:
ReplyDeleteTurpin - EL (21)
Makkelie - EL (20)
Marciniak - SC (18)
Taylor - SC (20), NL (21)
Vincic, Hategan, Kovacs, Siebert - 0
If Taylor will be a final referee UCL, and in future we have a CL final without english team, he will be a final referee 4 times, not too much?
I think that one final is going to Vincic (big trust, no SF).
CL - Turpin
EL - Marciniak
ECL - Vincic
I hope Taylor or Oliver will officiate UCL final for all English final if every year English team advances to final, and UEFA change the rule referee can officiate the home team ONLY if both of the team are from the home country, for example Taylor can officiate MU vs Chelsea in UCL but he cannot officiate MU vs Madrid
DeleteLiverpool - Real Madrid: Clément Turpin (Marciniak)
ReplyDeleteFrankfurt - Glasgow Rangers: Slavko Vincic (Jovanovic)

ReplyDeleteNow watching Copa Libertadores match between Bragantino and Velez..
90+2 min., one of the worst management of altercation I have ever seen.
Cross comes in, attacker challenges for the ball, but GK is faster and they both collide.
Then GK pushes attacker, multiple players were involved in this mini brawl and forget about cards, not a single warning about that type of behaviour.
So glad that we in Europe are having much better standards with our officiating.
Vincic has a final, definitely. Him being out from the Semi finals when the choices are very limited is a clear signal to me.
ReplyDeleteLast year as 4th official in the UEL final, a QF final at the EURO's, a QF CL. A normal path to the UEL final.
I predict Marciniak as 4th official in the CL final. He will be a strong contender for CL final 2023 (together with Makkelie and Taylor).
Taylor is the best and most experience choice for the UECL final in Tirana. Never a 100% certainty, as he already had the NL final and play-off final this season. Based on a development strategy, not a bad choice to give it to a younger referee either. But my 1st prediction is Taylor - no risks and he was pretty unlucky to be out from so many CL games due to the English teams in competition.
Kovacs might have a good chance to get the Supercup this year.
So I hope next seasons UEFA change the rule referee can officiate the home team ONLY if both of the team are from the same country, for example Spainish referee can officiate Spain vs Spain team in UEFA competitions but cannot officiate Spain vs non Spain
DeleteMy predictions:
ReplyDeleteChampions League: Clément Turpin

Think it has become clear that the Final refs would not have had a semi final in any competition.
The only other one would have been Siebert for me for possibly the Conference League Final.
Dear mates,
ReplyDeletemaybe you have the experience by yourselves, maybe you know an Elitereferee, but even if not:
Do you think, Marciniak, or other refs in his position, would be proud or glad being appointed as a 4th Official?
Being so near to the very top of refereeing, one could think, that there is no "second place" for them and no pleasure in assisting a direct competitor. What are your thoughts?
I had the same thought. Marciniak is a very experienced referee and had a good season over all. Or imagine Makkelie as 4th official in the CL final - after his performances in the most challenging games - assisting Turpin. That would be pretty sour. Not gonna happen, I think. He already attended CL final as VAR, but still, I get your point. It can feel as disqualification when the referee on the sideline had a better season than the ref on the pitch.
DeleteAt the same time, it can be a motivation as well. Being appointed as 4th official is a strong signal that a CL final is coming in near future. I remember that Turpin was with Mazic (2018), Lahoz with Skomina (2019).
IMO it has the appearance that UEFA/commmittee created a list of referees that will officiate the CL final year after year, and they are strictly sticking to that order, without caring too much about performance.
JV, do you think there would be any chance for Marciniak to say "Roberto, please no"?
DeleteIn terms of motivation: really good point!
Bad idea... It won't benefit his career
DeleteIn terms of this post:
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the ref committee will feel too bad regarding Siebert's performance in Madrid. He didn't make any crucial mistakes, kept being calm (and therefore got control back fast and durably) and most important: even in relation to Makkelie, which performed (of course in a quite different match) in Paris absolutely stunning, Siebert got way less reactions by press or other medias.
I don't think as well, that it was a mistake by sending him into this match, as we all will see, if he can "recover" (as it is really needed; I don't think so), or if he will improve in these kinds of situations. It's like a railway switch: One way he could become one of the best, another way he remains "one among many".
The reason why he won't be the man in the middle will be more the reason, that he already had a final this season, that others will deserve it more, that he will intend his first WC and - last but not least - political reasons.
I think Turpin for UCL is safe.
Marciniak for EL, and Taylor for ECL.

I would find it quite interesting, if there would be a topic/post in future about neuropsychiatric disorders in refereeing. As for example: ADHD influences/changes brain activity in a manner triggering the sense of justice, expanding the ability of perception and, sometimes, ADHD also increases the intention to participate in social tasks.
And they tend to do jobs beeing highly stimulating, structured, and fast paced. Maybe you already got my point: I wouldn't be surprised that not just a few of European best referees could have it, besides I don't know enough of them (only very few) to know their personality or their behavior in privacy.
As well, I don't think, that there are no other "disorders" which have the potential of influencing the abilities of referees.
And of course, ADHD and other disorders won't make better referees (as these normally have also (huge) disadvantages).
But it could be very interesting to make a topic about it, as maybe one of the followers here, or even maybe one of you, can tell about it, what could also help younger referees with or without disorders. As well, such a topic could and would help, to free this complete topic of taboos or being ashamed by affected referees. And at least the last point would be a huge benefit for all of us and the refereeing by itself.
It is true that according to appointments one could say that Vincic is maybe ahead of Marciniak as candidate for EL final, because he didn't officiate in the very late stages while Marcinak got CL semifinal, and this assignment could be read in a way like a final, but to be honest, having to make a choice between the two, I think that the Polish has very strong arguments. Very likely one of them will be fourth official in Champions League final. Also, if Marciniak gets EL final, this would mean that committee has decided for the three finals in different times, assuming that Turpin was already selected at that time for CL final. We will see.
ReplyDeleteCüneyt Çakır and his team ( Bahattin Duran and Tarık Ongun ) are together in charge of a Turkish Super League match this week.
ReplyDeleteIf one expects the Europa League final NOT to be handled by Carlos del Cerro Grande, I would rather see Jesus Gil Manzano than him in the Conference League final. In my opinion, this competition might be open for referees without any experience in a European Championship or another major international competition so far. Having a look at the appointments this season, I would not be completely surprised to see the latter at the World Cup. In this case, he would need a "major achievement" in his palmares.
ReplyDeleteUCL- Clement Turpin
ReplyDeleteUEL- Slavko Vincic
UECL- Carlos del Cerro Grande
There have been posted many interesting theories on this blog recently to motivate why Makkelie won’t be the referee in the CL final this season.
ReplyDeleteTo sum up:
- The angriness of the PSG president, the agressiveness towards the Ref team at the dressing room and, even more coincidentally, the president being close to the UEFA president. If this is the main argument, UEFA should be very ashamed. I hope, the president apologized for his unacceptable behaviour and that the career of a brilliant referee won’t be frustrated by the ‘unpunished’ man. A referee is not allowed to defend himself in the press, but if the referee attacks a president, he will be suspended for the rest of his life. So unfair…
- Rosetti caring too much about headlines and Makkelie’s name will generate more headlines before a first whistle than Turpin’s. Personally, I hope this is not the “main” reason. Controversies and ‘grey areas’ are part of this beautiful profession. IMO Makkelie has been exposed to more delicate/sonorous matches than Turpin, so it ain’t that weird that his name generates more headlines... Isn’t the Dutchman is a bit “unlucky” that he often takes crucial (correct!) decisions against the team that (in the end) are losing the game? Consequence: headlines, presidents speaking of scandals, instead of focusing on the weak performance of their own team or goalkeepers. I remember that all crucial KMI’s by Makkelie were backed by the majority on this blog.
In general, I think it’s a disgrace that some bad referees (without mentioning names…) are still appointed to matches because they avoid controversies. Ugh.
- Contact with Donnarumma was assessed as a foul. If this is true, it is an even bigger joke, since referees were forced by Rosetti himself to apply the 2022 guidelines in relation to body contacts, dare to let the teams play fluent football, making the game as attractive as possible, being at the background at all costs, keeping all 22 players on the pitch, blah blah blah.
- Bjorn Kuipers officiated the EURO 2020 and Makkelie not a candidate for any ‘grand final’ in near future because of his passport. I’m not going to waste words on this.
- Batta stepping back, Kuipers taking his place...
- Age and motivation purposes. Makkelie very young and has 5-6 years to go. Could be possible to avoid Kassai-cases, but Turpin is just a few months older. Weak argument.
- Everything is calculated; UEFA has a list with names in a fixed order, wants to keep all nations happy, and will only deviate in case of unexpected circumstances or terribly bad performances. :D
The fact that Rosetti appointed Makkelie to a risky, tight RMA-PSG is for me a strong argument that Makkelie wasn't their anticipated ref (for wahtever reason). Ref committee repeating the appointment strategy used at EURO 2020, which I don't like at all... Keeping their favourite carefully under the radar and burning the chances of other strong contenders. I prefer the performance principle, to have a pool of 3-5 candidates and assign them all to a final test in a sonorous return game, as a final test. Fair chances to all.
We will never find out the real reason, and probably it is a combination of multiple cirumstances, but in any case, I dislike all the reasonings above and this whole thing stinks. :-)
Anyway, all the best to the Frenchman. He is a very good referee..!
Based on the appointments in autumn/winter 2021, I assume that committees main focus was on Danny Makkelie as the first candidate for the 2022 CL final. His appointments were quite safe. Matchday 6 subscibes that argument. Makkelie with already qualified Liverpool, Turpin in a risky Porto-Atletico.
DeleteIf I may add another argument:
On 14 November 2021, Portugal lost against Serbia (1-2) and ended 2nd in the group. On 26 November 2021 (draw), it was decided that Portugal had to play the Play-offs against two very strong opponents: Turkey and Italy/North Macedonia.
Imagine Portugal being OUT and some journalists still blaming Makkelie for not seeing Cristiano’s goal in Belgrade. Too sensitive. The play-off final was played at 29 March, so no time to wait and see. I think, this could be an argument to move their focus to Turpin in 2022, to keep him under the radar.
@Anonymous "Makkelie wasn't their anticipated ref (for wahtever reason)."
DeleteI disagree. Then how do you explain the appointment in Tiraspol? For me this one is the clear signal that he was the main chose for UCL final at the beginning of the KO stage.
@ JV: good one. That would be a good argument "to change course"
Delete@Matei: The appointment in Tiraspol was to keep Makkelie in shadow for something big -> RMA-PSG on 9 March. Committee did the exact same with Taylor and Siebert -> appointments in Conference League before the important WC play-offs.
If Makkelie was still anticipated in February, I think they would've assigned Taylor to the risky RMA-PSG.
Your theory makes sense and seems possible but I see the things a little bit different. My counter-argument is this:
DeleteScenario I: Makkelie was not planned for the final: Then obviously Rosetti would have counted on him in QF too. Then why to take the risk to appoint him in Tiraspol right before the big game(considering that the appointments are made in advance, and not after the first leg)? Why not simply give him only the UCL game, without other complications?
Taylor was not as this game because he was kept/shielded for the WC playoff final - the expected Italy-Portugal which didn't happened. As Makkelie could not offciate this one, Taylor had to be at this game with any price, this is why Rosetti hasn't risked with him not even in UEL in February.
And now Scenario II: I still believe (probably I am not the only one) that Makkelie was planned for the final.
So my theory is that the 2 games (Madrid & Tiraspol) should have compensated all the KO stage, without other games in QF and SF in UCL for Makkelie, maybe one more game in UE(C)L and then directly the final in UCL. After that game in Madrid, obviously things changed. I am not sure when though. Before or after Turpin`s appointment to the high profile Chelsea-Real? I'd say rather before. This one might have been the final test for him, Hugh Dallas was the observer.
But again, both scenarios are possible. I respect and other opinions but I think that my guess is closer to reality.
Thanks Matei !
DeleteIt's all pure speculating and I understand your arguments. The appointment strategy is a bit weird, to say the least. Something happened in between that made this commitee change directions.
- Makkelie's appointment in QF conference doens't make sense at all. Why protecting him after a great (correct) decision and "masterclass" in R16 CL?
- Why using Siebert - one of my fav's - with Atletico in his first QF ever (in a return leg). Seriously? That's ridiculous.
- Clement Turpin is one of my favourite referees at the moment. I want him to officiate a CL final, but just not this season. This is pushing him way too much. It feels like 'throwing him to the lions', without a semi final experience (this used to be the 'regular path'). Turpin was never used in a sonorous "return leg" (the biggest game of the round) the last 2-3 years. After the retirements of Skomina, Brych, Kuipers, he is a top 5 referee at the moment, however, a CL final is something different and requires a specific experience. The pressure will be more tensed and hugher than ever, the whole world will be watching, he will be under a magnify glass and you want a referee that is not influenced by anybody or any circumstances whatsoever. His (player) management didn't convince me in POR-ATM. At the EURO (Russia-Denmark) he was clearly affected by the crowd. I'll be cheering for him, always, because I like him, but I'm afraid at the same time because he is pushed too much and committee has a ridiculous appointment strategy. Why not appointing Turpin to a SF last year? I don't get it.
I just can't follow this committee choices, and Makkelie's treatment.
I hope:
ReplyDeleteUCL Makkelie or Marcinak or Siebert
Alternative non European referee maybe Esteban Ostorich(Uruguay) or Alireza Faghani(Iran) or Abdulrahman Ahmed Jassim(Qatar)
UEL or UECL I don't care
Maybe David Yareboinen from PNG
Deletesureeee.....That would be like uefa appointing a referee from Malta, Cyprus or Faroer, do you believe in these fairy tales yourself?
DeleteI hear that Hakim Aqa Shirzad from Afghanistan is already en route to Europe in order to referee CL final.
DeleteOT
ReplyDeleteMatej Jug (UEFA 1st) will handle the Athens Derby on Sunday between AEK and Panathinaikos. His assistants are Vukan and Vidalia. VAR is Sagrkovic (SVN).
Andris Treimanis (UEFA 1st) will handle the relegation derby Apollon - Lamia. His assistants are Gudermanis and Spasjonnikovs. VAR Is Jug.
Finally Valentin Zelezov (Bulgaria) will handle the SL2 PO between Veria and Levadiakos. His assistants are Venev and Doynov.
DeleteThis appointment shows that Clattenburg has zero respect on Greek referees. There are 19+55 referees on the 2 top categories and yet he brings a foreigner. What is the reason? To keep the teams quiet? Great logic. He should really go. UEFA must intervene and sent him home.
Off topic: the play-off games in June that involve Ukraine will be something special, isn't ??
ReplyDeleteI think, this will be very delicate. Somehow, it reminds me of Denmark at the Euro's after the Eriksen incident. Denmark - they had so many goodwill from football fans all over the world.
Just think about a referee taking a crucial decision against Ukraine.. Will he be screwed for life? He needs some balls of steel, for sure.
Tbh, if I was a Elite, I'm not sure I'd like to be in the middle of that game..
So I wonder who will officiate the SF and F. What do you guys think?
Maybe you all remember the story of Serhiy Bekker in 2018. He is now refugee in Italy, due to the war in his country, he is safe and in good health. https://www.facebook.com/Law5TheRef/posts/1488120101659881
ReplyDeleteUCL Turpin
ReplyDeleteUEL Vincic
UECL Marciniak
I will stay with Makellie as main candidate for UCL final. For UEL final I predict Vincic, for UECL final my prediction is Taylor
ReplyDeleteMy prediction would be:
ReplyDeleteUCL: Clement Turpin (seems fix)
UEL: Istvan Kovacs (to make him ready für the World Cup instead of Ovidiu Hategan, even more after his excellent UCL semi-final performance)
UECL: Jesus Gil Manzano (this competition could be open for "shooting stars" and he could even be a candidate for the World Cup without a too long palmares so far).
For me, it would not make much sense to "waste" Anthony Taylor for the UECL final: He has much experience and such an appointment could barely be considered as another "highlight" for him. I would rather save him for an UCL or UEL final without participation of a team from England/Scotland. Also in comparison with Michael Oliver, such an assignment would (in my opinion: wrongly) indicate that the latter is several classes below him (taking also the Nations League final into consideration).
I didn't follow yesterday's matches (or the ones from the day before yesterday). Okay, we can exclude JGM then ...
DeleteI Think that Turpin wont deserve the CL final, if Rosetti appoint him for the final IT will be politician decison

ReplyDeletedo you think cüneyt cakir still has a chance at the world cup after his comeback in the super league?
nope
Deletehttps://streamja.com/lXK1w
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about this situation? For me foul should have been whistled in favor of Lazio (contrary decision) and the card could have easily been red. I think that it was wrongly perceived by offiicials, I especially blame the missing alertness by fourth official.
I agree with you in all aspects.
DeleteDue to the obviously wrong perception of a potential RC foul, even a VAR intervention seems possible (but borderline, whether it would be adequate or not)
Those situations are hard to assess. It reminds me of a Del Cerro play in the Conference League semifinal. IMO it is poorly evaluated, the fault is the other way around and minimum YC.
DeleteFoottackle by SAM #11 which must result in a YC. LAZ #29 didn't deserve a YC
DeleteDo you think there should be a seperate thread each week to discuss the games of the weekend? We could all upload clips we find of incidents for example Liverpool v Spurs possible red card for Fabinho? https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ukwmcf/fabinho_foul_on_son_yellow_card/
ReplyDeleteGood day,
ReplyDeleteLast Wednesday, I watched Daniele Orsato in charge of Real M.- Man.City. The level of difficulty of that game was without a doubt very high. I reckon, the difficulty of this game comes close to a Champions League final. Daniele Orsato, not in his best physical shape but a well-respected authority, was able to compensate the lenient disciplinary approach with his personality, but he had to work his ass off to keep things calm.
One serious question to the well-informed experts here.
Q: Can you guys explain what makes Clement Turpin one of the best referees in the world right now?
I reckon, his international season was decent and steady. I can’t recall any controversies. On the other hand, I can’t recall any 9/10 masterclass performances, or any games when I was blown away by him.
So, maybe I missed something and I’m just curious to hear your opinions. What aspects of his game makes him one of the best referees atm?
Is his tactical approach, card management or foul detection better than other top elites? Is he a better manager or stronger personality than guys like Taylor, Marciniak, Makkelie? Or is his decision making and evaluation of important KMI’s better and more common sense?
What are his strongest aspects as a referee? I’m curious to hear your honest opinions. Can’t wait to analyze him in the finals. Thanks in advance for your input :-)
IMO Turpin is a very good referee, but a weak(er) manager than Marciniak or Makkelie.
DeleteWill be interesting to see his management of hot heads and whether or not he can handle the pressure.
Its surprises me that he will referee the final TBH.

OT Second penalty for Venezia - OMG is that possible to happen in Italy??? There was OFR, ref decided not to change his original decision, but that was such a clear, clear dive that can not be more clean! Very small contact, nothing really, player make a step and decided to fell down. He cheated the ref, but he didn't want to change his decision, even though he was bad positioned and didn't see the incident properly. For me this referee has nothing to do more in Seria A, he doesn't deserve it.
ReplyDeleteYou don't know Livio Marinelli, would be a too long story to write about :)
DeleteCan you write the short version? I am curious!
DeleteMarinelli is a very particular referee who had a very significant change of style in recent times. Until the beginning of this season we could say that he was a very similar referee to the "old" Maresca, for people who know him: zero tolerance, free cards, too authoritarian style, but indeed recently he changed his style of refereeing. Sltep by step, he went into Rocchi's grace thanks to good performances, where his way of working and the management of the players has been very often praised, but unfortunately something of his character has remained: he is quite intolerant towards the OFR, and he hasn't good relationships, at least so far, with the calls from the VAR. It had always happened in Venice in a Venezia-Inter a few months ago: he had made an annoyed face before making an OFR at the last minute of the match, because he had refereed well and this thing spoiled his performance. But anyway at that time he had decided correctly after the monitor. Today his desire to stay on the decision has prevailed. Undeniable and very clear looking at his body language during OFR, extremely long. The penalty is absolutely soft, we could say non-existent, but he wanted to confirm it out of stubbornness. Unfortunately he has to polish this aspect a lot, Rocchi is working hard on it. Before he becomes a very reliable referee, however, he could have to spend some more time. However, there is now talk of him as international referee together with Sozza for 2023, with Ayroldi a bit stopped, having to wait for another year. Given his age, this would be logical for some aspects (Ayroldi 1992, Marinelli 1984, Sozza, 1987). But today Marinelli lost a lot of points in Rocchi's eyes in my opinion. Curiosity for those interested: he is a marshal and has been on missions in Afghanistan with the Italian army, for this reason, he has a more than strong character.
DeleteAldo, Maresca chamgrd his style quite a lot, even for some average refs he is way too lenient, I watched him in Derby Della Lanterna, stuff he was forgiving was shocking to me, old Maresca would nevwr forgive some of the fouls that happened in that match.
DeleteOne can indeed wonder about the fact that most of the referees have to change themselves and their attitude, to officiate at high level in both domestic leagues and international competitions, because nowadays football is more belonging to clubs than being a sport itself... that's a pity in a way.
Delete+1 Chefren. It feels like we have more of a show than a match, more of a stage manager than a referee, in top football these days. Especially in this UEFA knockout stage.
DeleteFootball is more important than refereeing, we should remember that, but it is still a very sad thing in my opinion. Until 10/20yrs ago we had sth really special and non-synthetic in both elite football+refereeing!
Thanks for replying to my query Chefren :)
DeleteDear god, disgraceful weekend for the Dutch referees this weekend. Nijhuis drew a wrong offside line as VAR yesterday, today Gözübüyük gives an absolutely ridiculous penalty to Feyenoord against PSV, in the last seconds of the game. Big influence on the relegation as wel ass the title battle.
ReplyDeleteand besides, Gözübüyük didn't want to speak to ESPN to tell about this decision.
ReplyDeleteWithout being too long, for me Di Bello was simply excellent in Salernitana - Cagliari, and I suggest to refereeing lovers (Mikael, first of all), to watch this game in full because it is something very strong. The most difficult match of the season so far in serie A. We can expect Di Bello as referee for Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, I think, alternative name Valeri. But after this season, I think Di Bello would deserve it. What I can also point out is that before today he had had some poor performance in last appearances, differently from the beginning and almost all the middle of season, in which he had been always excellent. Perfect work by Mazzoleni as VAR today as well.

Serious mistake by Nihjuis when marking the offside lines. As for Gözübüyük, very poor impression. It seems incredible to me that he did not draw any cards in that brawl between players. And on the penalty kick, he doesn't offer any credibility, he's shaky in his decision, very insecure. I didn't like what I saw.
DeleteWow. Gozubuyuk - at first shaking his head, not whistling a penalty. Then FEY players start to surround him, which obiously influences him and he decides to whistle a very delayed penalty kick. No way this was based on any input from his assistents - he was in a perfect position. Obviously suffering from the Kuip pressure as well. Unbelievable.
DeleteJust compare Gozubuyuk in this scene with the fierce and confident Danny Makkelie being mobbed by Villareal players - not influenced or impressed at all. The difference between these two refs is immense..?
The discussed situations from Venezia - Bologna:
ReplyDelete16' https://streamff.com/v/61c638
Excellent advantage and then penalty for DOGSO, YC to keeper, I really liked the body language while whistling it.
73' https://streamff.com/v/fa2eaa
Penalty confirmed after OFR. It is very interesting to hear English commentator's opinion, indeed he is not 100% wrong. In addition to what already written yesterday above, I must clarify something to make this situation clear for all: Rocchi this year has started a battle against soft penalties and he hates when a referee whistles it. He considers such situations like clear and obvious mistakes, and he hasn't problems in forcing a bit the protocol. According to it, indeed one could say that this penalty should have been confirmed, because the small touch after having hit ball existed. But this is definitely not enougn and a very wrong penalty for almost all people... Marinelli didn't want to change idea.
16' - I have a big problem with that tackle by #32 where advantage is applied. First, it looks like it's DOGSO, so I would expect a yellow card for that alone (due to advantage application). But perhaps more importantly, watch the replay from behind the goal line.(starting around 0:42). It's a horrendous challenge. He launches himself in the air and lands on the back of the attacker's right leg/ankle. If that doesn't endanger the safety of an opponent, nothing does.
DeleteI know it's almost an impossible call to make and it was impossible in the old days. But with VAR, that has to be a red card.
@usaref. I think YC would have been appropriate for a reckless challenge. The defender slips and that causes a weird foul. But the fact that it was unintentional and no studs made contact in a dangerous manner makes this a YC for me.
DeleteI think this is a situation where the myopic focus on "studs" makes us worse referees. The defender crashes into the back of the attacker's achilles from behind, with significant force, when the attacker has no opportunity to brace himself. Honestly, having an opponent's leg/shin come crashing down on your heel can be more painful/dangerous than studs contact.
DeleteI'm sympathetic a little to the idea the defender slipped. But only a little. He was always going to tackle from behind. The fact that the slip makes the foul worse or more weird is true, but the defender still has to be responsible for his body once he goes into this action. Upon slipping, he could have chose not to challenge the opponent--understanding he was never going to get the ball. He didn't. And the consequences could have been catastrophic to the attacker's safety.
@73': Is there a similar discussion about the penalty for Fiorentina tonight? Because I think, the amount of contact was even less than in Venezia - and it was only given after VAR intervention.
DeleteIn the Fiorentina penalty tonight there’s an another aspect which is interesting, eg Guida signaled an advantage after the alleged foul. Can Var still intervene if referee has signaled the advantage?
DeleteYes Philipp, there is a big discussion and all people are convinced about VAR mistake, this was definitely soo soft for an intervention, this time Rocchi should assess the call by VAR as mistake, then after what had happened on Sunday, very difficult for Guida to stay with his original call of no penalty. About the advantage, indeed we can discuss, in my opinion the protocol is not clear about that, but I tend to think that VAR simply called because it was a clear and obvious mistake for him (I don't expect more complex reasoning by some VARs, given their level, sorry to say that...), and that's should be absolutely wrong. In case I will inform you about the updates.
Delete73 I don't like seconds 18 to 21 at all. Players shouldn´t touch referees but also not the other way around!
Delete@Chefren. What you think of Gozubuyuk penalty above?
In Italy wouldn't have created so mush astonishment like in Netherlands, you know how it "works" with handballs here. I think that the neutral "Italian" eye could say that this was a penalty not to be whistled, but not 100% wrong. According to that, a VAR in Italy would be supported for the decision taken by van Boekel (no intervention). What I don't like is the decision making process, at first nothing, then big protests and change of decision, it looks like Serdar Gozubuyuk wasn't strong enough in staying with his original idea, or maybe only after he thought that he had missed a clear penalty. We can't say what would have happened without protests, but my idea is that he would have played on.

As you know, I reported it many times here on the blog during the season, AS Roma members this year are very nervous about referees mistake in serie A. The last incident they mention is the penalty we discussed about, in Fiorentina - Roma. Mourinho attacked VAR for having called referee. I think UEFA committee will take into account that, and also for this reason, they will assign Taylor. Another name would be very surprising. I also read that there are many discussions about a few tickets and the organization of the game. Maybe UEFA expected a less sonorous game than this one, on paper this scenario could be more challenging than Europa League for the referee, considering the teams we will see in Tirana if compared to the ones in Sevilla. Also, Roma very proud of having reached the final, I think that in a way UEFA underestimated a bit this tournament, let's remember at first that VAR was expected only in final.

DeleteActually he says that there will be a spanish team in the final. Could be a VAR team, could just mean Velasco as observer.

ReplyDeleteThe public reaction is worrying in Turpin`s case. Just read the comments on Twitter. Of course I disagree with most of them, especially with the insults. But I hope that Turpin will not crack under pressure. Anyway, good luck to him!
