  2. We can be pretty sure that Kovacs has been replaced now.

Lindhout’s management is awful though. On Wednesday he has to travel from Bodø to Tel Aviv (is that a two-stops-flight?). Particular.

    3. HONDA : via Oslo-Frankfurt 06:45 arrive at 19:05 in Tel Aviv. Not bad also via Oslo-Istanbul

    4. Boo hoo, you are an international referee and they make you travel by planes. Really shocking.

    5. It’s not the best preparation before an important game. Traveling for > 12 hours is exhausting.

    6. I don’t really understand the fuss. Maybe not ideal, but nothing serious either. This has happened a number of times to a number of referees the last few years. Necessary? Probably not. Big deal? Definitely not.

  3. Zwayer's ability to so easily switch between being seen as candidate for demotion (as if... but), then quickly one of the ≈15 top referees in all Elite group again is quite remarkable, surely? :D

    1. Very good observation, it is indeed extremely difficult to understand the real consideration that committee has in him, let's also consider the story about his past that came back in recent times. Basically I think he is a quite good referee, very often he showed some controversial performance, especially some seasons ago, but basically to me he is a very strong German name, even more than Stielera and Aytekin (this is very easy to say). A possible competition with Siebert would see still Zwayer in advantage for his experience, to me he was always the German nr. 2 after Brych.

      Delete
    2. A political background?
Now that Siebert is recovering, Zwayer gets a very good assignment. On the opposite, when Siebert performs well and has good assignments, Zwayer is suddenly treated as a lower Elite?

      Delete
    3. Zwayer Nr. 2 in Germany? If we consider his national performances, this is ridicolous. His marks in kicker and other magazines sre low average. All Players being asked end of the season rated him on place 19 of 24. His arrogance, his lack of a clear foul detection, his talent of putting himself often in the centre, his problems with teamwork, many fractions between him and his colleagues, and his unclear "maybe-relations" to Hoyzers bet-mafia in Berlin... Sorry, but he should be very thankful that he is still refereeing in Eliteclass.
Its a shame that theclear number one of Bundesliga, Deniz Aytekin has decided to end his international career cause of family reasons right now. He is continuing in Bundesliga, but wants to see his family more often and so 1 game at weekend is enough. He also is head of a lawyer-company and of a fitnesscenter-ckmpany as well and needs time for that, too.
But believe me, Sven Jablonski from Bremen, who. Just got the FIFA-badge, will soon walk in his footsteps. And with Florian Badstübner we have a very!!! promising young talent in the background, who is crystalclear enforcing law, but the players still appreciate that his line is obvious and clear.
And Siebert is a really good ref, so I am very optimistic, we in Germany have no problems with our refs in future...

    4. I think you are not seeing the matches I see. Not because I'm his fan, but many people can agree with me that he evoluted his performances. Also you are using Kicker grades? Lol, they hate him and always put his grade down exact to them criticize him and they also don't know anything of rules and refereeing at all. His performances are very good, his experience is amazing and he has a great fitness and great use of the rules. Review your content please :)

      Delete
    5. I refer to his many bad performances in Bundesliga. His international performances are a mixture from bad to good. Your name tells me that you are a fan of him. Thats ok! But dont pretend to be objective. He is not at all respected by most german players and his performances in Bundesliga confirm that.

      Delete
    6. I agree with @zwayerbrazil there

      Delete
  4. Despite of some controversial performances, Zwayer is clearly German nr. 2. I was 100% percent sure that he will get another chances. On the other hand, this autumn, you can expect very good appointments for trusted refs like Zwayer, CdCG, Gil Manzano, Bastien, Gozubuyuk, Massa(his case is a little bit particular, but Rosetti has to rush the process as there are good chances that Orsato will retire after WC) etc. It should not be a surprise if some of the referees that will go to Qatar will be kept in shadow sometimes.

  5. Does have a link for a full match replay of Kyzylzhar Petropavl vs. APOEL Nicosia, Siebert's Conference League qualifier last week? I'd cut clips from it if so (there is a very interesting scene where he verbally warns a coach, you can hear him talk in English very clearly); the only one online is in not great quality and audio out of time. Can report a good performance by the German, just slightly hesistant in some isolated scenes, but overall pretty strong in a fairly spikey tie.

Most relevant scenes were a PAI call in 1H, and reckless vs. VC striking scene in 2H, clips below:

    1. Okay, I just watched it again and maybe very clearly is an exaggeration :D I recorded the scene on my phone, video below. If you listen carefully, you can definitely make out what Siebert is saying (a shame that the Russian commentator talks over it somewhat). It was quite interesting for me, especially under the heading 'managing the technical areas', after we all remember what happened in his famous game last season.

    2. Thanks for the clips !

Seems Siebert had a good evening. Despite the high number of cards, The German simply had to show them. 70' is a mandatory caution for me, I'm still okay with no card in 89'.
It is quite clear that Siebert is not the most confident leader on the pitch (eg gestures in the 85' scene), he relies more on tactical approach/game reading. This might be an area for him to work.
Good to see the German hasn't been much troubled by his Man.City-Atlético QF - poor performance in a game he simply wasn't ready at all for - with the WC coming within 3 months, a strong form is almost everything he can ask for.

Btw the 78' and 83' clips are the same :)

  7. just trying to ask with a much better quality of answers than I asked elsewhere, the first question what is the most important thing for a country whose referee quality is very far behind even compared to its own neighboring countries to improve? In this case, I am from Indonesia, a country that is very fanatical in supporting its team but the quality of Indonesian human resources is very poor, in this case the referee problem which has become an annual disease since two decades ago. Neighboring countries already have elite referees such as Singapore with Muhammad Taqi Aljaafari Bin Jahari (will become VMO in Qatar), Malaysia with Mohd Amirul Izwan bin Yaacob (AFC Elite), and Thailand with Sivakorn Pu-Udom ("elite" VAR in AFC ). In this case Thailand has implemented VAR for a long time, Indonesia which wants to implement VAR is constrained by the problem of the very few FIFA licensed referees, even less than 5 in Indonesia and even this FIFA referee often causes controversy. Another question is how should VAR be applied to countries with "unique" or "problematic" conditions? Hope you understand the meaning of my questions. Here I try to show from other sources some mistake from the referee.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/ChNJmV6hFH0/, I don't know why it happened, I'm speechless
    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg6vmubBjAU/, clear simulation
https://www.instagram.com/p/CgY_WMFh1FP/, no penalty and clear handball
    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cev4C_bBshF/, no penalty

and many other controversies, including refereeing firmness (it is customary to leave the first SPA only a warning or no warning at all even if it should be clear YC) and the assistant referee's poor performance in the case of offside. In this season an additional referee was tried which in Europe was abandoned a few years ago, but it is clear that often it is not useful because often AAR is just a "sculpture" and the problem is the same (HR).

  8. Further clips from serie A games.

Lazio - Bologna (very challenging), referee Luca Massimi

    https://streamff.com/v/259fc5
Missed handball outside the box by keeper, VAR assessed it as clear DOGSO and called referee, I'm interested in your opinion. Would you be sure about the RC and not YC for SPA here?
AR2 should take the responsibility of the missed call, as it happened where you can see it from the sideline.

    https://streamff.com/v/4fbdb4
Penalty to Bologna, particular incident, live it looked like a possible foul by attacker, VAR confirmed the call. Well seen.

    https://streamff.com/v/85c309
Second YC to Bologna player for SPA. Correct decision at the end of first half.

Massimi had a very challenging context that surely helped him in making further experience. Apart from the crucial incident, he had the control of the game and this was very good. Lazio a more than problematic team, especially for young referees.

    Fiorentina - Cremonese:
    https://streamff.com/v/28b704
Correct RC for SFP by Sacchi. VAR supported.
After a negative end of previous season, the referee must recover and he had a good start in this game.

    1. What do we think of the penalty awarded to Juventus in 41. minute tonight? Maybe Chefren can provide a clip in due course?

    2. Juventus - Sassuolo
Easy game to officiate for A. Rapuano. M. Guida was VAR. I can highlight only two moments.

1' - Possible penalty for Juventus.
I feel that VAR would have supported the decision made by the referee, either penalty or not.

      41' - Penalty for Juventus
Pretty clear, nothing to add. It was not only the holding but legs contact too.

Despite the low difficulty of the game, it was (very) good performance by Antonio Rapuano. Foul detection and general approach were perfect for this game. I will let Chefren to take care of the video links.

    3. For me the 41. minute isn’t that clear. The holding occurs from both sides, the attacker significantly holds the defender’s shorts. Then the defender plays the ball which, admittedly, stays in playing distance of the attacker, and after that defender stumbles and attacker stumbles. I don’t see a really clear contact caused by the defender which made the attacker fall.
In the 1. minute situation I do see a clear contact which causes the attacker to stumble (though questionable whether punishable or not).

    4. Juventus - Sassuolo:

      1'
VAR supported play on, I can agree, however most of referees whistle in this case, considering especially the contact between legs.
      https://streamff.com/v/d56392

      41'
Penalty confirmed by VAR. Very likely due to legs action by defender, still very unclear situation and I think expected decision play on.
Interesting discussion about whether SPA, DOGSO, YC or RC, Genuine or not.
      https://streamff.com/v/02b6e8

All grey areas, should be fully correct work by VAR to support both calls.

Pleasantly surprising performance from Tierney, not often will Liverpool have a red card and drop points at home without Klopp complaining about the referee. Let’s see if, unlike before, Tierney can keep this up.

      6. Gozubuyuk is a big question mark for me, after he completely missed the 3rd round.

      Delete
    3. Indeed Taylor, Turpin, Marciniak and Mateu should be the sure names for next week.
The weird treatment of Soares Dias is based on his performance, very often disappointing, he still couldn't find a solid path, but when he is in a good form, he gets interesting assignments.
Gozubuyuk replaced and then no game for him in UEFA, did he get domestic assignments?

      Delete
    4. Yes, Gözübüyük had a game on both of the first 2 matchdays in the Eredivisie

    5. That could mean it was something related to UEFA if he will not get a play off.

    6. Yes, and I noticed, Gozubuyuk was replaced when they were still in Frankfurt.

I think we will see at least one referee with a double assignment. Especially if Makkelie replaced Kovacs, and they have to find a replacement for the Dutch as well. Maybe some chances for a referee in EL 1st leg, like Jovanovic or Siebert.

      Delete
    5. It’s always nice to watch these FIFA videos. Also to see the different personalities and the way the referees speak. For example Makkelie very spontaneous and passionated while Faghani speaks very professional and considered. CONMEBOL referees are still feeling more confident in Spanish language. By the way, is Busacca getting older or not? He still looks young!

    6. Is Ivanov shown as instructor in one of the pictures posted on the FIFA website? Only Russian teams, referees and observers are suspended by FIFA/UEFA, but not the instructors?

      Delete
    7. Yep. He is well regarded in FIFA despite Blatter's famous criticism. Also Ruiz is there...

It is like Kulbakou/Karasëv to Saudi Arabia during the summer. I leave it for others to determine what the right approach is regarding match officials and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But what is clear that is that UEFA/FIFA took the action they did - not because they believe it to be 'morally right' - but that they are only guided by media reception and threats of other team's withdrawals.

      Delete
    8. That's very clear, Mikael. Nowadays almost everything is done because committees are forced and not because they really believe in what they do.

      Delete
    9. Regardless of motivation, it should be the same for all Russians: either all accepted or all suspended. Referees (Karasev) and instructors (Ivanov) should be treated the same way in official FIFA/UEFA events. Saudi Arabia is a domestic leagie, not a FIFA or UEFA competition.

    2. Why shouldn't Taylor be appointed?

      Delete
    3. first anonymous, partially agree. good to see Gillett and Hooper on tv and Brammall not likely to get his debut for a few weeks as per most seasons with new officials, often just 4th official to start with. Actually at first I though wrong of ur Taylor point however maybe a week without an appointment might have been better for all departments

      Delete
    4. As far as PGMOL is concerned, they probably don't have an issue with the first goal and the Romero hair pull is more on the VAR as Taylor is focusing on the expected dropzone at the near post. I would have been pretty surprised to see him get the weekend off. Plus, he's probably going to have CL match next week so him getting a chance to get the Chelsea game behind him is probably a good thing.

  21. Solid performance by Zwayer, who corrected reject a penalty appeal in first half, supported by VAR. Well done

  22. Predictions for second leg?

    1. I think the two hottest matches will be in Belgrade and Trabzon. In Trabzon, Marciniak or Lahoz will be suitable. I also think Soares Dias would be in Belgrade, because despite VAR in there, I don't think UEFA would take the risk to choose World Cup referee in Belgrade (although actually it should be necessary) after Makkelie incident.

    2. Judging from first game in Copenhagen, Marciniak will be send to handle the 2nd leg. Mateu to Belgrade, Turpin for Benfica game in Portugal (or might fancy him a Dinamo - Bodo game and Taylor to Portugal)

    3. Soares Dias already officiated the team from Belgrade in the 3rd round, hence I doubt he will be appointed. Sure names next week are: Turpin, Taylor, Marciniak and Mateu Lahoz (all WC referees), and a 6th name (probably one referee with a 2nd game).

I think they can take the risk with a WC referee. As long as there is a strong ref and good VAR in place. You are referring to a game without VAR and GLT.

    4. @Anonymous 00:37. Definetly not Mateu in Belgrade after del Cerro Grande was in charge at the first leg. Furthermore, AR1 last night, Pau Cebrian Devis is usually in team Mateu Lahoz.

    5. The game in Belgrade screams Orsato or Makkelie to me, but they already had a game.

Mateu not possible. Turpin would surprise me (I rather him in Lisbon in Eindhoven). Perhaps Taylor or Marciniak?

    6. Marciniak seems like a good choice to me.

    7. Prefer Turpin to handle Benfica game (might still fancy him to ref in Trabzon and Marciniak then to Belgrade though). Taylor depends on how he perform this weekend I think (after what happened on NLD last Sunday). Mateu to Eindhoven 🤔 ?

    9. Hmm Mateu recently officiated AZ - Dundee. Would be a surprise to see him again with a Scottish and Dutch team. I wouldn’t mind though ;)

  24. This time I think that all three games were not so challenging as one could have expected on paper, I think all good officiating, for what I could see.

  25. Since the abolishment of away goals, the first legs are in my opinion more football-focused, less cards, whereas second legs are more intense and players behaviour is worse, do everything to win.

The best example is the CL semi final Real Madrid versus Man. City.
