Good game for Makkelie, Oliver with relatively easy match on paper... Surprising third game for the Senegalese referee as a fourth official....
ReplyDeleteComparing the first couple of games to the more recent ones. It almost seems (and I hope I'm wrong) as if the Referee Committee might have instructed the Referees to be more permissive and way more lenient. The start of the tournament brought a much needed positive change. I hope that it's not trashed by returning to old habits.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see tomorrow, Orsato will be big in terms of showing us if he has different personality and approach than his 1st game.
DeleteIf that's the case, than for sure we can say that Collina and company instructed refs to be way more lenient and tolerant which is total mistake imo.
+1
DeleteIf this is the case, I feel a bit nervous about the Italian tomorrow. He’s a great referee with a lot of big hopes this tournament - but a sly mexico against a desperate argentina seems like a powder keg, like the sort of game that can end a referee’s tournament. How will Orsato do implementing a less familiar approach in such a game?
DeleteMy prediction is actually that, rather than be lenient like the others, we’ll see him “do his own thing” as Lahoz did today.
Kovacs with his 4th appointment as 4th official, always with ultra-top-tier UEFA main refs.
ReplyDeleteChefren, if I remember correclty, asked about reserve assistant referees management at WC in a previous post.
Here's what I noticed about Kovacs' appointments:
2 times with Mihai Artene (his usual AR1) as RAR
2 times with Vasile Marinescu (AR2) as RAR
Just a little point - Vasile Marinescu is his AR1 and Mihai Artene AR2. He did do a couple of games as AR1 when Vasile was injured.
DeleteWhat does this mean for Monday? 3 referees still unused, Taylor, Conger, and Gassama. Obviously Taylor gets Korea vs Ghana. I believe only realistic appointment for Conger is Serbia v Cameroon. That means Gassama gets either Portugal v Uruguay or Brazil v Switzerland. For me, I give Brazil v Switzerland to the experienced Gassama. Portugal v Uruguay goes to a ref who already had a game. Options are in my opinion, Al-Jassim, Mohammed, or Barton, and I think Ivan Barton deserves it most.
ReplyDeleteAnd furthermore, now I can predict appointments for Group A and B for MD3. For me,
DeleteNetherlands vs Qatar - Gomes
Senegal vs Ecuador - Faghani
Iran vs USA - Turpin
England vs Wales - Vincic
My predictions:
DeleteCAM-SRB: Abdulla Hassan/Al Jassim (Villarreal)
BRA-SUI: Gassama/Frappart (Fischer)
KOR-GHA: Taylor/Siebert (Dankert)
POR-URU: Conger/Mukansanga (Evans)
I’m really curious to see who gets Brazil - Switzerland. It needs to be a very trusted name after the tension from last World Cup. But who?
DeleteAnd as a related secondary question, does fifa want to maintain the disciplinary leniency we saw today? That could of course make for a very difficult puzzle on this match.
Prior to yesterday, I thought Elfath was an easy choice here, but that’s obviously a lot more complicated now. It would especially make sense if FIFA wants to maintain leniency; Elfath has the soft skills to be able to handle the problems this game presents without using cards. And maybe Collina feels better about with risking him in this hot match (and calling it the end of Elfath’s World Cup) than another referee who they might want to protect more.
I don’t really see Gassama succeeding in this kind of match; I think the Portugal - Uruguay game is better for him. He has soft skills too, but this match feels like a bit too much for the Gambian for my liking.
Beath or Mohamed, heck no.
One name that remains interesting to me is Al-Jassim. I think a “law enforcer” performance similar to USA-WAL would be perfect for this match, hopefully accompanied by more convincing body language. The problem is, if FIFA wants disciplinary leniency, the Qatari would be completely disarmed and lack any tools for this potentially-difficult match. My personal preference would be to appoint Al-Jassim here and let him use his cards as needed, but I don’t think that’s the direction FIFA will go.
My predictions:
CAM-SRB: Conger
BRA-SUI: Elfath(???)
KOR-GHA: Taylor
POR-URU: Gassama
On BRA-SUI, if Collina was serious in his press conference about appointing the *right referee* for each game regardless of confederation, he would break confederational neutrality for this one. With Elfath probably out, there’s really no great option outside of Europe and South America for this game, especially if it’s true that FIFA want leniency. Opening up this appointment to those two confederations would give Collina lots of much better options. If it doesn’t happen on this match, it’s clear that Collina’s point in the press conference was just a bluff.

DeleteIt doesn't make sense to break neutrality. There are non-European referees more than able to take control of such match.
DeleteI don't think, Gassama will get BRA-SUI or POR-URU, but the solution could be to give him NED-QAT. Would be like 2014 for him, starting on MD3 with a Netherlands game.
DeleteFor BRA-SUI, maybe Barton is an option after his good first match.
And for POR-URU, I would say Faghani or Gomes.
Conger is an experienced referee. I can easily picture him handling big games like Portugal - Uruguay or Brazil - Switzerland.
ReplyDeleteOn paper this is a smaller game than I expected for Ramos’s second, after a good performance MD1. I wonder if they have bigger plans for him.

ReplyDeleteAlso to note, Frappart not appointed as 4th official for last 3 days. Maybe middle coming for her in some meaningless MD3 game?
ReplyDeleteYes, I noticed that as well. KOR-GHA could be an option for her, although Korea had a French referee in their previous game.
DeleteAnd it would mean, that Taylor won't work until Wednesday.
Unless they break confederation neutrality: Then Taylor could get BRA-SUI or POR-URU.
"Meaningless" MD3 games will be quite rare given the results so far. I think, CRC-GER is the only realistic option for that.
Could be NED-QAT, which isn't quite a meaningless dead rubber but which should be a very simple victory for the Netherlands. If it's not, then it becomes a very important game. I hope it goes to someone else. Maybe they are just saving Frappart in case a truly meaningless match shows up.
DeleteMy predictions:
ReplyDeleteCAM-SRB: Conger
BRA-SUI: Gomez
KOR-GHA: Taylor
POR-URU: Faghani
MD3
NED-QAT: Gassama
Obviously Kovacs, Frappart, Ma Ning, Yamashita, N'Diaye, Mukansanga, Said Martinez & Ortega are all support referees. Frappart hasn't been appointed since 24th Nov. (POR-GHA) with Elfath, which indicates she might get a fixture on MD3. Meanwhile, nothing for the others.
