  3. This rule out Kovacs for a 2nd leg match in UEL.....It's a pity

    1. If Taylor is used in UEL this week, it is possible. Otherwise, I'd say Taylor is in UEL final almost 100%

    2. @matei14 who's your predict for UCL,UEL,UECL final?
      Me:
      -Makkelie(UCL)
      -Kovacs/Taylor(UEL)
      -Letexier/Carlos Grande(UECL)

      Delete
    3. Makkelie
      Taylor
      Zwayer
There was a rumour that Zwayer has a UECL this week, if so then Gil Manzano

    4. I don't think Letexier will have a european final, because he is in Argentina for the Under 20 World Cup.

    5. My mistake.. i forget :D

    6. The source of the Zwayer rumour now says, he has been withdrawn from that SF...

  4. Mr Kovacs had memories last season

  5. Confirmed appointment after the rumors.
So no CL final for Marciniak (still possible, but very unlikely, unless repeating what happened with Cakir and Clattenburg by Collina).
Two interesting things: VAR has been confirmed after Napoli - Milan, I would say a match is not enough to rule a teammate out and I can agree, the situation in past with English VARs in other teams was different (repeated mistakes). And then, Kovacs fourth official: clearly he was planned for something big after Milan - Napoli, but due to performance it wasn't possible.

  6. Is Marciniak a name to be considered for UEL final? Normally, it should not be, he had the WC final after all. But what if Taylor will appear in UEL this week? We would have few options remained. One of the UEL semifinals is for Makkelie for sure.

    1. IMO yes.
But probably only in the combination CL final for Taylor and EL final for Marciniak

      Delete
    2. Why would not it work with Makkelie in UCL final an Marciniak in UEL final?

      Delete
    3. I think Marcinak will officiate 2024 UCL final and/or Euro 2024 final

      Delete
    4. Good question :)
I was somehow assuming, that it would be clear, that Taylor would get one of them.
But indeed, Makkelie & Marciniak might be possible as well.

    5. It's all about whether Taylor will have a UEL game this week or not.

  7. My observation:
Mr Kovacs was one of the referees in the running for the UEL final, Rosetti observed him in the QF. Unfortunately they didn't choose the best QF for him, as he was insulted by Italian journalists. There are still two Italian teams in the running for the Europa League, which makes it a not ideal situation for Kovacs. And therefore the focus moved to Taylor, leaving Kovacs still a candidate if Sevilla and Leverkusen make it to the final. One other possibility was to appoint Kovacs to the MCI-RMA return game, but the standings after the 1st leg did not allow that.

On thursday in the Europa League, we can see both Vincic and Makkelie, as a UCL final test, or just one of them, leaving the other as the obvious choice for the final. I hope we won't see a Vincic (CR) with van Boekel (VAR) combination in the UCL final, to keep two FA's happy... That would be rather unfair towards Makkelie imo, also for his future chances.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So good news for Makkelie probably.

Will be interesting, whether he gets an EL SF before.
    Pro:
    - He hasn't had any international match since (a controversial) Dortmund-Chelsea at the beginning of march - so it would be 3 months until the CL final.
    - There are not so many alternatives for the EL SF games (Vincic and ?)

    Contra:
    - It's risky: If Makkelie would fail on Thursday, it's hard to find an alternative (if Man City is in the final)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And Lahoz or Carlos Grande

      Delete
    2. With Makkelie, only real option if Manchester City in final, is Del Cerro Grande. Vincic should be out due to previous performance, but we heard about some rumors... Mateu is not possible, MamangRef, he already officiated CL final.

      Delete
    3. @sir Chefren

I mean the UEL SF beside Vincic

      Delete
    4. Not possible, because of Sevilla.
So at this point, I believe, Jovanovic, Makkelie and Vincic are the only options for the EL SF games.

      Delete
    5. That's why I think we will see either Vincic or Makkelie as a CR on Thursday. The other one is saved for the UCL final.

Side note, Makkelie didn't work on one of the Ajax-PSV games last month. Instead he worked on a semi-final King Cup (Saudi Arabia) and a game in Greece. Some Dutch folks indicated here that this was due to him being a controversial choice. What if this was all planned to keep him away from the spotlight, as it was supposed to be an extremely challenging cup final and a crucial fight for the #2 spot in Eredivisie (CL ticket)?

      Delete
    6. We saw Marciniak removed from a domestic game before this CL appointment in a top clash, indeed, one couldn't exclude that, but in my opinion it shouldn't be done, because both are separated careers... andf it is not fair to keep out a referee from domestic important match only because he has to officiate internationally...

      Delete
    7. @Chefren: agree. On the other hand, Turpin didn't officiate PSG for months before his UCL final last season. So, I do think it is regular to keep a referee away from risky games in his domestic league as well?

      Delete
    8. If Chefren considers Del Cerro Grande for the UCL final, one could also think about the option that UEFA retains both Taylor and Del Cerro Grande - one of them would be available given that only Real Madrid OR Manchester City can advance to it.

      Delete
    9. No i think the competition with two referees only makkelie and Taylor and the nearest will be makkelie

      Delete
    10. @Mohammed rabie hammad: I think there are also strong arguments against Anthony Taylor (this year) even if Real Madrid will advance to the final. The biggest one (for me): He just handled Real Madrid - Al Hilal at the Club World Cup in February. Would be his second final within a few months and even with one team from that competition. I remember that former Austrian referee Helmut Kohl handled the Supercup AC Milan - FC Barcelona in December 1989 followed by the EC (European Cup, now: Champions League) final AC Milan - SL Benfica in May 1990. But such appointments should not be the rule nowadays ...

  9. Pls I would like to get an idea of the performance of Istvan Kovacs in Milan vs Napoli that made him lose trust of the committee. Can someone help. Thanks

    1. Main focus is the disciplinary management in first half, then totally changing approach (and officiating a good second half). This wasn't in my opinion an optimal choice, I think he failed in reading the exact moment in which to start to book players. Also, leaving a player without card after having broken the corner flag is an evident technical mistake, that can be related to lack of knowledge, if not made on purpose by referee (but then, why doing that?).
Still, one can't say this was a very poor performance, but far from a certain expected level and the "plus" in negative for him was that he was hugely discussed because it was a game between two Italian teams...

      Delete
    2. Hey Chefren, you mentioned, "leaving a player without a card after having broken the corner flag is an evident technical mistake, that can be related to lack of knowledge, if not made on purpose by referee"
I saw a similar incident in a game I was watching so I was wondering if you could point out to me where in the Law Book it says that the player must be carded?
      Thanks.

    3. Not specifically reported in the LotG indeed, but a clear guideline in Italy. Maybe in Romania it is different, but still...

      Delete
    4. Thank you Chefren. Indeed I went to make some research and you points matched what I had read. His management of discipline was a big problem. Being too lenient and then suddenly card happy. And his yellow cardings seemed to favour Milan more. Some really thought the 2 yellow cards to Anguissa were harsh. Some obviously Napoli supporting journalists followed him to the dressing room shouting 'shame'. Milan also felt they should have been given a penalty. But I remember the performance was not deemed controversial in this blog after the game. Now I have been seeing that Kovacs cannot be selected for games due to his performances in that game

      Delete
    5. @Chefren - if it's not in the LOTG (which it isn't) it is NOT an evident technical mistake regardless of what any countries individual guidelines say. Their guidelines are for their domestic games and are irrelevant outside of that league. In an international appointment it is the LOTG & any UEFA guidelines that have to be followed and it is not a UEFA guideline so again therefore not an evident technical mistake.

  14. Interesting situation from serie A game Monza - Napoli.
    https://streamable.com/qurgcc
The referee whistled a foul against attacker, replay showed that he didn't do anything, but he was hit by defender.
VAR checked but without intervention, supported referee.
Do you think this was a clear and obvious mistake?
It is an extremely particular situation.
While you can say that VAR maybe didn't intervene because attacker put deliberately the leg there to get a contact, what about what happened before? The foul by attacker can't find explanations, to this would be a clear and obvious mistake from the beginning.
But the question is (rather unsolved): in such situations, VAR must judge only the possible penalty itself, or a certain decision by referee before (if clearly wrong like this one), can contribute to mark a clear and obvious mistake?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Clear and obvious mistake for me. VAR should've intervened

      Delete
    2. IMO not clear, because one could assess it as tripping by the attacker, who moves his right leg intentionally into the path of the opponent and not towards the ball.
And regarding your last question: I would say for "clear and obvious" only the no penalty call itself should matter. However the complete situation can give a hint, whether the referee had the correct perception of the situation and this could be considered in the VAR evaluation.

  20. Surprised by Rosetti that he sends Makkelie to Seville as this game can ruin his chance for final.

Marciniak can not get final after he had Semi final and Taylor will be out if City is there. We can have big surprise for final if City and Inter are there.

    1. It could be double edged sword for Makkelie. If he show excellent performance, he will 99% fly to Istanbul (regardless of who will go to the final round, MCI or RMA), but if he failed and MCI go to the final round DCG or Vincic will surpassed him, if his performance is average I think he will h2h with Taylor and political aspect (either their FA or “seniority”) will decide who fly to Istanbul.

      2025 Taylor/Marciniak/Vincic
      2026 Vincic/Kovacs/Oliver/Manzano/Peljto/Etc.

At least 2026 some new names will be added, for names like Manzano, Massa, IMO they are like Turpin, need more political support or certain condition.

    1. Should probably be pointed out that Coote still is on the FIFA VAR list, just not the main one. I wouldn't call Tierney's appointment completely undeserved, he's been quite good this season until his nightmare in LIVTOT a few weeks back (where Coote obviously was involved as well). If it was purely based on performances this season though, it should've went to Simon Hooper

  25. I swear, sometimes I can’t understand how the Romanian media know such deep details inside from Central Commission of Referees. The context is the following: Sunday, 21 May is a game that is 99% title decider. Obviously, the logical thing to do is to appoint your best referees Kovacs and Hategan. But things are not that simple. Gazeta Sporturilor, abbreviated GSP is by far the biggest and the most important newspaper and released some interesting information from inside. They have some great sources, other times they found the referee chosen for a derby days before the official announcement.

Monday, 15 May: GSP release an article presenting the possible referees pairings for that game and announce a shock: Apparently, the relation between O. Hategan and I. Kovacs is very cold, they don’t really talk to each other and wouldn’t accept to work together. Normally, I would consider it a lie and an artificially created controversy by the media. But surely there is some truth. There have been 38 games so far in Liga 1, and Hategan has never been VAR in a game officiated by Kovacs. This can’t be a coincidence. Practically, they worked together only in a few games in Saudi Arabia.

Tuesday, 16 May: Another article release by GSP. This time is announced that Vassaras held an emergency online meeting with the two (I don’t know if at the same time) trying to convince them to work together on Sunday. In Romania, the match officials are released for the public only 24 hours before the game. Meanwhile, many people involved in football requested a conciliation for the good of football.

Wednesday, 17 May: GSP announced that the negotiations failed. And now Vassaras have to choose between Hategan as VAR or Kovacs as referee. His choice? He prefers to have Hategan as VAR. And now have to decide the referee for this game. Almost for sure it will be Radu Petrescu. He was tested in some difficult games recent times; he did ok, not bad but also not too good performances. Monday, GSP held online pool, giving the people to choose from 4 possible options referee-VAR. From almost 100.000 votes, 86% of people chosen Hategan to be VAR. Also GSP reminded 10 mistakes corrected as VAR this season. As I told before, he has a great reputation among fans, footballers, club presidents and media.

The best solution would be Coltescu-Hategan. Coltescu is the best referee in terms of performances in the last two seasons. But he is probably ruled out because he officiated the last game of one of the implied teams. Where he had an excellent performance by the way, almost no mistake. I think the football people would be more than ok with an exception, but it’s rather unlikely to happen. The Coltescu-Hategan option was the most voted in the pool. I am curious how will things develop. But if the beef is real, my prediction that from the next season, if he doesn’t come back on the pitch, Hategan will be promoted from AVAR into VAR in UCL games in Kovacs team might not happen. The pressure on the referee on Sunday will be huge nevertheless. Generally, I prefer not to bother you with internal scandals, but I feel like this is something that might interest more people.

    1. You should read Prosport article about Hațegan. Is it strange because in Gsp was not talking bad about him. But he had a bad game as VAR in Rapid-CFR in regular season, where he give 2 wrong penaltyes for the home team, and CR was Cătălin Popa. And by the way, the journalist who wrote about Hațegan behaviour worked at FRF. There is no smoke without fire.

    3. Would love to see Kovacs, best romanian ref currently.

With match this magnitude, all needs to be at the top level, and Kovacs is certainly capable of whistling matches like that.

FCSB lobby will for sure put pressure before and during the game, they are the biggest club in history of Romania and since 3015 and new playoff format they dont have a title.

This time they are not facing CFR Cluj so very risky game for whoever's in charge.

I would like to see Kovacs, but would not be surprised if I saw Coltescu or Petrescu.

I just read the article in Prosport that you suggested. Very interesting. I would have never guessed this version of Hategan. But I don't know how to comment these disclosures. It would be very dissapointing if it is true... Hațegan himself was contacted and rejected the accusations, saying that these are lies and is dissapointed and disgusted to read them.

To the users: Do you want a summary of the article?

After GSP’s article about the cold relationship between Kovacs and Hategan, Prosport – nr.2 sport media made searches to understand what caused the distance between the two. And they found more than they expected: another, unknown version of Hategan. An article was released today. Their sources are more referees, both in activity and retired. Many referees suspect that Hategan has a plan to became the Head of Referees in Romania. Also, some suspect that Hategan got prasing articles in media in exchange for appointments information and others information from inside.

I remember the article after that Saudi Arabia game. I was also disspointed about how media reported that game in Saudi Arabia. But I assumed it was only a bad piece of jurnalism, not an ordered article. The VAR intervention was indeed correct.

      VERY IMPORTANT !!!
ProSport contacted the referee Ovidiu Hațegan to comment and his reaction was: "There are some lies! I am disgusted of commenting this, I am disappointed to hear such a thing from such colleagues".

I dont’t know what to think. Some might be true and some might be false, all might be true or all mighht be false. But what is a fact is that Hategan is really a great VAR. He had a lot of great interventions this season.

    7. With all the respect, the main reason why "Romanian public" don't like Istvan Kovacs is his nationality.

      Delete
    8. What does it say about a possible provocation? Google Translate may not be 100% correct.

      Delete
    9. @DrMr You are right it is because he is ethnic Hungarian. He has been xenophobically abused many times because of it (2 games this season have had to be stopped due to it). A high number of the public were against him for this reason alone, until Hațegan's heart attack. Then all of a sudden he stopped being a b*z**r and became Romanian... Relations between Hungarians and Romanians are fragile at best and there are too many of both nationalities who wish to just carry on the hate. Personally I have family who are Székely and others who are ethnic Hungarian Romanians, I also have a lot of Romanian friends. For me and many others, both Hungarian & Romanian, it is time to move on, stop the hate and start forging friendships but we're still fighting against the xenophobia that still exists and in that respect neither nationality are any better than the other!

      Delete
    10. @DrMr You are right, but we should not generalize. Some people indeed hate Kovacs just because of his name. Unfortunately, the ultranationalist current has grown quite a lot in the recent years, mainly because of the political situation. It’s … complicated.

@bmb I also hope for that! I am not from Transylvania but the xenophobia disgust me. Unfortunately we had some problems this season in this regard. This is what lack of education leads to. I disagree when you say that he became Romania after Hategan’ heart attack. For example, I always considered him a Romanian referee. There will be forever people who won’t accept him and also always have been people that accepted him from the beginning.

@Anonymous 23:27 In that short story, a former referee tells a story about a time Kovacs and Hategan were in the same crew for a European game. Hategan supposedely told another member of the crew whom he was friend to (AR or at the time when there were additional referees at goals) to make fun of Kovacs (because he was supposedely saw as an enemy), make jokes about him, to bother him in general; hoping that Kovacs would lose his cool and I don’t know respond, maybe with violence, and that to affect him. But from the whole article, this is what it seems to be the less believable.

Today was announced that Kovacs is VAR tomorrow at an important playout game and Coltescu on the grass. So GSP was right, Hategan will be VAR Sunday with almost for sure Petrescu CR.

    11. @matei14 - I didn't mean from people like you who have always been accepting, I meant the wider public who have not always been so - very generalised I know but there was less hate & more acceptance. Sadly I also agree there will forever people who don't accept. It seems to be in the main just 2 clubs supporters still wanting to fight the fight! Harmony is not something I will see in my lifetime especially all the time both of our politicians can't resist a dig or nasty comment here and there! People like you and I have to just keep building bridges little by little and building respect & friendship where we can.

  26. Yes it is interesting indeed.

  27. It is reported by an Italian journalist who was close to the incident on the field that Haaland insulted Marciniak (he didn't want to repeat which word was used, impossible to say in TV), Marciniak answered: "Say it again and I will send you off".

    2. Easy first half for Marciniak. He didn't have too many decisions to take. I liked how he expressed his authority, obviously the players respect him. The second half should be more challenging but it also can be equally easy.

  31. No problems for Marciniak in this game, Real Madrid was never in real contention for qualification.
Now Taylor is out from CL final, he should be quite sure name for EL final. If not, but hard to believe, then Marciniak, after WC final, EL final. Surely the Polish would deserve it, and to be honest I also thought if committee a few months ago felt obliged to assign him to CL final as logical consequence of WC treatment. But this, very likely, will not happen for now. Tomorrow important games for both Makkelie and Vincic: we will see how they will perform.

  34. Excellent performance by Marciniak tonight, IMO. Of course, no problems in a rather easy game (if one can say so for a game on this level), however I cannot recall any significant mistake from him, nothing stands out. What does stand out, however, is some excellent prevention moments and a pretty clear display of natural authority at the beginning of the 1H, garnering respect from the players for the rest of the match (especially the situation with Haaland, mentioned by Chefren above). His foul selection was optimal for this game IMO, leading to a pleasant game to watch; disciplinary approach was excellent for my taste, I cannot remember any missed cards or even a warning, and all the given YCs were correct for me. All in all, it was a pleasure to watch this performance tonight.

    1. I think he should have given two more YC at the end of the fist half. Also his positioning was not top-notch (but probably never was) as he cut off some passing lanes instead of staying ahead of the ball. But this is critic on a high level and he did very well this match. :)

  36. The decision not to give Man City a penalty when Bernado Silva kicked the Madrid defender, summed up how brilliant Marciniak is. 90% of referees give a penalty for that.

  37. I hope Syzmon Marcinak will officiate UCL final since Lautaro or Alvarez will get doubles UCL and World Cup in the same season, and Marcinak will become 2nd referee which officiate World Cup and UCL final in the same season, since Clattenburg also officiate UCL semifinal and final in same season in 2016
