  2. For anyone who wonders why VAR is so bad in England, I suggest reading the following article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66612570

For context Dean was a PL referee until the end of the 21/22 season. He became a dedicated VAR for the 22/23 season but didn’t receive any appointments from February onwards. He now works for Sky Sports the main broadcaster of the PL.

  4. Here the two penalties whistled by Treimanis in Hearts - PAOK.
I will watch more carefully his performance later on.

    First penalty, after OFR:
    https://streamable.com/sa2uz6
I think I will be very unpopular here: where is clear and obvious mistake? Please mention to me the key element that makes this challenge worthy of an OFR, even more with referee having full visual control and not convinced once called to monitor.

Second penalty, absolutely clear, no doubts:
    https://streamable.com/ys0lkf
But maybe previous foul for PAOK missed before, outside the box, Greek player injured. It was a benefit for Greek team that Treimains whistled only later after that...

    1. second penalty: the defender does not hit the ball because the attacker takes it away a moment before. clear penalty

      Delete
    2. For me with the 1st penalty, it is clear there is contact on the heal of the attacker. This contact has definitely tripped the attacking player. The attacker is also running at pace at this point so contact needed is minimal.
For me that makes it a clear error, if we use the mantra of 'clear and obvious' to try and said that's not a penalty then you could argue with just about any non-factual decision.
I also think the delay at the screen was more about being convince it was in the penalty area than the foul itself.

      Delete
    3. The contact on the heal can be indeed the argument for clear and obvious mistake, but then, should this be valid for all similar touches? This was just my point for discussion :) I agree that this one should have been whistled live.

      Delete
    4. Chefren, the difference between this contact for the first penalty and other touches that doesn’t necessarily result in a penalty is that this contact has a material impact on the attacking player going to ground because he is on full speed, and this can categorically fall under missed incident (the contact) because the referee didn’t see the contact in the heel but rather perceived a body to body challenge. It’s definitely OFR worthy in my opinion.

      Delete
    5. Chefren in a minority of one. It’s a clear penalty missed by the referee for which VAR must intervene. Referees are told that in that area of the penalty area there is a greater risk of them missing an incident and they must work hard to get into the correct position to make the call. Not leave it to the AR

      Delete
  5. An additional thing, there is no VAR communication in stadium during these qualifiers. It would be good to have at least the screen information you get during the group stages

  6. Further clips from Treimanis:

16' Possible YC for reckless after a tackle originally oriented on the ball, but very strong arguments for whistling this as foul:
    https://streamable.com/rs3p4y

21' Management - Is a warning OK after the action by player?
    https://streamable.com/3yfnbg

34' Acceptance - there were other similar situations, but just an example of players reaction after whistled fouls
    https://streamable.com/5kby2g

51' Possible RC for violent conduct by elbow, assessed as reckless. VAR supported, then players out of control, management
    https://streamable.com/a97de3

69' Penalty appeal for handball, there was also another similar situation, all correct decisions to play on
    https://streamable.com/t4wji0

83' Exaggerated reaction by PAOK player to deceive referee, then reaction by opponent and another confrontation happens, management. Two yellow cards are issued. Maybe more presence and alertness by referee after whistling foul should have followed.
    https://streamable.com/8b3mn7

    90'+5 YC time wasting
    https://streamable.com/3g524x

This was Treimanis style in this game, I think not suitable because clearly players felt allowed to do what they wanted with a certain lack of authority, in my opinion too evident. The Latvian should have used a strict approach, given the hot game and he should have whistled more fouls, trying always to prevent and anticipate what could have happened later. In some way, I would say too "easy" officiating for such a game, it should have been definitely more careful.

About assistant referees, offside goal disallowed by VAR, mistake by AR1 (cameras on the other side than the standard broadcasting):
    https://streamable.com/6ne6dn
    https://streamable.com/98wesx
And this should have been avoided as well.
Not the best performance for the crew, he had been appointed for this game exactly because this was more than the other ties of the round in the competition, but I don't think Treimanis gave a positive answer to committe with this performance...

    1. You’re so naive.. by de jure Hungary is NATO, we can talk more but this is refereeing blog. If I use your naive and then BLR officials must be banned and Kruashvili can’t officiate Sabah 2 weeks ago. Come on, you can’t read the news only from BBC and CNN as simply like that.

      Delete
    2. Why Kruashvili can't officiate Sabah? I don't see any problem here. But for ex Armenian officials will never referee Azeri teams for obvious reasons. And btw I agree with you about not turning it into political dicussion. I just mentioned what would be reaction in Ukraine and it was easily avoidable

  8. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/38255317/former-ref-dean-avoided-var-call-save-official-more-grief

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Referees hate having to go to the monitor for an OFR. That look of anguish, concern, and disgust on most referees' faces is very telling of how they feel about VAR interventions. VAR's who are current or former referees understand this feeling and will do whatever to find anything to attempt to support the call made by their fellow referees on the pitch. It's too bad that feelings interfere with referees' ability to properly utilize the VAR system. Unfortunately, the secrecy veil that cloaks refereeing prohibits referees from being open and honest like Mike Dean was in this instance.

    1. Very strange pairing.
One could guess that VAR and AVAR from Italy travelled with Orsato to Greece (CL game today) but there are two days in the middle. I think Spain wouldn't have had troubles in sending VARs with the rest of the team, so I really don't understand.

    2. And funny, but nobody notice, about roumanian VAR for hungarians team, in Kosice. It's the first time, that we sent a VAR team for a non romanian referee team. For me, both Popa and Chivulete are the best VAR in Romania.

  10. There was a lot talk about Patrick Ittrich showing yellow card in 5th minute for kicking ball away and then second yellow card to same player for on stamp on foot . Game Darmstadt-Union Berlin.
Same situation as we had in Newcastle-Liverpool but Brooks did not showed second yellow card.

Patrick opened talk about this situation on his twitter profile and it is very clear with this new directives referee in England and Germany will protect the game no mather what minute of the game we are in. He has got only positive response for his actions in this game as we know most refs would not act in this way. We saw Brooks action for example, even if Brooks first yellow might be wrong we have said it many times two wrongs does not make one right.

Euro Soccer Ref wrote in other topic here that this new directives that we can see in England and Germany we could not see in UEFA so far. But from that I have read and hear in interviews German and English refs will act same way in Europe as in domestic.
Not many English refs in action this week in Europe but will be interesting to follow Germans as we have team Osmers(Shroder 4th ref), team Siebert(Badstubner 4th ref), team Stieler(4th ref Petersen), team Schlager(4th ref Ittrich). Mostly interesting to see if they will punish unsportsmanlike behavior like they do now in Bundesliga like kicking ball away, protesting, showing bad gestures against refs, time wasting etc.
One of thing that annoys fans so far is that some of refs are not consistent enough with this new rules.

    4. VAR must provide the evidence, if this is the only footage used to assess the ball out, intervention is an evident mistake. One can't be sure ball is totally out.

  15. Another hot half between PAOK and Hearts. 3 yellow cards, 2 absolutely correct, Shanklands more debatable.

Some iffy decisions but on the whole Fernández is managing the game better than Treimanis.

However for.me, the opening goal should be disallowed. Interfering with the defender, and maybe keepers line of vision

    1. Correction 4 yellows. The 1st was definitely correct and some would even make an argument for VC with greater contact

    2. Just seen a replay of the 1st goal. Definitely not in the line of vision of the goalkeeper, however there is physical contact with the Hearts player. For me that was sufficient to disallow

      Delete
  16. The only reason the paok attacker is there is to disrupt the line of vision of the keeper for a cross. He then leaves it and the player behind misses. It simply has to be offside

13 YCs were given by Verboomen and Reinshreiber last year.

  19. Legia Warszawa vs FC Midtjylland was quite easy game to handle for Simone Sozza. Very fair behaviour of both teams, small number of fouls, etc.

    KMI
Three penalty area incidents: 1) no handball at all, 2) rather no (punishable) handball - scandalous no replay by Polish broadcaster, 3) no foul, correct play-on, maybe even a simulation. In addition, correct YC for SPA in 48' (Legia players wanted a RC for DOGSO but no way).

The Italian has a VERY strong personality. He wants to stay in the background and allows much physical play and he doesn't like to be disturbed by players. One can say he often is on the verge of being arrogant or totally isolated but, although he is really serious and distant to players, my feeling is that his goal is to make game intense and avoid being the centre of attention. Surely he is one to watch and has potential to go far in UEFA hierarchy. I would instruct him to not carry his reluctance to award FKs too far (today there were some moments when it was simply too much) because in hotter games it may easily backfire.

I have to mention some excellent onsides by AR1 Marco Bresmes!

  20. Fiorentina penalty, from 2:08 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP2Nl8kXaCk&ab_channel=ACFFiorentina Sorry but I don't understand how you can give such penalty with VAR, thats scandalous. And as I said its not the first time Simovic gives penalties out of nothing, see Kazahstan vs Denmark match. Hope we 'll never see him again in UEFA competitions.

    1. It was punishable handball, his hand make his body bigger even though it was not shoot on target, that’s why defender must keep their hand on the back when they defending, as simple as that. I didn’t watch his game, but based on your comment it’s very harsh to “banned” him for at least supportable handball. I think you have personal issue with him, even for the Danish didn’t complain about his performance in Astana.

      Delete
    2. Supportable penalty IMO. Defender was very unlucky with protruding his elbow for a very brief moment. However I disagree with another statement. Keeping hands behind back is completely unnatural. Nothing that defenders "simply must do".

      Delete
    3. IMO, handball and penalty

      Delete
    4. Made his body bigger? I don't see it in this video, on the opposite hands are very close to his body. And anyway the ball hit his shoulder.

      Delete
    5. play the video in 0,25 and also look at Simovic, he had clear view of the incident, so IMO it’s correct for VAR to keep silent and support on field decision.

  21. Some situations from Bodo Glimt - Sepsi OSK (ref. Harvey - IRL):

    https://youtu.be/NlRiyJatH7g?si=eYEzcok7a6w0pHPi

Min 3:22 - goal for 2-0 scored from what it seems to be an offside position. Please check the scorer's head, seems to be clearly behind the last defender.

Min 9:02 - disallowed goal for Sepsi OSK for what it seems to be a non-existent offside.

To mention that VAR did not provide the traditional replays with the drawn offside line.

Also a very, extremely poor performance from the Irish ref, no clear foul line, he was penalising all contacts in favour of Bodo while being very lenient towards them. One of the most scandalous perfomances I have seen this year.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You do realise that VAR is in these games? So all offsides will be correct as none were line of vision which is open to interpretation. Maybe if your team didn't cause so many problems for the match officials then they wouldn't have had so many disciplinary sanctions.

      Delete
  22. 3:22 - the rightmost red player keeps the goal scorer onside
    https://snipboard.io/R2ph6Z.jpg

9:02 - it looks like no offside but if you look closely the goal scorer's shoulder could be milimetres offside

Given the fact the VAR was operating in this game, we shouldn't question such calls.

  23. About Fiorentina - Rapid Wien penalty decision, in my opinion supportable.
It is a call that will not find all people agree, but VAR was right in backing the decision.
Reasons: the player before the coming of the ball has both arms in a not punishable position, close to body (picture nr. 1), but then when ball comes, the player makes a movement with right arm and he intercepts the ball (picture nr. 2). Still, not a 100% open arm, but he could have easily avoided the movement. In my opinion referee, very close to the incident, punished then this attitude by defender. Not a clear an obvious mistake if this was assessed as deliberate (but instinctive) choice to stop ball in a way...
In case of no penalty, would VAR have intervened?
My answer is rather "no", but I'm not sure.

    1. I forgot to add, the fact that ball hits arm close to shoulder (but I think you can't be 100% sure it was shoulder and not arm), makes this perceived as less punishable, but the key of the read by referee should be in the player movement, he opened, even if not so much, the arm, if compared to the previous moment.

    2. I agree that was supportable decision, clearly referee had clear view to read the situation and decide the incident. But I can’t imagine if this is happened to Fiorentina, surely I bet the referee immediately end his season or get embarrassing match :)

  24. Clear penalty. Deliberately movement to the ball, and contact with HAND. I think it easily can be seen on slow mation video.
