  1. OT: Bayern's 1:3 goal against Augsburg on Saturday was an interesting case regarding the new "deliberate play" definition and I would be interested in hearing your opinions.
Decision was onside, goal after OFR.
Referee: Christian Dingert, VAR: Sascha Stegemann

Mali vs. Burkina Faso: Mutaz (lby)
Morocco vs. South Africa: Ismail (sud)

  3. Good performance by Mohamed Adel in Cape Verde-Mauritania. Quite generous line for duels, mandatory early SPA-booking and correct late PK awarded for tripping. Always preventative before set pieces, although quite inactive towards DtR after the goal, nothing too concerning though IMO. Solid officiating.

    1. +1! You hit the nail - "solid officiating". He was a very smart choice by CAF for this game imo. Adel is 45yrs old, so most likely this will be the highlight of his international career, and he can reflect on two, exactly, solid performances in this AFCON. I'll do a couple of clips probably at halftime of Atcho's game :).

    3. Agreed, it was an uncomplicated game and the referee did not make it any harder than it needed to be, solid work. The cherry on top is the PK at the end, good alertness to be ready for the surprise defensive mistake and to adjust his position to see the foul by the goalkeeper.

  4. The caution for Mané (9’) is an example of an SFP tackle, to be honest.

    1. Very surprising non-intervention here TBH. Mané not 'fully' hitting his opponents with his studs should not be an argument, this is a glaring example of a foul endangering the opponent's safety, in my view.

  5. Clear Red card. And must be an VAR intervention. Terrible challenge

    1. Very clear RC. First evident mistake by VAR at this tournament, it should have happened, TBH, sooner or later... impossible to support YC here.

    2. Var crew should go home after this game

    3. Agreed, straight to the airport from the stadium. Unbelievable.

  7. Another big decision for the officials and I think they got this one right - no offence committed at 55’, Senegal wanted a penalty.

  8. Poor miss by Atcho, completely mandatory intervention by the Egyptian VAR, stonewall penalty. Four cautions issued in the sequence by the Gabonese ref - dissent at the initial play on call by Ivory Coast, then to Senegal manager and coach as he went to the OFR, and finally to the goalkeeper for the foul.

  9. Three big incidents from Senegal vs. Ivory Coast described above:

    https://www.streambug.io/cv/8e468d
    https://www.streambug.io/cv/67311e
    https://www.streambug.io/cv/4c4e16

YC at 9' could be 'forgiven' from the assessing perspective, but the 81' blackout should see Atcho rejected by CAF. The overall impression was mostly adequate by the ref from Gabon but areas for development -- not just relying on a natural (physical) authority to allow a carte blanche for dissenting gestures; assessing some duels including recognising potential uses of the advantage clause -- were also present.

Disciplinary control though, again at this tournament, was generally quite good.

The merits of Pierre Ghislain Atcho are evident but given that at least according to appointments in this AFCON, one can even read him as a 'CAF no.1', he was slightly underwhelming for me between both this game and also Egypt vs. Ghana, especially in technical aspects.

    2. Correct decisions for me about the penalty area incidents, 55' is a play on and the other one a clear penalty. Technically, not the best from the Gabonese but in this case VAR failed in one incident as well. You can see, penalties assessment were OK from the room, the problem about red cards and VAR very often is that the matter is always too, too subjective... but all must see that RC, definitely! Also, as I very often underline, too long time at the monitor for the OFR! Clear foul, what should you see?

      Delete
    3. Perfect description of the game Mikael. One can see why Atcho might have impressed in other games: if you take away the critical mistakes, he gave a mostly positive impression. Unfortunately his tournament should be over after today.

  10. Anyone watch Faghani 2YC in IRQ-JOR? What do you think?

    2. AFC Refcom again and again (hopefully not making worst) with their decision to appoint young Malaysian Nazmi Nasaruddin (after only get his debut in death rubber game in Iraq-Vietnam) in KO stage involving another his neighbor country Thailand-Uzbekistan. Well I can't denied again CAF have much better management than AFC, well done Doue.

    3. Faghani totally correct, second celebration. He had a perfect game, but appointing Iranian for an Iraq game is poor from AFC. As for Nasaruddin this was not an issue as he also did very well.

    4. I hope Australian FA will support Faghani to get a game again to proving that his decision didn't assessed as wrong. Simply AFC refcom need to stepdown after I read in some media reported about death threats againts Faghani.

Hoping more experts on this blog will comment for this situation.

    6. Well, I couldn't find a video of full celebration, can you give more detailes about yellow card? Too long celebration?
BTW before the Jordan goal this was a very evident penalty, the gesture by Faghani seems play on, not sure an advantage (wouldn't have been so lazy in case), so I think that the goal "helped" him, otherwise 100% OFR.
We could discuss about the opportunity of a referee from Iran handling Iraq, but it would be very long and complex I would say. I would have made another choice not for other reasons, but just for protecting referee. So even in case of correct decisions, you have this outcome!

this is full sequence from broadcaster, for the full match in some region you can watch in AFC Asian Cup youtube channel. Based on the video I think it was for his celebration (2nd celebration I think), either too long or provocative as the commentator said.

    8. Thanks, my sincere opinion is that the YC can be absolutely justified by book, I don't think because provoking celebration, but rather too long and indeed excessive. Nevertheless, most of referees here wouldn't have booked. Also, said without anything against Faghani, a bit arrogant whil issuing this second YC, he didn't appear calm. To be honest I would have avoided to see an Iranian referee with Iraq in all cases.
The decision can be justified, but the context makes the full mismanagement by AFC.

this is 1yc for Aymen. Thanks for the opinion chefren.

I think if this is totally mismanagement by the AFC, they should responsible for this issue and I think the only way to clear this situation is to give another match for Faghani.

      Delete
    10. Indeed at this point not appointing Faghani again would mean admitting the mismanagement, difficult situation to handle, we will see what is planned for the Iranian.

  11. Anyone can remembering us about similar arrangement as Malaysian referee in Euro or another highest tournament? Debut, death rubber game, get KO stage, but all involving "same region". Is it the right things to do?

  15. Watched both YL matches today. Not convincing from Bandic in Midtjyland. Lack of leadership. A mess in situation with red card. Dont know what happened there. They seemed bewildered

Danish Mikkel Redder did very good in Mainz. No problems for him. That match was great advertisment for YL. Sold out stadium!!

    2. Here some incidents from Bandić game.

Overall, a very good use of advantage by referee, visible in two of the following clips.

18' YC for reckless after advantage (first card for the player who then will be sent off), maybe a bit of confusion but still understandable and rather good decision:
      https://streambug.org/cv/633d39

32' YC for SPA, reported by AR
      https://streambug.org/cv/137a1e

      59' YC for reckless challenge
      https://streambug.org/cv/9f2258

62' Most crucial incident of the game. Second YC to a player and YC to another for mutual misconducts in occasion of a throw-in. If one can say that at the end final decisions, due to players behaviors are OK, well, the management is the wordt possible and both cards should (must...) have been easily avoided. To blame fourth official maybe for some aspects even more than referee. He didn't react properly and he allowed the things to happen. Also, when referee came on the scene, he didn't look absolutely sure of what to do and he got all informations by the fourth. I think the cards can sound as harsh, having a warning there but first of that, physical prevention, would have been perfect. These situations can happen more when you have a refere and a fourth official who don't know at all each other coming from different refereeing cultures, indeed it's dfifficult to keep some harmony, let's say, inside the team. Maybe the referee from Bosnia wouldn't have even shown the cards if he had managed the scene directly by himself. Definitely poor appearance.
      https://streambug.org/cv/16a819

90'+3 YC another good use of advantage, reckless challenge punished after by YC
