  1. No appointment back to De Almeida, after Lupp joined Swiss team in previous game. That'a absolutely unfair against the Swiss assistant referee.

    1. It‘s definitely not optimal, but it would have been also unfair to Zwayer if he could not have his usual team because their has to be a compensation for De Almeida…

    2. Perhaps this injustice would be an opportunity to appoint Schärer (with De Almeida) for this year's Supercup. However, it is incomprehensible that UEFA does not keep appropriate records to prevent such mishaps in advance. According to press reports, De Almeida had already been nominated for the Portugal game with Schärer before UEFA made a short-term reshuffle. I would actually have expected that Kovacs would be automatically "blocked" for Hungary, Zwayer for England (Bellingham), etc. and that checklists exist for such sensitive topics.

  2. Could this also suggest the following VAR's are not required moving forward as they haven't had an appointment in the KO stage:
    Hernandez (reported previously)
    San
    Kajtazovič
    Ullosoy
    Popa

Also potentially the following observers not being used:
    Webb
    Mikluski
    Borbolan
    Rizzoli
    Vassaras

    1. Looks logical, that those VARs are done, otherwise they could have been used as AVAR somewhere.
Whether that means no further games for Schärer, Tello and Vincic or just different VARs remains to be seen.
Especially for Kajtazovic this would be surprising though, as he didn't do anything wrong and was recently trusted with the CL final. So I even considered him for a QF without Vincic.

    2. Yeah, think it could be very interesting to see whether Vincic uses Italian VAR's now or isn't used at all (which would be surprising for me).

Observers are interesting too - could potentially mean that and English, Italian, Polish (even Romanian) saved for later stages!!

  3. So as usual and most of people's prediction (Round 16 overall appointment) is correct.
    So for QF :
Taylor: Experienced one, two good games in 2024, so many finals except CL.
Turpin: Really poor opening recovered perfectly in 2nd to be in QF.
Makkelie: Last time SF, most of time with critical and crucial matches. Not excellent but good enough to be a QF candidate.
Vincic: Not better than previous three but political background is too strong! Should get a good fight from Kovacs who already make the situation worse!
    SF:
    Marciniak.
    Zwayer.
In this year if you consider about performance in Europe then there are Latexier, Kovacs, Zwayer and Neyberg. Two out for Olympic, one with a poor performance. So, Zwayer is the best option than those QF referees with better performance. But thing:
    1. Germany's absence.
    2. Excellent R16 performance.

    1. I find it interesting that Taylor was nominated for numerous finals. At the last World Cup and the last European Championship, however, Oliver was more successful with a quarter-final in each of both tournaments. For my taste, too, there is a certain disparity between the two Englishmen in the nominations for finals.

    2. as confirmed already Makkelie is HOME!!!

  5. If germany reaches the final, who would be the choice, cause I'd say Orsato, Turpin, Marciniak, Makkelie and obv Zwayer would be no options. Letexier/Nyberg at Olympics and Dortmund was unhappy with Vincic in Cl final (the situation is not as bad as with Bayern/Marciniak tho). Taylor?

    1. I don't think, Turpin would be problematic at all. Or why do you think that?
And even Orsato would be accepted, I think, as his performance against Switzerland didn't have negative consequences.

    2. I can see Turpin being accepted. While he gave a bad perfomance in the opening game, germany wasn't angry at him, so there shouldn't be any bad blood. Also there was lots of love for him in german media after Cl semi final Bayern/Real.
Orsato on the other hand would go in the match with a big baggage. German players, coaches and fans felt disadvantaged by him and people would talk about him a lot even before the match starts.

    3. 100 % no issues with Turpin whistling another match of Germany. His performance was not even considered weak, rather the opposite, no talk at all about the referee.

    4. That's why Turpin was kept, no problems with Germany indeed, nobody cared about mistakes because VAR solved correctly and it was one-sided match... BUT.... if Rosetti sends referees home and then he appoints for the final a referee with that poor performance, we should really close the blog.

    5. Not even in a theory that we gonna see Turpin in the final. There are at least three referees in front of him. Chefren, does Kovacs stayed at tournament?

    6. It seems he returned home.

    7. Who is in front of Turpin, if germany reaches the final?

      Delete
    8. Well, at least three candidates:
      Orsato
      Vincic
      Marciniak
      Tello

    9. Yeah I see, probably you are right. I guess my point is that there are arguments against each referee that seems like a contender, if germany reaches the final, cause of recent matches. So maybe it goes back to Orsato, who seems to be the favourite contender in general, even tho he had the most recent match involving Germany, that caused a lot of discussion.

  6. In my oppinion, AUS-TUR is the most difficult match of the 1/8. Hoppe A.Dias will do a great job!

    1. I agree .

On one hand, you have Austria tha plays very dynamicbut has tendencies to do plenty of SPA's and to make dangerous plays.
On the other hand, you have Turkey that is alwqys temperamental and passionate so their evwry match is pretty difficult to handle.

And then we have Dias, ref who showed in Conference League Finals that he doesn't have same criterium for whole match.

Sometime that can be problematic ao it will be interesting to see him perform in this match.

  7. Can someone please explain the reasons why penalty for handball was the correct decision yesterday in Germany-Austria [Oliver] but it was not penalty in Poland-Austria [Meler]? Here is the video link posted by ESR in case you don't remeber clearly the moment I am referring about: https://www.streambug.io/cv/fc9c7c For me both should be penalties. To my surprise, UEFA supported Meler decison and I struggle to understand why, these two incidents are simillar. What are the criteria that differentiate them?

    1. * yesterday in Germany-Denmark [Oliver]

    2. In the Poland example I think the left arm is closer to the body and not creating a barrier like the right arm of the Danish player. I also think psychologically we view a ball hitting the arm flush differently than a ball grazing a finger even though the laws don't treat them differently.

      Delete
    3. IMO both should be assessed as deliberate blocking a pass with arm out of the body and therefore penalty should've been awarded in both mentioned incidents. However, UEFA pay much attention to how much the arm is out of the body. While yesterday it was 100% penalty in UEFA due to arm position totally out from the body, the arm position in POLAUT is more tricky and in some clips UEFA deemed such positions (although a bit lower) as close to the body - natural.

And to think there is a very simple solution to handball (great Zbigniew Przesmycki's idea): all cases when deliberately blocking a shot or a pass with an arm even slightly out of the body = penalty. Why? If you have enough time to position yourself in order to block a shot/pass, you a) take the risk, b) have enough time to care also for your arm's position.

  8. I wonder who will be the fourth for the quarterfinals besides: Turpen, Vincic and Taylor?
