ReplyDeleteSome people reported that the players were not aware there was a VAR check and they thought the game was regularly finished, but since I can't verify 100% this info, I tend to think that it wasn't communicated anything to them regarding the check of the goal, and all can be "regular" if we think that for safety reasons game had to be stopped for some hours.
Espen Eskas assigned to Argentina will be under the spotlights after that, but certainly the game against Iraq is something different than the previous involving Morocco. We will see which referee Collina will appoint for MD3 to the South American team, given that a win on MD2 is expected.
As for the rest, FIFA continues with the known policy, the women who were appointed in past to Men's tournaments get such games, after Yamashita now Alves Batista.
I think the Japanese will get a second game, but she will return to the Women's assignments.
Also, I wanted to say, it's possible she made everything good in that game about the rest, but the final assessment, given such crucial mistake, honestly can't change. All the rest is expected by a referee at this level, we are allowed to ask more.
OT - Abdulkadir Bitigen, Turkish FIFA Referee, who officiated UE SANTA COLOMA (AND) - FC MIDTJYLLAND (DEN) CL game on Wednesday has been dropped from Turkish Super League list. He is not included to the list of 25 referees. Below referees were selected for this season.

DeleteThere is new federation and president elected. Most of the clubs were not happy with his performance. He was believed to be refereeing in super league and FIFA because of his father, who was an ex referee.

Even though the level of play has clearly surpassed the level of officiating in the women's game. Which leads to some frustrating and at times head scratching moments.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy watching Women's football more than men's. Women have integrity are respectful and are far more honest. They step out onto the pitch to simply play the game. Diving, playacting, dissent, and overall gamesmanship are minimal the majority of the time.

And, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Collina puts Penso on a men's KO match. It would be very strange to have female referees crossover but not use the woman who you just gave the SF and Final of the WWC to. Plus, US women should be in KO stage while US men might not be.
Tess Olofsson is expected to get at least a Men's game,being a preselected referee for the Men's World Cup.

Yes, if there is a woman in the male tournament on MD3, it can only be Garcia or Olofsson due to rest issues. And then the Swede seems more likely.
DeleteAnd I also agree with you regarding Penso, a male QF seems possible. This could also explain, why she (probably) doesn't work on women's MD3 - where BRA-ESP looked like a great option for her.
Furthermore it would make it easier to use men in the women's KO stage, which seems helpful due to the limited options among the female referees.

I haven't posted here for a long time due to a lot of travel this summer and unfortunately haven't been able to watch more than one match in the olympics, which was ArgMar where Nyberg does an excellent match. Phenomenal match control, dialogue and above all he doesn't buy into all the nonsense out there. Unfortunately, boring aftermath that I don't think he could have influenced in any way. Nyberg is already a candidate for the final, but that won't happen if Argentina gets there.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Yamashita, I haven't seen the whole match, only highlights, as well as the much-discussed situation x 10. But I have to say that I don't really agree with the crowd here. If you look at the situation without slow motion and think about her (completely correct) position, it is not an easy situation, where I fully understand the decision that is made. The decision is not correct, but understandable (!) In the same way that VAR cannot change this decision, VAR could not have changed the decision if she had let the play go and there was a foul. Judging her based on this decision is something I cannot support. Above all, considering that many here consider that the effort was otherwise good.

ReplyDeleteAgree. I think he ought to have awarded the minnows a penalty for a late challenge by the goalkeeper a few minutes prior. Also, a (less intense) Spain kick out a minute prior to the RC was completely ignored. Dissent guiedelines went out the window in the sending off scene too, extremely aggressive confronting of the Emirati ref after the decision made (Cvetkovic should be praised for her alertness re the VC).

My opinion from watching Adel Al-Naqbi at other events, such as the most recent Arabian Gulf Cup, is that he is not at the required level for FIFA events. His selection (together with Tantashev's) seems indicative of the very poor level of AFC refereeing at the present time.

BUT, I am not surprised that he initially gave only a Yellow. Because as I watch him at the monitor. I get the feeling that he's desperately searching for something to justify just giving a Yellow.
Which to be honest, based on the direction (misguided) IFAB is taking the sport and how most Ref Comms use the "22 start and 22 end" mantra. Referees are now conditioned to under-punish and show Yellows.

I don’t think it’s a super bad error like you guys do. If he had thought it was SPA that’s one thing. But he gave the yellow card for DOGSO because it was a penalty kick and, according to his announcement, he had thought the foul was a challenge for the ball. More understandable mistake than assessing that as SPA.

DeleteI'm curious to see if Emikar Calderas (VEN) is able to recover her pre–World Cup form. She entered the World Cup as a referee who had the opportunity to go far in the tournament. But her performances were disappointing, and her tournament (deservedly) came to an early end.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Calderas is a poor referee. She didn't impress at either of her tournaments: England-Haiti which I guess most people remember, but her Euro actually wasn't good enough either. Nothing happened in Austria-N.Ireland but in her second game, dead rubber Finland-Germany, the Venezuelan ref should have been rejected: serious shortfalls in disciplinary management (a huge number of even modern-times YCs which she ignored) and the game nearly got out of control due to her poor decisions.
DeleteI think Calderas was always an astroturfed name personally (same as even worse Batista) contrary to Fortunato/Carvajal/K.Garcia/Borjas, the latter being one of the world's ≈top3 female officials.
Two weeks after the end of EURO 2024, it turns out that Orsato has not yet submitted his resignation, and the first meeting of the Serie A and B referees committee of the next season is scheduled for next week. Now he will have to be invited if still active referee, if he doesn't announce the resignation in these few remaining days. Of course, after the public announcement it wouldn't make him look good, but surprises cannot be ruled out. I think he suffered a lot for not having officiated the EURO final, he really cared a lot about it, but I don't think this is a behavior to keep in all cases... we will follow how things will turn.

ReplyDeleteAt least supportable penalty call to Japan in the added time of first half. In case of no whistle, I think Coote would have supported as well. We can mention as comparison the famous Spain - Germany situation at EURO... maybe this one even less evident in terms of open arm, but still never a clear and obvious mistake in both cases.
ReplyDelete88': OFR for a handball penalty. Well, in this case I must say that I disagree with Coote and the call he made, you can read the position of the arm as clear support of the body. I don't think this one had the evidence of "something" more to consider it as 100% penalty. But maybe this latter argument in FIFA world is indeed not valid...

ReplyDeleteKathryn Nesbitt with a poor moment right now, at first VAR intervention to disallow a goal scored, then a few later another wrong offside decision. About Penso, mostly an easy game to handle, I invite you to watch the yellow card in 37', an ineresting management by the US referee, very clear decision. The challenge was reckless. Nigerian player didn't want to accept and protested in a rather animated way (very close to YC for protest), but Tori Penso convinced her by making a gesture like "You have to accept this decision". Gave an overall quite good impression, but of course people can disagree asking for a more severe treatment by referee.

ReplyDeleteJust checked the two OFR, very evident situations, nobody can question and that's even worse (because very often we see "borderline" OFRs in FIFA tournaments).

Definitely not good, we remember her last game at big tournaments, a disappointment, and indeed now again.

Chefren Even ignoring the OFRs, it was so passive. The players were refereeing the game!! Definitely one or two missed YC too. It was such an easy game and she found it too difficult

67-68’ rising tension over back-to-back throw-in decisions; I liked Calderas’s alert reaction on the second one to diffuse the situation (and innovative technique of getting the ball back into the correct player’s hands!)
Finally, 90’ Australia’s winning goal. But to me, it looks like a clear impeding foul by Australia #12 against Zambia #11 just as Australia wins the ball. The Australian player looks at the Zambian and then swerves directly into her path unnaturally. Very far away from the ball and there is clear contact. I’m super surprised this didn’t trigger a review.

DeleteThe action by Australian player looks indeed deliberate to prevent opponent from reaching ball. A foul would have been expected to be whistled, but about VAR, you know, that's a very atypical situation. with Zambia having already lost ball before. I think most of the "blame" must be addressed to referee for not having whistled.

2-1 by USA, regular goal. Correct assessment by Argentinian referee, it looked like a possible foul after keeper lost ball, but attacker clearly arrived before, and then the contact was unavoidable.
