Esther Staubli with a new important role inside UEFA - National associations refereeing specialist

UEFA has recently appointed former international and UEFA Women’s Champions League final referee, Esther Staubli, to work with the national associations.  She has been elected to increase the refereeing support UEFA provides to its members, in addition to the UEFA Referee Convention and the panel members assigned to one or more individual national associations (see below).

The aim is to unify refereeing systems across Europe with three specific targets: 1. Consistency in decision-making o A common system to ensure that referees across different leagues and competitions follow the same guidelines and standards. This would reduce discrepancies in officiating and promote fairness. 2. Improved communication o A single technical language for communication among referees to eliminate language barriers, making it easier to share information, discuss decisions and collaborate effectively during international matches. 3. Enhanced training and development o A standardised training programme for referees across Europe – a pyramid system based on UEFA’s Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE) – to ensure that all officials are equally well prepared and knowledgeable about the latest laws and technologies, including video assistant refereeing (VAR).

Esther Staubli role is to help all European federations and UEFA reach these targets. She will do so in two ways: first, by helping the UEFA Referee Convention Panel members  about refereeing issues affecting the national association as necessary and, second, by secure funding for new refereeing projects in  national associations via different UEFA programmes. Another area in which Esther will interact  is as UEFA’s new point of contact regarding FIFA referees’ domestic appointments. These monthly updates should be sent to Esther in Excel format. Esther will also maintain regular contact with national refereeing managers appointed from outside domestic countries, and she can also  help in finding such managers on request.

  1. Good first half by Danny Makkelie in Georgia-Albania, a game with a passionate atmosphere but still at an absolutely normal difficulty level for the officials so far. Only point of criticism would be a missed (reckless) foul by Geo no.14 in 37' [clip: streambug.org/cv/fcdf5f].

    1. Still a good performance in the second half by Makkelie, who diligently followed play and generally made accurate judgements, assuring full control even as the game reached the later stages. Georgia were probably demanding a penalty in the sequence which brought the game's first two YCs (for LoR holding and then to the coach) and while they were right that the Dutch ref had missed a foul, the offence was clearly outside the box [clip: https://www.streambug.io/cv/ca8557].

Overall it was a concentrated and expected level performance by Makkelie.
