  1. First remark, no Kovacs, but many Romanian referees.
My idea is that he was originally planned for Aston Villa - Bayern, then given to Petrescu (too much sonorous game for the latter, I think), while maybe Massa was sent to Bratislava as replacement, where one could have easily expected Petrescu (classic game for him in CL). Also, I think we can draw maybe the conclusion that Martinez Munuera got the Champions League game because Gil Manzano was out (so a replacement from the same country). Then, definitely hard to understand about the possible game for Marciniak, with the Polish being the other Elite out from this set.
About the appointments, interesting to see Tohver with an Italian team after the extremely poor performance in Gibraltar, that's even more remarkable because you know, there is always focus on such games. Nevertheless, I think that Italian side is still big favorite and committee thinks there shouldn't be issues in the game to be played in Sweden. I want also to say that at moment committee seems to have put other important factors, to make assignments, as very important ones, apart from the performances, and the names of the referees. My idea is that they are really particular with the tests during the courses. Best results for the referees can bring alwyas an assignment.
Several German appointments, the best game of this matchday is for Stieler, who confirms a very good reputation by committee at moment, it's "only" Europa League, but it's like a CL clash in Porto.
Also, about Germany, it seems Brand as VAR has joined the big circle of UEFA VAR at Nyon. He will be there this week, working with Del Cerro Grande as AVAR.
The games covered from Nyon seem to be: Porto - Manchester United, Twente - Fenerbahçe, Athletic - AZ, Rangers - Lyon, Hoffenheim - Dynamo Kyiv, Real Sociedad - Anderlecht, Lazio - Nice.
Still about VARs, Bebek, after very good times, seems to have lost consideration, appointed only as AVAR in that game is indeed strange.
Sylwestrzak with committee member as observer, there was already important focus on the Polish referee, and now after all happened with the others, even more. They have only Marciniak at moment, somebody must follow.

    1. I think I know why Petrescu was sent to Birmngham. Because Hategan will retired from the field and remain only VAR, because he will be demoted from Elite. And I think, UEFA want Petrescu in Elite.

      Delete
    2. Chefren, what do you think, any chance for Tohver to get an appointment in CL this season?

      Delete
    3. Following his path and the big trust by committee, it seems possible indeed, looking also at other Category 1 with long experience getting it. Would have been better without that performance in previous game, but I think they rely on the Estonian referee and he could do that.

      Delete
    4. "but many Romanian referees" - is 3 crews considered much considering that there were zero in MD1 (none in UCL, UEL, UECL in MD1)?

      Delete
  2. To replace Kovacs, I don't understand why Petrescu was sent to a difficult game, while Massa to an easiest game; it would have had more sense to keep Petrescu in Bratislava and to send Massa in the Birmingham. It seems that nationality is more important than skills. Of course supposing Chefren's hypothesis
Very good assignment for Stieler in a Cl similar match. And I would say good also for Tohver, never easy to manage Rome, considering the attention that committee has on Italian teams. Impressed by how many germans are appointed; only Dingert and Dankert are out, but we know that they are now mainly (or only) VAR

  3. Rosetti declared that on the Qualifiers Round held in the week of the 21st august, a referee answered very bad to an observer during the match analysis after the game, and for consequence it resulted in not being appointed for Nations League and UCL 1/2 matchdays.

    1. I don't know that could be Kovacs or somebody else. Kovacs last game was Molde with Elfsborg and the observer was Alain Hamer in EL. Also, Hategan was upset because he will be demoted in winter because of bad notes in his last games. And he will retired from the field and remain only VAR. Another romanian referee who will lost the UEFA badge is Marcel Barsan, who is 42 years and stuck in 2Category. They will be replaced by Szabolcs Kovacs, Istvan little brother, and Rares Vidican.

      Delete
    2. I also heard some rumors about possible demotions from Elite category on next update (not Hategan but other names). So, it seems as finally UEFA will manage to "use" also the demotions, after many and many years in which an Elite referee, once gained the status, was untouchable. We will see, I'm very curious. Really sorry for Hategan, his performances in recent times were not good, but overall, considering also the past and what he had achieved it seems rather unfair. Of course, even impossible indeed, if they don't demote before him other referees from Elite to 1.

    1. A normal assignment for a referee who in past was more in focus by committee, then they left for a while him, no interesting appointments for a long time. Regular Category 1 but at this point without perspective, it seems. Fully suitable game for him.

  5. All of First Cat promotees this summer have been appointed to EL in either MD1 (Sozza, Brooks, Minakovic, Godinho) or MD2 (Sylwestrzak, Jablonski, Berka, Barbu), bar Frid.

Seems like all four have relatively important observers, too (Sajn, Díaz Vega, Çakir, Hauge)

Jablonski, Minakovic, Godinho, Sylwestrzak & Berka were appointed to Nations League games in the last international break (Sozza had U21 UKRSRB, Brooks & Berka were injured)

Wonder how many of them will make CL debut by the end of the league stage. It will depend on their further performances but I'd expect at least three.

  6. There is an error on the Plzen - Ludogorets match. It is played in Plzen, not in Riga.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Annoying game in Prague, where home team and crowd put a lot of pressure on Treimanis to try to have a penalty go there way or have the opponent yellow carded by lots of theatrics. This after an early penalty, obviously correctly awarded to the guests.

  8. pitch conditions in LAZNIC looking dire

    1. VAR intervention for allowing a goal by Lazio, wrong flag by AR2, very tight but NO FLAG was expected decision.
Then penalty to Lazio a few minutes ago, correct decision ny Fesnic, classic foul by keeper, no DOGSO, no card.
However, the call was not accepted by Nice players and he had to struggle a bit to allow the execution, keeper was booked for protests.

      Delete
  9. What a penalty in Rome… ok, the pitch is becoming a pool, but that was a huge dive. Where is VAR?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Fesnic gave the Nice GK a YC for dissent but he showed the notepad paper instead :D

Mostly agree, difficult for VAR to overrule the PK but seemed like a rather wrong call.

      Delete
    2. You know that in such situations attacker can do "what he wants" and in case of even minimal contact with keeper it will be always an expected whistle by referee, simply impossible for VAR to intervene, and extremely hard for referee live to take a different decision.
      Video:

      Delete
    3. GK stopped, it’s the attacker stretching the leg and causing the contact. I’d be very angry, if I was the Frenchman…

      @Quilava indeed, it’s been a nice scene 😂

      Delete
    4. And of course the referee would be wise to consider possible repercussions by Rosetti if denying an Italian team a possible penalty.

      Delete
    5. I would have also like the VAR to intervene there tbh

  10. Second YC Slavia Praha - Ajax, it's an interesting one.
I think he also played the ball, but very dangerous challenge for the opponent, reckless is justified to me.

  11. Treimanis just with no control over the players anymore, he really lacks leadership and management (soft) skills. He did bring his cards though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Treimanis let this match get completely out of his hand. It was painful to watch

      Delete
    2. Bad referee

      Very very poor.
The observer of this match has to rent the whistle of this man!
Uefa badge has to taken of from him.

      Delete
    3. I agree that Treimanis is not the best game manager out there, certainly not tonight. But we have to call out the players as well. All cards in the last 30 minutes of the game were completely justified and players behaved really bad. We can't blame that on the referee completely.

      Delete
    4. You can argue that card by card each card was completely justified, but obviously without any preventative result. And that has everything to do management and leadership skills. But yes, player behavior throughout the game was shameful, from both sides.

      Delete
    5. agree with unknown (21:15). All decisions during this match are justified, but top-class refereeing is more than applying the LOTG. This match was a perfect example of that.

      Delete
    6. One can't argue with the cards but a lack of personality from the referee was evident and caused some of the tension between the players

  12. Rangers equaliser vs Lyon. Possible offside? Dessers offside from the shot, possibly physically interfering with the goalkeeper

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good use of the VAR protocol in Besiktas Frankfurt by the Scottish crew.

OFR for DOGSO with an offside in the APP. Correct Decision of IFK for offside

Then correct penalty given to Frankfurt for clear foul

    1. now a 2nd correct PK from Beaton for Handball from Frankfurt player

      Delete
    2. Now according to host broadcaster there may have been signifcant VAR error at Ibrox for 3rd Lyon goal for no intervention when player looked offside in APP

      Delete
    3. Clip of DOGSO and OFR - https://streamable.com/6ua1g6

Quite an unusual incident and eventually the correct decision was given. Tight decision for the offside but play-on for the possible DOGSO seems quite strange

      Delete
    4. A VAR intervention for mistaken identity is reported in 17' when he gave the first penalty with YC. To be honest I haven't checked the incident yet.

      Delete
    5. believe this was miscommunicated and the player that was cautioned it was for dissent not the foul

  14. OT: Nice to see Stavrev in this competition. I think that he still have the record of number of games officiated in Europa League.

  15. OFR for Tohver, handball penalty, not easy to see live. Doubts whether it was a touch by chest or not.

    Replies
    1. Agree, not easy to see.

    2. Curiously, just one angle was shown to Tohver. From the other angle it looks chest. Correct OFR when it’s so doubtful?

    3. Clip of handball - https://streambug.org/cv/7f3297

For sure difficult for Tohver to see live. Good use of VAR though, everyone expects a penalty when they see the images.

    1. Still no Kovacs in your appointments, but I think a month suspension is enough for him. By the way which Martinez is appointed for Malta vs Moldova, because you chose Sanchez for Croatia with Scotland. And you still put Stavrev for Romanian games. And i doubt to see Smajc at Kosovo game with Ilgaz, who regular is observer in CL.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the feedback.
@Kovacs: I don't think, we have confirmed information about his situation? Therefore I left him out like others, who were missing in the last weeks, e.g. Marciniak.
      @MLTMDA: Martinez Munuera is meant.
@Stavrev: Yes, that's probably not possible. Then I swap him with Godinho.
      @Smajc: I don't see a problem there.

    3. no, Stavrev was not appointed for Romanian games as you predicted last time. last time were Agaev and Obrenovic. and about Smajc is because is from Slovenia a exYugoslavia country, so this is about, to send him to Kosovo game.

Honestly, a foul that you can easily see even without replay. Clear contact with opponent's leg, foul and YC.
It was also reported referee had to face some issues due to Belgian fans.

      Delete
    3. For me it's a strong challenge clearly. The Belgian player dosn't touch his opponent, but clearly takes possession of the ball. He keeps control of his movement, unlike an uncontrolled tackle. But... it's just my opinion. I was also expecting him to whistle

    1. What kind of card procedure is the one with Gimenez?

Same player in 10 second window being shoen YC twice is very strange.

Maybe he thought that Gimenez was not aware of that or some other reason.

      Delete
    2. Well, it seems a good performance by the Dutch.
Accurate disciplinary management, aware when card was mandatory. I can praise that.
Only point for discussion is indeed the second show of card to player in the last incident, I think it's also possible Gozubuyuk forgot he had already done that (see that the first time he was also in communication with VAR keeping a had on the earphone). But it's also possible he did that deliberately because maybe player showed to be not aware he had received a card... we can't know.
And still about the direct whistled penalty of the last clip, quite delayed, maybe AR1 cooperated, not the first time we see Gozubuyuk taking a bit of time, or indicating the stop after a while.

  25. As a general observation after two CL matchdays: Do you think, the "captain's rule" is really enforced?
Maybe the overall dissent is a bit reduced, but I think, there still were several situations, where more than one player ran towards the referee to complain, but no cautions were issued.
So is there really a significant difference compared to last season in this regard?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't see any particular or different situation from the past, indeed, but it's also true that it's hard to have a focus exactly on this aspect, and seeing a referee booking a player just because he is not captain but he is talking to him, seems to be out of the expected things...

      Delete
    2. I think that in CL you can still talk and surround ref and get away with it.

The one league that is consistent with punishing too much talking is Premier League.

They are even stricter than last year, that why we see plenty cards almost every match:City vs Arsenal 9,Bournemouth vs Chelsea 14,Tottenham vs Arsenal 8,Newcatle vs City 8 and the list goes...

That's the only big league that is completely following the rules but the irony is that they were the league that was famous for small amount of cards and refs turning a blind eye.

Spain and Italy however are totally opposite, their refs are now trying to be in shadows, keeping cards as much as they can and being flexible with talking to players.

I think that for both of these leagues number of cards in the match is going down progresively,English League is way above them in terms of being strict with rules.

And if you ask me,I like PL way more.

And about timewasting and added time...
Let's just say that other leagues can learn from PL in that aspect.

  26. Quick look at Olympiakos - Braga, normal difficulty game for Sylwestrzak, under the eyes of a committee member.

Very good decision, playerfrom Braga fully aware about what he was doing

Correct or at least OK cards for the rest. Maybe he could have saved one, but nothing relevant. Very mandatory one for a very reckless in 88', correctly issued. Should be assessed as expected level performance if supported as one can think, in the 20' incident.
