  1. France - Israel: missing / late appointment due to the incidents in Ajax - Maccabi Tel Aviv and then more focus on this game? But how could this influence the appointment? Very likely it should be for something out of the field and not involving referee, in case (rather, the UEFA delegate). Or maybe just a coincidence that exactly this one with Israel is missing, but it can be for other reasons...

  3. OT: just read in the (Dutch) news that Faruk Koca, the Turkish (ex) chairman of Ankaragücü, who attacked Halil Umut Meler some time ago after a match, has been sentenced to prison for approximately 3.5 years.

  4. Tobias Stieler for France-Israel

  5. Wow! A video on X of David Coote speaking about his dislike of Jurgen Klopp, clearly an old video which has now been posted a few years later. It may be just a lookalike, but I met Coote on my referee course in 2017 and he sounds like he does in the video, so now a massive decision for Howard Webb to make and something he absolutely must address publicly

    1. Seems like a replacement then, Stieler already did France against Belgium in September

      Delete
    2. Yes, should be a replacement.

I doubt the Refcom appointed a Elite referee on beforehand. Probably a Cat2/Cat1. Game was not expected to be challenging on the pitch itself, the French team so much stronger and playing at home. It seemed a good opportunity for a young referee (from a smaller country) to gain a nice experience at Stade de France.

However, now with increased media attention and focus, 3000 cops and acte de présence of the French president, UEFA didn’t want to take a risk? Or thought the initial appointed referee wasn’t ready for it? What happened in Amsterdam is serious sh*t

    3. Good arguments Ref88. If committee switched from a less experienced referee to Stieler, that should be the reason. We saw all the appointments for Israeli clubs and national team so far, I think the difficulty of the game doesn't matter, easy win by France expected...

  7. BREAKING NEWS
English referee and FIFA VMO David Coote has been suspended by PGMOL after a video surfaced on him calling Liverpool sh*t and Jürgen Klopp a c*nt on social media:

    PGMOL statement:
David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.

    1. We can never know with AI and so on nowadays, but it certainly doesn't look good for him I would say. Especially since he's refereed Liverpool multiple times before and after that video was allegedly made

      Delete
  8. Well the video of David Coote not sure when it was filmed but he suggests he has a grudge against Jurgen Klopp after lockdown, he was involved in huge controversy as a VAR in Everton vs Liverpool earlier the following season where he didn't even check for a red card for Pickford's knee high tackle on Van Dijk and controversially ruled out a last minute liverpool winning goal.

    1. While I think the specific comments about Liverpool and Klopp will be the most sensational aspect of this, I imagine the actual investigation will focus more on Coote's state of mind and how he allowed himself to be in a situation where such a recording was possible and such rhetoric freely flowed from him.

Don't get me wrong, the content of the remarks are enough to be very problematic for the PGMOL overall and very harmful to Coote's ability to be assigned to any match with implications for Liverpool. But the associated behavior might be what actually sinks him as a top-flight official overall.

    2. The whole Coote affair can be summed up in a short thought.
Only important thing to check if the video is real and not artificially created.
If true, in all cases, then it must be the end of career.
Obviously unacceptable what he says in the video.
Even if perhaps drunk, not mentally present or something else, the fault of being recorded in that video is atrocious for a referee at this level.
Shocking and not a little. There is no forgiveness in these cases, because it is impossible to return to refereeing, especially following the implications with the team mentioned, which obviously can't be deleted of modified.
My only hope is that the video is all fake, otherwise it is one of the worst pages ever.

  9. Also he was VAR in the Arsenal vs Liverpool game last season when Odegaard's blatant handball wasn't punished

  10. Srdjan Jovanovic failed fitness tests again due to injury. I dont know why he dont take break and recover.. Even when he ref in league you can see him strugling..

  11. Rosetti to observe Rumsas in Portugal - Poland.
It's the key game for the Lithuanian, looking for promotion to Elite category. One could even say that he already did enough to get it in the years, but this looks to be definitely the last step.
Oliver with only Gillett as VAR at moment no AVAR appointment.
Very easy to think that Coote was in a role of the two in the VAR room and then now to be replaced...

    1. And also, Peter Bankes confirmed as AVAR in SVNNOR

  13. What is your view of appointing Petrescu for that match, as Cheferin as a observer;
Krogh Hansen with Mikulski (who usually observe Elite referees) ?

Any other interesting appointment for you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Darko Čeferin was a Slovenian FIFA referee and is in no way related to the UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin

      Delete
    2. Another strong appointment for Petrescu after his recent CL and EL games. Looks like he is on a good path towards Elite, but maybe Fesnic also getting good games and being much younger is a problem.
Krogh is a normal appointment, I think. Top game of the group, but only league C, so it fits his current status, I think.

Obrenovic also has to be seen as strong Elite candidate with this appointment (+ 2 CL games already).

Sidiropoulos only in league C again and without CL game, should be a candidate for demotion.

      Delete
  14. Turpin is back in action.
Should get a big game in MD5.
Could be Liverpool vs Real Madrid.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rosetti wants to see Rumsas in a one-side game really huh..If he really is allegedly ready to move up to the elite, why should a game like this be the final test? It makes no sense... And btw who is also in this situation of allegedly going up to the elite only lacking the final tests??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, Portugal - Poland is not that one-sided game, honestly. Maybe Poland not in the best moment, but still a nice clash and in my opinion open to any outcome.
We will see, important to watch this one with the Lithuanian involved.
In my opinion at moment he should be listed as nr. 1 in a "supposed" ranking of the Category 1 referees fighting for a promotion. In recent years, hehas been definitely the one more in focus and the one who achieved more.

      Delete
  16. Spanish referees are back, and it's interesting we see again Martinez Munuera after this game in CL. Of course this time without his brother, but with different assistant referees. Most of the mistakes were about offside for sure, but his performance as referee was not the best one!
Scharer back after the mistake in Champions League, it will be interesting to see whether San will be confirmed as VAR. I think so, it was just one mistake, even if very big and without explanations.
Decent assignment for Balakin in Sweden, at least it seems now he is following a path and he can get more interesting games in future.
The rest, quite normal appointments, apart from Fotias in Greece, this one must be mentioned and if possible also watched. Feeling is that they are looking now for the new nr.1 from that country, after Sidiropoulos will leave the scene. We saw even Elite referees in past assigned to a clash like the one in Freiburg, but to me in recent times Bosnian national team lost most of their talent.
Last comments about the VAR: Kristo Tohver after having announced his semi-retirement will be VAR, possible that now the focus will be on other Estonian referees and I'm really sorry if he couln't reach more, like the Champions League debut. Moreover, some words must be said again on Bebek... defining his career as strange is maybe not enough. In both field and VAR it seems he reached the top for a while, but then suddenly something changed. From a quite trusted and experienced UEFA VAR now it seems as his role is over again, but, like it was for the field duties, he hasn't "fully" retired and he is still there, working only as AVAR. Very, very particular. He was never stable in his career, but in terms of experience and years of UEFA games, it's rare if not almost impossible to find similar names. A case maybe to be studied, the first regret is that he could have achieved absolutely more. And yes, all the troubles with Crotian referees in recent time in domestic league, surely didn't help him in keeping a reputation and solid assignments in UEFA...

    ReplyDelete
  17. There has been no demotion during more years from Elite, only referees who has stopped the careers!

  18. Krogh at Romania vs Kosovo is a very risky choice, for two reasons:

    1) He refereed Steaua Bucharest vs Sparta Prague in UCL preliminary rounds this season and his performance was heavily criticized by Romanian sport outlets. Krogh took several decision in favor of the away team in that game (team which lined up two Danish players and also has Danish coach). Some of the controversial decisions in that game:
29' - possible missed pen for FCSB + 2YC awareded for dissent: https://youtu.be/t7RHZnyqEG4?si=nhPwmYDKpfMIYk5k&t=221

50' - clear 2nd YC missed for Preciado (Sparta). Even their coach realized it should have been a RC and replaced the player after two minutes:
    https://youtu.be/t7RHZnyqEG4?si=PNUEU2F6OGWMXBo4

    2) Romania is one of the few countries that doesn't recognize Kosovo. Relations between them are very tense, and the game played in Bucharest in 2023 was stopped for almost one hour, because the Romanian ultras showed a banner saying "Kosovo is Serbia". Also at the game played in September in this Nations League group in Pristina, Kosovo fans had a savage behavior, booing and whistling the Romanian national anthem, throwing with bottles towards the bench and invading the pitch three times in the 2nd half.

The 50,000 tickets for this game were sold out in less than 3 days, and a win for Romania can guarantee them a place in the WC 2026 play-offs through the Nations League path, so the game it is expected to be played in a volcanic atmosphere, for which I have big doubts that Morten Krogh is the right choice.
