  1. Good mix of appointments there, any appointments can we read into regarding the future?

Good to see Scottish representation with IMO the best candidate out of the newer FIFA referees. Also very happy to see Sam Barrott who as I have said previously has the potential to be future elite for England.
Also regarding the fourth officials are they nominated by home country FA? Kennard-Kettle seems to have done all of Newcastle's home games which I don't know if that's common or not.

    1. Koppel, Dechepy, Östling and Csonka with the games officially broadcasted by UEFA. Marchetti with a very solid game as well.

Regarding fourth official: it's normal to appoint a non-FIFA (very often future FIFA / UEFA Core) young referee based closest where the game is to be played in UYL.

  2. OT:

What a crazy ending in Al Ahly vs Al Riyad match for Obrenovic.

Doubtful penalty for Al Ahly, deserved penalty for Riyad and RC for Ahly player.

All in last minutes of the match,1st penalty in last minutes very doubtful.

Riyad player is using his hand to the ground,Ahly player kicks the hand and Obrenovic whistles.

What's even more controversial is that Var Jug called him for OFR and he pointed again to the spot.

RC good decision and Riyad penalty after VAR correct.

    1. I only caught the last 20 minutes of that game, and even that was a total disaster. Sure, Obrenovic made a couple of wrong calls, but the players’ behavior was an absolute disgrace. They can throw as much money at this league as they want — no one will ever take it seriously if that kind of conduct toward a top European referee is tolerated.

And honestly, who’s in charge of referees in this Saudi league? Whoever it is must be a complete joke, probably swimming in cash, because there’s no other way this kind of thing would be allowed to happen.

By the way, the fourth official was Vincic, and for the last twenty minutes he looked like a schoolboy standing between the benches — nobody took him seriously at all.

    2. That's the standard in AFC. Almost impossible to see cautions for dissent, mobbing and delaying the restart. Respect for officials is zero. Unfortunately, FIFA adopted this approach...

    5. Nyberg has already been monitored by scouts like Vassaras, for example. That said, I believe the Swede will be in one of the four big games in the next round (Liverpool, Paris, Turin or Manchester).

  4. Joakim Östling (SWE) recently changed his surname to Sars. For some reason, UEFA hasn't yet changed his name on their website.

    1. This just reminds me of former French FIFA referee Alain Sars, who in my opinion was clearly underrated, as he was never nominated for a World Cup or European Championship. In 2006 in Germany, I would have actually expected him rather than Eric Poulat with hardly any major international appearances.

    2. Ostling probably changed his name because he is a dreadful referee and wants a new start.

  5. A little boring and I decided to make some predictions for the qualifiers next month:

    Assuming that:
    -Hdz Hdz is injured.
-Balakin hasn’t officiated a game since September 14 (according to transfermarkt).
-Fotias, Saggi, Vergoote, Colombo, Derevinskiy, Van Der Eijk and Barbu are in Qatar.
-Due to the situation in Turkey, no Turkish referee will be appointed.
-After BAROLY, Schnyder will have a good time to "rest".

    4. I think, group F should get full Elite, because three teams are still battling for second place.
UKR-ISL might very well be a direct game for second place, so I would expect someone bigger there.

On the other hand, SWESVN, GEOESP, POLNED, ENGSRB and MNECRO would be games, where a "smaller name" might be possible.

  6. According to media reports in Austria, Sebastian Gishamer will make his Champions League debut next week. According to reports, the match will be between Qarabag (Azerbaijan) and Chelsea (England). It is reported that this information was communicated some time ago by the head of the referees' department to a wider circle of people.

    1. UEFA definitely not happy about that. Once again, if compared to past and I must say not so many years ago, today it seems rather impossible to keep CL assignments confidential.

    2. I also found the article in question (at least I assume we are talking about the same one, since I only found that one). The same journalist wrote an article last year with the headline "Does the ÖFB referees' commission want to make FIFA look foolish?" because, in his opinion, Jakob Semler did not meet the requirements to be promoted to FIFA Referee. I personally already found the article harmful at the time (FIFA can decide that on its own), and I also find it harmful this time, although the actual whistleblower is probably someone else. For me, the correct course of action would have been to immediately report the forwarding of the information. Yesterday, I also read somewhere that Arnes Talic is supposed to become a FIFA Referee starting in 2026 (subject to FIFA confirmation). I assume that he will replace Alan Kijas, who has been out of action for almost a year ("only" serving as a VAR).

  7. As we can imagine, Mariani, after returning from Chile should appear in Champions League. So it will be interesting to see whether his assistant Bindoni will be confirmed. Adding an update to what we already discussed here on the blog after Napoli-Inter, Bindoni has been officially recognized by Rocchi as the only responsible for the penalty call, during the public broadcast Open VAR, where Rocchi reviews all incidents and shows referees' VAR clips. He stated that the assistant interference in calling that penalty for Napoli, the one I posted the video of here on the blog, was a very serious mistake and he went far beyond his duties.
Following that decision, in the audio clip, by the way, Mariani had asked him, “Are you sure?” and the assistant confirmed, so Mariani really could'’t do anything other than award the penalty. After that, in the following midweek round, the assistant didn't appear at all, and he is not appearing this weekend either, the appointments were released today. Mariani has been assigned to a Serie B game on Saturday, tomorrow, only with assistant Tegoni, who wasn't in Naples because he's from Milan, and since Inter was involved, Rocchi wanted to avoid that situation (but, as big joke from the fate, there were an issue with the other assistant referee.....).
That said, I'm now curious to see whether, after two full rounds of suspension and Rocchi's very negative words about the assistant from Venice, he will be still confirmed in Champions League with Mariani, who, as we know, usually has this fixed trio, and they are expected to go to the World Cup. Based on Rocchi's statements, it would make no sense to leave him out of both Serie A and Serie B for two rounds, only to then allow him to officiate in Champions League.
However, as we know, there has often been this inconsistency between the two competitions (domestic and international), and we have seen referees, as well as assistants, appointed in Europe right after significant mistakes. I think in this case there could be an exception, because when the appointments will be published, Bindoni's name, at least from the Italian audience's point of view, will be hugely discussed. Maybe they will send him to a low-profile Champions League match, but that would still cause discussion. Or perhaps they will just ignore. In any case, we'll see, I’m really curious. Tegoni will certainly be there, we'll see if they replace the other one.
Sozza could also appear in Champions League after his debut, which didn't seem to go too badly. As for Guida, I don't expect him after three matches in CL (now assigned to Milan - Roma on Sunday evening), while it's possible that Massa could return, if not now, then in the next round.

The cancellation of RC for Vaessen by the disciplinary committee occurred in February 2024 under exactly the same situation.

As I have written before, the problem is that almost no one questions the decisions of the disciplinary committee, criticizes the referees, and the referee committee says absolutely nothing.

    1. Ridiculous decision from the disciplinary committee (who even are they?). To me, the goalkeeper moves his arm and blocks the ball, it's a clear handball and DOGSO.

When a similar situation happened in England last season, Howard Webb (head of PGMOL) went out and publically disagreed with the decision and backed the referee and VAR involved. The Dutch committee should do the same imo.

  10. One of the most impressive refereeing performances in recent time, now, I don't want to say in years, though in some aspects that might even apply, but certainly in recent Serie A matches, took place just now in Napoli-Como by Luca Zufferli, who officiated the match in what, in my opinion, was a superb outcome. He kept a perfect disciplinary standard, issuing mandatory cards from the first fouls already in the first half, and, moreover, he even went a bit against his usual style, which in other circumstances allows him to control matches. Above all, he displayed a strong presence, an immediate reaction to all events, self-confidence, and proactive management with the players, basically, it's hard to ask for more.
The match remained open until the very end, with a result that stayed 0-0. A penalty was awarded to Como in the first half, a classic penalty where the attacker, in this case Morata, moves the ball to have contact with keeper; unfortunately, in modern football still marked as clear penalties. But regardless of that, it was for sure a performance that makes one regret the current state of Serie A referees, because such a level is rarely seen anymore. To be honest, I don't want to exaggerate, but this match delighted me. The 1990-born referee from Friuli Venezia Giulia fully deserved the international badge that will follow for him in the next weeks.

  11. Very shortly after his CL debut, Igor Pajač was in charge of todays derby match in Croatian league Dinamo Zagreb - Rijeka.

Several situations were controversial, but mostly the inexplicable lack of reaction towards Dinamo's captain in 77', that received only a YC after a foul and a serious of unsportmanlike conducts, to say the least. Unbeliavable mistake imo
