ReplyDeleteIt was obvious he wasn't going to be picked due to not being at recent seminars but still think Siebert will consider himself unlucky. Bad few years for Spain with only 1 group game for Manzano in 2024 and now Hernandez likely to only be FO this tournament (Only 1 AR picked) which is a good achievement for him but he's been helped by Manzano and Martinez struggling.

ReplyDeleteWe have 52 referees, which means 36 main referees plus 16 reserves.
There are 88 assistant referees: 72 active and 16 reserves.
Since we have 16 stadiums, the reserve referees can be based in one stadium for the entire tournament to avoid unnecessary travel.
There are 72 group stage matches, which means each referee will handle 2 matches.
A good plan by FIFA.
I highly doubt you'll see each reserve duo assigned to one stadium. Obviously, I could be wrong. But I think it's much more likely they'll be divided in regional groups with a 5-5-6 or 4-6-6 split (western region has fewer venues). And then they'd work within those regions. It makes very little sense to stick a reserve and his/her assistant at one hotel in a host city and have them sit there for 20 days. That's not how tournament officiating works.

DeleteI think, the reserve referees should also be considered as real reserves, not only as fourth officials. So in case of an injury or a very bad performance by a main referee, a reserve referee could get a game with an assistant from another team.
So while the 2 games for everyone strategy seems obvious, reality might very well deviate from that.
About the regions. Is it known, that the referees will be split into the three regions, which were used for the group distributions? Or are that only assumptions for now?

ReplyDeleteTo start, I want to apologize if I come across as too harsh in my comments about the list of UEFA referees who will be at the World Cup this year.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I hope this is Rosetti’s last list in the committee and that it’s time for changes in that aspect. What I don’t like seeing, and what I’m seeing again, is one of the worst possible things. How long are passports going to play the main role? The moment it was clearly decided that Sanchez Martinez wasn’t ready for the World Cup, Hernandez was suddenly added to the seminar list. It’s obvious there has to be a spot for a Spanish referee, which is disappointing. I don’t think any of them should be in this competition right now.
Secondly, why was it necessary to humiliate Irfan Peljto like this? This is really disappointing. He’s the only referee, along with Sanchez Martinez in the end, who isn’t on the list despite going through all those “amazing” seminars and training programs. Last season he was definitely among the top 10 referees in Europe and deservedly officiated the UECL final. This season, despite some obvious mistakes, he’s just removed? Don’t tell me other referees didn’t have similar performances. Scharer is on the list without a FIFA tournament and coming off an injury, Pinheiro with his incredible “reputation” in the committee is there, Hernandez was suddenly added, and on top of all that Peljto is out? I’m sure that even beyond the Bosnian referee, there are better options not included here compared to some names on the list, and I’m not talking about the 7 or 8 obvious ones.
Maybe I’m being subjective because I tend to prefer referees from “smaller” countries who truly deserve huge respect, but this list, just like some previous appointments, shows things I don’t want to see and leaves me disappointed.
Everyone has their own opinion, and I ask for no negative comments on this, but I really don’t like how all of this looks.
I am not sure whether Roberto Rosetti is actually responsible for the UEFA nominations or rather Pierluigi Collina himself. For example, when I think about the fact that Daniel Siebert was recently rewarded for his positive performance curve, Roberto Rosetti could also have conducted a change for Germany.

DeleteI actually have a ‘scientific’ example to back this up: Cüneyt Çakır makes a questionable call in the Austria–Slovenia match, Slovenia miss out on the tournament… and from that very whistle, it’s almost as if his own career starts going downhill. Perhaps not entirely a coincidence, considering Aleksander Čeferin — Slovenia’s most powerful man in football — might have had a say in how things unfolded.
@Ugur: Yes, I (as an Austrian) remember this game very well and that Cüneyt Cakir fell significantly out of favor from that point on.

I can confirm that an original version of the official release was without José Enrique Naranjo, added later, changing from 87 to 88 assistant referees. It's incredible: they were in doubt about Hernandez Hernandez if main referee or not until the very end, they even published a first version with him as reserve. This story about Spanish referees at WC 2026 will be remembered forever.

Delete@Swiss_reffan: In past World Cup years, it sometimes happened that the finals were assigned to referees who weren't nominated for the tournament. However, you can't simply assign a Champions League final to the "next best" referee. Daniel Siebert would probably be the most/only suitable one if Bayern Munich were to be eliminated early. More realistically, though, a World Cup referee would likely arrive later.

About VAR selection:
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the number of VARs appears rather small. At WC22, there were 24 VARs, so they didn't fully scale up.
I assume, they are all working from the same location (Dallas?), so no travel needed, and therefore still doable with that group size.
Also notable, that everyone on the list seems to be possible as main VAR (at least for UEFA, I have less knowledger for the others).
For UEFA, all the questionable seminar participants without CL games in this season have been removed.
With the seminar list, some of the omissions were already clear, but one should mention again, that it is a bit strange, that Dingert, van Boekel and Martins are missing. The German is currently the standard VAR for Vincic, the Dutch equally leads the CL ranking with 11 games this season and the Portuguese could have been expected for Pinheiro (and as language partner for the Brazilians or the Hispanics).
Do you know if the still need an assistant referee as AVAR 2 or with SAOT only an operator is needed, that could be something important for assistant.

Trying to sell the 6 female officials as a success in their development is quite special...
DeleteIn 2022, we also had 6 officials (of a smaller total). This year, we will even have one support referee less.
So the only real development is, that we have now a female VAR in the squad.
And maybe, that Penso has a realistic chance for more than one game (and KO stage).
But not even another female AR and no female official outside CONCACAF isn't really progress in this area.

Delete@Philipp: To be honest, Stéphanie Frappart was already being used in 2022 more to make a (gender) political statement. The Germany-Costa Rica match was certainly not the first choice for a European referee. Presumably, the hope was for a meaningless (ideally continentally neutral) encounter on the final day of the group stage. In reality, this match turned out to be anything but irrelevant; it was more of a lesser of two evils with a clear favorite.

quite remarkable that Netherlands is the only country together with hosts USA and Mexico who have 2 VAR referees, not even Italia, England, Germany or France has 2 VARs, the Dutch must be highly respected by Collina and co.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I find it incredible that Pinheiro (and perhaps even hernandez if the rumours of a second AR are true) can make the main list whilst Scharer is only a reserve. I think Scharer is a superb referee who should be on the main list if Pinheiro can make the main one too
ReplyDeleteIt's also interesting that FIFA publishes all the names in list form rather than as trios/duos. I wouldn't be surprised if, for example, Katia Garcia were to officiate a match with an assistant from Cesar Ramos or Tori Penso, should the group standings allow it. The OFC representative could also potentially be assigned a match if a group is decided early. However, with the current format, where even third-placed teams can qualify for the round of 32, this possibility decreases: a match between third and fourth place would probably be too high-stakes. A parallel match between first and second place (if both are guaranteed to advance) might be "too much." Even in a meaningless match between first and fourth place, a referee with little tournament experience would likely not be the first choice.
ReplyDeleteBut there still might appear other reasons to give a reserve referee a game, especially injuries before or during the tournament. And then it's easier to sell, if the replacement referee was on the list the whole time and doesn't look like second choice.

The same goes for Switzerland in case of Schärer. All Swiss medias posted that Schärer will participate at the WC while none of them realised that he probably won‘t officiate a single game due to being a reserve referee.

DeleteFrom AFC, Faghani should be the only option. If there is a reasoning not to give it again to UEFA or CONMEBOL (or to give something to AFC early on), it could be his chance. Otherwise, there are surely better options.
DeleteFor CONMEBOL, Mikael's 100percenters should be the leading options. And Sampaio probably has the edge over Tello and Valenzuela to avoid the Spanish language connection with Mexico (shouldn't matter IMO, but could be a factor). Others not impossible though.
For UEFA, all the referees with previous WC games seem possible, maybe excluding Turpin for failing in the EURO opener. Furthermore there exist also arguments for Letexier and Nyberg. But the most obvious option would be Marciniak.
Diego's idea to splitting the three opening games between the confederations is an appealing idea.
Theoretically, Alireza Faghani, with his record four World Cup appearances (his third as head referee), could be a candidate, especially since he's more "assignable" in Mexico and Canada than in the USA. I just don't know if FIFA really wants to make such a "political statement" by putting him in the spotlight like this.

ReplyDeleteRather "short" comment for now, maybe I will write more later on next days: at UEFA level we have the core group of well-known names. Having mentioned the very particular Spanish management, which in my opinion will certainly go "viral" in refereeing history in terms of World Cup selection process, we can say that there is great confidence in the Swiss referee Sandro Schaerer, who will go to the World Cup as a reserve, but as we know, everything can happen. I would already like to point out that this list, with only one assistant for some referees, means very little, because we have seen how flexible FIFA has been in the past, and therefore an appointment even for those who are initially reserves is possible. For this reason, it is clear that we must also consider possible injuries, which of course we don't wish to anyone.
ReplyDeleteThat said, there is strong confidence in the Swiss referee, who would have gone to the World Cup and would have been a starting referee, and would have been a name, not exactly top-tier, but certainly one that would have been relied very much. At the same time, it is unfortunate for Pelito, who in the end unfortunately had one of his worst recent seasons, the worst for sure, but if we look at the overall picture, he has been treated very, very harshly compared to others. Now, if we think that Sánchez Martínez could have gone to the World Cup, we really have to throw up our hands; in fact, I believe he was not selected also for this reason, otherwise the comparison with the Bosnian referee would have been unacceptable.
However, it must also be said that a Spanish nationality is very different from a Bosnian one, I regret to say it, but that is the reality. In any case, it has been clear that even with Spanish nationality, the FIFA Referees Committee has been in considerable difficulty with the current case and in the end the referee from Canary Islands is the winner. Incredible achievement for him! Joined as very last the WC preselection and he was confirmed among the names. To be written in the history of international refereeing forever.
And to add, I think Schaerer was called because he couldn't demonstrate his abilities due to injury, so the argument with Peljto is valid only for the Spanish who was left home, indeed, he was always available as well and not injured. I can agree with this point of view, that means they have, as said, a very strong trust in Schaerer.
But maybe it will be unfair for the other referees, if we will officiate a game as main referee. We will see.
Shortly on the other confederations, I'm not so much updated, but clear that in Africa, AFCON changed everything and there was a shock after that. The referee from the final out, Issa Sy after his card "show" out as well (I think Busacca even fainted, while watching that video).
About CONMEBOL, I expected Abatti after a big focus on him, but apart from Sampaio and his experience, they didn't want to renounce to Claus. Abatti will have his time in future, but I liked him very much as referee.
8 years later, we will have a refereeing team again in WC. Great day for my country :)

I feel sorry for Sánchez Martínez. He narrowly missed out on the Euros and now he's been left out of the World Cup at the last minute, after having participated in the entire selection process. He refereed a semifinal at the 2023 U-20 World Cup and was injured in his second match at the 2025 tournament. Very bad luck. In La Liga, I think he has proven to be a better referee than Hernández Hernández, and internationally as well.
ReplyDeleteHernández Hernández hasn't participated in any FIFA tournaments, and he has refereed very few Champions League matches. He really hasn't proven anything; I think his selection is very unfair.
First of all, congratulations to all the referees, including those selected and those not, on their accomplishments.
ReplyDeleteMy main impression is that I'm surprised they kept the list of "main referees" so short (36 instead of the planned 39), increasing by only 25% from 2022 despite the tournament gaining 50% more teams. This shows the concentrated, non-spread-out nature of FIFA's trust.
The Reserves list, by contrast, drastically expanded (from 7, or 8 if you count Frappart, in 2022, to 16(!) in 2026). Of course, the geographic footprint of this tournament must be considered a crucial distinction from the previous edition. One of two outcomes seems probable: either some reserve referees will actually have whistles, or the 16 reserves will be exclusively assigned to the 16 host cities.
The log jam in CONCACAF seems to have been particularly brutal. I am surprised they stuck to their limit of six and left out Calderon, who should have been ahead of Martinez and some of the AFC and, surprisingly, CONMEBOL appointees. Martinez does actually deserve his appointment, hence showing the difficulty presented by the the 6-referee quota, in which 4 spots were all-but-guaranteed. Both of these Central Americans should have been in the final List.
By contrast, FIFA drastically reduced their reported quota for AFC, CAF, and OFC referees:
- AFC was planned to bring 6 referees and 2 reserves: They instead bring 4+4(!!!)
- CAF was planned to bring 6+2; instead, 5+2
- OFC was planed to bring 1+1; instead, 0+1
Calling particular attention to AFC, the decision to reduce the quota from 6 referees to 4 was, begrudgingly, a quite appropriate one. Finding 6 World-Cup-quality referees from their list would have been very difficult; even the list of four is underwhelming. Though one must spare a thought for Ma Ning, who will have attended the 2022 WC, 2025 CWC, and 2026 WC exclusively as a fourth official.
In conclusion, I am very excited for the group stage. Given the quantity of important matches, and the size and composition of the referee pool, FIFA has a problem they can solve in many different ways. For example:
A) Reserve referees could wind up with whistles.
B) Several main referees could be assigned three matches within the group stage.
C) Some referees could be asked to step up work games that are perhaps beyond their regular capabilities.
Looking back at 2022, we can observe two things.

So UEFA and CONCACAF won shares, while AFC, CAF and OFC lost.
2. In 2022, seven (24%) referees only got one game in the tournament.
So IMO it is not so clear that FIFA really plans on only using 36 referees this summer. There could be more flexibility than the number suggests and many of us expect. If FIFA e.g. feels they need to give one game to an East Asian referee, they probably wouldn't hesitate to do it.
Since there's been so much talk about "surprises" today: What surprised me most was that OFC isn't providing a referee. While it's an understandable decision given their backgrounds, one might have expected a guaranteed spot for them, considering the increased number of participants, matches, and referees. On the other hand, with this World Cup format, there are perhaps no meaningless games, so those who are selected must actually enjoy a certain level of trust. This might be a disadvantage for these referees, as the third-placed team versus fourth-placed team is also of crucial importance in this World Cup.
