DeleteMario, the official news is that he will attend the UEFA summer referee course. There can't be any official confirmation on whether he will actually be assigned to UEFA matches, but since he is attending the course, it's a logical deduction, and you would expect him to appear in at least one group stage match. However, we have to wait and see.

DeleteOT: a really tough first half for Matthew MacDermid at Aberdeen v Rangers. 5 YC's in what has been a fairly combative game. I've found his decision making on the round to be strong but sanctions have been very inconsistent with for me 2 incorrect YC's and a debatable YC on 4' for SPA handball (I'm not 100% certain it strikes the arm). To top it all off, 0 additional minutes which I could not believe. Fitness and positioning very strong but I do fear we are going to have a lot of cards by the end of 90 minutes.

DeleteThat performance from me sums up the depth of Scottish refereeing and the lack of suitable bodies to officiate the big fixtures. Unfortunately the performance was too much for MacDermid to handle. Wildly inconsistent with sanctions and overall detection was not quite at the top level of his peers. This was a game that certainly attracted YC's but 9 was far too excessive and quite frankly it was more luck than skill that we didn't finish with a complete disaster.
An unusually challenging game, though Rangers v Aberdeen does tend to lean that way. I actually thought very few of the cautions could be questioned, and the penalty was a stonewaller.

I thought 5 out of the 9 were mandatory, 2 supportable and 2 incorrect. Penalty correct and the disallowed goal frankly unbelievable.
DeleteI think there is a legitimate conversation to be had about who occupies the FIFA badges currently. I am wildly not convinced with several (Dickinson, Hardie and Lee) and Robertson had been reduced to nothing more than Walshs 4O. Nicholson and MacDermid are arguably the best out of a low bar certainly in comparison to previous lists.
Currently right now the list of referees you can trust to handle any game is for me as follows: Robertson, Walsh, Beaton, McLean and Clancy (to an extent) which is alarming, I know the newer referees have to be given these type of games for experience but unfortunately I am not convinced that inroads will be made.
Forgot to mention as well, personally I rate Robertson higher than Walsh and has been very unlucky not to progress higher up UEFA.

The future of Scottish refereeing lies in the hands of N.Walsh, D. Nicolson, M, MacDermid and D. Robertson. Collum has some difficulties ahead. Refs like Lee and Hardie could never handle an Edinburgh Derby?? Yet they’ve been FIFA for some time now. I honestly don’t know what to say!
DeleteI would concur in that assessment. The quantity of referees who officiate in the premiership have never been greater I suspect. The quality is completely lacking. No depth, incorrect succession planning, poor development, the list goes on and on. Some of It is Collum's making, some is on lack of investment from the SFA. There are a batch of younger referees working their way through the lower leagues currently and optimistically some have shown promise but need to be managed correctly so we don't have a repeat of previous failings.

I've seen some if not most of the "newer" cohort and for me I would agree on Stirling. Additionally for me: Hay, Kennedy, Hogarth, Wilkie have all looked competent and shown promise and those 6 could well be the future (hopefully)

DeleteI might be wrong, as I lack objectivity when it comes to Zwayer due to my dislike of his past bribery scandal.
ReplyDeleteHowever, whenever Zwayer makes major decisions—such as awarding penalties, issuing red cards, or overturning goals—he completely loses his composure and accuracy.
This is exactly what happened yesterday following the red card given to the Borussia player (which, in my opinion, was a mistake—not because of Zwayer, but due to VAR), after which about 8 out of 10 of his subsequent decisions were incorrect.
The red card is a supportable decision, frontal tackle, a very dangerous one. It's true that, and maybe that's your argument, the leg remains rather low but when there is the impact, it is a bit raised, you can still easily go for a red card if you think about a dangerous challenge, VAR can't intervene in such scenario.

It's interesting to note how the live sequence gives a completely different perception compared to the replay, especially in slow motion, where it looks like a yellow card and nothing more. But if you watch it live, making a challenge like that immediately comes across as dangerous and a clear red. For me, this foul is a classic example of pitch perception, something that unfortunately often gets sacrificed nowadays in the name of VAR, but remains an essential feeling for a referee.

It looks like there are two reasons to disallow the goal: an initial foul for a push, and then an offside.
DeleteIf offside then no reason for OFR but it seems to me referee's final decision was DFK for pushing. Quite unlucky. And also huge mistake of AR not to signal offside on the pitch. It was clear one.

To be fair for a long time in Scotland he wasn't trusted with top games. It was only replacing Collum in the league cup semi final which really pushed him on. For me he's the most consistent referee in Scotland

ReplyDeleteIn Italy, with Orsato, the VAR has been turned off.
Rosetti's statements were taken literally by the former international referee from Schio, who is now at the head of the Serie A and B referees. There hasn't been a single intervention after nearly two full matchdays (with only the second half of the ongoing Atalanta - Bologna game remaining).
However, one can hardly say that everything was perfect. A couple of calls were clearly missed, there was no reason not to award those penalties, but Orsato's message is clear: better to have such mistkes and to accept a no penalty than the contrary.
As active referee, you know, he hated VAR. He wants strong referees, like him, on the pitch.
Another interesting aspect is that, up to this point, he has assigned exclusively VAR PRO specialists to the video room, whereas Rocchi used to mix things up, frequently assigning on-field referees to sit behind the monitor. This is a logical choice: if there is a specialized roster of VAR PROs, which has now even increased in number, that is precisely what they should be doing. We shall see whether he will keep the things as they are when major mistakes occur, without changing his mind, and whether he continues to let the VAR PRO strictly fulfill their specialized role.
This approach, however, means that referees highly regarded at the UEFA level as VARs, such as Di Bello and Chiffi, among others, are no longer serving as VARs in Italy. It's a rather peculiar situation. Now those experienced names are serving as fourth officials, even if the role is unimportant for them in most of games.
Returning to the topic of penalties, under Rocchi management, things had honestly reached comical levels, and I have to admit that this current approach is better. Still, if it remains this strict, it won't work either, because clear errors must still be corrected, and they can't expect zero interventions for a long time.
In any case, we will see who breaks the ice first.
Meanwhile, in Serie B, we've already had the first interventions, though still not many considering the total number of matches.
Last thing I want to say, all referees assigned to all teams, Guida, Mariani some of them who didn't want to officiate Napoli and Lazio/Roma respectively, have been now assigned as fourth officials in those games, to be checked whether in future they could even be main referees for such clubs (more difficult, but let's wait and see).

Similar start in the PL imo. The only OFR (i think) in the first two matchdays was for violent conduct by Joao Gomes for kicking out at an opponent (Brighton vs Villa). Quite a few penalty appeals including Arsenal tonight vs Villa and Brentford vs Leeds yesterday where VAR hasn't got involved

DeleteI watched Atalanta - Bologna today and it's a European version of Ilgiz Tantashev. At least two mandatory cautions forgiven (35' borderline to SFP/VC step on heel by BOL #2, 46' reckless step on foot by BOL #10 in front of the fourth official).
The only YC issued after lack of prevention and reaction on blatant delaying the restart (already third case in the game a blatant DtR was not sanctioned).
Also, some shocking play-on calls through the whole game. Missed step on foot by attacker in 90+1' after which Bologna player had to be one minute off. The last-second goal after most likely missed foul on Atalanta player after which both teams almost stopped to play and his teammate took a desperate shot...
Sozza had already his debut one year ago in CL, but he can now get further maches in CL, he is coming from a poor season (however, regardless of that, Rocchi didn't care going on in appointing him even for big games but UEFA had the correct opinion, without pushing that much).

@Scandinavian Referee: I don't quite agree that they are the same as Doveri. for me Zufferli is quite an interesting referee, end of the season last year, he had a great level. Chiffi is also not a bad referee at all.
@M: the case of Maresca will remain a mystery to me. One of the top referees in Serie A, yet his career didn't do him justice.
