Good appointment for Cunha... Gassama with an important game which might effectively be the play-off for the 2nd place in the group... Marciniak with a par level game and Ricci with a game that may be important for qualification from the group!!
ReplyDeleteThis time Gassama immediately appointed, for sure a different management than WC 2014. We have big expectations. Also, waiting for the assistant referees, and we will know who has replaced Aden Marwa Range. I would bet on Abdelhak Etchiali, very experienced after the last edition in Brazil, but originally planned as reserve with Mehdi Charef.
ReplyDeleteVery good news for Gassama as there were some doubts about his fate after Range's removal. And now such an important and open match (might decide 2nd place and I don't see a favourite), rather surprising for me as I expected a big name like Irmatov there.
ReplyDeleteAn similarly important and open match for Ricci, but that could be expected.
Marciniak and Cunha having their debuts in matches, that have a clear favourite on paper, but of course still could be challenging. Sensible choices.
No referee from AFC and CONCACAF so far is however surprising as there were a few good options for those four matches.
With Marciniak handling Argentina-Iceland we have an early break of the (unwritten) confederation neutrality rule as expected by some readers due to the specific constellation with a long period of matches between European and non-European countries.
ReplyDeleteI have seen on FB, that Samba will be in Gassama's team on Saturday. But I did not find a reliable source for it.
ReplyDeleteHe trained with Birumushahu and Etchiali on 12 June!
DeleteWell, Phillip was correct... It seems Gassama has both the Senegalese ARs with him for Peru v Denmark and neither of Birumushahu or Etchiali... Waiting for confirmation!
DeleteWhat I saw, actually was AR1: Samba, AR2: Birumushashu
DeleteWhat I'm hearing lately is both Senegalese ARs will work with Gassama... Can't say for sure till FIFA confirms!!
DeleteWell, those Senegalese AR thing was definitely a rumour... Birumushahu and Etchiali confirmed as the ARs by FIFA in Team Gassama for Peru v Denmark!!
DeleteI got Ricci right, that will save me to be on the bottom of the predictions table :)
ReplyDeleteI'm yet to get a single prediction right 🙃
DeleteSoham me too... :)
DeleteWilmar Roldan is the 4th official to Szymon Marciniak... So both UEFA and CONMEBOL refs in a match between UEFA v CONMEBOL teams!
ReplyDeleteI'm yet to understand Marciniak's designation. There were so many options to avoid breaking Confederation neutrality. I mean, it's Day 3!!! Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the rule written that confederation neutrality cannot be broken?? There is no rule whatsoever like confederation neutrality definitely needs to be maintained or something like that!!
DeleteThe common sense rule is not written either and a competent referee must know it is the most important one in football. Maintaining the Confederation neutrality helps the national teams understand the criterion for the appointment, especially during group stage. In this case, there was a myriad of options to do so (MD3!!!), that's why Marciniak's designation doesn't add up at all. Make no mistake: I'm not leveling criticism at the Pole; Committee is to blame for the ridiculous decision.
DeleteI know many people in Australia will be disappointed when they find out an Uruguayan referee is on there game. After it was Australia who defeated Uruguay in 2005 to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. I myself am fine with it but I'm already anticipating what people will be saying.
ReplyDeleteIt is impossible for the Committee to sit and find out who knocked out whom years ago in the previous editions of the tournament and make appointment based on that... The thing you are saying was 13 years ago and there is no way that is even a consideration while making the appointment unless the assignor is a lunatic! It's just unnecessary to even consider who knocked out whom 15 years ago while making a referee appointment!
DeleteI agree with you. I'm just forewarning everyone that when the Australia fans find out they might react badly.
DeleteAny sensible fan wouldn't and shouldn't be bothered :)

Thank you Soham, some newspapers today here are still reporting that Samba from Senegal is assigned to Gassama.
DeleteVery poor communication by FIFA!
The news about Samba were rumours I think!
DeleteWhere do you get confirmation of the appointments as some of the appointments you are posting are live on this site before FIFA's website! Not complaining, happy to look here but I would have thought that FIFA would want to post them first for the whole world to see.
ReplyDeleteYou've to ask FIFA why they are always late :D
DeleteAlready third match for Astroza as AVAR2
ReplyDeleteThis can be a further signal that maybe Bascuñán is a reserve, so Astroza could work as VAR assistant referee in many games, also, offside-stuff so far without troubles in all matches.
DeleteGeiger as a main VAR seems strange to me. Don't get me wrong, I think that Geiger has a lot of experience as a VAR and will do well, but I do not really understand that a referee, who will get matches on the pitch, will work as a main VAR in a game. Especially if there is a compatriot like Gil, who could easily communicate with Marciniak and knows him even better. Same thing with Sampaio and Ricci. It would be better to appoint Sampaio for the role of VAR, wouldn't it? Sampaio and Orsato as well as Gil and Geiger could have been swapped easily. However, overall I like FIFA's compositions in the Video Operations Room.
ReplyDeleteAl-Jassim the only VAR so far without any appointment.
I think we can easily expect Al-Jassim being appointed for GER-MEX.
DeleteHas Gery Vargas been appointed yet?
DeleteAVAR3 in Argentina Iceland
DeleteGeiger is a train wreck on VAR.
DeleteHow can Hernan Maidana be AVAR2 in Croatia v Nigeria?? The match is in the same group as that of Argentina... It might not be too important but surely at that level you don't expect these type of slip-ups from FIFA
ReplyDeleteKnowing what happened at Olympics 2016, one could even say it's expected...
DeleteCHANGED!
DeleteAstroza and Maidana were swapped by FIFA. If they take such a long time to publish the appointments, it should be possible to don‘t make mistakes like this one...
ReplyDeleteMarrufo also removed from todays VAR apointments. Replaced with Tiago Lopes Martins
ReplyDeleteAre you sure? Tiago Lopes Martins was appointed for FRA-AUS anyway. So, in case of a replacement, there has to be someone else.
DeleteAh, right, I missed that. My fault. Gery Vargas will be AVAR in FRA-AUS. Lopes Martins will work as AVAR3. So, two matches for Gery Vargas within only a few hours. Weak management by FIFA, one must say that.
DeleteI guess that somebody from Russia inside FIFA is reading there :)
ReplyDeleteThere‘s a small mistake :-) AVAR1 will be Gery Vargas and AVAR2 Hernan Maidana. FIFA makes it very hard for us and especially for you. Thanks for your work!
DeleteTo be honest, I see that:
Deletehttps://s22.postimg.cc/7bidsrw5t/image.jpg
What a mess! FIFA media reports it the other way around... We‘ll see in a few minutes, I guess.
DeleteThe correct VAR appointments.
ReplyDeleteFrance - Australia: AVAR 1: Vargas (BOL) AVAR 2: Maidana (ARG) AVAR 3: Martins (POR)
Croatia - Nigeria: AVAR 2: Astroza (CHI)
Maidana is now reported as AVAR1 and VAR appointments for CRO - NGA and PER - DEN have disappeared.
DeleteA big mess. I think the same FIFA doesn't have clear ideas about the games to be played today...
Fifa media reports that Vargas will ve AVAR1 and Maidana AVAR2. The publsihed new appointments an hour ago
DeleteWas that Jair Marrufo? I cannot believe it...
ReplyDeleteThis is just a joke now
DeleteThey are clearly trying to confuse us. There‘s no way to explain such a mess differently...
DeleteIf i saw correctly VARs are Vigliano, Vargas, Maidana and Maruffo
ReplyDeleteMartins not Vargas
DeleteWilmar Roldan for Tunisia v England... Waiting for FIFA confirmation!
ReplyDeleteJanny Sikazwe for Belgium v Panama and Joel Aguilar for Sweden v South Korea appear to be the other appointments for Monday!
