2018 FIFA World Cup - Referee Appointments - Faghani and Ramos to kick off KO stage (Round of 16 - I) UPDATED WITH VAR

The first set of appointments for KO stage has been announced. Faghani and Ramos will offficiate France - Argentina and Uruguay - Portugal respectively.

    Faghani had Serbia v Brazil on 27 June (Wednesday) and now he will referee this huge France v Argentina game on 30 June (Saturday) so it's a very little time in between for rest and preparation... The main reason I think is that for the Brazil v Serbia match (held in Moscow), Faghani had no other additional travelling involved to and from the host city as they are staying in Moscow... In that way the appointment makes a lot of sense, a referee from neutral confederation than the two teams involved and of course in some excellent form Faghani is at the moment... I'm sure Faghani will be up to the task come Saturday in Kazan and in case of a good performance we may have the first AFC referee to whistle a World Cup Final! :)

      The time has come for an AFC crew to handle a World Cup Final. CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, CAF, and UEFA have all had the honor. It's time for the AFC to be bestowed with this grand honor.       Let‘s not forget that the match for 3rd place is often 'used' as a gift, too... But of course, Faghani is a strong candidate in case of a good performance.

      I have long maintained that FIFA should emulate UEFA and not have a 3rd place game. For the losing semi-finalist, it can't be very motivating to have to go and play another match that's not the Grand Final.

      France v Argentina performance will be very crucial for Faghani... It's a huge game and his display there will either make or break his chances of officiating a big SF or Final... Will be the most important match of his career till date!

    Excellent appointments for Faghani and Ramos. Based on their performances fully deserved. However I must say Ramos can easily struggle in this game.

    I am not fan of predictions, but if Faghani show a good performance, I also really believe he will be a strong candidate for the final, but at least for a semifinal. I am really impressed by his performances at this tournament. Also it will be interesting to see how he succeed in a decisive game involving Argentina and maybe compare to Irmatov.

      For Ramos it will be an indicator of how he performs under pressure in a big game and we will find out if he is a name for big things in the future! I remember Ramos had this exact game - Uruguay v Portugal in the 2017 U-20 World Cup in the QF stage and did very well there!

      I agree it would be very interesting to note Faghani's approach in this big game and how he deals with pressure applied by a big team like Argentina... The differences between his and Irmatov's approach, if any, would be excellent to analyse!

    Given the appointment, we can draw the conclusion that until yesterday in the evening, referee for France - Argentina was not still selected.
    This is how Collina works - performance principle for very big games - no matter that Faghani will get it after only three days.
    In case of good performance, he could go directly in the final.
    Ramos with an excellent achivement as well, he can be proud of having been assigned to a KO stage game.

      Serbia v Brazil being held in Moscow was the advantage as Faghani had no big travelling to do! In case of any other city this appointment would've been almost impossible!

      I don't think the appointment is totally undeserved... Ramos has always been quite a naturally talented referee who does well under pressure... He is very highly rated by FIFA, maybe even more than the likes of Aguilar! His performance in Brazil v Switzerland may not have been the most polished, but Poland v Colombia was very good... So he took his chances and opened up this opportunity for himself! I hope he does well on the day!

      Appointing Geiger would be tough... On Wednesday he does a game in Kazan and returns to Moscow on Thursday... If he was to referee this game on Saturday then he had to again leave for Sochi on Friday... Would be very little time for rest and preparation for the game, so Geiger wasn't really possible for the game and Ramos will suit the game too I think!

    Must be very rare for the "big hitters" from UEFA to be free from country involvement - Kuipers, Rocchi, Brych, and less so Cakir, Skomina. When was the last WC to be without at least one if Holland, italy and Germany in the last 16?

      It never happened before. Its the first time that the Germans are out after the group stage, they always reached minimum the round of 16.
