  1. Strange, that UEFA is not using Second Group referees in the decided group I. No need to have 2 referees there, who have CL matches this season.
Otherwise normal appointments, I think. The best games for Marciniak and Turpin, also in Oliver's match both teams still play for qualification.

    3. I don't think this will be important with all the seeding and pre-arrangement due to the host countries.

  2. I would like to re call an old comment posted on the “U17WC Referees” concerning Uefa referees at next UEFA 2020 Championship, sharing with you my ideas and thoughts.
I think that key point is to know how many referees, VAR and IV officials will be selected globally; Since we will have 36 matches in the group stage it could be likely that 18 referees will be in charge to main duty, so let me share my analysis assuming that only Elite ones will be chosen, Rocchi is leaving and nobody will be promoted (25 Elite)
According to recent appointments and performances I’m quite sure that following 13 ELITE will act as main referee: MATEU LAHOZ, DEL CERRO GRANDE, TURPIN, TAYLOR, KUIPERS, MAKKELIE, BRYCH, ZWAYER, ORSATO, SKOMINA, CAKIR, MARCINIAK, HATEGAN.
Watching at today’s appointment and to his strong grown in this season, I’m confident that SOARES DIAS will join the main team too.
I know that they are facing low fitness right now, but I’m expecting that, according to their previous “palmares” OLIVER AND COLLUM will also be part of the main squad.
In my opinion we have to stop here: so above 16 referees selected as main official
KASSAI: It has been one of the best referees in the world and personally I appreciated him so much. He was injured, he seems back, but I’m quite sure that it will not enough to recover his position and the trust of the committee and gain the place, because latest performances and appointments have been quite negative. I also guess that if names will be released in December, Rosetti cannot appoint an official who doesn’t have any Cl or EL match this season.
BASTIEN and KARASEV: Imo similar to Kassai, or a little bit better but I don’t think that they have reached a level to be selected for Uefa Euro 2020. Bastien better than Kassai and Karasev so 1st of the excluded.
AYTEKIN, SIDIROPOLOUS, KRALOVEC, KALBAKOV, KRUZILIAK: Unexperienced due to recent promotion or injured or low performances will relegate them out of rule
GIL MANZANO: Mateu and Del Cerro are clearly ahead of him.
On other hand I think that could fair, wired and useful to grant experience of all elite referees, so in place of Rosseti, I would appoint GIL MANZANO, AYTEKIN, BASTIEN and KASSAI AS VAR and KRALOVEC, SIDIROPOULUS, KARASEV, KULBAKOV AND KRUZILIAK as FOURTH OFFICIAL of course in addition to someone form 1st group or experienced VARs
So finally my list would be:
MAIN REFEREES (16): MATEU LAHOZ, DEL CERRO GRANDE, TURPIN, TAYLOR, KUIPERS, MAKKELIE, BRYCH, ZWAYER, ORSATO, SKOMINA, CAKIR, MARCINIAK, HATEGAN, SOARES DIAS, OLIVER AND COLLUM
VARs (9): GIL MANZANO, AYTEKIN, BASTIEN, KASSAI, IRRATI, GIL, VAN BOECKEL, ATTWELL, BUQUET
FOURTH OFFICIAL (9): KRALOVEC, SIDIROPOULUS, KARASEV, KULBAKOV, KRUZILIAK, TREIMANIS, JOVANOVIC, KOVACS, VINCIC
I’m really open to have Female referees, they can act as VAR or Fourth Officials
Does it make sense for you this list ? Do you know how many will be globally assigned ?

    1. Very good analysis. I would add to your list of main referees Sidiropoulos and Kulbakov or Kruzliak. I prefer Kassai, but he has been injured.

      Delete
    2. I basically agree about the 16 referees, biggest questionmark behind Collum. But as there are not so many alternatives, experience could decide for him. The next two candidates are Sidiropoulos and Karasev IMO, who should however be tested further until the selection. Kulbakov or Kruzliak could slip in, if any of the previously mentioned can't convince. Kralovec and Kassai are probably out due to recent performances and overall performances and appointments in the last years.

About VAR, I assume, we won't see e.g. Aytekin, Bastien and Kassai in that role, but mostly "specialized" VARs. I would therefore add at least Dankert, Kamphuis, Hernandez to your list.
Will also be interesting, who will act as AVARs. Some referees from the VAR list or will there be a specific list? Maybe fixed duos like at the U21 EURO? Mostly specialised ARs? Will referees from the main list also act as VAR/AVAR?

About 4th officials: Last time, there were only two extra 4th officials at the tournament. So I think, 9 is far too much.

  3. Good game for Marciniak and Turpin

  4. OFF TOPIC: Do you know the full list for FIFA Club WC?

  5. UEFA seems to have little trust in their second or third category refs. Qualifiers - even completely decided qualifiers or matches between teams that are out - are only available to a chosen number of refs. I remember times where matches like KAZ - SMR went to referees from the Faroe Islands....

Disappointing, also for referees like Peljto or Dabanović. RUS - BEL would have been a real test for both of them and also a nice reward.

As for the rest, looking at the big picture, Marciniak and Oliver get games that are quite important, but qualification for NED and AUT is almost secured based on the schedule. The biggest and most important match-up is Turpin's. All the best, it will be a huge test.

  6. Please find below some of the most interesting incidents from Italy - Malta, 2021 UEFA Women's EURO Qualifiers, played on 12 November 2019.
    Referee: Eleni Antoniou (GRE)
Assistant referees: Chrysoula Kourompylia (GRE), Sofia Athanasopoulou (GRE)
    Fourth official: Anastasia Mylopoulou (GRE)

    7' YC for blatant holding
    https://streamable.com/375es
Definitely a correct decision by referee.

    18' Offside AR1
    https://streamable.com/la316
Three players in offside but the one who got the ball was clearly ONSIDE. Significant mistake there, however situation was not easy as she had many players to assess.

25' YC for reckless use of arm
    https://streamable.com/50q6d
Looks like a very harsh if not wrong decision. There isn't the best replay possible (frontal view on the face of opponent), but I tend to think this was not reckless.

26' Free kick leading to goal
    https://streamable.com/51td7
Maybe soft but of course never a wrong decision. Supportable by referee. Two-handed push from behind can give a different idea but in my opinion effects were not that relevant.

30' Possible YC for reckless challenge / persistent infringment
    https://streamable.com/p3pzc
Not the first foul made by Maltese player in the game, I think that in this case she should have got YC.

    38' Reckless or SFP?
    https://streamable.com/vnecy
In the opinion of referee, this was not foul, I guess because Maltese player hit ball before opponent. To be honest, this is something close to SFP. YC for reckless is the minimum there. Clear mistake, very dangerous challenge.

    47' Interesting offside situation.
    https://streamable.com/rf1sq
Correct decision by AR2? I think wrong. Attacker who played ball was not in offside, one can guess AR2 raised for the involvement of the other attacker, but in my opinion she was not punishable. I think mistake there. NO FLAG would have been excellent.

71' Second YC for leaving the pitch without referee's permission.
    https://streamable.com/ltvjr
I think we can definitely consider this as poor management by referee. After an injury of the player involved, she went to talk with her. Then, player left pitch for medical treatment, but it seems as this happened without referee's permission. Second YC and RC. I think this could have been avoided with better communication. According to LotG of course it is correct, but...

84' Penalty appeal by Italy for an alleged deliberate hanbdall following a corner kick.
    https://streamable.com/dcwiy
Correct by referee to play on, nothing there.

Not good impression in the big picture. Most significant mistake was in my opinion missed foul in 38', this was very dangerous and endangered player's safety.
Overall, disciplinary control was not the best as well in what we can call for sure an easy-going game.
Both assistant referees with some things to be reviewed, however some good offside call by AR1 must also be mentioned. AR2 less challenged.

      Delete
    3. Got it. Thank you.

Why do people assume she will make the jump from the Super Cup and U21 qualifiers to EURO 2020? I don't understand even the public relations benefit of making her a fourth official--it's not like she'd be in a position to showcase her performance. When one gets broad attention as a fourth official, it's only negative.

Unless you are giving her a whistle, there is no point. And there's no justification whatsoever for making her a referee at EURO 2020.

Maybe Rosetti will do it. But it's a really bad idea in my opinion. Much different than the way Umpierrez or Steinhaus were used at the U17s.

  14. I'm not watching the game but Lechner just missed a RC for SFP (even VC?) to CYP No.8; studs attack on opponent's knee whilst not trying to play the ball - such contacts on the knee especially are very dangerous to player's safety. Only YC was issued. 57' (ish?)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I thought similar live, but missed the replay, and I'm not 100% sure as to how much contact there was with the leg, as my second thinking was that it was a glancing strike.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I didn't realise that a foul had been whistled about five seconds earlier! Crystal clear Violent Conduct, and Lecher booked the afflicted SCO player too who did nothing wrong (as far as I can see).

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd suggest that the SCO player (Taylor) was booked for delaying the restart there (it was to be a CYP free kick) as he booted the ball up field.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That might be why then ;)

How was Lechner in general in this game?

    ReplyDelete
  19. => 57' YC for DtR (SCO No.3); YC for UB (CYP No.8) - did CYP No.8 committ a Violent Conduct?

    https://streamable.com/5hr9h

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ouch. Moment of truth at 35s. Bottom of boot into side of knee.

Lechner (and team) had some weaker moments, some very sensible refereeing moments (there was an incident where a SCO player was pushed into the CYP GK by a CYP defender, and the play sanctioned with a DFK for CYP), but as Ref545 mentioned, there were a number of confusing CK/GK decisions, especially in the first half of the match.

(I wasn't 100% focused on the game unfortunately)

    ReplyDelete
  21. For my taste very bad performance from Radu Petrescu in first half. He missed lot of fouls (!?), allowed lot of holding and pulling from Latvian players without issuing YCs. No prevention at all. All of that in very easy match, without crucial situation.

  25. Incredible mistake from Gestranius. He whistled indirect free kick for Poland because Israel player returned the ball to his GK, but one Polish player played the ball before GK did. It was very obvious, both Gestranius and his AR2 had to see that.

    6. if he didn't touch the ball it was a goal... in the last moment he saw the ball and the move of his elbow was deliberate just to stop the ball. Extremely difficult decision but we cannot say it was crucial mistake

    8. I also think, it is supportable. The position of the arm is not really natural, increasing the body surface and the arm seems to be tense.

    11. No need for such irritation. Your own words: “if he didn't touch the ball it was a goal”. Then if you consider the handball as punishable in your opinion the Dutch defender denies the Northern Irish opponent a goal, which according to the LOTG has to be punished with a red card. A yellow card was given, so that would mean a crucial mistake.
Instead of lecturing me it would be better to use substantive arguments supporting your opinion.

  36. Offside position almost doesn't matter. The alleged foul occurs before the ball arrives and before the attacker is challenging for the ball. If Marciniak had a foul on the defender, that should take precedence over the offside decision--whether correct or incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Does anyone have info as to whether or not UEFA will use VAR for the playoffs? On the one hand, given the stakes it seems like the right move. On the other, there may be logistical difficulties in places like Georgia and North Macedonia.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @usaref -- in this instance, the offside position CLEARLY matters. The offence by the NIR player is happening as the ball arrives. By the Laws therefore, this is an offside offence.
