  1. Based on the observer, I can not think of any other name than Anthony Taylor in Paris.

    3. It is a replacement, however I think there aren't problems in that, given also the role of Dallas :)

    4. Ok:)
So, Taylor can be a candidate for the one of the finals ?

    5. Taylor is not candidate.

    6. Seems like my statement that even Italian observers will be replaced, not only referees, is true.
OT: Fabio Verissimo replaces Bastian Dankert in Youth League match Juventus-Real. Maybe Brych in Europa League?

    7. Dankert has a domestic match today. So he was unlikely to take the YL match anyway.

    8. I forgot to check domestic appointments. Thank Philipp S for the info :)

  2. Both referees had both teams in the group stage.
But otherwise suitable appointments, confirming once again that Makkelie and Taylor have arrived at the very top of UEFA refereeing (and therefore are final candidates IMO).

  3. Both are sensible appointments.

  4. People are still on the Taylor train but I urge you too watch his last 5 big matches in Premier League and Europe. There are mistakes in most of them, with the European games being corrected with the help of VAR.

  5. Easy to lose sight of it, but what a CL KO stage debut for Taylor! I can't remember a better one than that.

  6. Interested situation for Taylor but nice for Makkelie

  10. A video has became viral of a match in the 3rd Portuguese League (Toreense vs Anadia), where the referee Luís Reforço invented a penalty for the for the home team at the score of 0-1, and gave the away team a straight red card. Then the penalty was taken 3 times, until the Toreense player scored, as the first two penalties were missed by their player. The match ended 2-1 for the home team, Anadia ending the game in 9 players.

Any Portuguese readers can offer us some insights over Luís Reforço? Records show he was a ref in Primeira Liga between 2007-2010.

  12. The situation is becoming very worrying in Italy.
All sports have been stopped until further notice (very likely 3 April, but this date could be extended).
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has extended restrictions to whole country. People not allowed to travel if not for very extra-ordinary reasons. This will last for a quite long time. I don't know how it will be possible to play Europa League game on Thursday Inter - Getafe and I'm really curious about appointment.
FC Internazionale already announced to withdraw from Youth League, game against Rennes planned for Wednesday has been annulled, Rennes will win 3-0 by walkover.
Let's see how UEFA will manage this emergency. Given also that something is happening also in other European countries, the close future is not so much reassuring.

    1. It will be intresting to see how will this affect Champions and Europa league matches involving Italian teams.
Italian match officilas appointments have been canceled, now the first match was canceled (I really hope UEFA will show emphaty and not punish Inter for withdrawal from Youth League despite the regulation say so).
Tomorrow will be interesting day when we may found out what will happened with all those matches involving Italian teams.

    1. Yep, same issue I have with him. But so far, he has control.

  20. Difficult task for Makkelie to keep control while being so often crowded by players but he was top level in the first half!

    ReplyDelete
  21. he's got the match in hand, for now the players are playing and not making fun of him. Good job Makke

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I counted right, three time Atletico's players crowded Makkelie requesting yellow card, all three times he did not show yellow card, all three time correct IMO. I am fascinated by his level of self control and calmness in those situations, I am sure some other referees would fall under the pressure and would show those cards.
Now that Liverpool scored, second half will probably be more difficult, both teams will now want to score the goal and I think we will see some cards in second half.
But as Anonymous said top level in the first hal

    1. Quite harsh for me but not wrong. A (light) push of which Neymar made the most out of it.

    2. Correct? Any detailed info about this game?

    3. Red Card is harsh . But for me is yellow card because of light push

    4. No problems at all for Taylor. Without any fans there is no hot atmosphere logically. Quite remarkable that there was this small fight which resulted in the red card. Nobody expected that after a calm game

  24. Excellent call by AR2 in the last second of the game in Liverpool! Very crucial. Now extra time will be played.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Terrible management by Taylor. I haven't seen such a passive approach in a mass confrontation since a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What a decission to overrule that goal of Atletico in 93rd minute. Great decission by Steegstra confirmed by VAR.
I must say that I would never guess that any referee would be able to control this match for 90 minutes without single yellow card.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It was a very obvious offside but good call.
Feel sorry for Makkelie for having extra time cause that was just perfect 92 mins, and unbelievable to handle this game so far without cards and still with such a big authority. I am simply amazed by him.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I fully agree, let's see whether he will manage extra time without cards as well, very difficult, but not impossible.
Game is now very open with the goal scored by Atlético.
The call by AR2 in 92' was not extremely difficult, right, but the momentum of the decision was very crucial here. Must be underlined. AR2 was alert until the last second of game.
As long as VAR is not needed and nobody talks about referee, it is a big success.

      Delete
    2. Definitely it was a huge call under huge pressure, but expected one.
Very well done by the team so far. I know many times it was written here, but in the Netherlands they really develop extremely talented refs.

  29. Perfect Makkelie whole 120mints. Every decision was right. Maybe 2 missed YCs but that was tactical choice. 3 correct YCs, 2 for confrotation and 1 for SPA. Soon big final for him !

  33. Makkelie has had the best performance of his life. Should he be thought about for the final???

    ReplyDelete
  34. Extraordinary performance of Makkelie. He is contender for Cl final for me before Mateu. What an authority, what an decision maker. Great!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wait, for CL there are Orsato and Mateu before him

      Delete
    2. Mateu in el clasico was also brilliant.

Anyway, I am happy that we moved forward from Cakir, Brych and Kuipers. Also Turpin and Hategan are top class at the moment.

      Delete
  35. Makkelie won thank to the way he handled the first half. He unnecessarily wanted to keep the cards in his pocket at all cost at the end of second half and during the extra time but the control gained in the first half was always there. Players respected him all the time and he wasn't eaten by them what could have been a case quite early if other referee was in charge.

Well, if the choice is merithoric one, Makkelie should get a CL final immediately after this performance but following UEFA's pattern last years, he can get the EL final. He deserves any final for sure.

  36. For sure, the red card against BVB was no case for VAR, but it was a mistake and should have been avoided - simply no VC.

    1. Agreed. I still don't understand what the red card was for? A push that was reckless at most??

      Delete
  37. Two contrasting performances tonight. Makkelie with a superb performance that was all class. Full control from start to finish in a hot atmosphere with a packed stadium. Atletico are known to be a team that is difficult for referees and he went the first 90 minutes without needing a yellow card. Compare that to Taylor where there is an empty stadium with no crowd pressure where the game is pretty much done. But still has a melee which was managed pretty bad with the referee very passive and a red card. I'm still not quite sure what the red is for. Did he give 2 yellows or did he deem a reckless push to be violent conduct?? Would like to know what was put on the match report.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I write this as a disappointed Liverpool fan.

Absolute masterclass from Makkelie. The contrast between this performance and Marciniak in the first leg was staggering. I would call it faultless and he has to be among the favourites for the big final in May.

    1. Agree with you as Liverpool support too...

  39. Just checked the RC by Taylor, surely wrong according to last UEFA guidelines in recent RAPs, but not 100% wrong by LotG. Indeed, correct decision by VAR to support. It can be seen a violent conduct in the "old" meaning of the term, but nowadays we know the new trend.
Also, very passive approach, it looked like he didn't realize what was about to happen. I don't know about the rest of the game, but given that there weren't almost comments on the blog, it was an expected level more or less...

    1. Yes, expected level. No real difficulties.

    2. Taylor missed a Second Yellow Card (striking) for DOR no.17, 43'.

I think DOR no.27 was sent off for holding the throat an opponent in the big confrontation - we don't really get an insight into what happened in that 'mêlée' though as the camera pans and no replays are shown. I agree with Chefren in his analysis of the push: Taylor was reaching for a Yellow Card after that.

If anyone with information from inside UEFA could communicate why Taylor issued a Red Card, that would be interesting :)

I disagree that Taylor was very passive in that scene. The mass confrontation was one of the most aggressive I have seen at a UEFA level for a long time - you cannot expect Taylor to act as a 'bouncer' and pull players away. This 'passive' approach is the modus operandi for confrontations in England (unlike, eg., Scotland). I don't think you can ask more of the match officials here than to be in a good position to perceive any offences and then punish them after the players have returned to calm.
