UEFA postpones EURO 2020 by 12 months

Priority given to completing domestic competitions in an unprecedented solidarity move by UEFA. Working group set up to examine possibilities for this season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions.

UEFA today announced the postponement of its flagship national team competition, UEFA EURO 2020, due to be played in June and July this year. The health of all those involved in the game is the priority, as well as to avoid placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services involved in staging matches. The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, to be completed.

All UEFA competitions and matches (including friendlies) for clubs and national teams for both men and women have been put on hold until further notice. The UEFA EURO 2020 Play-off matches and international friendlies, scheduled for the end of March, will now be played in the international window at the start of June, subject to a review of the situation.

A working group has been set up with the participation of leagues and club representatives to examine calendar solutions that would allow for the completion of the current season and any other consequence of the decisions made today.

The decisions, taken by UEFA’s Executive Committee, followed videoconference meetings held today with the Presidents and General Secretaries of the 55 national associations, as well as representatives of the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPro Europe, convened by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, to find a coherent plan to break the logjam of fixtures building up due to the spread of the virus across the continent.

Announcing the decisions, Aleksander Čeferin said:

“We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent. It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.

“The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, UEFA tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football. There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result.

“It was important that, as the governing body of European football, UEFA led the process and made the biggest sacrifice. Moving EURO 2020 comes at a huge cost for UEFA but we will do our best to ensure that the vital funding for grassroots, women’s football and the development of the game in our 55 countries is not affected. Purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole.

“Football is an uplifting and powerful force in society. The thought of celebrating a pan-European festival of football in empty stadia, with deserted fan zones while the continent sits at home in isolation, is a joyless one and one we could not accept to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition.

“I would like to thank the European Club Association, the European Leagues and FIFPro Europe for their great work today and for their cooperation. I would also like to thank from the bottom of my heart the 55 national associations, their Presidents and General Secretaries, and my colleagues from the Executive Committee for their support and wise decisions. The fine detail will be worked out in the coming weeks but the basic principles have been agreed and that is a major step forward. We have all shown that we are responsible leaders. We have demonstrated solidarity and unity. Purpose over profit. We’ve achieved this today.

“I would also like to thank Alejandro Dominguez and CONMEBOL, who have agreed to move CONMEBOL’s 2020 Copa America in order to follow the recommendations issued by the international public health organisations to enact extreme measures and as a result of EURO 2020 being postponed. This means that clubs and leagues in Europe will have as little disruption as possible in the availability of their players. These joint efforts and especially this coordinated and responsible decision, are deeply appreciated by the whole European football community.

“I would like to thank FIFA and its President, Gianni Infantino, who has indicated it will do whatever is required to make this new calendar work. In the face of this crisis, football has shown its best side with openness, solidarity and tolerance.”

UEFA EURO 2020 was scheduled to take place in twelve cities across Europe from 12 June to 12 July 2020. The proposed new dates are 11 June - 11 July 2021. UEFA would like to reassure existing ticket buyers and hospitality clients that if they cannot attend the tournament in 2021, the face value of their tickets and packages will be refunded in full. Within the next month, further information on the refund process will be communicated to existing ticket buyers via e-mail and on euro2020.com/tickets.

Decisions on dates for other UEFA competitions, whether club or national team for men or women, will be taken and announced in due course.

  1. Seems a sensible decision. Unfortunately but if they'd delayed just a few months there'd be no guarantee the situation would be resolved. Hopefully everyone is well and it all clears up as soon as possible.

Purely from a refereeing perspective, I guess the year delay might shift things a bit in terms of who is considered - perhaps the likes of Brych and Kuipers will have stopped refereeing at international level by then? It will be a year closer to 2022 too so perhaps some of those considered for the WC will have a better chance.

  2. So, among the referees who would have attended tournament this season, the most interesting situation for sure is about Kuipers. He had planned to retire after EURO, as very last step of his career. Will he continue until June 2021? At that time he will be 48 years old. Very difficult to think that, I think he will have to give up. At the same time, this delay will help UEFA in finding more alternatives and maybe some names will gain more trust by committee.
About the other referees, mentioned yesterday in another post, I think Orsato, Cakir and Skomina shouldn't have troubles in being there, very likely for some of them it will be the final act of their careers.
But another situation to analyze is Brych's one: I think that he was planned for leaving the list on December 2020, now he should be confirmed to attend tournament. I remember that German officials have been always removed from FIFA after having turned 45, Brych will reach that on next August.
As for the rest, all the other referees are still "young", no problems for them.

    1. What about Mateu Lahoz? If he is not the WC2022 candidate, does Spain really want him at EURO 2021 instead of Cerro Grande? Or will Spain push for both to attend?

      Delete
    2. In my opinion it was already sure that at EURO 2020 we would have had both, Mateu and del Cerro. No problems for 2021 as well, 2020-21 will be last season for del Cerro, but now Spain will also abolish age limits...

      Delete
    3. I assume, that Brych could stay on the FIFA list for one more year, if he wants to (and he passes the fitness tests). Yes, he would be the first, but he is also the first sensible candidate for that in Germany since the age limits were abolished.

      Delete
    4. Because Zwayer is within the list of WC candidates, I would not exclude that he will take the priority respect to Brych and will be selected also for Euro 2021, which will be just one year before Wc. I think that the most likely solution will be 2 germans (Brych and Zwayer) like as for Spain and England.

  3. Apollon Lemesoú - APOEL Lefkosías
    Fábio José Costa Veríssimo

    8’ Penalty (handling) to Apollon?
62’ Penalty (tripping) given to APOEL

Overall: well-refereed moderately challenging game; quite giving foul detection threw the players a bit early on, but in a mostly football-focused game they appreciated the scope to play; only two missed fouls (41’, 78’) missed all match; verbal warning given for LoR foul at 3’, same player commits a borderline SPA, referee takes the opportunity to open the cards at 14’; disciplinary control and verbal / physical prevention revealed a high-level of smartness – well done, I was really impressed by that; not the most charismatic leadership style on the pitch (neither manager or firm distance, closer to the latter), but good soft skills presented; good fitness / movement, not more though -> (very) good performance, well done.

    3. 36' Looks like SFP to me - but impossible to tell without replays. In any case the offending player had to be dismissed from the field of play having already been cautioned, and was.

50' Correct SYC for dissent by action.

71' Potential DOGSO scene, but I agree with the referee that it was only SPA - correct SYC.

80' Referee lacked courage in this scene - unlike 50', kicking the ball away had no dissent or (ostensibly) any DtR intention. He should have been firm enough to not issue a SYC here, but he gave in to balancing pressure. Crucial mistake.

Let me add that I didn't appreciate Sievascjanik's card showing procedure in each scene.

      Thanks Vadim for reporting that!

      Delete
    4. Last situation is a very clear crucial mistake. You can never issue a YC for that. All the other decisions are correct or at least supportable (maybe some straight reds possible as well but not 100% clear ones). Also, I fully agree with Mikael, terrible body language while issuing card, referee looks totally uninterested in what he is doing and he shows cards without firmness, like a very formal act and nothing more. This is very often a secondry aspect, but in this case it happens too many times and it is more than evident. It sounds as very weak message to players.

    Amin Kurhchieli

72’ 2-3* disallowed by Andrey Getikov, very complex offside (goalkeeper out; save vs. deliberate play?)
78’ Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play, BATE no.25? Yellow Card given
c.FT Attacks by Dynama coach on Andrey Getikov (physical contact?) after the final whistle; no disciplinary sanction

Overall: simply amazing fitness, great positioning; three yellow cards missed: 4’ striking (to give a card here would inflame the game, but a talk with the offending player that involved hugging him was not okay – strong warning at least needed), 29’ reckless (referee reached for card, then declined to show it), 56’ standing leg (nobody expected a foul; clear standing tackle though); a further potential-SFP incident (75’) but no conclusive evidence; referee could have helped AR2 a HUGE amount in avoiding latter conflicts by visibly going over to talk to him for (correctly) disallowed goal at 72’ – by not doing that, he made AR2 look like an ‘idiot’ to non-refereeing people; overall good foul detection inc. some mistakes; no softer skills presented but no lacks shown either, maybe besides in the scene after FT; a bit insecure impression vis-á-vis decision making -> satisfactory performance, I wouldn’t assess Kurhchieli as a talent for UEFA level.

    1. Simply unbelievable how calmly he tolerated dissent by Dynama's coach after the final whistle...

    2. Disgraceful that they didn't red card the manager. How can they allow him to talk and attack like that. A shame for all referees.

    3. I agree - it was terrible that Kurhchieli did not protect his AR either from the mobbing at 72' or the very aggressive attacks from the Dynama coach after fulltime (he should get a long suspension for that).

Given the lack of protection from his boss, I thought Andrey Getikov - who should be praised for taking a brilliant decision at 72' - dealt with both scenes rather well on a personality level (showing more charisma than Kurhchieli himself did, one could argue...).

According to this article, Kuipers will decide on next autumn whether to continue until 2021 for EURO. He would like to do so, but he admits that he will need full support by KNVB first and then UEFA for that.
Also, the confirmation that he wanted to quite after WC 2018 but he was asked by UEFA to continue for EURO. The same was for Mazic, according to many reports I got, but the Serbian made a different choice.

  14. Why did Rocchi end carrer? The same situation for Kuipers ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In normal conditions, Rocchi would have had to stop his career, according to AIA rules, at the end of 2018-19, season in which he turned 45. But he got a derogation for officiating in 2019-20 season. Basically, this should mean FIFA referee for another year, so 2019. After that, confirming him on FIFA list for 2020 would have meant to keep him only for 6 months because after that he should have retired from serie A. It was possible to give a second derogation, but AIA took a different decision.
In the Nehterlands they are not so strict with age rules so you can easily understand the difference between the cases.
However, nowadays we can say that this was a very lucky choice: with EURO 2020 postponed to 2021, Rocchi would have benefited of a further year on FIFA list (or 6 months) without the chance to attend the tournament. For sure he could have reached Champions League final and other great games, but he already got enough in his career under all the points of view if you ask me, and this was the main reason behind AIA's choice not to give a second derogation.

      Delete
    2. The same argument is valid for Kuipers: he already got enough in his career. His international career should stop after this season.
I understand that someone like Orsato, who didn't attend a final tournament, can whistle next year at EURO 2021, but not someone like Kuipers (who has 4 final tournaments in his palmares). On the other, to select Orsato for WC 2022 (in december 2022), at 47 years old, is a very discutable decision (unfair if we think that, in last decade, many good referees had to retire at 45 yeras old, for example De Bleckeere, Velasco Carballo, Stark etc.). It's not our fault that Italy doesn't have top referees at this moment (except Orsato, who is born in 1975).

    3. Actually I disagree. Costa initiates the contact and goes down quite deliberately - therefore no penalty for me.

Also the 1-3 should not count because of a foul by van Persie - the arm cleary moves towards Casillas.

Therefore IMO not a good start by the Italian. I don't think, he should achieve much during this tournament. ;)

I admit that I am not sure in both cases, whether it would be clear and obvious enough for VAR.

That means that the Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City game being played right now is the last game to be played out of any sport in Australia until this whole Covid-19 situation is resolved.
I'm sorry Mikael W but they did not post the appointments for the game. I can only say that the referee is Ben Abraham.

Hard to really say on the 2YC. Seems a bit unnecessary. I can buy careless instead of reckless, based on the video we have available.

  20. Dutch football season ended tonight, by the goverment forbidding all public events where people come toghether until the first of June this year. There is no limit of people so everywhere two people come together is allready to much.

This means that no football match can be played, since there are more than two players needed. The KNVB will meet all the the clubs from the ere and eerste divisie tomorrow and take some difficult decisions. Most certainly there will be no champion this year. This will be for the first time since the season of 1944/45. What will happen with promotion and relegation is a biq question at the moment aswell as the teams that will go into the European competitions.

    1. Very important update, thanks. This decision seems to be at moment against the will by UEFA to allow the end of national leagues after having postponed EURO 2020. However, without Dutch teams in European cups, we can say that this doesn't still directly affect UEFA. But I wonder what would happen in case of similar decision by a country with a club still in contention in European cups? It is very difficult to predict the future, I really don't know what is about to happen. If UEFA wants to give priority to domestic leagues, according to last news, and to finish everything before 30 June, crucial choices are expected to be taken soon.
Having said that, about Italy at moment all club agree that they want to play the remaining 12 matchdays of serie A, they are even willing to play until July, if needed, with less time before new season. But at moment it is definitely impossible to make any single guess.

    2. In the meantime the government has come with additional information and this makes things more fuzzy. The info I posted on monday was only for the events where a permission from the mayor is needed.

Sports, education, culture etc are excluded from this rule. So officially the soccer season can still restart from the 6th of April. But that is the info of today. Tomorrow it can be different. The KNVB is looking at 3 different scenarios but they have a lot of questions as anybody else.

      1. Season will be finished before June 30 (without fans in the stadium)
      2. Season will be finished after June 30.
      3. The season is finished and no matches will be played.

      To be continued..

  25. Anorthosis Ammochóstou - AEL Lemesoú
    Nejc Kajtazović

77’ Freekick to AEL (holding); Second Yellow Card (dissent), ANO no.11?

Overall: quite challenging match with some potential to ‘explode’, which referee managed to keep control of; no problems with disciplinary control; besides very good feeling to issue a warning after a borderline careless-reckless foul at 47’, lacking in prevention, referee couldn’t really calm the game down; lazy, even unmotivated at times, impression; warnings issued but referee didn’t connect with the players, and didn’t seem really interested to do that; very good movement, athlete style, but only good positioning; ‘crossed’ with AR2 David Gabrovec at a throw-in; no enlargement of additional time despite Anorthosis scoring during it -> referee managed to bear this game, not so much thanks to himself though; handling a hotter game than this in the same way would end up in a big mess.

  26. Serdar Gözübüyük gave a interview to former player Andy van der Meyde in his youtube show "in the car with Andy". In this video he stated that reaching the level he is now on wasn't easy. There where a lot of challenges to be faced.

Mainly the public opinion created over Serdar had a lot of impact on himself and his family. Most interesting thing is that he mentioned that one still active referee was one of the biggest critics. He isn't telling who is talking about, but hints "this referee ìs doing a great job as a referee, but he's almost wearing high heels and is close to using botox." "I'm writing a book and then I will tell my complete story with all the details and names. This will be a shock for a lot of people."

It is unknown when the book will be published.

I just watched the Viciebsk - Haradzieja game handled by Anton Lašuk and was quite impressed with his law-enforcer style, admittedly hard to assess his performance in a game without replays. He is twenty-seven and has been fourth official for some UYL games, and if I'm not wrong has been promoted for this season - is he a name to watch out for in the future at a UEFA level?

    2. So can anybody tell me what was the final grade for Clatts in that match and is there any offiical statement about that?

      Delete
    3. UEFA don't release marks, so the official mark is unknown. This is how I remember CL Final 2016 (this is being purely subjective): taking account the high match difficulty, the high intensity of the game, Clattenburg's excellent disciplinary control (one can argue about a potential RC for Ramos at around 90+3', reckless vs. SFP), a correct penalty whistled, excellent game and player management (the way he managed Pepe is absolutely legendary: at first he gave him the look of a thousand deaths, and secondly the famous "lizard tongue"), I would assess his performance around 8,7-8,8 (that's not an official mark, but only my humble opinion what his mark should have been). Yes, Simon Beck made a crucial mistake by allowing Real's first goal, but Clattenburg himself was simply masterclass and his performance in that final remains one of the best pieces of refereeing that I have seen in recent years.

      Delete
    4. Thank you!!! My opinion is that Euro 2016 also refereed by Clatss was masterclass!!!! But nobody as Heber Lopez at Copa America final in the same year!!!

  37. Thank you Pedro Irmatov for all these clips! I offer my view

1 – Foul by Blue no.3 is borderline careless/reckless but to evaluate it as reckless seems wise; violent conduct by Blue no.3, should be a RC not SYC; gestures / mimics dealing with the benches were inflammatory and arrogant – if he ejects the coach he should issue a RC

2 – Hard to assess without replays but high force did indeed look like SFP by Red no.4; considering Red no.26 infringes referee’s personal space he could have been sent off too, YC is probably okay in the end, good that referee punished it at all; I guess referee lost the face of the player he sent off momentarily: why he didn’t back up or face the heavy dissent more firmly; he was the ‘loser’ of the talk with Red no.21 – more firmness / empathy needed there?

3 – Very dangerous tackle, (even) UEFA are trying to outlaw these high force scissor tackles: SFP for me.

4 – Wild tackle, only intention is to hurt his opponent: SFP

5 – Very clear handling by White player that referee cannot see (AR1? Is there an FO?) who then tries to kick his opponent – it seems fairly likely that a dangerous tackle would then come, referee had some chances to prevent that with a whistle (hard though when attacker still has the ball); high force, straight leg: SFP.

6 – Yellow player lost control of his body, in UEFA that’s probably a YC nowadays but I agree with the referee: SFP; it seems the referee forgot about the injured player though.

7 – Very odd tackle by the Blue/Yellow player, high hitting point: SFP. Good that the referee didn’t want other Blue/Yellow players to impede on the stricken player, but he should refrain from pushing them.

8 – Very good awareness, easy to miss such a random violent act: VC.

9 – Impossible to discern, referee should be backed.

10 – Correct freekick; terrible lack of awareness from the referee, two clear DtRs missed and very evitable mass confrontation breaks out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 11 – Very well done: correct freekick, three correct cautions (dissent, UB -> SYC | UB); freekick whistled by AR2 better to wait a few seconds before running off (no quick freekick – more value in potential conflict prevention); interesting potential SPA scene: rather YC than not IMO (chance to run into a lot of space), but I guess it wasn’t tactically valuable.

12 – I don’t know the score of this game, but referee should have realised a conflict in goal area was likely; referee really ought to act more preventatively against the blatant DtR, no whistles or anything there; correct sanctions issued, though I think the VC would be assessed as UB in UEFA nowadays.

13 – Perfect by the referee team! The action of the Yellow/Black player was active offside, even if he only partly executes the attempt to play the ball; correct penalty for tripping; great caution for dissent -> this clip should be shown in seminars as textbook practice, well done referee and AR2.

14 – Referee could have prevented the situation by whistling the clear holding first, no scope for delayed whistle considering two Yellow players were there; then two clear UBs by red team players: player whose push caused the head collision, and then the GK who drags an injured player.

15 – Quite tricky to say who won the position but looks like a defensive foul should have been given; fine to run away to PREVENT dissents, but to run away FROM dissents is unacceptable, referee should have shown more courage.

16 – Sorry but that is a disgusting decision: referee HAS to protect his teammates, totally UNACCEPTABLE that he only cautioned the Blue player for pushing his AR. Unacceptable!!

17 – Blatant DtR – referee either has to caution the Red player (better solution), or allow the game to continue because one could argue the Blue player kicked it deliberately at his opponent and passage in the LotG says play to continue in that case. As a training material for referees: just issue a YC here, it is not only the more tactically valuable solution, it’s the fairer one.

18 – Very tricky situation: I don’t envy the referee here at all! The question is, who judges the flight of the ball / fight for the position better between Black no.15 and Red no.17. In the end. I would argue a genuine grey area where either call was acceptable. Referee’s management was textbook: strong whistle, go over to the spot of the foul, good use of supercilious gestures, slow the game down by forcing a ‘ceremonial’ restart.

19 – Tricky situation: probability of the attacker controlling the ball looks quite high (low bounce, position of defenders), so rather DOGSO in my view.

20 – Hard to say how much the tackle impacted the attacker’s shot, but it seems as though the braver and correct decision in this case would be to issue a YC for reckless tackle to the Yellow/Blue player.

Can we expect any of these referees to be on the FIFA list in due course (I was impressed by Anders Bodding and in particular Sander Johannessen)?

    2. 1. Correct - no punishable handball when the defender kicks the ball into his own arm. Referee's sprinting speed not too convincing - looks like fitness issues?

      2. Correct SPA. The referee is way too calm and lacks awareness, should have detected immediately that this is SPA. Very calm referee, OK gestures.

      3. Ideally a foul first on white (holding), but not very evident, both players using their arms, then blatant pushing, maybe YC for UB. Correct caution for dissent, good procedure, calm, authoritative and clear gestures. I also liked how he kicked the ball back when red player tried to steal metres with the following FK. Little bit unorthodox style, but manages well.

      4. Poor positioning, way to lateral without moving towards the center - this can explain AR's intervention, but he obviously should NOT intervene with the flag here, way outside his area of competence. Acceptable to play on, but penalty could also have been given. Very good management of dissent in the technical area. I guess this is from last season in Norway (2019) - it appears they did not use new rules with cards for team officials? This referee looks talented, also from the previous clips. Good fitness

      5. DOGSO - holding inside area = red card. Crucial mistake. Ball ends behind the player, but because of the holding IMO. Calm referee, should use more time with instructions to goalkeeper and players outside area before the PK.

      6. DOGSO, does not take the ball. Referee is in a bad position, way too central. AR2 could definitely have helped. Crucial mistake for both. Referee may have a courage (decision making) problem or interpretation of situations problem, from this and the last clip.

      7. Assuming that the first yellow card is for the slight holding outside the penalty area, this is an obvious crucial mistake. No effect, advantage given = can not caution for SPA, nor is the holding blatant enough. Second YC OK. Referee was influenced by this kind of decision (double yellow) being "in fashion"? Should not allow himself to be surrounded by red team players. Does not manage situation with authority and gain respect of players well.

      8. For me ideally a SPA, player's direction is too lateral, but acceptable. Referee could also here have acted with more confidence and quicker communication with AR1. Good fitness, but appears to lack sufficient soft skills and situational awareness.

      9. Difficult situation, it looks very much as the player is in the line of vision, but the distance is very long. Easy for the referee to be fooled here. Borderline situation, but for me not a crucial mistake. Unclear whether AR2 raises the flag or not, but he seems to remain standing still, I'm not aware if Norway has particular instructions on these cases, but the flag should have been raised. Good management of the technical area by AR1.

      10. Strong tackle, but for me reckless is OK, trailing leg and low hitting point. Good carding procedure and body language.

      11. Impossible to say whether correct or not. Judging by the reactions it looks like a crucial mistake (hit his back/shoulder?). OK management. Shameful behaviour of the coach, handled well.

      12. For FIFA/UEFA this kind of situation is a crucial mistake, but very difficult in practice: Football expects a penalty to be given. Referee must be supported. Good fitness, good positioning to detect the handball.

      13. For me ideally play on, soft football contact. AR should have used beep signal and not active signalling. For me no SPA because of direction, number of defenders and no team mates close. Positioning of the referee maybe too far to the right. Good, strong body language, but I'd prefer the card to come before the referee goes to the penalty spot if he gives a card. Good communicator, maybe could be a little bit more calm.

      14. Bad pictures, sure looks like SFP to me, very strong tackle. AR2 could have helped? Excellent, quick, strong body language when carding.

    3. 15. Perfect decision! Goalkeeper can not punch the player in the head despite taking the ball. Again very good body language and confidence. Can sprint more and be further forward before the situation? Fitness issue? Looks very talented, tall and authoritatitve referee.

      16. Referee could have sensed this being even quicker to the situation. OK final decision with YC to keeper and white 9 - maybe white 22 could have been booked for the foul. Referee is too passive in my opinion, gestures not too confident, and proceeds to card without the mass confrontation being resolved - white 11 keeps arguing with opponents, without reaction from the referee!

      17. First a clear foul against white 26 not given. Unneccessary tackle, clear YC-reckless. Referee waaaay too passive. Unaware of injured player. IMO no reason for double yellow - unsporting, rather YC for the yellow player who comes to argue. Poor carding procedure. Looks unmotivated, not good impression, maybe fitness issue.

      18. SPA - crucial mistake. Ball is played way too far away from the attacker. Clear and confident referee. Good carding procedure. Referee should have used shirt of another colour.

      19. Referee does well initially to whistle foul early, but should then run to the spot to defuse the situation. Behavious by red number 2 could have been considered as VC, quite violent throw. I can accept YC to both players as acceptable. OK carding and communication. Good fitness, but little strange body/arm posture when running.

      20. With the benefit of the replay, this looks like a very strong studs up tackle despite taking the ball. Crucial mistake, but difficult and a penalty (+YC or RC) would have been extremely brave. Referee loses unawareness momentarily because of shouts for handball from red team (with new rules = handball, gains advantage in penalty area, with old rules = OK). Good positioning, but should have "sold" the NO PENALTY decision better with gestures.

      21. Correct YC-DtR. EXCELLENT awareness and carding procedure!

      22. Ball from defender correctly interpreted by referee, so well done to allow the goal. In case of slight touch by attacker it would be difficult - I think this would have had to be considered as undeliberate deflection and therefore offside. Management afterwards could have been better. Caution for dissent immediately, especially the goalkeeper. AR could have been protected better. Good that the caution finally comes though, most important thing. Strong body language and good carding as in the previous clip. I get the impression of a very talented referee.

      23. No words for this, the referee and his ARs (same AR1 as in clip 22?) are totally clueless. It's difficult because the referee has to have four things in his mind (1. foul or not, 2. penalty or free kick, 3. YC or RC, 4. identity of the player). But he cannot allow himself this total loss of authority. And in the end, the completely wrong player is sent off. Obvious crucial mistake. Referee with lack of confidence, management, awareness and communication skills.

      24. Looks very much like a holding foul on the defender initally, referee maybe positioned too central under the circumstances. Then OK caution for dissent, but poor procedure, calls one player over, but shows card to another one (also see white 4's socks - does he have shin guards??). Then green goalkeeper gets angry for no reason (but infuenced by previous decision(s) probably - no foul, he runs into a player himself. Then OK to give YC and then what looks like direct RC. Takes too long afterwards to discuss with both the dismissed player and other players. Not too good impression of this referee.

    4. 25. First looks a lot like offside, then for me a penalty and DOGSO-YC (maybe a small touch by the goalkeeper, but not enough). Referee looks very passive and far behind play. Completely unaware of white goalkeeper's agitation and the push, which for me is a VC-RC. Still too passive when handling the mass confrontation, no authority, walking all the time. Very poor carding procedure. And THEN, strong whistle and body language to caution a red player for dissent. Strange. Poor management and ability to use right intensity at the right moment.

      26. Poor sprinting ability and positioning. DOGSO correct, well done by AR. OK carding procedure, but then poor management, does not end discussions, no control of the wall or awareness of players going to protest with AR, does not protect AR at all ("go away" signal from 30 m distance!). Goes to AR for no apparent reason, still no control of the wall, more discussions. Very poor impression of this referee, almost unexisting authority, obvious fitness and management issues.

OVERALL: Thank you very much for these videos! It's of course difficult to get an impression of a referee from such short and isolated clips, but I must say that you have introduced us to an interesting group of young referees, some looking very promising and giving a very good impression (Bodding, Johannessen, Holthe, Haga, and maybe most of all: Kellerhals).

Some look promising from the one clip (Børresen, Berg, Al-Fahad, Sæthern, Vermundsen, Dokset, Håversen, Hafezi) but would need more clips of these.

Not convinced by Aarskog, Bye, Aass, Halsen, Sritharan, Kallerud, Pettersen, Støfringshaug, Haugen and Kringstad for various reasons, but again, more than one clip necessary.

Of the referees with more clips, no good impression of Heydary, Al-Hatam, Knutsen, and least of all, Eggen and Mikalsen.

Does anyone with more insight in Norwegian refereeing who know more about the referees have other impressions?

Hopefully we'll in some years see some of these referees in Eliteserien and with the FIFA badge, apart from some of the last names they all seem to have potential!

  42. Pedro Irmatov: when you see that you publish a post but it doesn't appear, it is because the system detects it as spam (especially the posts with many links), so there isn't the need to send it again many times. We check periodically the "SPAM" folder and we allow the comments. Unluckily we can't solve that in other ways, the worst thing is that many SPAM comments are not recognized by system, while only the "correct" ones are blocked. Really sorry for that!
