  1. Important fact: Stieler with his regular team Gittelmann and Joellenbeck. Stieler lives in Hamburg, both linesmen live in the south-west of Germany. In times of Corona, a quite unusual appointment as DFB could have chosen AR´s who live like Stieler in Hamburg (e.g. Thielert) or in western Germany (e.g. Kleve). This underlines the importance of tonight´s match.
Several other regular teams were splitted the last matchdays (e.g. those of Brych, Graefe, Stieler in Bremen,...)

    1. Dietz and Beitinger were at Aytekin's side for the Ruhr Derby weekend before last, also, so it seems to be a clear pattern from DFB to appoint regular trios for the biggest matches.

Which referees do you think that would have attended U17 Euro and U19 Euro final tournament if they had taken place?

    8 referees for U17 and 6 referees for U19.

  5. Very challenging and intense game for Tobias Stieler until the injury to Lewandowski, after which the pace slowed down a bit.

He will do very well to keep his technical accuracy as high it has been - and that's not faultless - certainly he refereed the game well so far. It's still the Stieler we know, chatting very easily with players during breaks in play.

All things considered (fast-paced BL football and staying in the background style especially in the top game of the season is already very challenging, add to that no spectators and fitness troubles after so long out (Stieler already checked his watch twice after some more exhausting bursts of running)) he'd do very well to finish the game being that accurate.

    1. For me handball and penalty.

      Delete
    2. In Italy this situation would have led surely to an OFR for assigning a possible penalty. I must say that German referees are very easy in assessing handball, let me repeat that again.
For sure I can like that, but sometimes this can be against the common criteria of assessment.

      Delete
    3. For me, no handball is the correct call; the arm is below the player's body bracing to support him against the ground.

      Delete
    4. To be honest, nobody saw handball on the pitch (also, we - TV spectators). After replay we saw that.
I think that is the reason why thay restart play quickly.

      Delete
    5. In my opinion, this is a very clear deliberate handling: the arm is going out with the only intent to block the shot. Deliberate handball and even in my opinion worthy of a RC for DOGSO: the chance to score was there for Dortmund. Crucial mistake in my view.

      Delete
    6. There is no dilemma about that. I'm just trying to find an explanation for this mistake of the VAR team.

      Delete
    7. Possible explanations
      1) Stieler had a very good perception, described, what he saw and judged it as clearly no penalty - then it would be hard to intervene for VAR
      2) The VAR team completely missed the handball
      3) The VAR didn't think it was a punishable handball and sure enough about it to neither check further nor recommend an OFR.

Maybe we will be informed by DFB in the next days about the real explanation.

    8. Crystal clear penalty ,deliberate save by hand. Unbelievable German Var again

      Delete
  7. Now a possible penalty for Bayern, in this case it is correct in my opinion by VAR to support referee. However, live Stieler didn't show a very convicing body language after the incident.

    1. If we strictly followed the rules, it was a penalty.
But how many referees would punish that?

      Delete
    2. This was a penalty for me and I see no reason not to punish it, but it is one that we see referees at the top level so often ignore. Much like the tackle after the shot in Gladbach - Leverkusen over the weekend; I wish Stieler here had shown the personality Storks showed in calling that penalty.

      Delete
    3. you mentioned the OFR in situations like that in Italy. How often did the referee then change his decision? Do they just want the ref to see it for themselves or is the decision also changed a lot?

      Delete
    4. As introduction of my answer, I must specify that in Italy there is always a special focus for all handballs and this makes serie A very different from other leagues under this aspect. Sometimes this focus is exaggerated, with the game stopped even for a quite long time for a silent check of a possible situation. I see that in Germany this doesn't happen too often. To answer to your question, most of the times, almost in all situations, there is a change in the decision by referee. It is very rare that a referee goes to watch monitor without changing idea.
Then I must admit that the handball occurred in Dortmund should be assessed as punishable: without the touch by arm, ball would have passed as shot on goal. Arm was not close to body: one could say that this movement was due to the position of the defender, but this doesn't exonerate him from responsibility. He should have avoided that. He took a risk. There should be some official clips by UEFA in various RAP editions, explaining when the arm can be considered in natural position and when not, with the defender in such body posture. I think this case belongs to the latter category: especially the last frontal replay from the point of view of attacker, seems to be quite clear. Let's wait for some official clarifications by DFB, in case.

      Delete
  8. I just rewatched the handling situation - penalty has to be given there.

Boateng makes a 'last-resort' attempt to block the shot, and his arm enlarges his body surface. Penalty (+ YC) HAS to be given in my view.

What a mistake by Stegemann and Assmuth...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I perceive that something is still missing in Stieler to make a possible "big step" (Elite Category) in UEFA, I think that basically he is very good referee with even great skills, but sometimes he doesn't find the right approach to have empathy with players. I see that he is "distant" and maybe too much formal. Let's see how he will develop in future.

    ReplyDelete
  10. A typical Stieler. Very modern style, very sovereign performance. I'm quite sure DFB will be satisfied.
Two key incidents to be discussed. First one is a possible handball by Boateng. I understand that it seems like a handball to some readers:
    - Live broadcaster here in Germany did not talk a lot about this incident (actually just twice). The commentator did not say it's a mistake, so there will be no major discussion.
    - In Germany, some of you mentioned it, I doubt many people want to see a penalty for that. For me no penalty is not a (clear and obvious) mistake. It looks worse in slow motion. I'd like to ask: Was it an unnatural arm position for a tackle with the face towards the goal? I have doubts. Noone would tackle with the arm straight to the body. It's also not very stretched and it does not move towards the ball. So no penalty is at least supportable (for me).
    - German commentator said VAR checked the incident, but we can't be sure whether that's true. Even if it isn't true, I'm not sure whether Sascha Stegemann would have intervened. Not even talking about Stieler awarding a penalty. Maybe this seems strange for non-German spectators.

The penalty in additional time could have (also) been given, but once again not mandatory. It was a physical play by the defender but not a clear penalty. Stieler and Jöllenbeck saw everything and took a supportable decision in conformity with the whole game.

Overall, I would guess that there will more debating here than in media. In my view (very) good performance by Stieler and his crew.

    1. I am with you on the handball (and I am not German, I'm American). The arm is in a natural position; while you can argue it is making the body bigger, it is below the body to support the player who is on the ground. This was a big consideration introduced in the 2019/20 LOTG and for me the preferred call is no penalty.

      Delete
    2. This indeed seems strange to non-German readers. In my opinion - with the benefits of replays - this is a clear penalty and I see no arguments to support a play-on. In my opinion the arm does move towards the ball, is out of body, the shot on goal could be easily expected, and the defender makes the choice to block this shot at his own risk.
If the German FA considers this decision as supportable I strongly believe in Germany other interpretations of the (quite straightforward) laws of the game are used compared to UEFA.

    3. To those who wanted a penalty kick for handball: how could you explain that, at 1-0 for Bayern, in a title-decider match, no one from Borussia asked for a penalty kick?

    1. Just some impressions. In my opinion a wrong free-kick for handling (+YC) led to 0-2 for Wolfsburg. Besides I did not notice any major mistakes.

    2. Agreed on the handball decision. It seemed the defender was shot at from close distance with his arms close to his body.

Apart from that I came by two quite interesting situations, one of which also from the Bayer-Wolfsburg game.

    4. Thank you Dutch Ref!
Schlager should have definitely (at least) stopped the game for the severity of the collision in 71'. Missed alertness by referee in this case. If we analyze the situation from the point of view of Bayer player, we could say that the tackle by opponent was quite unexpected and maybe the contact was not still 100% avoidable, however I think that YC for reckless challenge was the minimum there.
Regarding Bremen, very interesting indeed. VAR could only make an assessment on the possible contact between legs because, we know, the push is always left to referee's discretion. I think that the first replay, that is excellent, shows a very slight contact between the feet of players, and this can be enough to justify an intervention by VAR (thank to the camera we see that this occurred clearly inside). I Italy, based on this footage, very likely a VAR would have called referee and then a penalty would have been assigned for the (missed live) challenge. The second part (pushing) is not VAR stuff in all situations and it seems also outside the box.
I see that in Germany the use of VAR is not so "fussy" like Italy.

      Delete
    5. Chefren, the main issue in Bremen was that nobody was aware of the incident. Neither the players, nor the referee or the VAR. German broadcaster have shown a first replay minutes after the incident occurred. In my view a clear case of 'missed incident' by everyone.

      Delete
    6. Are you sure?
Klassen immediately complained, if I remember correctly.
And the Bremen manager Kohlfeldt reported after the match, that Gräfe told him, it was not enough in his opinion. Therefore I think, Gräfe had at least some perception of the incident.

      Delete
    7. To be honest this is a kind of incident in which it is impossible to say "not enough". This can apply more to pushing, holding... in terms of "low contacts" VAR protocol is very clear.

    6. I agree with you Chefren, to me it's also a deliberate action towards the ball by Boateng. He is not supporting his body with his arm as someone suggested in the comments. Therefore it should have been a penalty in my opinion. Pretty difficult to spot for the referee on the field though, I feel.

But how about the sanction? Mikael W and per aspera ad astra opt for a yellow card in this situation, which I believe is the standard in refereeing. But why? Why is this not considered a red card (DOGSO)? To me, Boateng basically acts like a goalkeeper by knocking a goal-bound shot past the post with his arm.

I remember a situation with Andre Iniesta a few years ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoCIw3vVzzc) in which he blocked a pass towards an attacker who would be one-on-one with the Barcelona goalkeeper with his arm. He received a yellow card, if I'm not mistaken, but I later found out that it was considered a case of DOGSO and he should have seen red. In a way I can see why such a handball is considered DOGSO, but how is it more DOGSO than actually blocking a shot on goal? What are your thoughts?
