World Cup 2010: Refereeing Highlights

Full coverage of the refereeing from World Cup 2010, including full refereeing highlights, as the tournament reaches its tenth anniversary this month.

The calm before the storm...

The end of an era. Only four (!) referees who were in South Africa returned four years later - this, the last World Cup before the Blatter-ordered revolution in FIFA Refereeing, was actually pretty exceptional. Not that the officiating was flawless, that it was certainly was not, but it brought together, for the last time at a World Cup, an eclectic mix of styles and referees, many of whom seem incredibly antiquated by today's standards. It is quite hard to believe that this was a mere decade ago.

Next week you will able to find a sample of our review from the tournament, which will be available on our small blog, Whistles of the Past

For now, please find full refereeing highlights, thanks to the amazing work of HowardMaxi, of all sixty-four games in the links below.

Enjoy!

  2. It passed ten years but I still remember very well those two huge mistakes which resulted in retirement of two great referees - Rosetti and Larrionda.

  3. It is an outstanding work!
Rewatching the famous crucial mistake by Stefano Ayroldi in Argentina - Mexico, I must admit that this action took origin in a quite unexpected way, he was focused on the previous assessment before the shot, and the rest was very likely not assessed at all. It was rather a mental mistake, than a perception one, of course this doesn't justify the error because very blatant at this level, but for sure it was very difficult to be mentally ready there. The confirmation of that is the consultation with Rosetti immediately after the goal, without a positive outcome, he didn't realize at all that Tevez was there.

  4. I have a question that is not relate with WC2010. I watched GALATA-GAZIANTEP match in superleague of Turkey. Can anybody explain me why Alper Ulusoy lost his Fifa badge, and could he be Fifa again, thank you.

    1. I think Ulusoy lost his FIFA badge in 2018 after three years on the list and was replaced by the younger Ümit Öztürk.
No officals explanations published or communicated.

I think it is very unlikely that Ulusoy will get a badge again because his performances are inconsistent and when you ask me,the game Galatasaray - Gaziantep was a disaster. Not talking to players at all and ABSOLUTELY NO action against dissent or physically bulling.

      Delete
    2. But if I am good informed, Ozturk later lost his FIFA, why is that

  5. Today we mourn the death of Badara Sene, former FIFA referee from Senegal, with a very important role in African refereeing, member of both CAF and FIFA referee committees over the years. Inside Africa, Senegalese school of refereeing has been always enhanced, thank also to him.
If I'm not wrong, he was indeed among the FIFA committee during this 2010 WC in South Africa.
    May he rest in peace.

  6. In wc 2010 Mexican referee archundia benito deserved the final not howard webb

    1. England was eliminated due to a big refereeing error, so FIFA compensated that error by, among others, appointing an English referee (Webb) to the final.
In 1986, Brazil was eliminated in the quarter-finals and then FIFA, led by a Brazilian president, appointed a Brazilian referee (Arppi Filho) to the final despite the fact that another Brazilian (Coelho) refereed the final only 4 years before that.

      Delete
    2. Also mexico was eliminated due to a big refereeing error in the same day England eliminated !

      Delete
    3. Yes, but, as you know, these "compensations" only work for the big football federations. By the way, I do not agree with that practice; just pointed out the political interference.

      Delete
  7. And until now i am surprised why benito didn't referee the wc 2010 final ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Watching the highlights of Archundia, I would say
ITA-PAR: Missed YC or even RC (SFP) in 1'. Wrong free kick before the first goal (38'). Good second half in a challenging match
POR-BRA: Possibly too many cards for FIFA's taste in the first half. Maybe a missed penalty for BRA in 45+1'

So, there are some arguments, that could be used against his nomination for the final.

    2. How about a penalty kick not awarded to Germany (foul moved outside the penalty area) in the semi-final against Italy in 2006?

      Delete
    3. @Unknown: since you seem to be a big fan of Archundia, what is your opinion on that situation? The full match is publicly available on the FIFA website.

      Delete
    4. This situation assistant referee must be assist referee in or out penalty area

      Delete
    5. In my opinion archundia benito was on of the best referees in the world and he must be referee wc final 2006 or 2010

      Delete
    6. The assistant referee was also from Mexico (Ramirez), so Archundia's team made a very important error in a significant KMI that decided the winner of a World Cup semi-final.

      Delete
    7. If you add to that the red card missed in min. 1 of Italy-Paraguay, you have the reason why he was not trusted with a World Cup final.

      Delete
    8. Howard webb didn't whistle correct penalty for spain in the first match against Switzerland in wc 2010 and spain lost this match

      Delete
    9. In my opinion archundia benito deserved the wc 2010 final but political gone for webb

  11. Nice but the videos are a bit too long. You could shorten them. Some situations are not highlights and could be removed.

    1. Usually, highlights should not be longer than 3-5 minutes.

    2. I think 3-5 minutes is too short to assess a referee's performance. Something like 10-15 minutes is a good compromise IMO.

    1. This one is definitely worse than the Shukralla one from SEN-POL 2018. Kuipers waves the player back on thinking that the pass is going to go backwards to the center back, but the passer turns and plays it to the LB instead. Should have been more cautious and seen that this pass was available and waited to waive the player back on... this situation was preventable and is Kuipers' fault, unlike the Shukralla incident from 2018.

Well, we can definitely say that this was expected. I can guess that Rosetti directly (and kindly) asked to Greek (and maybe other federations) for appointing Dutch and French referees.

    2. Interesting to see Zwayer as well. Bundesliga is almost over, I must say that in the context of the restart after the break, Germany started even "too early" and now there will be more than a month before August. However, for sure no problems for German referees, it is not a too long time, real problem was only for Dutch and French, too long time between March and August...

      Delete
    3. I am almost convinced that Rosetti not only suggested to HFF to appoint Dutch and French referees but appointed them himself.

Since the beginning of the SL season, most of the foreign referees that came were 1st and 2nd UEFA Group. We had 5 First group referees (Gestranius, Vincic, Stieler, Aghayev and Sanchez Martinez). The only Elite who came was Grinfield.

Now we got 4 Elite referees in 3 days.

    1. So far the feedback is only positive. Sad to see that it looks like you want to spite the readers and possibly not create more content like this because of positive feedback (did you want negative?)...

Sviat M: positive feedback ('fantastic and big job')
Chefren: positive feedback ('It is an outstanding job!')
Anonymous (23:55): positive feedback ('nice') with an recommendation
Jackson: positive feedback (agrees with Anonymous' positive feedback)
Anonymous (05:33): neutral feedback (gives his opinion about the lenght but doesn't say anything negative)

So, you have 4, no - 5 - I agree that it's a fantastic work and thank you very much for it, positive feedbacks and 0 negative feedbacks.

    2. It's a shame this is even a discussion point at all!

HowardMaxi and I put in hours of tireless work to cut all those videos (and next week we'll post some reviews); if we were only doing it for the readers then surely it would be a bit disappointing to read "Nice, but...", and "Usually, highlights should not be longer than 3-5 minutes". But in the end that is people's own choice.

Conversely, our thanks to everyone who did comment and discuss WC 2010, we hope you enjoyed / are enjoying the highlights!

HowardMaxi and I wouldn't complete such a large project as this one without a huge passion for refereeing, regardless of anything else besides!

All being well, we can hopefully cover a further tournament together :)

    1. Wow... I wasn’t expecting any of these appointments! Delerue chosen over Schneider for Coupe de France Final is surprising, same can be said about Brisard over (the very much pushed) Letexier.

Congratulations to both of them for these appointments!

      Delete
    2. I actually both appointments make sense.
I have the feeling that the Coupe de France is given as a recognition of a whole carrier (eg Lesage in 2018), and given the fact that Delerue is 2 years older than Schneider, it makes sense to read his name here, while I feel that Delerue is below his standards, but deserves it for several years of good officiating.
The standards are IMO différents for the Coupe de la Ligue, purely given as reward of a shaped year (eg Millot last year and Schneider 4 years ago-IIRC- for excellent seasons), and I'm happy to see Brisard's name here over Letexier's, because the latter is underperforming this season in my eyes, but has still plenty of time to learn and officiate this final because he is very talented and promising.
Anyway congratulations to both officials and best of luck!

      Delete
    3. I expected Schneider in Coupe de France, because he has had by far the better appointments (just before the lockdown, he handled his first Lyon vs. Saint-Étienne quite well). I agree with you, when you say that Delerue is getting games below his standards (I think he's a good referee, but he gets no real big games), but that is the consequence when you only appoint Turpin, Bastien and Buquet for the big games.

Brisard is in my opinion actually quite a decent referee and I agree when you say that Letexier is underperforming (I would even say that this is an understatement, he has been in controversy many times this season!). I feel Letexier is pushed too hard by French Referee Committee (and UEFA?). I actually like Brisard's appointment because no only he deserves it, but also because we finally see a different face handling PSG-Lyon, after in the previous years only Turpin, Bastien, Buquet and Gautier handled it...

      Delete
    4. In Letexier's situation, i think there is something "wrong" with the French Referee Committee.

For me, as two young referees were pushed made it to the Elite (Turpin and Bastien), they tried to replicate that with Letexier, (who has some obvious qualities but, if you ask me, is too often below an UEFA 1st Cat referee this season and has even made some catastrophical performances months ago) and with any (very) young promising referee with, in my eyes, not enough criteria with the performances done on the pitch (IMHO,Karim Abed didn't even deserve his FIFA badge as Thomas Léonard, older, is sadly not even close to the FIFA list for the Committee, even with much more qualities).

You won't see an international career as Del Cerro Grande's one done by a French Referee at the moment, sure thing.

I can only hope that, while Gautier and Buquet are entering into their last years of officiating, we will see more of refs like Schneider, Millot or Brisard handling top clashes, as they deserve to be appointed to these games, to develop theirselves and not seeing the same four names for the same matches over and over again.

  22. Decisive matches on last Bundesliga matchday
For the 4th CL spot (Gladbach 62 points, Leverkusen 60)
    Leverkusen - Mainz: Cortus
    Gladbach - Hertha: Aytekin
Against direct relegation (Düsseldorf 30, Bremen 28)
    Bremen - Köln: Dankert
    Union - Düsseldorf: Osmers

And Benjamin Brand will have his 1.Bundesliga comeback after more than 2 years injury break (in the unimportant Frankfurt-Paderborn).

    Full appointments tomorrow.
