    2. Originally a danish team was on the game, but DBU didn't/misunderstood/follow UEFA's Corona-test, so therefore the Danes wouldn't allow to ref the gane,

  3. Many interesting games without a clear favourite and UEFA risks much appointing referees with very small international experience. You can win much in case of good performance, so motivation will be there for sure. I hope refs won't be overwhelmed by that huge chance they face. Good luck to all appointed officials!

  4. Isn't it for Kamphuis en Lindhout first international match? And then direcly CL?

    1. Yeah. If it wasn't for Covid crisis they would have made their international debut in an U17 Elite Round match, U21 qualifier or so.

      Delete
    2. Hmm, but wouldn't it make more sense if they would debute now in EL? I mean, especially Celtic-Ferencvaros is a huge game in this stage and I'd expected a more experienced referee there.

    3. World situation is abnormal, just having a referee for a game is a success.

  5. I wonder, if U17 & U19 Euros had taken place and considering the promoted referees this summer, which would have been the line-up for the tournaments?

My bet, considering referees that already attended the tournaments and some 'geographical balance':

U17 (8 referees): Timothéos Christofí (CYP), Lionel Tschudi (SUI), Luís Godinho (POR), Petri Viljanen (FIN), Yigal Frid (ISR), Aleksandrs Anufrijevs (LAT), Julian Weinberger (AUT) & Volen Chinkov (BUL)

U19 (6 referees): Jérôme Brisard (FRA), Glenn Nyberg (SWE), Donatas Rumsas (LTU), Roi Reinshreiber (ISR), Fran Jović (CRO) & Fábio Veríssimo (POR)

    1. Interesting consideration
      My lists would be
U17: Hämäläinen (FIN), Hennessy (IRL), Neokleous (CYP), Nobre (POR), Nyberg (SWE), Simovic (SRB), Stegemann (GER), van Driessche (BEL)
U19: Cann (MLT), Jakubik (POL), Kruashvilli (GEO), Muntean (MDA), Pejin (CRO), Thorarinsson (ISL)

      Delete
    2. @Philipp Afaik Third category referees go to U17 Euro and Second category referees to U19 Euro. I think U17 tournament is seen as a chance for small country (or rather non big-5) federations to send their referees.

@Unknown If he doesn't stagnate, I think he has a big chance to attend next u21 tournament, yeah.

      Delete
    3. Quite possible, yes.
Potential list for U21 EURO next year:
Dabanovic (MNE), Letexier (FRA), Guida (ITA), Martins (POR), Palabiyik (TUR), Peljto (BIH), Petrescu (ROU), Raczkowski (POL), Sanchez (ESP), Schärer (SUI), Schüttengruber (AUT), Siebert (GER)

      Delete
    4. @Quilava: OK, in that case, I would put Nyberg instead of Pejin for U19. And Berke (HUN), Gishamer (AUT) and Shurman (UKR) instead of Hennessy, Nyberg and Stegemann for U17.

      Delete
    5. @Philipp Yep, that potential u21 list seems spot-on. With GS spots enlarged from 12 to 16, bringing 12 referees would be a reasonable choice.

  12. Very good first half for Sjoberg in Tirana. All decisions were correct, always close, never too close. No tensions on the pitch, without harsh fouls so far.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't understand the logic of having 3 substitutes at qualifying rounds. If there is a general rule this should be applicable at all rounds and events.
Doveri had generally good game in Greece but he missed a clear penalty for Beşiktaş at 87th minute. Also allowed too many tactical fouls of PAOK without any card. Especially #7 of PAOK.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i think so. Doveri showed very poor management.

  14. Excellent Sjoberg in Tirana. I had lot of doubts, but he had no problems. It wasn’t hard match for him, players respected him and each other, but nevertheless all his decisions were correct, on ludi g his ARs.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good overall performance by Doveri on PAOK-BJK.

He showed a total of 6 YC's (5-1) and a double YC to ass. coach of Besiktas. All cautions were correct but IMO he missed another one at min. 20' to PAOK N4.

The most interesting scene happened at min. 87'. There is a handball by Giannoulis (PAOK). Even though the defender doesn't see the ball, the hand is over his head and enlarges the body surface. Punishable IMO.

AR2 with an offside call against BES at min. 73'. A few seconds after BES scores. Wrong offside call.

    1. Good overall summary mate, terrible miss of handball by Doveri at 87 as you said, and a wrong offside call indeed at 73.

  17. Any chance to have the videos from PAOK - Besiktas?
I looked for full game, but it is quite impossible to find it, at least as "reasonable" download... I would be interested in the handball and offside situations in second half.

    2. Clear penalty missed, Doveri didn't see it at all.
Punishable because defender can't have arms in that position, no matter he didn't see the ball coming.
      Maybe chances for AR2.
      VAR would have intervened.

    3. Found full game on youtube, here second half:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSyrd0c9tDg
29:30 video minute the offside situation, however given that offside line is not shown, we can't be sure I think

      Delete
    4. I am not so sure about this situation. Something is very strange, I would say that the defender is pulled and he wants to complain and ask for a foul and is then hit with the ball.

So maybe just missed foul in attack? Too bad we cant see some more angles or few seconds before what we see on replay.

      Delete
    5. Very straightforward situation in my opinion, arms beyond shoulder level so there’s no other option left than awarding a penalty.
Quite striking is the referee’s positioning, too wide in the first place and when the cross is given not even a slight attempt to get in a better position...

      Delete
    6. Surprised everyone is making a conclusion with only the video available above. Yes, without any context of course it's a penalty. But if we are going to talk about VAR, the question of a foul in the APP would come up. Given what we see here, it seems quite plausible that the defender was shoved in the back before his arms went in the air. So I think it's very possible (not definite--but possible) that any VAR intervention would actually result in a defensive free kick after the penalty was "confirmed."

      Delete
    7. Though I don’t think anything serious happened before the handball it cannot completely be ruled out indeed. But the arms going up at least aren’t caused by this possible shove, this much can be seen in the replay.
But my point holds, from his position and without any serious attempt to improve his position, Doveri has no chance whatsoever to recognize the handball nor the possible push.

  18. Great RC for SFP decision by Balakin in Qarabağ-Sheriff in 37'.

Studs high in the back/shoulder, full intensity.

    1. What do you think about penalty call? Very debatable IMO.

  19. Penalty for AZ in last seconds of the match. The player couldn’t reach the ball, it would go out of the bounds, and the foul occurred at the moment when the ball was just on the line, still in the pitch.

  20. OT Nations League. So, the Romanian Federation announced the referee for Romania vs Northern Ireland, and this is Francois Letexier. Also, Kovacs will have Sweden vs France, and Hategan the World Cup final reloaded, between France and Croatia. IMO is the first big clash for Kovacs.

  21. A penalty and direct RC in Cluj-Dinamo Zagreb.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Corrrect penalty for Cluj and RC for Dinamo Zagreb for DOGSO and not genuine attempt to play the ball (constant holding from behind). However, PK should be repeated because of GK encroachment and because at least 7-8 players came earlier in PK area, some of them 2-3 meters.

If the intensity is strong enough (and to me it seems that it is at least supportable to whistle), RC is clear.

Regarding possible encroachment, on the replay it seems that GK left foot was partially on the line in the moment of shoot.

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=emb_title&time_continue=44&v=tH1fXJxMNo8

I have to say it is completely unacceptable mistake, no explanation for this! Even the assistant's position is perfect.

Should the main referee have spotted this and overturn the AR decision?

I remember that in Croatian league before VAR I saw great reactions from Pajac and Jovic who decided that goals were regular despite AR flag.

p.s. Sarajevo president recorded a video message and said they will send a strong message and officially complain to UEFA, because they see this also as a fight for all "small" nations. I think they forgot that they played against a team from Belorussia...

      penalty incident (tripping):
      https://streamable.com/7tji7v

      Delete
    3. Play on in both cases.

      Delete
    4. In the first situation I would prefer a play on as the attacker is also to ‘blame’ for the contact, moving his leg aside. IMO no clear mistake though.
The second situation I think is a penalty, a simple trip.
But calling the first while not whistling the second creates big problems I’m afraid.

      Delete
    5. Pawel M.: I invite you to use a more polite and appropriate language. That's last warning.

Penalty awarded to Omonia: I wouldn't have whistled it. Both players put their legs and there is a collision, I don't see exclusive faults by defender here. A very good replay is the one close when ball is coming, you can see that almost both players are making the same action. Just an unlucky event here, not enough for a so important whistle. However, once whistled, in a context of possible VAR intervention, I think this call would be supported.
Possible pemalty for Legia: I don't see a clear foul. Ok decision to play on. If not contact between legs, the rest is not enough for me.

      Delete
    6. What about:

'A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body.'

with regard to the first incident?

The second one should have been a penalty imo, clear leg contact.

      Delete
    7. First penalty is ok, supportable decision.

Second situation: IMO simple and clear penalty for tripping! I really dont see any good argument against it, it is a contact that streched the attackers legs so he lost balance in attempt to get to the ball. It is careless tackle and should be punished.

As someone said before, it is especially problematic in comparison with the first situation.

      Delete

    8. On the contrary, I think that in the first moment - a penalty, and in the second - play on! Although, if there was a VAR, then I think he would have supported both penalties ...

      Delete
    9. IMO both penalties. I agree that it's problematic to only give one and not the other. But I have to say quite tricky situations, not easy at all.

      Delete
    10. In order to give an objective comment on the two incidents, one should know about criteria that the referee applied during the match. I did not see the match but it seems to me the different criteria was applied in the two situations, which is wrong. Bearing in mind incidents from the UCL finals, I would say no PK in either of the two situations from the LEG-OMO match.

      Delete
  26. A short general impression on Nobre performance in Romania: He had a good solid performance. His presence on the pitch does not reflect so much his lack of experience and his age. I would say he had some mistakes in foul detection, so he could improve in that aspect. Also in 2-3 situations he was not in a perfect position. Personally, I think Portugese refs are pushed too much and that some of them dont justify their appointments, but considering this performance and Nobre's age, I would encourage more appointments for him.
