  1. Interesting to read Zwayer's appointment for Serbian national team, it should be the first meeting after the famous facts of 2018 WC.

  2. What a game for Gil Manzano :))

  3. A mistake in norway game.. Jakob Sundberg is not a assistsnt Referee but "normal" referee

  4. What I don't understand is the management by Norwegian federation, he gets this appointment as fourth official, but what is the meaning in a friendly game? A no sense for me, instead of appointing a very young referee in that role to make experience for the future.
What I can say based on the management by Norway is that they would like to say that Moen is an excellent referee and they disagree with all UEFA and FIFA thought about him, so they use him in meaningless roles (for him, I mean, and considering his experience), instead of making room for new talents.

  5. International debut for Daniel Schlager (GER) in Luxembourg - Northern Ireland!

  6. With how the draw for UCL, early shout for Anthony Taylor for Europa league Final, because aside from Bayern VS Villarreal I can’t see any other game he or Oliver can officiate in the UCL, except all English team dramatically fails to qualify.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Taylor can officiate Bayern-Villareal?

Oliver had Bayern in previous round, so not very likely we will see him again.

Liverpool-Benfica to one of the Spanish refs?

      Delete
    2. Del Cerro Grande and Lahoz are out! The former had Benfica and the latter Liverpool in the second leg. Oliver out too, Taylor very likely in the second leg in that game, maybe Vincic in the first leg.

    3. Taylor is relegated.

    2. Thanks! Great analysis Referee10.

Orsato - indeed Man City-Atletico sounds like a great(!) game for him. I'm not sure about Makkelie because he issued a RC to Atletico in group stage. Committe also cares about headlines before the game.

  8. Appointments for Saudi Pro League matches today:

    Al-Ittihad vs. Al-Hazem
    Referee: Andrés Cunha (URU)
    VAR: Julio Bascuñán (CHI)

    Al-Hilal vs. Al-Ahli
    Referee: Georgi Kabakov (BUL)
    VAR: António Nobre (POR)

  9. I will predict that:

    Chelsea-Real: Turpin / Hategan
    Man City-Atletico: Siebert / Orsato
    Villareal-Bayern: Vincic / Taylor
    Benfica-Liverpool: Gil Manzano / Makkelie

    1. Kovacs and Marciniak/Jovanovic backup, maybe the Committee is very dissapointed with Vincic or they want to protect Makkelie more

    2. My early predictions are similar:
      Chelsea-Real: Hategan / Turpin
      Man City-Atletico: Siebert / Marciniak
      Villareal-Bayern: Vincic / Makkelie
      Benfica-Liverpool: Gil Manzano / Orsato

    Referee: Eldorian Hamiti (ALB)
    As.Ref 1 : Rejdi Avdo (ALB)
    As.Ref 2 : Nertil Bregasi (ALB)
    Fourth Official: Genc Nuza (Kos)

  11. My early predictions:
    Chelsea-Real: Marciniak / Orsato
    Man City-Atletico: Siebert / Makkelie
    Villareal-Bayern: Jovanovic / Taylor
    Benfica-Liverpool: Kovacs / Mateu Lahoz

I would protect Vicnic, Hategan and Turpin for the next stage

    1. I think Orsato and Mateu will be kept for semi-finals. Usually, refeees who already did UCL final will get a semi-final in the following year.

      Delete
    2. Yeah generally it's true but with three spanish team in the QF, there is an high probability tp get them in the SF so no way for Mateu.

    3. Taylor is relegated.

    4. Vincic , is this something kind of joke

  12. Early call Michael Oliver no match for him in the quarter finals in Europa league. First match has an Italian team, second match contains the team he just reffed last night while the 3rd and 4 team contains British team. We are likely to see Rossetti not care about team reffed before as we saw for Makkelie and Turpin early this season or maybe just maybe Oliver gets an Italian team finally.

Frankfurt - Barcelona: Letexier / Massa
West Ham - Lyon: Jovanovic / del Cerro Grande
Braga - Rangers: Aytekin / Schärer

    2. I replace Massa by Gözübüyük because of the domestic ban for the Italian.

  14. With three teams from England and Spain in three different games, I would expect a referee from the respective country for the first leg of the remaining game - for example:

    VILLARREAL - BAYERN: Taylor
    BENFICA - LIVERPOOL: Gil Manzano

    Peter/Vienna

BODO - ROMA LETEXIER - GESTRANIUS (FAREWELL MATCH)

    5. Regarding Gestranius and a possible farewell game, this practice of assigning a referee to an important match if he has already announced his retirement seems to have been abolished by years.
We saw Brych in Real Madrid - Inter but the game was not important for the standings. I think that farewell games are very rare nowadays if compared to past, because the UEFA refereeing has clearly changed in recent years, they are more open to club and national teams, and they make assignments with more method. One can discuss about that.

  16. My Predictions
    Chelsea-Real Marchinak/Orsato
    ManCity-Atletico Siebert/Makelie
    Villareal-Bayern Taylor/Vincic
    Benfica-Liverpool Turpin/Cakir

    1. its very difficult predict the referees

      Delete
  18. I was trying to make some predictions for CL quarterfinals, but indeed, despite of having increased the number of Elite referees, it is still very difficult, for the nationality of clubs and the previous assignments. I wouldn't have said that before having a try!
Reasoning about the games: for sure Taylor should get Villarreal - Bayern, the only possible choice. The same for a Spanish, maybe Mateu, maybe Del Cerro in Benfica - Liverpool.
Then, about the six remaining games, Turpin and Hategan will get a match for sure, but then after that I start without doubts. If we appoint Orsato again in quarterfinals, maybe he will be out for the semifinals, at the same time I really can't find other options.
Vincic with two round of 16 games, maybe a quarterfinal so close to the previous game would be too much?
Marciniak coming from a rather weak Juventus - Villarreal in normal conditions would have got EL, but now looking at the 8 quarterfinals, I'm not sure anymore. Siebert even less likely after the performance in Villarreal - Juventus. Makkelie as possible candidate for the final, could get EL. But even including them, one must say that we have indeed always the same names...
However, it is also true that as for now they will think to 4 names for first legs, and only after that, the referees for return games will be decided, but difficult to think that there will be room for new Elite in some games.

    So, what I can say:
    Chelsea-Real
    Villareal - Bayern Taylor
    Benfica - Liverpool a Spanish
Then, the rest to be selected between: Marciniak, Orsato, Vincic, Hategan, Turpin, Makkelie, Siebert. But there are many question marks for some of them for different reasons, as I explained above.
The unavailability of names like Cakir and Karasev is strongly felt!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Differently from CL, a big choice for sure in EL and ECL.
Here the new Elite referees will help committee in having many options. Jovanovic, Letexier, Schaerer and so on... the hope is that they will become soon CL KO stage big names as well :)

  19. I'll go for:
    Chelsea-Real:Turpin/Marciniak
    ManCity-Atletico:Siebert/Orsato
    Villareal-Bayern: Hategan/Taylor
    Benfica-Liverpool: Manzano/ Makkelie

    Leipzig-Atalanta: Lahoz/Bastien
    Frankfurt-Barcelona: Kovacs/Massa
    West Ham-Lyon: Aytekin/Vinic
    Braga-Rangers: Jovanovic/Soares Dias

    Bodo-Roma: Martinez/Schrarer
    Feyenoord-Slavia Prag: Oliver/Meiler
    Marseille-Poak: Gözübüyük/Zwayer
    Leicester-PSV: Letexier/Del Grande

    3. @ George, of course it was an ironic comment, but as you see in this blog nobody cares when an "Elite" referee makes basic mistakes which are difficult to explain. Nobody dared to comment one of the most shocking performances of the year so far. Here everyone is looking for the smallest detail just to justify any referees' mistake. Nobody cares about the best possible solution. That's why you are allowed only to praise a referee no matter how idiotic his performance is.

    4. I think Gil Manzano is having a good season though, even if yesterday had a veeeeery weak performance.

    3. All the best to Gittelmann after this unacceptable incident!
To be honest we should praise DFB this time, they acted differently from UEFA and most of the other federations, where the assistant referee would have been forced to go on!
The same Gittelmann, if this incident had happened in a UEFA game, would have had to continue. We must give strong signals against violence on match officials!

    4. Side note: This was the first time thate a game has been abandoned in bundesliga since St.Pauli - Schalke in 2011. Back then, the assistant was also hit by a cup of beer (You can still find the scene on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT0gv6IM4CU, Referee: Aytekin, AR: Schiffner)

    1. Interesting info, thanks. However I think she should reach the UEFA Elite status before that, at moment she is Cat. 1.

    2. @Chefren I agree. I had thought that all female refs who get games in the local men's top league would get UEFA games also. I did some research, the ones that do are Martincic (Croatia), Adamkova (Czechia), Staubli (Switzerland), Monzul (Ukraine), Frappart (France), Foster (Wales), and Nurmustafina (Kazakhstan). But certainly not all of them get UEFA men's assignments. I wonder what determines that

      Delete
  24. If Villareal is knocked-out in the QF, I think we can see a Spanish ref in the semi-final of Bayern (vs. Liverpool/Benfica).

I don't think it is an issue if there is a Spanish team in the other Semi.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with many of the statements above. Very very hard to make appointments.

Safe bets in QF Champions League:
-1. Anthony Taylor: in the Bayern-game
-2. Slavko Vinčić: A QF CL could be his final test for the Europa League final. A
-3. Ovidiu Hategan: Same as Vinčić.
-4. One Spanish ref. Potentially Gil Manzano if Spain/UEFA considers future perspectives...)

    Doubt:
-5. Srđan Jovanović: Do we consider him to be OUT? I think he might get another test as he is in the running for a WC spot. The match in round of ’16 wasn’t challenging it all, so it is hard to predict…
-6. Daniele Orsato: Under “normal” circumstances, he would be saved for a Semi-Final, but the amount of available referees isn’t that great.
-7. Clement Turpin: I think he will get a QF CL test, although I can also imagine that committee wants to ‘save’ him for a Semi-final CL. Not possible if I consider the number of available referees.
-8. Szymon Marciniak: has a great season so far. His last match wasn’t great in front of a committee member. I think, if he had delivered, he would go straight into the Semi-final. Now, not so sure… Atletico – Man Utd sounds like a great game for him. There are not many other options that can handle Atletico (terrible team to referee).
-9. Daniel Siebert: same as Marciniak, last CL-match wasn’t great. But still, I think he will be appointed again. He has the skills, he has a good season so far. He is the German ref for upcoming WC and will need the experience.
-10. Danny Makkelie: Will be interesting to found out what committee decides; to be protected or another final test? Makkelie is the only CL-final candidate with Semi-final experiences (CL/Euro). RMA-PSG in front of a committee member can be read as a final test and he delivered. All Dutch clubs are out. He also implemented the ‘new’ requirements very well (protect the game, no easy free-kicks…). Flawless assistants and a reliable VAR. But based on the availability, I’m not so sure they can already protect a referee.

8 matches and ‘just’ 10 available options.
Did it ever happen that a referee officiated two quarter-finals in CL?

    1. * Atletico – Man City

      Delete
    2. 100% agree with all you said and your questions are mines as well, so I can't answer :) This should be the overall scheme.
We will see what committee has in mind.
In particular, I had thought exactly about a possible appointment for Jovanovic in a game, in case I think the first leg between Bayern and Villarreal or Liverpool and Benfica.
Making such choice would allow committee to "save" at least a spot for other referees. This would be the only way to try to solve the problem of unavailability of big names.
Still not sure about Siebert because an appointment in Conference League is a strong signal to me, that committee was disappointed. I hardly believe that after Conference he gets again Champions, normal path would be Europa League the next one, or, in case they had in mind to appoint him in CL again, they would have assigned him to EL right now.
But this only on paper of course...

      Delete
    3. I hope they protect Makkelie. One controversial decision can cost them the final.
Taylor is not likely with three strong English teams in competition.
Turpin should do a semi final first, he has less experience in sonorous Knock-out matches than Makkelie and France is already hosting the CL-final.

      Delete
    4. In semi-finals CL, it will be even more complicated to make appointments.

Taylor is possible in a Semi-final CL if Benfica will win against Liverpool (and/or if both Madrid-based teams win against the English teams). Not very likely but... Never say never.

I think committee should pray that Villareal doesn't make it to the Semi-final. :)) In that case, a Spanish ref (for example the experienced Mateu lahoz) will be appointed in the Bayern semi-final.

Vincic/Hategan are both in the running for the EL Final. The EL Final referee is normally not appointed in Semi-finals of CL.

-The 'granted' Semi-final CL option is Orsato.
-I hope also a Spanish one
-Then, we have two spots left for the two refs with best performance in the QF CL, I'd say.

      Delete
    5. I agree with most of your thoughts but Vincic had a terrible game in Manchester and was heavily criticised in media. He doesn't deserve a CL QF after that performance.

      Delete
    6. I don't agree. He was lenient as every other UEFA referee this round so far. Nothing extraordinary. In addition, he was a very strong manager on the pitch (as always). Given the current ultra lenient line forced by Rosetti, he was even quite good.

      Delete
    7. Very good comment Unknown. In my opinion Taylor for Villareal-Bayern and one spanish referee for Benfica-Liverpool are safe bets. I also think that we'll see Hategan and Turpin. After these names, very difficult to predict. Marciniak and Siebert should be logical choices but not sure considering their last matches. But the lack of other options leaves almost no choice for committee. I personally wasn't fully convinced by Vincic last match + he also had 2 R16 matches already. Makkelie would be very risky as he's the clear favourite for the final, same for Orsato for SF but maybe UEFA needs to take the risk.

      Delete
    8. The important thing is to prevent what Collina did with Cakir in 2016 from happening again, giving him two CL semifinals out of four.

      Delete
  26. is it possible that we will see referees like meler, letexier, schaerer in QF?

    1. The names you mentioned for CL Quarterfinals are impossible in my opinion.

      Delete
    2. If rosetti wants to make a greater fool of himself than he already did by appointing massa for an 1/8final, these names would be possible. And in that case id add gozubuyuk to the party too ;)

      Delete
  27. My ideas for CL Quarterfinals...
VIL - BAY Taylor / Vincic
CHE - REAL Hategan / Turpin
MAN - ATL Siebert / Marciniak
BENF- LIV Jovanovic / Gil Manzano

    ReplyDelete
  28. .. EL - QF (but thats so hard, more a game than prediction, honestly)

    FRA - BARCA Schärer/ Kovacs
WHAM - LYON Guida/ Makkelie (safe for CL - HF or Final)
    BRAGA - GLA Letexier/ DCerroG
RBL - BERG Oliver/ Mateu Lahoz (CL HF if possible)

  29. OT:

I think that aside from Mateu who is one of the best refs in the world, Spain's most reliable and more consistent refs is Cuadra Fernandez.

He got some tricky and tough matches in La Liga this season and altough he has his lenient criterium and approach, most of his matches were very good managed and with no important mistakes.

IMO he can become Spanish top ref in couple of years, just needs to continue like this.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can report a very good performance by Kovács in Crvena zvezda - Rangers. I think we can even expect him to get UCL QF (maybe instead of Hațegan who had problems in his last game).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree, he was solid - see my comments in the UEL post.
He performed very well starting with Euro and this is the reason why he was added to the pre-selected list. Kovacs and Jovanovic are the two new names rising in UEFA.

      Delete
    2. Problems? What problems? Only not showing YC for Ronaldo. Hațegan was good to very good in his last game. Vincic, Marciniak and Siebert dissapointed in UCL, not Hațegan. He will get a game in QF 100%

      Delete
    3. I meant he was not accepted on the pitch, every decision was questioned by players and partially he caused that by no clear line regarding what was a foul and not. He couldn't adapt to new Rosetti's vision of allowing very physical play.

  31. Very strange thing happened in Mainz–Bielefeld (Referee: Felix Zwayer): Goal Line Technology gave a Zwayer a signal on his watch, indicating that the ball crossed the line. Zwayer stopped the game and awarded the goal. Zwayer looked surprised about this signal and talked with the players, explaining that he got a signal. However, videos clearly showed that the ball was on the line but has never crossed the goal line. VAR Martin Thomsen invited Zwayer to have an OFR, showing him the replays. Zwayer took his decision back and continued the match with drop ball. I liked how he talked calmly with players from both teams, explaining the strange situation. Imagine, this would have happened without VAR...

    1. Very interesting thanks for this report, maybe we will have a video. I remember when GLT didn't work in a game due to some particular circumstances, HawkEye released an official statement explaining the reasons of the incident, this time I think it will be the same...

    2. According to DFB's twitter account, where information about VAR checks is provided, Zwayer did not give the goal but only stopped the game because of the GLT signal and let the VAR check whether the ball has crossed the line. Seems plausible as, from what one could see on TV, looked very surprised about the signal on his watch.

    3. Zwayer himself told german media that the on field decision was goal but that they were very surprised and asked VAR for a check.
Otherwise from what I saw a convincing and accepted performance by Zwayer with three penalty kicks awarded for the home team, all fully correct.

  32. I can report a sound performance by Cuadra Fernández in Alavés-Granada (decisive relegation game), despite missing a PK in 1st half. Very intense and challenging game (also for both ARs) but he managed to remain in control of it.

    2. Well I watched that match and I dont know if @Quilava will agree with me or not, but Jesus Gil was average yesterday and he had plenty mistakes.

His big mistake is not having the same criterium whether it is for bookings, calling fouls or managing the game.
Ok, we all know that Getafe's matches are always tough to handle, they are very phisycal team with lot of tricky players like Suarez, Mata,Cabaco, Arambarri and dome others.
But IMO, he could have done better thing in managing them.

His biggest mistake in this match was not awarding clear RC for DOGSO, he needed to be called to have a look.

I don't have a video, but I honk that Getafe players were complaining that he didnt whistle foul on their player, they backed him in VAR room and there was RC for Getafe player after he changed his original YX decision.

    4. Come on... How on earth you can see that foul, whistle it and NOT show a red card?! It shows a total disrespect to the Laws of the Game. I understand if you make a mistake because you haven't seen something, but this is absolutely unforgivable. I think that is a situation where the referee deserves a very serious punishment because absolutely nothing can explain his behaviour.
