You see in the inferior categories referees who never advance, because they either "enjoy" showing cards, or can't keep control of the game in another way.
"Believe in yourself, not your cards!" First thing my mentor told me.Unfortunately, my career was stopped because of observers who stopped referee 20 years ago and only look for your use of cards.
Couldn’t agree more. Vincic approach has been excellent. Some comments here are expecting 1 red and 4 yellows in a game that hasn’t warranted one card. I’m sure as the game goes on, the approach will change. Great half Mr Vincic
DeleteAnd I agree to a large extent as well. Though the no card decision for the high studs challenge is hard to defend in a technical sense this was the only situation in which a disciplinary sanction would be in place. But, on the field of play the decision was fully accepted. All the other situations were perfectly solved by Mr Vincic in my opinion, no need for sanctions because full control and the temperature not rising. Some small issues with positioning, but overall I’m sure the large majority in football is happy with the refereeing up to now (except for the few LotG purists here on the blog).

ReplyDeleteAs a former FIFA referee, I have to wonder about some comments here. The foul in the 5th minute is clearly red. In a final, at least yellow would have been justifiable and probably accepted by the UEFA Referee Committee. Vincic's positional play is not optimal. One or the other yellow card would have been possible, perhaps even mandatory. Since the 20th minute I have the impression that he is no longer running smoothly. Maybe an injury? In the last 5 minutes, the running looked more fluid again. But he is often far away.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to my remarks: I always like to follow this blog. But some make comments here because I often have to ask myself: Which league do you whistle? If you have not led games in such a league yourself, at least the criticism should remain appropriately fair and factual.
DeleteI'm grateful you're no longer a FIFA referee, if you say a foul on Rode is a red card it means you're at least 20 years already retired :) Too harsh for a red card, a yellow card it's expected but no card with an explanation from Vincic its supportable for me and players from both teams accepted. I agree about Vincic's fatigue (which affects the positioning) of Vincic, looks like he's not fit today, Vincic rarely has bad positioning. He looks very tired with his run today, hopefully the game doesn't continue in extra time.

By making such high challenge with studs shown he doesn't care for the safety of an opponent. And as the contact occured and caused severe bleeding, it has to be classified as endangering the safety of an opponent -> red card to be shown.

ReplyDeleteI mean he wasn't perfect, but until now nobody at all is complaining about Vincic. Yes, it's an fairly easy match but he's in total control. If he doesn't have to take a major decision in the next 30 minutes, nobody will complain about the referee tonight.

DeleteI agree with you. But what do you think he, the teams, the fans, comitee and the media would prefer. If he issues 5 more yellow cards, it doesn't necessarily lead to more control, but it might lead to the game being more hectic. High boot on Rode should've been a yellow card, but besides from that, I think he had a great approach until now.

Apart from the political factors, isn't it obvious Gil Manzano is just Spain's No. 3, when Lahoz and DCG retire, his fate will be the same as Massa's when Orsato retired, the appointment was purely for political reasons, not qualities. When we talk about politics and qualities, of course the main candidates for Super Cup are between Soares Dias, Jovanovic, Schaerer, and Oliver, I think it is quite hard to see Spanish or Italian referees because of their qualities, I still believe qualities are still considered.

DeleteVery short comment about Vincic: it is all about the personal idea of refereeing, as very often it's happening in commenting such games and especially finals. Yesterday he added the classic lenient style to the "final" concept and tht result was what we discussed. For me, the card at beginning is absolutely mandatory and technically an observer can't close eyes. However, should be - 0.10 I think, not a crucial mistake for UEFA. But according to book, Euro Soccer Referee is right, is red card. The rest was OK, but a strict observer could still ask for more cards in other situations (this is the same speech of many previous games he officiated). About the penalty appeal: I agree, not enough to whistle, but I just support, grey area, all decisions would have been OK to me.
ReplyDeleteSo in reality I think he could get 8.3, that is 8.4 - 0,1 as said, (even committee can't close eyes for early missed YC), mark by book 7.9, mark by book + strict observer 7.8. The most important thing nowadays is to close without issues and indeed today Italian newspapers give him a good mark. Personally I think that refereeing has strongly changed nowadays and all is made by teams and not referees, we all are allowed to be again this new trend but we can do nothing. We can just maybe praise who still tries to issue a card in an "unexpected context".
Well-balanced evaluation. It was not Vincic's very bad performance and not against the regulations! The performance was correct taking the referee's modern style, the final match, the weather (including humidity), and the nationality of the participants into consideration!

The main loint of refereeing is that after the game, nobody speaks about referee. The media, the teams… nobody talk about vincic’s performance, about his “mistakes”. He has the match fully under control, he has authority. You must be leader on the pitch, you must managing the match, not whistling by laws of the game. ReplyDeleteOk, I was waiting for LaLiga appointments for this last matchday before making a final prediction on who will be the selected referee for the WC. With that released now, I'm confident that Mateu Lahoz will be the first spanish referee (in a while or ever, I don't really know) to attend two WC.

First of all, I would discard Gil Manzano. He's starting to gain importance in Europe this season, but that is (IMO) a preparation for the future without Mateu and del Cerro. He's 38 right now and has at least 1 more chance to attend a WC if he reaches the required level, maybe 2.
Second, between Mateu and del Cerro, the one of them not selected was very likely "invited" to retire. More specially for Del Cerro, who is one year older and already over the age limit (you might have read that the age limit has been abolished, but that seems more like a special derogation for things like the WC or EURO than a Premier League referees-over-50 approach. Otherwise, Estrada would have not retired last season). Also, it is somehow a tradition that a good referee that is retiring does so in a significant stadium, with not a really important game (if possible) and surrounded by people close to him.
The appointments for the last two match days in LaLiga fit that tradition mostly for Del Cerro. Mateu was appointed in MD 37 in Cádiz (crucial relegation match) against Real Madrid, with his usual LaLiga team, so not a really important stadium in Spain, with a regular observer, and not really surrounded by his closest people (apart from Pau Cebrián who is always his AR1. His AR2, while being from Valencia too, has only been with him for this season).
In MD38, Del Cerro has been appointed for a significant game (Sevilla - Athletic), in which the only point that doesn't fit is that Athletic is fighting for a Conference League Spot. Sevilla is qualified for UCL and is only fighting with Atlético for the third place, which does not provide any benefit over the fourth apart from some money. He could have been appointed to any of the very important relegation games, but those matches are for Sánchez Martínez, Hernández Hernández and Soto Grado. It is a very important stadium in Spain (the EL final was played there yesterday), with two big teams, and his full team includes both Juan Carlos Yuste and Roberto Alonso instead of Gonzalo García, who is his regular AR in LaLiga) and an observer from Madrid too. Sounds a lot like a farewell. On the other hand, Mateu Lahoz has been sent on tour to referee two finals in two days, so it doesn't really sound like a good bye with his family and all that present. So, based on all that, I think that Mateu Lahoz has been selected for the WC.
And while I was typing all this, it got confirmed... so congratulations, Toño!! And I'm sorry for Carlos del Cerro, but for me, the decision is fair based on performance and quality.
