  1. This time all the choices are indeed very clear, differently from the past. Maybe the fact that this tournament will take place so close to WC was a reason for that.
"We would have liked to give you some games more but leet's wait next tournament in a short time" I can imagine Collina or Busacca saying that to the officials.
First time in recent times with two referees from UEFA, Taylor and Kovacs, the first thing we can underline is that both will officiate games for sure, because, given the "nature" of the call, it is impossible to think that they will stay without games. Especially the Romanian. So this is how in a way FIFA "justified" the appointment of Frappart at WC in spite of a more experienced referee like Kovacs.
Also, FIFA seems to have now more flexibility regarding the confederations, two UEFA referees and nobody from OFC. Neverhteless, this is not the first time that a confederation is missing.
Continuity for Matonte, Ma Ning and Barton.
Third Club World Cup for Ghorbal and now he becomes strong candidate for the final. I think he was among the first options that couldn't handle a KO game, and so you can explain why he will attend this tournament for the third time (FIFA doesn't care about this argument, they called him just to give a game). Also, we can expect all six referees appointed, I think.

    1. I do find it a bit sad that Hategan isn't there as VAR.

      Delete
    2. It is easy to make such statement, but you should remember that there is a context, all the called VARs have already attended FIFA tournaments, they are known by committee with a particular experience, it is not like a "normal selection". Then, in particular Hategan needs time before coming back at very high level even if only as VAR.

      Delete
    3. @RikB, no, it should not be. As you can see, there were selected top VARs. Hategan was not even VAR in a UCL game yet, only AVAR, even though I have to say, he does a great job as VAR in Romania. The choices for VAR are all justified. About the main referees, I will say what was said before, clearly comensation from FIFA for them, but you know what ... it is perfect like that, everyone is happy and all are suitable names for the games, I think it will be a great CWC from the point of view of refereeing.

      Delete
    4. No, but I understand the choices, that's not the thing. But I'd have liked it for Hategan to be at a FIFA-tournament.

      Delete
    5. Calm down, surely Hategan will recover and in the coming years with a view to 2026 he will be fighting 'side by side' with Kovacs :)

  3. Today there is a (heavy) topper in Belgium between Club Brugge and Anderlecht.
The competition is led by Nathan Verboomen with his regular assistants Mathias Hillaert and Ruben Wyns. The Fourth Referee is Brent Staessens. The VAR is Kevin Van Damme with Lennert Jans as A-VAR

    2. Verboomen was excellent in my opinion. This WE, Van Driessche missed a mandatory RC, just like Visser did last week (both errors confirmed by Frank De Bleeckere). The 2 new FIFA refs, Lothar D'hondt and Jasper Vergoote, both are very young and very promising. Who will, if ever, become the first Belgian UEFA elite referee after De Bleeckere ?

I think that Fulham`player stepped first on the foot of Newcastle`s defender and only after that he was fouled. So, wrong decision by match officials? For me - yes. "Good thing" that the penalty was missed and media+fans focus more on the failed execution. Please someone find a better video link:

  7. For sure an easier (and better) game for De Burgos Bengoetxea in his Supercopa final Clásico compared to the nightmare of 5 years ago.

Expected performance, only mistake was a missed early YC for a reckless challenge that happened outside of FoP boundaries.

  8. Excellent performance tonight by italian referee Antonio Giua in Rome-Fiorentina in Serie A. I had never heard about him before, but for sure he had a good game. In the 23rd min of the 1st half he sent off Dodo who received his 2nd yellow card absolutely correct. I also liked a double-warning + double-yc in 56' minute. Well done Mr. Giua.

    1. A very pleasent suprise! This was the biggest game of his career so far, coming after a very unexpected appointment. Rocchi used his top form to give him the best and he didn't disappoint.
Nevertheless, it is still unclear why for years and years he was even more than poor so one should wait. He has a long experience as serie A and B referee in terms of year but if you look at the number of officiated games in serie A you get very suprised.
The trust by committee has been the key for him this season, while in past it looked that he had also lost motivations.
We will see the next steps, in my opinion still too early to celebrate him, but surely now I understand why many years ago he was presented as talent... he has good skills.
An excellent officiating yesterday with a correc early sending off, both yellow cards were correct, maybe a wrong YC to Roima player Smalling but then the rest absolutely amazing. Big control on the game and frequent communication with players, the double warning in 56' minute was Orsato style, he managed to do that, and thank to stadium audio, it was possible to hear him. Very convincing. Worthy of a video, maybe somebody can post it...

Sampa scores, but their player makes contact with hand while being on the floor.

Another possibility was to award PK if foul was on the line.

    2. Indeed, this end of the game in Empoli shows you once again how much difficult is to officiate in serie A, even if we are talking about a game like Empoli - Sampodoria. Now the latter team is making strong complaints and they will get a big name on next match, I'm sure. Nevertheless, Santoro was poor in this occasion. He had to whistle something live, even the handball whistled live would have solved everything because what later, wouldn't have happened. The fact that he was close, with a good view and let play on was a real problem. Then once called to monitor, the "power" of handballs made another victim... sorry to use this words, but he had also to focus on what had happened before, he could have whistled foul in favor of Sampdoria and then penalty or free kick.
Santoro had shown good performances before yesterday and Rocchi was happy about his recent trend. Now he made some steps back.

    2. Quite funny that all the other referees (apart from Al-Qaisi) handled the games in a very lenient way (according to AFC instructions) and Kovacs, especially in his second game, applied a very strict and extremely focused approach and got the final. Another proof that if your refereeing is really good, you don't have to blindly follow instructions that don't suit you - you just get another games on merit.

What is happening in whole world and especially in Europe is that female refs are being forced way too much cause of all gender equality and their rights to be in everything...

It is sad that most federations are not watching and appointing quality refs but then again,it is better ti prove that everyone is equal...

    3. Ferrieri Caputi does not have the capacity to referee a "big" game.
In this case, she loses control easily and the players don't accept her.

She also showed his low level in India.

I don't know what they saw of her, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

It is the truth and this does not have to be considered sexist.

  19. Not a positive performance by Ferrieri Caputi so far, game still going on. In particular, a very poor disciplinary display in second half, with some missed fouls. She struggled to keep control. A possible penalty was assessed as PLAY ON, supportable if you ask me, but penalty more expected decision.
Positive points seem to bereading of the game with good advantages, and firmness on protests. No issues for her is having to show YC.
Right now the player who was lucky to escape from YC twice in second haf, has been sent off. I think this should have been RC for violent conduct (stepping on opponent).

  20. Inacio Iglesias Villanueva with an open letter after the serious mistake (missed offside) in Cadiz - Elche:

    https://rfef.es/es/noticias/carta-abierta-del-arbitro-asistente-de-var-ignacio-iglesias-villanueva

After what happened in the Cádiz-Elche match on matchday 17 of the La Liga and the subsequent outcome of comments, criticisms and speculations on this subject, I have felt the need, with the support of the CTA, to write this letter to express my feeling. It is simple and difficult at the same time to pronounce these words, as well as obvious and painful: I did a mistake.

I don't feel like using a hackneyed speech to say things like: we all make mistakes, the players, the coaches... I prefer to write from the absolute sincerity of what I feel and without falling into victimhood since it is something I hate.

And what I feel is anger, anger, pain and annoyance with myself for the mistake made.
I also feel that a mistake serves to tarnish and harshly criticize the work carried out by the CTA and all my fellow referees where professionalism, honesty, demand and self-criticism is the only way to understand our profession.

I am sorry that a bad decision of mine has harmed Cádiz CF and I apologize for this to the club and its fans, where they have always treated me with great respect.

I feel that the honesty and independence of the referees and their decisions are questioned every weekend, almost daily. Since I dedicate myself to this profession I have never received the slightest suggestion or interference of any kind in this regard. Doubting the latter generates a climate of mistrust and tension that is impossible for the development of our work, which I believe no one in Spanish football deserves.

And I'm sorry and I don't understand that this has been used to talk about and criticize other issues related to the RFEF that have nothing to do with the mistake made. I dedicate myself to refereeing and my only interest is to improve and try to do my job well like any worker in any company.

I am an athlete and I accept when I fail and in this case the mistake was mine, no one else's. The CTA provides us with the necessary tools to carry out our work in the best possible way and we have to make decisions. I did a mistake, there is no more reading than that.

Finally, I am not in favor of referees talking about play or explaining mistakes, but surely due to the exceptionality of the situation, the fans and football this time deserved it. The one who has lost the most in this story is me, but, I repeat, no one can question the honesty of the Spanish referees or mine after so many years of involvement and professionalism.

    ______

I can only say: chapeau to Iglesias Villanueva.

    1. Maresca has completed the process of turning into a "modern referee"... especially in such big games. If I think again about his old style, well, that's incredible. But this is what today clubs and fans want to see. So far a good performance, the old referee we knew would have already booked some players, now he is working with full dialogue to players, being accepted.

  36. Juventus - Atalanta 3-3
Very difficult game, but a rather dissapointing performance by Livio Marinelli. I invite Chefren to provide the details.

Very lucky Di Maria here, if there was a slightly slower referee instead, he would have seen a straight RC and get a consistent suspension.

    1. Too much leniency,at some point he reminded me of Inaki Vicandi or Anderson Daronco.

I mean he choose to not issue card at any given moment,if murder was about to happen he would just issue warning to the killer.

No authority,I mean you saw on the clip right there, but not just that, through whole match he struggled.

Scene and sequence that best ilustrates him in this match is last 2 YC's,where he choose at first not to show it for late foul, but then when Chiesa kicked the ball at the player who fouled him then he decided to use common sense.

Missed clear penalty,VAR had to intervene there.

If that's the type of performance he will always be at,the big games are not for him.

    2. Watched parts of the game too and what I saw was unconvincing. Because of his disclipinary line match control slipped away at times. In the end he had no other option than to book the player that fouled Chiesa although he clearly had idea of not to book originally. Doesn't give a good image and as M said this sequence is really descriptive of his match.

Di Maria escaping without any sanction was unbelievable. I wonder did he actually realize that Di Maria grabbed his shirt...

    3. I am in principal a fan of lenient referees, but that was way too much.
Compared to that doveri is very strict in giving fouls and cards.

    4. Indeed you said already everything, nothing to add. This was the very first big game I would say for Marinelli, in a particular scenario, with Juventus coming from the disciplinary punishment. Orsato was fourth official to help him, but he was very disappointing. We can't talk about high threshold for whistling fouls, he just didn't want to whistle anything as personal choice. I can confirm that because he did the same in same previous games like Fiorentina - Napoli some months ago, but this time even more blatant. This is not officiating but just making a weird choice to make it easy. I'm really sorry to say that because at first glance I liked him. Rocchi wanted to promote him FIFA referee, but now we can say that it was impossible to happen. Still something missing or to say it better, he can't handle some games if he wants to do in this way. The very particular thing is that a few years ago he wqas a totally different referee, like Maresca, issuing many cards and being very harsh with players, now, you can also see Di Maria incident grabbing his shirt from behind, he has changed and he is even weak regarding this aspect... really sorry but yesterday performance belongs to the worst we ever saw in recent times in serie A. Apart from the clear penalty missed, I think he had to whistle another one at the beginning for holding and then almost all minor fouls during full game, missed.

    5. Would bei Interesse in your opinion also to freekick before third Juventus Goal.
I fehlt that while he did not give in whole of the Game clear and obvious Fouls, this was a soft freekick. Usually Not wrong but, but according to His line a Bit strange

Penalty awarded by Jesus Gil Manzano for seemingly no reason at all. Dreadful review from the VAR official Xavier Estrada Fernández. A UEFA Elite referee really should be rejecting this review.

We know that Lahoz would have done.
