  1. Full teams will be added soon. Meanwhile, about Italy it is surely a big success for Di Paolo to be there, after a very hard work as domestic VAR, now immediately in FIFA radar with a chance to attend 2026 World Cup if things will go well. The best Italian Video Match Official in recent times.

  2. First observation has to be that there are two less UEFA referees, while every other number of referees is the same as in 2019.
Furthermore FIFA completely focussed on new names. I think, only Schärer and Kim are returning to U20WC - in different roles though.
There even is no referee from the U17WC 2019.
The most surprising names on the list are probably Falcon and Abatti, who came on the FIFA list in 2022 resp. 2023 and have little resp. no international experience.
For UEFA, the five names could be expected - at least if one want to exclude older candidates like Mariani.
Rumsas chosen above e.g. Eskas and Pinheiro could be for geographical reasons - or he is simply ahead in FIFA's eyes.

  3. Also worth noting, that the selected officials won't be available for CL/EL/ECL finals and probably also SF 2nd legs.

  6. I have read some reports, and Qatar would be the alternative venue for the tournament in the event that Indonesia withdraws but Qatar will request that the tournament be held in November, but the U17 World Cup will be held in November in a venue yet to be defined because the government of
Peru ruled out holding the tournament due to infrastructure problems.

Incredible, we have 2 world cups in the air

  9. At this point is all but confirmed that Argentina will host the tournament on the initially scheduled date, Infantino had a meeting today with Conmebol president in which the official bidding was submitted.

  10. OT: Very particular last-second penalty situation in Chelsea-Lyon WCL QF last night, maybe someone has a video.
2 minutes injury time, foul happens at +1:40, not given by the referee, then awarded at + 4:00 after OFR.
The referee then decided to allow only the shot itself and therefore sent all other players to the halfway line (like at a PSO).
IMO a questionable choice as the foul happened still inside the indicated injury time.
Furthermore I am not convinced, that it was a clear and obvious mistake to play on in the first place.

    2. My view:

      I) Regarding foul/no-foul: a tricky situation. Pro penalty arguments: attacking player controls the ball and defending player challenges an opponent, leg contact is clear, the fall is caused by this leg contact. Against penalty arguments: on the 'from behind' replay, we can see the attacking player leans on the defending player like she was looking for the contact (but could also be a natural movement to win the physical challenge). I'm sure the views will be much divided even between top referees. More technical arguments pro penalty but one's feeling perhaps says something different.

II) This is the problem with OFRs after which the decision is changed - should the referees add the lost time starting from the moment the offence occured (as the subsequent play is not relevant) or starting from the moment they are called for OFR. I'm not sure this topic was deeply addressed by the (UEFA) instructors.

      Delete
    3. Agree on everything you said Philipp, I think never clear and obvious mistake, and in my opinion the intervention by Strukan is wrong. If you justify it, you must say that for all contacts there must be a penalty. Here the minute of the game and the fact that it could have been crucial, raised the focus bar by VAR. In addition, not clear why after the shot game should have ended, because the foul had occurred when at least 15 seconds were missing before the end of added time.
About this last aspect, I would say things are not clear, one should say that what happened later didn't exist because VAR intervention then cancelled it by returning back at penalty, so some seconds were still to be played... poor management by Martincic.
About VAR interventions, we must say that committee has clearly allowed "different levels" of VARs, based on the competition.
The selected pool of "Elite VAR" mostly in Champions League, then a sub-range of further trusted officials from some "major" countries and then the last level with all the rest of VARs. It seems as for the games with latter appointments, committee doesn't care at all about decisions, having a VAR is already enough, but in my personal opinion in terms of consistency this can't work and it is absolutely unfair.

    4. IMO never VAR stuff, for me more play on than penalty. I am shocked

  15. OT: LaLiga promotion playoffs appointments (semi-final, 1st legs, both played in June 3rd)

    18:30 Eibar - Alavés
David Gálvez Rascón - Guillermo Santiago Sacristán, Marcos Cerdán Aguilar - Saúl Ais Reig
[Iosu Galech Apezteguía, Óliver de la Fuente Ramos)

    21:00 Albacete - Levante
Mateo Busquets Ferrer - Josep Bordoy Homar, Asier Pérez de Mendiola González de Durana - Álvaro Moreno Aragón
[Iñaki Vicandi Garrido, Alejandro Quintero González)

Two very different profiles. Gálvez Rascón (1981) is in his 3rd season in 2nd tier, but unless he gets promoted this will be his last match, as he reaches the age limit. Very experienced referee, ideal for these kind of playoffs. Busquets Ferrer (1993) is a young & talented referee who has managed to be selected for the playoffs in his very first season in the category. I don't think he will get promoted to LaLiga this season unless he does a masterclass in his game, but he's definitely LaLiga (and possibly FIFA) material.

Really unbelievable to me; he is only 38 y.o. and, a part last WC, he has a brilliant international carrier despite he doesn't belong to UEFA or COMNEBOL. It's a pity. World refereeing has three different speeds or classes: Uefa and Comnebol where you have best referees, Arabian countries where money and politic reasons give a privileged road and the rest of the world

      Delete
    4. For some reason, Australian top referees tend to retire early... remember former WC referees Shield and Ogston who also retired unexpected early?

      Delete
    5. Ben Williams as well.
Regarding Beath, hard to make a statement without knowing his reasons.
Maybe he felt, he achieved everything with being at the WC, but on the other hand he could have had a more successful tournament in 2026 - and would also have been a leading candidate for the Asian Cup final next winter and coming AFC CL finals.

      Delete
    6. Fully agree with you Philippe. He had still some prestigious targets to achieve in form of him

      Delete
    7. I tried to post about this some months ago but not many people seemed to care. Beath took an extraordinary amount of time off after the World Cup, some 2 months without refereeing and it wasn't because of injury. His treatment at the World Cup clearly affected him. I know he put in a lot of effort to get to that World Cup, including Olympic and Club World Cup Finals so when he only got one game at the World Cup I'm sure he was really disappointed. If you look at the amount of A-League games he's done this season it's less than every other FIFA referee in Australia except for one. So no I'm not surprised at all that he's retiring. He will be refereeing his 4th A-League Final in a row as his send off in the A-League. His last involvement in professional refereeing will be at the Women's World Cup where he will act as a VAR.

The game that he will be in charge of Saturday is: Unirea Ungheni – Corvinul Hunedoara, in the first leg of one of the five finals for promotion from 3rd League in 2nd League. Of course, not a big game, but a huge step forward. His European colleague FIFA Assistant Referee Sebastian Gheorghe will be AR1.

    5. How can you say too old to come back at the top?
Still 42 years old and if he starts with good performances, with his background, he can get quick important games by UEFA.
In the "worst" case, I think a year will pass for coming back to very top, but it can be absolutely done, where is the problem? Committee strongly needs Elite referees from very "neutral" countries...

The pitch like the h*** of Infantino :))
Is it really true this is major tournament? I think the host replacement issue was really an excuse. How it possible almost all KO-game played only in 1 stadium. We don’t even talk yet about very poor performance showed by many officials and average attendance was very low in many match. One of the worst tournament so far and of course this tournament will be forget it except Argentina crowned again :))

    ReplyDelete
  19. Argentina was defeated by Nigeria yesterday, kinda unfortunately for my taste because I expected Sánchez Martínez to have 'their' QF. Nyberg seemed quite good from what I saw (I watched the 1H fully, then some bits of the 2H)

Now, there will be two UEFA vs Conmebol clashes in QF (Italy vs Colombia & Brazil vs Israel) and FIFA have a problem, I think we'll see either two Concacaf officials there (Ortiz & Calderón) or one of them in BRAISR & break confederal neutrality in COLITA. Only African & Asian referees available are Arabic (Marouf, Al-Hoaish, Falahi, the rest due to their FO appointments in R16 & their mistakes in GS seem like they are going home) so an appointment for an Israel game would be politically untenable. This, or one of the Arabics gets the huge COLITA.

There is a political storm surrounding the best referee in the world, the Polish Szymon Marciniak. Appointed to the Champions League final between Inter and Manchester City on 10 June in Istanbul after having refereed the Argentina-France World Cup final on last December, he is in serious danger of being replaced for having participated in the demonstration of a political party, known for xenophobic, homophobic, racist and anti-Jewish positions.
UEFA has already asked Polish referee for clarifications.

    1. Do you really think that UEFA could replace him? With whom?

    2. Today every right-wing political party is called by opposition xenophobic, homophobic, racist, fascist and so on. Those who talk the most about tolerance have the least tolerance for the views of others. Where is the tolerance for political views of Marciniak? Or where are proves that this party is really xenophobic or anti-Jews?

    5. I think it's not worth our time to figure out what the political beliefs of the political party or Marciniak really are, because that shouldn't be relevant. UEFA referees should be very careful not to participate in political demonstrations of any kind (well, I suppose other than the ones that UEFA themselves incite). If the story is true, it is incredibly foolish by Marciniak to take part in such an event mere days before the Champions League Final. It would sum up a lot about his career...

    1. Mourinho should retire also for this?

      Delete
    2. That's a thing UEFA should prevent on its logistics/travel plans FFS...

Disgraceful behaviour. Remember that almost 20 years ago, massive violence & harassment from the fans instigated by Mourinho provoked the early retirement of Frisk.

      Delete
    3. The excellent Frisk… sure thing he retired because of Mourinho. If this blog goes on, we may discover that Mourinho was behind 9/11

      Delete
    4. Almost forgot that @Quilava! Funny enough Frisk had some issues also with Roma in a couple of circumstances. Looks like history repeats

      Delete
    5. @Anonymous, I know it is strong to say, but I think that Mourinho with his behavior allows such things to happen, because he is a very charismatic man and all Roma fans this season, despite of a very poor outcome in serie A, were always at his side, regardless of the results he achieved. He is able to shift the focus ALWAYS on referees.
He indirectly destroyed some serie A referees appointed by Rocchi for Roma, the consequence of that was that on last matchdays only certain referees were allowed to officiate the team. I think this situation is unacceptable, but yesterday Rosetti and UEFA contributed to allow him everything once again (without a deserved sending off from the bench) and now you have this situation.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous, you can't deny that Mourinho has been contributing a lot to this environment where people think they have a right to harass and even throw stuff at referees just because they feel they've been robbed or whatever. Of course he can't control what other people do, and I don't think he condones this behaviour either, but he has a large part to play because of his role as a manager and an idol for a lot of people

      Delete
    7. Chefren, there have been fans against referees even without Mourinho, and always will be in case of disgraceful performances. In the last years, Roma suffered from many errors - Skomina with Liverpool, Cakir in Porto, Makkelie in Barcelona, Collum with Leverkusen just to mention the most famous ones - and after yesterday match fans can feel frustrated. Here everyone agreed about a good performance, but still I saw no comments about the missed red cards for Rakitic and Lamela.
It’s true, Mourinho is deviating the focus, from Taylor’s errors to Mourinhos behaviour…

      Delete
    8. Yes, it is possible that fans would act the same even without Mourinho behavior, but he doesn't renounce in putting fuel on fire. He did this thing too many times, he insulted all referees, don't you think that a more appropriate behavior should be seen from the Portuguese?
Then, let me add, personally I think that the very old Mourinho didn't do that because he had very strong teams, and t was maybe easier to win for him, now he has accepted to train teams with less top players and so he must find a reason for which he doesn't achieve what he did in past... so he does that.

      Delete
    9. For sure a more appropriate behaviour is desirable.
Manners are wrong for sure, but can we talk about pure content? Can I finally get an answer about Rakitic, Lamela, even Matic 2YC? Was Taylor really so good?
Mourinho might be the only reason why UEFA will back Taylor, because he was not good yesterday

If Taylor had given red card to someone from the Roma's bench. We dont need to talk about that. It was a circus what Mourinho and his team made and you have seen only 10% on Televsion what happened. I was in the stadium nearby of the Roma's bench. It was a joke what happened. Huge respect to Oliver too.

    12. Old proverb, twee juristen drie meningen, you can’t read the law just by letterlijk, law is the art of interpretation. So when the outcome was split into two different argument the first objective rules is do not attack personally, or in terms of football you can’t make an excuse with something that on paper the most objective ones but in reality it could be the most subjective excuses. Taylor surely didn’t show excellent performance in terms of technical last night, but remember we must include another variables that impossible to be seperated (this is variables that a fans oftem forget and reject it), in this case atsmosphere and difficulty of the game, impossible to refereeing perfectly, a match with a team like Atletico or Roma with their manager. You can clearly saw what happened to Siebert, not all referee can survive in that kind of clash, and simply Taylor survived.

    13. 22:07 -Juan

      Delete
    14. How can you say that he survived...

Ok,maybe that's the case, but he survived with consequences.

For sure he will not be given to handle Roma matches till the end of his career, maybe even all Italian clubs...

Siebert waited year until he was again appointed for some Spanish team, but remember,Italian media is much different, much worse and does not forgive or forget this .

Also difference between this and Siebert's match is that the stakes were a lot higher in Taylor's match, therefore I do not see that Italians and their media will ever forget this.

      Delete
  22. BTW Italian teams mean always big troubles for UEFA.
If the main target of Rosetti & Co. is always that, first of all, nobody should talk about the referee after the game, the first final has been a nightmare. They could even accept an extremely poor technical performance, but if no problem with teams, who cares...
In addition, now we have this news about Marciniak...well.. let's hope for the best.

    1. I must disagree here: Taylor and Oliver already had Roma this year and I can’t remember any protest - they simply did not do any mistake earlier, differently from yesterday

      Delete
    2. But of course, one must be extremely careful, that this doesn't lead to "in doubt for the Italians" in order to avoid controversies.
So if Rosetti's conclusion of the EL final was, that it would have been better if Roma had won, because then he would have a calmer week, this would be highly problematic...

Any result not in favor of Roma will be used to point the fineer to Taylor ( or any other ref) However Rosetti and co have already started this special treatment for PSG and Italian teams years ago and now the problem is to big to be solved im afraid. Not good for the picture of refereeing as a whole

Interesting that VAR checked during the OFR the offside of the player, this should have done before, very slow, but still...
Then coming into the decision, for me not clear, never clear and obvious mistake regarding this handball.
Again, a classic FIFA use of the tool.

  25. If Marciniak is replaced, it should be by a referee who is not very likely to get the UCL final (e.g. Dias or Zwayer), you cannot give it to Makkelie or Kovacs, who are likely to get it soon, and they deserve a final in which they are first choice. I’d rather see someone get it twice, but that’s unlikely of course

    3. @matei14, because the UCL final is the highlight of a career, and a referee deserves to have the feeling to have achieved this 100% by himself. If you are a replacement (you clearly are the second choice), it will be perceived as less of an achievement. Therefore I think those who have high chances in the near future (which are, in my opinion, Makkelie and Kovacs, maybe Vincic and Gil Manzano) should be saved, so they can really achieve the final by themselves.

Brescia relegated to serie C after 38 years caused this reaction by fans, but more generally Italian football is becoming very, very poor and weak, controlled by fans. FIGC is not strong to take extremely unpopular decisions.

  32. Very weak statement by Marciniak. He does not respond to the question of whether he spoke at this event or not. This is for me an indicator, that these allegations are true (otherwise he would have denied it). If he spoke at this event, his career must be over. You cannot say "respect is on the pitch very important for me“ and outside the pitch you participate at extremist movements.

  34. I might be one of the few who actually cared to check about the event that Marciniak attended. Contrary to what media says, it wasn't a political event of any kind, just a symposium of economists, consultants and entrepreneurs. That Konfederacja politician that spoke at the event wasn't even presented as such, his introduction says: "The most popular tax advisor in Poland, economist, and recently also TikToker. He runs the fastest growing consulting company in Poland. Author of books and columns, creator of a channel on YouTube and other social media. His publications break popularity records every month."

    Link to their website: https://everest23.pl/

So, removing Marciniak from the final for this would be outrageous.

    1. But, the most important question for me would be if the Konfederacja politician is the organizer of the event or merely a guest, just like Marciniak. If only a guest, I don’t see a problem either, if (part of) the organization, IMO we (or UEFA) do have an issue to address.

  36. Last year, we witnessed a UEFA match with 22 players kneeling against racism before the game. 22 (!) players except the referee. Guess who? Yep, Marciniak.

So, I can't say I'm surprised by reading the allegations.

Agree with Unknown user above - the content of his speech is not relevant. More relevant is who organised the event. I find his statement very weak as he didn't deny being a guest at the event.

In every country you have extreme right (fascistic) politicians. As an official, you don't want to be mentioned in the same breath. Period! A story like this always starts leading its own life and the players in the final will also read this. How stupid!

    1. Kneeling before a game is a symbol of an organization who has leaders that openly say they are marxists. Marxism is something more dangerous than right-wing political parties. Polish NT players and Marciniak team know that and dont do that. Marciniak was first referee in Poland that used anti-racist procedure, 2018/19 campaign he stopped game Lechia-Piast. And now he is called racist by an organisation that gave the title antifascist of the year for a guy that consciously infected HIV many womens.

I always enjoy here to read comments about referees' performances, a pity that now have to write explaing such things.

What impact did kneeling even had?

You even saw some players like Zaha,Alonso,Toney refusing that procedure.

You saw what mess was happening when Coltescu called Demba Ba black...

Game being delayed, played tomorroe, different referee and his crew,so many procedures...

Come on now, sensitive as sensitive can get .

Let me even more digress here?l...

What impact did BLM had in the entire world?
We all know when was that brought on as a problem and who benefited from that.

      And to answer on this statement;

"and football organisations are struggling to ban racism and homophobia in a proper way..."

You saw in Ligue 1 where 5 muslim players did not want to wear colorful numbers and they were punished for that...

      Why?

Cause they represent their culture that bans this tradition?

      Something's wrong with that?

Everyone has their own beliefs and their rights and we have to respect that.

We all respected kneeling procedure, but what impact seriously did it had?

If any sport is doing something and getting something done about racism and homophobia,it is football.

Italy and Spain are still lacking for that race problem, but they are also advancing...

Heck, even gender rights are almost equal.

You see female refs, you see some women teams being paid exactly as mens, even though their income is not as high as men's.

What I'm trying to say is that some people will makr something out of nothing, and that's exactly what happened with Marciniak's case.

  41. The Polish Football Association immediately took steps to clarify the circumstances of Szymon Marciniak's participation in the conference, which was also attended by politician Sławomir Mentzen.

Szymon Marciniak provided PZPN with extensive explanations of the situation. They show that he does not know Sławomir Mentzen and has never spoken to him. After talking to the arbitrator and getting acquainted with the collected evidence, PZPN rejects any accusations directed at Szymon Marciniak.

According to our information, Marciniak took part in the "Everest" business meeting as an invited speaker. During the conference, he gave a 40-minute presentation on motivation. The meeting took place on May 29 in Katowice. The entire conference was attended by 12 guests. Immediately after his performance, Szymon Marciniak went to Warsaw, where he took part in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa Gala which ended the football season.

The materials we have collected show that political rallies organized by Sławomir Mentzen took place on other dates and in other cities. Combining the presence of Szymon Marciniak at a business meeting with political rallies organized by Sławomir Mentzen, with which our judge has nothing to do and from which he completely cuts himself off, is incomprehensible.

In the case of this type of accusation, such as those directed at Szymon Marciniak, objectivity and presentation of the arguments of each side are always required. In this case, it was missing and Marciniak was unjustly accused, he was not given the opportunity to explain and defend himself.

The Polish Football Association and our referees are apolitical. We hope that UEFA will take into account the obvious facts we have quoted above in making its decision.

    3. The entire explanation of the Polish federation comes across as very unreliable. A simple check of the politician’s instagram account suggests the Everest conference was attended by many more than only 12 people. Apart from that the politician involved states that “he was able to get Marciniak to the event”, which suggests Marciniak does know the politician involved, at least to some extent.

I’m not drawing any conclusions with regard to Marciniak having done something wrong, but I do doubt the accuracy of the Polish federation’s statement and their intentions in this matter.

    7. And here the other ‘accused’ Unknown with a few words to HRH Mr Mikael. We haven’t seen or heard from you the last couple of days, while there actually was quite a lot to discuss, but never mind. Now however you do seem to find it relevant to enter the room to accuse me of trying get Marciniak’s final taken away from him. In none of my comments have I stated that the final must be taken from Marciniak, none!

I did post a couple of comments, yes, could be 4-5 yes, because I strongly believe there should be no place for racism, homophobia or other forms of intolerance in football. And I expect Uefa’s top referees to support and even propagate these ideas as well, when acting as representatives of Uefa and/or Fifa.

If you’d taken the time and effort to read my comments thoroughly I make a distinction between Marciniak having been at an event where the politician involved was attending only as a speaker, just like Marciniak, no big issue for me. If however he was at the event, invited by the particular politician, I do think the entire course of events should be investigated thoroughly by Uefa.

This is what I wrote in my previous reactions as well, nothing more, nothing less. Apart from that I concur with the other Unknown you accuse, do you really think Uefa gives a damn on my opinion on this blog, other opinions here, or yes, even your divine opinions?

The way you’re trying to paint me here I think is worrying, just like the way you’re acting as a blog administrator every now and then. Reflection on your own actions here wouldn’t make this a worse place.

    8. I would even broaden Unknown's arguments. It is not about Marciniak per se, it is about principles and values; it is not about the fascist, racist, antisemite politician organising this conference or not doing so. The question is whether this person's participation was a mere coincidence or that the organisation and forum belong to a certain ultra-right wing in Polish politics. If the answer is "yes", then nothing could exonerate Marciniak or excuse his participation. Moreover, even if the answer were "no", but the Polish ref. was aware of the list of participants, it would be very difficult for him to get away when so many peoples and groups all over Europe and the world at large are going to get offended or even infuriated by what could be deemed a breach of FIFA and UEFA's stated values by letting Marchiniak at the helm on June 10.
