  1. Two more QF games, candidate is Monzul? Keighley? Olofson? Mukansanga?

    1. Very unlikely for Mukansanga but consider that Frappart appointed in this stage, I can understand the base if Yamashita and Mukansanga will chosen by them.

    2. You can as she done the final 4 years ago

  2. I think we can’t exclude Frappart for the final if France are out.

    1. Really??? She did the finals 4 years ago!!! That’s the very first person you can exclude!!

      Delete
    2. This is women world cup, if you include political and experience aspects still we can’t exclude her

      Delete
    3. It will be very unjust if we don’t see Olofson again!!! Maybe she is definitely for a semi Final because appearing again in the quarter final would mean 3 UEFA officials at this stage which is very much unjust especially as I don’t see a need for Frappart!!

      Delete
    4. With all respect to her experience and ability that much better than Bastien (for me she and Letexier are 2nd best referee in France now), still she is the ultimate tool to destroy the merit, we can’t forgot about her appointment in Super Cup and FIFA Men’s world cup, so why not appoint her again on the final if they can do that

      Delete
    5. @Anonymous weather is Womens World Cup or children's World Cup, a referee cannot officiate a FIFA final back to back!! It’s impossible!! Very impossible!! There is no politics or no matter the talent you might have for that to happen!! I dare say she has better odds at even officiating the FIFA mens World Cup final than another womens World Cup final

      Delete
    6. it was paradox, I mean you can easily appoint Foster, Staubli, or Monzul for that game, do you think mentioned referee are worst than Frappart? Or do you think Frappart perform better than Koroleva/Penso/Fortunato/Carvajal that prevent them to get Japan-Sweden, both are huge clash but I don't see need to push Frappart to get final game, she already had complete achievement. We just have 6 games left, at least 1 game is already decide as give away (either for the co-host or CAF/AFC), so we have only 5 remaining and then still we have Foster, Monzul, Staubli, Koroleva/Penso, Fortunato, Keighley, and Carvajal that perform well, at least and I don't see (again) any reason to push Frappart, except it was her last game as international referee.

  3. The first observation is about Olofsson, let's see whether she will appear in a Quarterfinal, but I think that the Swedish national team made things complicated for her. Nevertheless, FIFA could have appointed her before, in a Round of 16 game.
Frappart gets another game, we can surely say that among some other things there is a lack of options because otherwise you would have many other referees.
No AFC after Yamashita, no CAF at all in KO stage.
At moment, before final, appointments seem over for CONCACAF as well.

    We can maybe say:

    QUARTERFINALS
    Olofsson, Fortunato / Carvajal

    SEMIFINALS
    Monzul, Fortunato / Carvajal

    1. The only reason is political background and favoritism, if we applied same condition the game Spain vs Netherlands, we have Alves, Penso, Welch, and Foster and we still have Staubli, Monzul, and Koroleva. For the sake of merit and neutrality IMO that game should be for Staubli/Foster and JPN-SWE is for one of the rest mentioned it.

      Delete
  4. No AFC VARs in KO stage continues: Irrati and Guzman among the most trusted. We will see UEFA and maybe CONMEBOL VARs in the other 4 games, I think. Sorry to say, but the difference between the VARs from such confederations and the others is simply abysmal.
Tatiana Guzman the only who distinguished herself, but not the others outside UEFA and CONMEBOL.

    1. Drew Fischer from Canada must be mentioned as well. He was VAR in WC semifinal after all.

      Delete
  5. Koroleva, Fortunato, Monzul and Olofsson all with 2 games in knockouts and haven’t been 4th officials in knockouts so I expect them all to have games with maybe one more repeat or possibly 2 repeats with 1 of the 4 left out.

Final is likely Penso or Jacewicz

    ReplyDelete
  6. They just love Frappart don't they. An extra game for her while other good officials miss out.

    1. She gets a extra game for a reason she is a good referee. Maybe be her last if france get through

    Alves,Monzul,olofsson,Jacewicz,Yamashita,penso

    1. Monzul and Jacewicz should be on the plane home.Monzul only gets appointed because of politics and is a very poor referee and Jacewicz has been too lenient and has allowed games to get away from her

    QF:
    AUS-FRA: Koroleva
    ENG-COL: Yamashita

    SF-F (depending on teams)
    Monzul
    Penso
    Alves Batista

    3rd place game
    Jacewicz

    1. I think this is right, with two possible (or even likely) exceptions.

First, I could see Keighley or Mukansanga slotting in on the playoff. In fact, I'd expect Mukansanga. Saves everyone a lot of face and is politically advantageous.

Second, I wouldn't slot Penso in on the semifinal or final right away. Don't get me wrong, she is better than Koroleva on most given days. But Koroleva has more of a reputation within FIFA, has the better trio, and hasn't done anything wrong. If Koroleva works a QF and does well, then I could see Koroleva working twice. It's ALSO possible that Koroleva is just held for a semifinal (a la Cunha and Orsato) and that a CONMEBOL referee (Carvajal?) gets AUS-FRA. After all, it will be weird if only one South American referee works the final 16 matches--even if that referee gets to work twice. Regardless, I wouldn't discern Penso's appointment in the R16 as meaning she is viewed as the top American--rightly or wrongly. FIFA might have just wanted to reward her and it was seen as a safe R16 match to do it on. And that would make a lot of sense if you were also expecting the USWNT to advance further than the R16.

      Delete
    2. So Carvajal did get that last possible QF and Koroleva just stayed on the QFs, too. Still think this is all going to largely check out and the final 3 referees are Alves-Monzul-[best USA referee of the two] in some combination. Mukansanga for 3/4.

      Delete
  10. Pretty unlucky for the two US refs to have five matches at the World Cup and be written off for late stage matches because they were all too easy.

I'm sure there's no other possible explanation of how all of these easy matches stayed under control...

Meanwhile we now return to your regularly scheduled CONCACAF bashing.

I really don’t know why people keep saying there is bias or ‘CONCACAF bashing’ on here. There have been lots of varied comments on here. I, for one, have said how well a number of officials have done and (even with Collina!!) it’s surely a non-uefa turn, with lots of good performances. USA in particular has a longer tradition in women’s football and both US refs did very well imo. I think Keighley is an excellent referee, with lots of experience and good performances. The Japanese referee is obviously well liked, if slightly over-rated for me. If uefa do get it again, I think Olafsson or Foster. I’m a bit fed up with Frappart appointments - she’s not stood out and fifa is never going to develop new talents if you keep obsessing over one referee who, frankly, has had her turn - lots of refs have had good performances and are available and should not be overlooked.

    2. Arbitre Anglais8 August 2023 at 19:28

+ Politically though, CONMEBOL has perhaps more sway. Not as big a tradition in women’s football as USA, but have had two very strong performers in Carvajal and Fortuna. They equally have a chance and definitely deserve a KO game somewhere, more than Alves did.

      Delete
  11. I am highly surprised at the fact that most of you repeat the same names over and over. But very few of you are mentioning Cheryl Foster. If there has been a UEFA referee that has done very well (better than her UEFA counterparts) and is deserving of more. It's her.
Seeing Frappart's name again, in all honesty, makes me want to vomit. At this point, just give her every single effin' match and have the rest of the referee's act as her support crew.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Frappart is the best women referee ever!!! when another women referee work half than she… you can speak! this is a fact and the trust that comite have on her is based on all she show until now. just accept the true

      Delete
    2. i agree! its not fair to see Frappart all the time, even if she is great and expirienced. But she comes from a country that is very privileged and that lets women work in that job! Ivana Martincic would be great too but she doesnt get the support from her country. Give her games, let her gain expirience! im sure on the way there she would already lead games really well!

      Delete
    3. I also hope Foster gets another game. Unfortunately I feel the fact that she haven't been tested could rule her out even though that would not be very fair on her. Maybe FIFA rate Frappart's experience highly and feel that just a few games below par, but certainly not terrible, should prevent her from get the big games, but that is not really fair on the other referees that are here and have put in better performances than her, and also considering Frappart already have done the final, I don't think she would be devasted if FIFA decided to give those games to other referees

      Delete
    4. In regard to the comment that Frappart is the best ever, Kari Seitz might have something to say about that. Officiated in four World Cups and four Olympic tournaments. Worked in MLS 20 years ago. Reason she never got a final is because the US was always playing. I’m fine with an argument that refereeing in Europe now is more difficult than refereeing in US 20 years ago, but Seitz was limited in her time by attitudes toward women and by the success of the US Women’s team. Just saying it is in no way obvious that Frappart is the best ever.

      Delete
    5. First of all, Seitz had 3 Olympics (not 4) and in 1 World Cup she was just a 4th official. Nonetheless, impressive career. However, when referring to best, I think we should not forget the Swiss woman Nicole Petignat, who in my opinion has been the best woman referee ever. She was passing the men's fitness test, refereeing in the top men's national league for many years, got even UEFA men's games. In an era exactly opposite than the one we are in now...not only women referees were not pushed like now, but they were not even getting the same opportunities or judgement. The football ties were against them with the mentality that women should do their own business only...

      Delete
    6. I’ve no problem with your support for Petignat. It’s definitely well supported. My point was only that it’s not a given that Frappart is obviously the best ever. I feel like there are arguments for Seitz, Petignat, Frappart, and possibly even Yamashita. I generally shy away from these arguments because there is almost never an obvious right answer, I respect them all for what they have done. Having worked regularly with one of the first female FIFA officials in the USA, I have an appreciation for what they went through in the old days. And I’m really glad to see the support they get now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Would you for once stop with idiotic comments about Collina resignation an corruption in FIFA etc. It is obvious that for some people here this is the first world cup . In every male and female World cup appointments were made as in this one, there were always referees who were protected and receieved appointments no matter what and on the other hand there were referees who received no further appointments despite their good performances, this is nothing new. Furthermore, appointments are not made individualy by Collina or Seitz but the entire Referees Committee (although Collina and Seitz probably have the final world). All in all, appointments policy in this World cup is nothing new.

    1. She has been appointed as fourth official, in such cases, it is unlikely to see the official appointed for a next stage as main referee.

  32. Would be strange if one of the Americans gets the final because that would mean England would get to the final and have 3 Americans in the knockout stage

    ReplyDelete
  33. After these appointments, the next sure choice is Monzul for a semifinal. Maybe Olofsson if Sweden will be eliminated, but less likely than the Ukrainian.
Alves Batista, despite of having been not so busy to he bonest, stays as candidate for the final, Yamashita as well.
Didn't expect Koroleva after Penso, but thinking about Nesbitt, the AR who attended Men's WC, maybe one could have guessed that this was the "most ranked" US trio among the two? Or maybe this isn't an argument at all? What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. American trio was chosen QF because they were better as assistant referees than referees.

      Delete
    2. I am not sure regarding Monzul and Olofsson. They are without game for so long (yes, I remember Cunha 2018...) and it's also quite possible that Foster, Staubli or Welch get the remaining UEFA appointment(s). If it's not simply Staubli in all cases, it also depends on the progress of SWE and/or ENG, of course.

Regarding the Americans, I think, their status is quite similar and as both performed well (and better than e.g. Beadoin), it was logical, that they both get games. The elimination of their national team maybe also helped, although their actual games are independent of that.
After Borjas' performance, they should also be the first CONCACAF candidates for a further game - probably rather Penso, if it's a SF. And Koroleva can apply for the final in ENGCOL, if not everything is already planned until the end.
However it's also possible that CONCACAF stays with 3 KO games and it is Alves, Yamashita + UEFA in the last 3 games.

      Delete
    3. There's no guessing. I've been saying forever that Koroleva's trio has more credibility with FIFA but that Penso is the better referee. Penso earned a knockout match the hard way. And Koroleva didn't do anything wrong to lose the opportunity. Once you saw Penso's performances, I think each one of them getting a KO match was a guarantee.

Now, with the US eliminated... the question is whether one of them earns a second KO match and, if so, which one it is.

      Delete

  35. I think we can easily predict that Chenard and/or Guzman will serve as VMOs on the final regardless who will be in the middle on the final.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. +1 it will be a full female VMO crew

      Delete
    2. I mean, Alves has a Brazilian female VAR with her...

That said, I don't think this is the open and shut case some might believe. There are no real "optics" of having a female VAR; at least not to the extent that they exist for the on-field officials.

I'm sure FIFA would prefer a female VMO crew. But Guzman doesn't have great mastery of English and from what I've seen in MLS, Chenard is prone to some rather big gaffes. You could end up with one of the bigger male names in the main VAR role solely because it's the best thing for the game.

    1. Let's calm down with the Frappart hate a little bit. Yes, I agree that she didn't deserve this QF, maybe not even her R16-game, however we have to be impartial and judge the performances for what they are. I think her performance today is better than the previous three, but she still lacks a bit in foul detection as she always have imo

    2. If the Referee Committee has shown to be unable to properly evaluate and judge their referees. Why should we be any different?
So far this is match is a "Cheryl Foster". It's been EASY. With only one team trying to win. While the other is afraid to lose and has chosen not to play up to their level.
I won't applaud her cautioning of the Spanish player. Any halfway decent gives that card 10 out or 10 times. I mean, it was so obvious that her not showing yellow would have been farcical. However, her decision to try to play advantage was poor. As the Dutch player wasn't in any sort of advantageous position.

    1. My thoughts exactly. Unbelievable OFR. It's a clear penalty. The only question is the color of the card.

I think it's safe to say that FIFA was very happy with the review in ENG-NGA, otherwise there's no way this would have been sent down!

    2. I mean Villarreal got another assignment. Enough said.

    3. I think an OFR for DOGSO would also be wrong in this situation, for me the touch by NED player is too heavy and the goalkeeper would be first to the ball even if the push doesn't happen

    4. I was perplexed by this OFR too, absolutely wrong one for me. IMO, it also goes against the whole doctrine of using VAR.

    1. Yeah, it is a clear handball that should really be seen live. I can understand how, given Frappart's angle, there could have been an optical illusion that it hit the chest instead. But in this case, teamwork is needed from the AR as well. Pretty bad miss on the field. At least the review was efficient.

    2. I agree, a very bad miss, especially by the AR. A penalty that has to be called live for my taste.

    3. Didn't she have a similar moment with VAR in the 2019 WWC final?

  55. OT:
Lucila Venegas has been the "referee expert" on the Spanish broadcast in the US. Needless to say, she's been worthless and has done more bad than good. She's spent most the time being a referee apologist. Always siding with the referees or making up excuses. Unwilling to say anything that could possibly indicate that the referee actually committed an error.

Horacio Elizondo has definitely been much better in the past few men's World Cup with this same broadcaster. Unafraid to speak his mind on the telecast. Heaping praise on those that deserved it. While openly criticizing and critiquing those who were bad.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Why have Assistant Referee's? If they're unwilling or unable to make calls other than offside, throw in, goal kick, and corner kick.

For a FIFA level referee and a FIFA level AR to miss such blatant and obvious handling is so poor.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hope UEFA is watching too. After this match they should absolutely reconsider her ability to arbitrate any substantial match. She absolutely has a shocker. How the nl penalty gets revoked after ofr is a total joke to me. partially biased as im dutch but still, its never a crucial mistake to me to give the penal and YC. Then she misses the hand by vd gracht. Seems like she is totally blind today.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Now at least 30 minutes more but all I can say is what an absolute s**tshow this performance have been, Frappart, ARs, VAR all below the level required. This is why you have to appoint referees on form and not just on old merits

    ReplyDelete
  60. Assistant referees can’t even get their flag signals straight. In extra time AR2 tried to signal for a Spain throw in after a Spain player played the ball out with no NED players in sight. This better be the end for the Frappert crew. Very poor job this evening. This incident just tops it all off.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I can't say I'm happty that Frappart had this performance because I'm always in favor of referees, but today must be a learned lesson by FIFA, it was clear that she didn't deserve this game after the previous performances.
Nevertheless, if they still think she is the best despite of such performance and the others would have made even worse, well, it's a different speech, but I definitely don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you replace FIFA with UEFA the same speech applies. Dont want to see a ref fail but if some refs show that they are not there based on their abilities but only because of their background (eg being rosettis favorite or italian) i wont be unhappy

  62. It’s not a perfect game, but the people posting like Frappart is walking around the pitch without a clue are ridiculous. I figure this was going to be her last game to begin with, so if she doesn’t get another game, i don’t think it’s a reflection on this performance.

The reversal on the YC and PK wasn’t a clear and obvious error. In the moment, when she didn’t call it immediately, I figure she got talked into by her AR, but im not privy to that communication, so I really don’t know. But she called it. There was a foul there, but I think you have ten officials at that level and as many as 3-4 call it in the moment. The rest don’t. It falls under the category of there really isn’t enough evidence to overturn it either way. I don’t know if I would have called it on the field, but in review, without VAR training and instruction from FIFA at the tournament, I’d like to think I confirm the call made. The review did seem to confirm her first instincts.

The handball should have been called, but I don’t know what her angle on it was,

An NBA official once said he rarely sees an official have a bad game. They sometimes have a bad two minutes here and there. This performance by Frappart reminds me of that. She’s a good official. Most of what she’s done this game is right. This isn’t someone from the rec leagues working a World Cup quarterfinal. Just had a few moments she’d probably like to have back. And they were reviewed and the decision made, so no harm. If you are angry over it, I don’t know what to say to you.

    4. You never had a game where you were less "in" with some unclear calls ? you career was short so that and maybe not at top level. A less less successful does not question all your abilities and previous achievments.

She made so many that even some ici never reached...so you can criticize technically today's performance...it's a good thing but one performance even fail does not challenge a successful career.
So stop criticizing ref who ever he/she is...just performance
Jealousy never makes other to success. She deserves to be here...now she's human and can be less efficient one match. Does it challenge final score and equity ?
she is trusted by FIFA and UEFA so i trust her. Committee must make choices so let's trust them even if you would make others choices if one day you are in committee.

    1. yes, this is how the explanations make sense...for me the question is just: is this a punishable handball^^ but okay, arm is away from the body, arm is in position already before the ball is there, those are components for unnaturally bigger...i can live with the ofr...positioning during corner was not optimal...a swedish attacker just ran in her line of vision...

  72. (Very) unrelated question: why was Sandra Braz Bastos (POR) sent to the Copa America? It's an exchange that should allow you to adapt more easily to different conditions, which would be a great experience to have at the World Cup. However, she's 45 now so this World Cup was probably her last possible tournament, but she wasn't selected. So why was she given the exchange, instead of someone who could have used this experience this tournament? Because of this, she has never been a referee at the EURO's either. Very interesting question with the current knowledge in my opinion

    ReplyDelete
  73. https://streamin.me/v/0b58e2da
The arms are very open and also moving, player is jumping yes, but that's a clear enlargment of body's volume. It is harsh, but again, my idea is that if you don't give such penalties, you can justify almost all handballs. It must be whistled for consistency.
Nevertheless, it is surely a problem that will be never solved: having different decisions based on who works at monitor, maybe another VAR woldn't have called it. So one could wonder: what is the sense of having VAR for penalty area incidents? Almost never objective stuff... and all people disagree, VAR has not been introduced for that... in my opinion somehing must change.

    1. I know it’s a penalty according to “the rules”, however this is unintentional, bounced on her hand from a very close distance. Nothing the defender can do to avoid the contact, therefore “cheap”. They really need to change the handball rule…

    2. Chefren can you please please get a video where she explains why she gives the penalty after OFR, everyone is saying it was very good communication

      Delete
    3. @11:08 It’s not a penalty according to the rules either. That’s not unnaturally bigger. If anything it’s as natural as it can be. Unnatural would be tuckning in both arms.

They don’t need to change the rule. They need to change the referees knowledge of what natural means.
