    1. No demotions, only retirements from FIFA list.

  2. Congratulations to all promoted referees. A result of hard work and dedication!

Offtopic: I would like to emphasize something that bothers me. Not every referee seems to be treated “equally" here. Examples: when Orsato gives a rather wrong penalty in PSV-Sevilla, the criticisms are soft. It is ‘soft but supportable’, while for other refs, I assume that more harsh wordings would be used. When Marciniak gives an incorrect penalty, it is a "consequence of the guidelines." That must be the biggest joke I've read here :)

Message to the admins, try to maintain neutrality here, because the blog will lose its credibility. The best way to achieve this is to appear neutral yourself, as the lead example.
I read many pro-Marciniak posts here. Even after a mistake, a long epistle is written by Admin to defend what (mentally) caused the mistake. I doubt, the same would be done if it was Zwayer, Taylor or Makkelie. As for Turpin, when he had a weak EURO, a long supportive epistle was devoted to it. It’s clear who are the favourites and who are not. Whether they are just favorites based on a style, or whether there is also contact with these referees behind the scenes... We cannot exclude that.

(Btw, the same applies to the Massachusetts forum. A lot favoritism there, while for some referees, just mistakes are highlighted.)

I think, when admins don’t appear neutral in their comments, it can also generate more opinions by people with an agenda. It’s a snowball effect. Its fine to be a Marciniak fanboy, however the fanaticism by some people to defend him after errors is absurd. In that respect, I really miss the Soham era – RIP :( - although he was a Kuipers-fan and I’m not. But you know what I mean. Back then, I found the blog more enjoyable to read and more neutral.

I trust that this message will be received well and not as an offense. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2024, where meritocracy must prevail.

    1. I mean, what do you expect from the comment section of a weblog? Surely there will be biased opinions. Your opinion is also biased, as you mention yourself that you are a Kuipers fan. I don't see anything bad in having a bias though it might seem a little weird on a blog devoted to refereeing where being neutral is very important. But expecting 100% neutrality from the readers, let alone the admins, is a bit unrealistic, let's be honest. After all this here is a place to share opinions and these are always subjective.

  3. Guida in ELITE 42 years. Shame, shame, shame for Rosetti.

  4. Only one demotion this round, and it's Triinu Vaher who got promoted just last summer. She hasn't done any games as I can see since May, so this treatment is very harsh from UEFA. I can't find anything about her being involved in some kind of other controversy that would justify this

  5. Italian favouritism stinks here. What has Guida done in the past years to merit a promotion? He's been injured for so much, and after just 6 months back without lots of eye-catching games, he is promoted. Just ridiculous.

    1. He has done 3 CL games this season as only First group referee.

  6. About Guida and the last messages by some readers, I think you can have your opinion and criticize Rosetti's work, that's of course your right. I can agree on the fact that very often Italian referees get maybe more games than others and in some occasions also sonorous games, but about this promotion, I think that you can't say this was undeserved or sometihng done because involving an Italian. Among the Category 1 referees, he was the one with the biggest experience in Champions League group stage (7 games at the end of his campaign). Add to that the fact that he got always important assignments not only in recent times, but in the years. The only thing you can discuss about his why this promotion didn't follow before, as there was all the time to do that, but you remember one year ago he had a very serious injury and maybe this was planned even before, but then it could happen only now. Also, I think they tried before with Mariani, one year younger, but this didn't work for now. Italy, among the very big federations only with two Elite referees for a long time, only based on that you could say there wasn't any particular treatment, and before Massa, Orsato was the only Elite for a short time, this never happened before. I agree that promotions shouldn't follow only due to nationality but this wasn't the case. He is not worse referee than the third French, German or Spanish Elite.
Criticisms can be made, but surely about other arguments.
I don't think that I'm saying that with Italian glasses, because the experience in UEFA game of the referee is very big. I only say, strange they decided to promote him so lat,e when in pas there was several occasions, even before the injury of one year ago.

    1. I agree with Chefren: taking everything into consideration, especially the experience Guida has acquired so far, I think it cannot be said his promotion is undeserved. Of course, his age is definitely a factor to consider, however I don't think it would be fair for something like that to prevent a referee from achieving his goals (although it happens too often). To be frank, his 3 UCL games this season, while being a Category 1 referee, as well as lack of last year's focus on Mariani (rightly so, if I may say), gave me a reason to somewhat expect his promotion this December. Of course, it's easy to talk in hindsight, however I am glad for Guida, as I deem him a good enough referee with more than enough experience, and I felt sorry for the injury which came at the critical moment for his career. It certainly cannot be said he is worse than some other Elite referees, at least for me. Of course, this is all just my personal opinion, nothing more.
