One of Turpin's team assistants "Benjamin Pages" returns in place of "Erwan Finjean".

Erwan Finjean is usually part of Willy Delajod's championship team.

Turpin is very good choice with Rozetti. Think it's trust to him in EU and next season in CL.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see Schärer there despite the possible other (french) options. But could also mean that he is a name for big CL games in the future.

Delete@Philipp: And we can also rule out the possibility that Rosetti would like to see Turpin and Schärer together with a view to a possible appearance in the EURO opening match (as someone here suggested): Since Switzerland plays in the same group as Germany, Schärer is likely to be eliminated as the fourth official there (others speculate that the game is reserved for Marciniak).
DeleteI don't see why Rosetti needs to observe the Frenchman. The only reason I can think of is indeed EURO opening game.
ReplyDeleteSure, you could say "it's a big game" and all that, but come on, Turpin is an established name, its just a 1st leg and Riley is observing the return in Madrid (probably Marciniak).
In addition, Turpin and his lenient and background-minded (managing) style would be a perfect fit in Germany vs Scotland. You don’t need Marciniak there. Rosetti/UEFA don’t want many cards (which most of us fairly criticize), however in that case Turpin is a good referee to set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

DeleteLast friday news came out that Dick van Egmond, head of refereeing in The Netherlands, will step down from office after this season. It is not yet known who will be his successor. Will be interesting to see who will the new man in office. From my perspective it will be unlikely that Björn Kuipers will step in. He has his personal companies and UEFA work.
ReplyDeleteI think Kevin Blom will step in. I hope for him he can officiate one or two matches at the end of the season after having been out for a long time. After that he could be a good head of refereeing. He's a good communicator, big experience with VAR and he's been a referee since 2004 or so...

ReplyDeleteTamas Bognar is delegated for the crucial game in Croatian league Rijeka-Dinamo (2nd vs 1st, 1 point difference), on sunday 19:30 CET.
Media report that it was supposed to be Marciniak and Polish FA agreed, but UEFA stopped it because they count with him for SF matches in European competitions next week.
Also, according to the article, because of EURO referees being unavailable and many of the best referees being busy in their domestic competitions, probably in the cup final (2 games) Croatian referees will be appointed.
I have nothing against Tamas Bognar and I wish him best of luck Sunday, but from asking for Marciniak to receiving Bognar is a huge downgrade. If this is such an important game, are the Croatians pleased with the referee chosed? Even if we exclude the referees with European assignements these two weeks they should have been able to find to invite a bigger name.

DeleteMasterclass refereeing by Turpin tonight. Of course, you have to be lucky that there are not any doubtful or "so so" situations, in which a referee can only lose. Still, perfect calm approach in this match, all key incidents fully correct. Rosetti will be there to praise in the locker…

Top class performance from Clément regarding assessing key match incidents. I know Roberto always wants correct calls from his referees to avoid VAR interventions. He definitely will be very happy tonight.
ReplyDeleteDisciplinary was not so perfect though: Camavinga should've been booked twice, in 65' for SPA and in 68' for reckless step on foot; Joselu should've been cautioned for reckless charging in 90', too. Some great play-on calls have to be praised but perhaps 89' was too much.
IIRC in 65' he called a previous foul before Camavinga's SPA offence, he was explaining that to the players.
DeleteBut yeah, other than IMO 68' which was a non-negotiable YC for my taste, a masterclass from the Frenchman, Rosetti should be effusively congratulating the French trio in the dressing room right now.
That was a really good game by Turpin. In this form, and with Rosetti watching... He SHOULD be in pole position for EURO final right now.

ReplyDeleteEven if the observation was not for a particular reason, he surely had big pleasure in watching the display by the French.
Very elegant gestures while whistling the penalties, especially the first one. Leaving the arm pointing the spot for a so long time means that referee was 100% mentally in the game. These particulars in my opinion are what can help us in understanding the soft skills of an Elite referee. Being firm and cool about the calls, only a few names can do that.
In this context I'm convinced Rosetti will not care at all about a missing or soft card... the control comes before everything.
It's amazing to see how Turpin developed from a referee who was selected as the home-referee in 2016 to a referee who's now respected everywhere.
DeleteEven Dutch commentators remarked yesterday that Turpin 'grew out to be a very respected referee.' And that is a big change, cause Turpin was certainly not liked here.
I did think he missed a yellow card for a stamp on the foot, if I remember well around 68 minutes or so.
But Turpin did really well. Good soft skills, nice to see how he dares to take decisions and communicated them (for example, when Vini Jr was making theatre and didn't get a free kick). Great to see! Big candidate for the EURO final for me.
In Munich, Turpin presented the highest world level of refereeing. It was definitely one of the most important and best matches in the career of the French referee, who officiated the Champions League final in Paris in 2022.
ReplyDeleteHe awarded two penalties, both rightly - one each for Bayern and Real, both in great style, being in both cases perfectly positioned to assess the events.
Turpin exuded calm and determination. He weighed perfectly when and how to contact players. He was neither a so-called policeman nor did he pretend to be a friend of the footballers, which sometimes makes the judges look childish and pretentious.
The Frenchman presented refereeing in the best old style, which, with the help of the VAR system, can often be exactly what players, clubs and good football spectacles need in high-stakes matches.

Re. 65': even if he played advantage, the offence by Camavinga is clear and at that moment going back to the previous offence (to avoid a mandatory caution?) is simply wrong
DeleteOf course, I want to once again praise Clément's overall performance, his phenomenal awareness (therefore confidence) when assessing key match incidents. It was, indeed, something extraordinary. And, contrary to many other users here, I always loved his nonchalant cool-headed style :)
65': I don't think the second foul is an absolutely mandatory card, but it is clear to me that Turpin indicated he blew for the first offense to 'save himself' from the trouble of dealing with the SPA-ish holding.
Delete68' is a miss on a perception level imo, Turpin didn't perceived Camavinga fouled his opponent with his studs. Probably he should have clocked that 65' and 68' combined were too much and booked for PI though.
90' should be a YC tbh, very unaware and cynical charging. The way Turpin handled the wild reaction by Neuer is sensible, considering the no YC call for the foul (while being a very obvious dissenting action)
The second PK call was quite a a breathe of fresh air for Turpin, who was suffering a few bits of dissent from Madrid players in the last ~10mn. The Frenchman got the luck he deserved there!
Overall though, these are minute details in the big picture,and it doesn't tarnish the very sound performance of Turpin, who can deservedly be praised for the blinder he played: technical accuracy, presence, management, game-feeling, everything was at the top. This was a pleasure to see!

DeleteBecause the Polish final chances increase rapidly when the Italian NT goes far. Yes, I know it’s far-fetched :)
I think that in this tournament mode, where the two first-placed teams advance to the round of 16, the third-placed team can also qualify and only the fourth-placed team is definitely eliminated, one can basically philosophize about which games are top clashes. If, for example, one assumes that France and the Netherlands "easily" reach the round of 16, the parallel match between Austria and Poland would be much more explosive in "my" Group D (I am from Austria).

DeleteI think, this could be a game, where UEFA uses someone, who they don't have to protect for the KO stage, as they did with del Cerro Grande in GER-FRA last time.
DeletePlus, the argument of Peter is also right, that there might be more important games, if we assume wins for ESP and ITA on MD1.
My current prediction is Michael Oliver (who has done Sociedad-Inter in the CL GS, so Juve-Real shouldn't be a problem anymore...).
