  1. What previous focus on Kavanagh are you thinking about?
He hasn't worked internationally last season and his qualifiers (EL 3R + ECL PO first leg) this summer were nothing special, I think.
So quite a surprise to see him in league A.

    1. Well, I think that before he was not even appointed. But thinking in detail about this argument, it's correct to say that after Pawson demotion (these could be considered indeed as Pawson games), now he is the new regular (experienced) Category 1 from England and this wasn't before.

      Delete
    2. Do you think pawson was demoted due to age or was it performance

      Delete
    3. With respect, I do not believe that Kavanagh will ever excel on a domestic level, let alone the int'l scene. He is a reasonably safe pair of hands, but not a name for the biggest games. If the game can be handled with the referee staying in the background then Kavanagh will be fine, however if the game requires the referee to step in and take control then he'll struggle.

Kavanagh is still relatively young (38) so has time to develop and prove my argument wrong, but I'd personally place more emphasis on Brooks from England to replace Pawson as a trusted Cat 1 referee. It's far too early to say if Brooks could make the Elite group (he's 34) but I'd fancy him over Kavanagh.

    4. Taylor fourth official... Any particular reason?

      Delete
    5. To be honest, it's not known for sure, but I suspect it's related to that Euro quarter-final game between Germany and Spain because of the incident involving Cucurella. Maybe UEFA lost a little confidence in Taylor for these first continental games of the season and decided not to play him.

      Delete
    6. Pawson was demoted due to age, to leave room for new perspective referees. The English situation has been in a stalemate for a definitely too long time. It's time to change, somebody must raise after Taylor and Oliver.
About the appointment of Taylor as fourth, let's remember he got an Europa League play off, that is surely a hidden game and not a very exposed one. I think that committee wants to wait before appointing him again for certain matches, but some things at moment seem already sure for me: now, he can't officiate any German team, he has a certain age (not that old, but OK), and it will be very hard to see him in a CL exposed game, with the chance to lose further credit. We will see.

      Delete
    7. Taylor will retire in the next 2 years, 3 maximum. He’s already said he doesn’t want to go to 50. No German team isn’t really a big deal, but if still no Italian teams either it’s a bit of a smaller field for him.

  2. Referee Srdjan Jovanovic failed Uefa Fitness Test, what can be reason that he is changed by Michael Oliver for UEFA NL GAME Belgium Israel. Big regret about this.

    1. Thanks for this important information. So one could guess that in past maybe the same happened when he didn't get games for a long time and apparently this was without reason. Also, let me say, I find this very strange, as he shouldn't have physical problems, given his body shape...

  6. Norway Austria is derby of that group, could this mean potential focus on Dabanovic?

    1. How is Norway - Austria a derby? Austria - Slovenia is one, but Vienna and Oslo are more than 1500 kilometres separated from each other

  7. Zwayer will work as VAR, very strange because it's not common for him in UEFA games. No appointments for him in this set, while Stieler and Siebert got games. And then we have also Osmers in a game that it's expected to be hot and one could have guessed Zwayer as well, why not? But we must also consider we are at the early stages.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Zwayer regularly works as VAR in Germany and of course also has internationale experience in that role. But yes, he hasn't done a UEFA VAR game in a while.
And yes, Stieler and Siebert instead of him in both the CL PO and the league A games now is remarkable. Probably Zwayer is hidden a bit after the EURO SF. A punishment wouldn't make sense.
An appointment for MKD-ARM would have been worse than a break for Zwayer, I think.

      Delete
    2. His semi final was very poor. Your thought make sense

      Delete
  8. Still no appointment for Danny Makkelie after euro... UEFA not interested in him anymore?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe they want some new referees on the front.
Its the start off a new campaign and also the refcom has to change.
The football teams are making also different choices.

And be honest... Makkelie is not at his top level

      Delete
    2. Relax… seems planned. He passed UEFA’s condition test at the course in Genève, 2 days ago.

It is a good thing that early season some other Dutch referees are getting their chances.

  9. Very long offside check for Denmark 1st goal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nobody knows how they decided that this was not offside. The position of the camera is extremely bad, they showed position on TV and we could see NOTHING! It is incredible in this era that in Denmark they have such a bad technology, camera position, everything. The refs don't know and we will never know if there was offside.

    1. IMO Expected level (I've watched almost whole match)

Fully under control and good disciplinary... Some good advantages and I must say impressive fitness level.

Looks like his debut went well and he is ready for next step

    2. I couldn't watch any of yesterday's games, but good to hear.

Was quite impressed by the 34 year-old Serbian in U17 EURO, he seemed to be clearly one step ahead of his peers in terms of 'maturity', guess he would have been assigned to the final if it wasn't for Serbia reaching the SFs. His promotion to First after the tournament was an unexpected but welcoming decision, IMO he could have a higher ceiling than Jovanovic, even.

81'Bad example of how to not let adbantadw.
Dangerous foul OK,but you let the game game cause very promising chance was going.

We had positive example with Oliver couple weeks ago and now Sidiropolous with this.

Shows that he is far from his very best.

  12. What a game for Tohver in Gibraltar, wow.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nightmare game for the veteran Estonian referee, he was unable to take the reins of such an agricultural/amateur game.

      Three OFRs:
-89' (possible PK for handball for Gibraltar, initial decision of play-on/retake with throw-in upheld)
-90+4' (Liechtenstein 1-2 goal disallowed for offside interference)
-90+12' (PK for handball for Liechtenstein, very interesting incident)

      Delete
    2. Just watched last minutes:

82' Penalty to Gibraltar, for me only supportable decision, attacker used a contact with defender lying on the ground, but not clear and obvious mistake.

89' OFR for handball, I really don't understand the decision by referee to play on after OFR.
      https://ibb.co/Sv8q9VL
      Any idea?

90'+2 Possible punishable offside when LIE scored 1-2 goal, the player didn't touch ball, so after the original play on by AR2, Tohver assessed the situation as punishable. Player clearly interfered with opponent when ball passed, correct offside. Maybe should have been detected by AR2 as well, the geographic position was rather evident, but then discussion is about the fact he didn't play ball.

90'+12 Another OFR for handball, big chaos in penalty area, following a corner kick, definitely impossible to see anything, but also before the kick many mutual misconducts... I think at the end penalty OK decision, but why not for the previous OFR?

Were all these incidents just a case or did the referee contribute to an extremely challenging game in a context like GIB - LIE? To be honest, in recent times it's not the first time we see Tohver in so bad shape...

      Delete
    3. There were plenty of ugly scenes before the stoppage time (mass confrontations, bench cards...), at times it felt like a Sunday League/Kreisliga game.

      Delete
    4. The offside interference should easily be spotted on field, but at least the correct decision was reached eventually.
The last handball is crazy considering he didn’t give the one in 89’. Did GIB11 even handle the ball? It was kicked by GIB7 and then unclear what followed

      Delete
    5. Not a surprise. Previous clashed between those to teams in the NL also yielded double digit card numbers (Levnikov had one of those games). But 14 YCs, 1 RC, 2 penalties is yet another level...

      Delete
    6. Rewatching the penalty in 82' from a different angle, I must say that the penalty call is more than supportable, I think also correct because the LIE player made exactly that movement with leg to stop attacker, one can see this very unfair action.

      Delete
    7. For me, it's a clear foul for handball in 89'. It's not a natural position. For the rest... it's impressive when you see the number of cards... But... With the new rule on mobbing and dissent, I'm not surprised. The score is quite close

      Delete
    8. I watched the game this morning.
One can split the analysis into two parts.

      1) Tohver did not approach this game, as it turned out, in the 'correct' way. The biggest problem is that he made the thesis of his approach trying to come across as reasonable to the players, using his excellent english skills, when really the Estonian ref had to present himself as a firm leader in this match. He annoyed the players a bit with his foul recognition and they never really bought into what the referee was trying to do. He missed opportunities to clamp down on reckless play a few times, but nothing thaaat exaggerated. In the general regard, the performance fell short but was not a disaster akin to, for example, Strombergsson in Armenia-N.Macedonia a few years back.

      2) The end was real chaos, with very little match control intact. The big incidents are as discussed; 82' was a correct penalty but big problems with the three OFRs: clear offside missed which should have been spotted and then two very dubious handball rulings.

It would be better in these games imo to appoint referees (from mostly Eastern countries) who are used to acting in a strict manner but maybe have something to learn about soft skills, rather than the contrary, which happened with Treimanis and Tohver this month. Volen Chinkov and even Robert Schroder from Germany would be two random names which come to mind.

  14. I happened to watch only stoppage time (14'30") (!) with the OFR for handball in 90'+12'.
Match report shows 38 fouls and 15 yellow cards (!).

    ReplyDelete
  15. Very low level both of football and of refereeing in Gibraltar, unfortunately. Sending a referee to games of this kind is a way to "kill" a referee - no referee comes out of a game of that kind looking good. Not even the best referees in the world will have an easy game here.

  16. Crazy first half for Peljto.

    - GOAL dec. by AR1 (0-1)
    - disallowed swiss goal - handball after OFR
    - RC to ESP2 for DOGSO (VAR checked pot. offside)
    - no PK for handball

  17. Lawrence Visser (BEL) for (LUX-BLR) had a good game overall. No incidents to report. Good match management but I think he missed 2 YCs for an elbow. Unfortunately I don't have a link to propose.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Short commentary of refs I somehow managed to watch today:

    Visser;
-solid match, but not enough consistency, sometimes too lenient, sometimes too giving in terms of cards.

    Kavanagh;
-if we are nitpicking then we can for sure find mistakes.
But very good performance where he managed to let the game flow but at the same time when things got rough he was not afraid to show cards, especially to SRB players,3 cards in 2 minutes for 3 separate fouls.

    Letexier;
-yes he is rising star, but not consistent enough tonight..weird to say that some ref will punish home team more, but that wqs the case here...5 1 in terms of cards but we saw some similar fouls is something that's not right...but result was 1-0 and he wont be talked about

    Mariani;
-watched him in 2nd half, good performance in hostile enviro, whenever Pois losing you know you will have tough game..but somehow he managed to guide the match without major issued

    Peljto;
-watched him in 1st half, crazy half where he was excellent..spot on RC,spot on YC and spot on penalty denial..

    Sidiropolous:

-not consistent enough, had advantage that he did not let go and had some mistakes in terms of fouls and bookings.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Letexier: I agree that the YCs were not optimal, but it was nothing too dramatic, apart from 1-2 "soft" YCs they were all fine and not very impactful in the game, since they came quite late. Overall, he still left an excellent impression with great "play on" calls, letting the game flow as much as possible. IMO his ability to accurately detect (non-)fouls is underrated, it leads to entertaining and fair matches every time I watch him, and I can't praise him enough for this.

      Delete
  19. I watched first half of Spain vs Switzerland and although Peljto gets most big calls correct (except for the OFR handball) which should be praised, I am somehow never fully convinced by him, or the way he’s presenting himself. Missing ‘something’ (Charisma / Natural authority?) to convince in games with the big teams. I guess this was also visible in the Real Madrid game last season. But he can be a very trusted name for the mid-table teams.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Regarding Peljto, I think that after an excellent period that led him to a deserved promotion to Elite, his performances have stabilized a bit. Not too negative, but surely more could have been expected and some time ago, in the very early period of Elite, the committee tried to raise his level even more. For now it hasn't been possible, but there is still time, surely he will be able to play his chances in the future. I think that perhaps the factor you describe that may be missing in him is a sort of cleverness to referee matches at this level, but this could come later. Strong referee when it's about taking decisions, no doubts.

Marciniak (mentioned in a post that he was originally appointed to Fra - Bel)

    4' Goal decided by AR1
    https://streambug.org/cv/c698b2
Big responsibility here, but let's remember that there isn't GLT in Nations League, so VAR checks the goals. It is possible that VAR didn't have a contrary proof and so the assistant referee was just supported. Based on the footage, one can't say anything. I don't know whether later, maybe on Spanish or Swiss TV, something more was shown. In such situations when VAR has the evidence, must send the frame, if this didn't happen, it's possible they just backed AR1. But talking about such issues in very top level football it's always unpleasant, we have all the tools to solve this problem...

7' Disallowed goal for handball after OFR (good ONSIDE by AR2 as well, otherwise it would have been reported by VAR before handball)
    https://streambug.org/cv/1185e1
Correct decision, goal not directly scored by hand, so need of OFR.
Alwas difficult to spot such incidents.

  28. Kabakov with 2 clear YC's missed in first 20 minutes.
I understand that he doesn't want to see game with lot of cards, but these were stonewall.

Also pitch and rain are not helping.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Very very poor first half from Kabakov. Bikas will not be happy with this performance. When you miss 3 mandatory yellow cards for same team it is really bad. Add to that how he badly handles protest from home players. Incredible for this level. And now he will have problems and card fiesta in second because of that. Only thing that can help him here is if Wales makes 0-3 and kills the game.

    1. Kabakov handed the game very well! He was in full control of the game, all players respected him and his decisions. Regarding the heavy rain, the cards were manageable, especialy so early in the game!

  30. Not a challenging match for Kruzliak.
The Slovakian allowed a bit of roughness, as we know his style, not different today, but within the limits. Almost all the cards given, for protests after whistles or dissenting gestures, such as throwing the ball away.
The match was a bit interesting only in the very last minutes when Israel scored the 1-2, but it didn't last long (and Israeli player also complained for that).
Some VAR checks in not relevant situations, then a correctly disallowed an Italy goal in the 75th minute, VAR confirmed.
The only small negative note, in the 55' minute the timing of a whistle f or offside wasn't perfect by the Slovakian who, after seeing the ball going out of the area, accepted the assistant input (correct call, attacker in contact with the goalkeeper in offside), but an Israel player was about to score with a shot in the same time. A great save by Donnarumma when the gamew was already stopped removed any possible controversy, however in my opinion these cases should be used by referees to really understand when to stop the game and accept the flag from their assistants, even without thinking too much, a disaster can always be around the corner. Just ask Marciniak...

The other OFR in this game - disallowed goal for Lithuania in min 78 for an offensive foul. Good VAR intervention, the ROU goalkeeper already had both hands on the ball before it was hit. Obrenovic really should have spotted that live.

Overall very unconvincing performance tonight from the Slovenian, saved twice by the VAR in the 2nd half.

      Delete
    2. Not good to have two OFRs about "normal fouls" (no handballs), but just as general remark, it seems to me that the Slovenian VAR Kajtazovič seems to feel himself more allowed to intervene in Obrenovic than Vincic games...

    1. Totally agree with you. Var made a mistake for me to send the referee on OFR.

    2. Why do you say it was a dive? Certainly there is contact between the players. I see that the defender missed the ball and put his leg on the running direction of the attacker stopping his advance.

    3. Contact is minimal, fall is too easy. Ref Com doesn't like such penalties. We can see it in every RAP. I can't undestand VAR intervention in this situation either.

    3. I don't know why people always think that a referee is physically unfit if he doesn't pass the fitness test. There are no unprepared referees at that level.

It's amore about the fact that on a certain day, under certain circumstances, each of us can feel heavy and tired. Especially those who run in high temperatures... plus injuries and age of the referee (most of them 40+).

And as for Marciniak, as far as I know, he didn't even run the main part of the test (SDS test).

  35. Here a video with both incidents from Romania - Lithuania in a longer sequence: https://streambug.org/cv/92ac9e
I think that the penalty assigned after OFR can be indeed discussed. While in the live sequence, before replays, it looks like attacker going deliberately against defender to get a whistle by referee, the closer replays in my opinion show us why VAR called. It should be for the movement with left leg, leaving it when attacker is passing, but also considering that, you have a soft contact. I don't think that VAR thought about a full step on foot, but when you have such kind of fouls, you can easily expect a call from the room. Obrenovic doesn't look too much convinced at monitor, I think playing on without VAR intervention wouldn't have been a scandal.

Dutch female referee Shona Shukrula ran and passed the men SDS condition test in Genève, Switzerland, last week at the UEFA course (along with Danny Makkelie apparently) and will make her first appearance as a 4O in the Eredivisie next weekend.

  37. Strange management by Dabanović. In 50/50 situations he don't show the direction, leaving it to the players to guess or fight for the ball. His placement is often between the player in possession of the ball and the possible receiver, taking away the opportunity for that particular pass. Faul detection (or where he set the bar) a bit dodgy. And then some blatant mistakes, as throw ins the wrong way. But key situations correct I guess.

  38. About Kabakov, interesting to point out that he started the game with a very early YC, which was absolutely correct, video:
    https://streambug.org/cv/43a761

Then he indeed decided to allow a certain physical play, let's say that, but to me at least these two incidents (some of you mentioned a third one, but I can't find it) are very clear yellow cards for reckless. In the second case, possible SPA as well. Even with a lenient approach about disciplinary management, I think you can't allow that.

    15'
    https://streambug.org/cv/324292

A possible explanation is that indeed he thought about the pitch conditions making tackles even more sliding, but that shouldn't be an argument for the safety of the player, in other words, for him maybe these were less reckless challenges because would have resulted differently without rain...

    1. That was my thought, but we all know Rosetti/Collina will put in a lot of effort to have an Italian on board for WC26… If they have to sacrifize a very experienced name from other country to get an Italian on board, they will do so.

Unlike referees from other nations, Guida instantly gets a chance to recover after a poor 3rd round UCL qualifier in a LEAGUE A (!) Nations League game. And the other Italian Massa gets the big game in Group 3. Can’t say I’m surprised.

I predict that at some point the preferred (and most in form Italian referee) will be kept away from the most risky UEFA assignments - the typical 1st leg appointment strategy in knock-out rounds to keep the focus away from the referee, blah blah blah.

55' Possible penalty for reckless tackle after having played ball

We know this kind of penalty is whistled only very evident reckless action, well, one must say that this could have been the case, unfortunately only one replay, but it seems to me that there was contact. In all cases, impossible for Massa from his position and he couldn't even expect that, again, should have been helped by AR1, but still something hard to be reported.

59' Foul against attacker, I think supportable, but play on wouldn't have been wrong and maybe more expected decision.

86' YC for kicking ball away
    https://streambug.org/cv/fb973a
Very blatant action, impossible to miss the card in this case.

    Final whistle
    https://streambug.org/cv/b77aa7
Indeed not the best moment, but I thought about a worse scenario before watching, for me the best moment to use was exactly three seconds earlier, at 93:07 when Germany regained possession of the ball. The two - three second more he needed to whistle changed the scenario.

I'm very curious who will win this "battle" between Guida and Massa for WC 2026, one thing is sure, you can expect one of them at the tournament, no doubts. Nevertheless, honestly speaking, they were never and they will never be at the level of Orsato. For both, the fact of being potentially Italy nr. 1 (BTW at moment Guida has taken this role, as he has been nominated as representative of the referees in activity, replacing Orsato), increases the level of assignments, even without showing convincing performances, and I can't deny that. I always liked Guida more than Massa because the former had in my opinion more skills to manage players and to be the boss on the fiels, while Massa looked always like a referee performing his duty but then not caring too much about the rest. But... Massa has surely a good technical accuracy and maybe a better physical condition than Guida, also important elements, but in my opinion a bit less important than the previously mentioned. Matching both together in only one referee would result in creating a referee with excellent skills, but of course impossible :)
The domestic performances of Guida in last season have been outstanding for the Italian level and I think that this allowed him to be at EURO, maybe in addition to a preference by Rosetti, who clearly likes him, in my opinion, more than Massa. But now, as already Ref88 correctly said some days ago, this criterion will be applied again, the best domestic performer will take the spot for. It's still early, we have two seasons, and everything can happen, but I think Guida still in a better position after the EURO tournament, and having been elected, as said, in the place left by Orsato as head of Italian referees in activity.

    1. And still about them: both appointed only in VAR duties for the next serie A matchday. Both will work together as VAR and AVAR in a game on Sturday and then in other games, still VAR and/or AVAR on Sunday. It's possible both are appointed for CL MD1 (to be played in three days). One thing I like is that they are often together and Rocchi appoints them without problems, given the previous situation, maybe one could think about a strong rivalry, instead they appear professional, it's nice, must ba always underlined.

    2. What about Mariani, how is he performing in Italy? I saw him only twice, but I really liked what he did...

      Delete
    3. Yes, indeed, what makes the situation about next WC and FIFA preselection is that Mariani is on the list as well, and now the situation becomes very interesting Honestly, with Massa and Guida still active, in my opinion he wouldn't have chances, but of course things can change for all reasons. Mariani, his problem is that he makes definitely too many crucial mistakes when appointed in very big matches, for this reason he has by far many big appearances in top clashes than the former two mentioned, and he gets more frequently middle games, indeed just check his first appointment in serie A for this season, something that the other referees get only when coming from poor performances to recover. To me, this can be his years, but he must convince, doing better than the previous seasons. I think that in international level he was maybe better, but still, we remember the season in which UEFA was disappointed and nothing followed (he was expected to be promoted as Elite even before Guida...). My idea about this strange situaton is that originally, also for the injures he had in the years, Guida was not considered at all, so when Mariani was added in the FIFA preselected list for next big tournaments, they thought that Massa would have attended EURO, and then after that, Mariani with a chance for the tournament to follow, but now, as said, all went differently. I think that the performances will be the key also for him, definitely a good referee, but he has to improve when coming to crucial assessments...

      Delete
    4. The few times I watched Mariani in UEFA games, I also appreciated him and his authority, but indeed it were not big games.

Based on my observation, Mariani has more charisma and natural authority on the FoP than his Elite compatriots, and he was very well accepted by the players, too. He almost looks like a retired soccer player himself tbh :p
A pity that his technical ability, crucial decisions are not at a higher level..

    1. About the possible violent conduct, action is clear, deliberate against the opponent. As it is always for such situations in modern refereeing, all is about intensity, but by book clear red card without discussions. Without further replays, possible that the player made a bit of scene, but of course the action can't be denied. Red card to be confirmed if given, but I think this is a case in which if you call to see many VARs, some of them will have clearly different opinions. If you call it to monitor, it can look at very soft, that's why very often they don't do that, and it is not possible to find consistency, unless very strict guidelines by head of refereeing.

About the penalty, absolutely correct call by VAR, you have two penalties missed in this clip and that's definitely not good for the officials. At first the handball, for me impossible to see live, only replay showed that it was a clear touch by open arm. Then, the second incident that can be assessd as reckless, but was not analyzed because already punishable handball before. Referee decided to stay rather far from the action, he is not shown in the video when the incident happens, I think it would have been very difficult to see in many of the cases, but not the feeling of being very fit . AR1 could have cooperated by having frontal view for the call. Then, looking carefully at incident, the player wanted to pretend a head injury, but then he stopped himself in time because he was aware VAR would have checked and he stopped his action. Despite of this extremely unfair act, one can't deny the foul. To me, this would have been another clear penalty for reckless challenge, without the previous one before.

    2. 1st situation is AR's mistake +bad teamwork and match preparation.

In situations like this, AR must check the line of second last defender, with occasional checking throw-in taker by turning his head to the left.

In this particular situation, AR is concentrated too much on throw in. Why is throw in so important?

What can you miss as AR, incorrectly taken throw-in?
      Okay, the referee will notice.
