Red card in Aberdeen. Difficult to tell point of contact from TV. Interesting one, challenge from behind, very cynical. Perhaps a challenge where you can argue VC given the lack of intent for the ball. Also a YC for not respecting the captains only rule in the aftermath

DeleteHere video, good analysis, onecan agree. It can be read as deliberate action and so violent conduct because player is aware he can't reach ball and he only wants to stop opponent. Nevertheless, in modern refereeing those "old" red cards that were never questioned years and years ago, now are always in focus for the point of contact, and I think we can draw the conclusion VAR wouldn't have called the Dutch referee if he had issued "only" YC. It's a brave decision by him, helped the fact that he was close with perfect view, but yes, there isn't consistency on such challenges, most of referees find better to assess as yellow cards..
IIRC, in the last RAP there was a similar challenge (from behind, cynical, no chance to play the ball) assessed as RC, so maybe (finally) a change in assessing such tackles in UEFA.

About Mariani, strange that he didn't get any previous game in CL, EL or ECL qualification, but I managed to now that he was busy with an Erasmus refereeing project, having been called as guest in Portugal some weeks ago. Not appointed in serie A MD1, it's possible he has a CL play off because no other Italians involved with Guida and Massa in Europa League).

I would leave out Gil Manzano. The way UEFA used him the last seasons doesn’t really indicate a CL Playoff 2nd leg… I could rather imagine that chapter Gil Manzano is now completely ended by UEFA.
