  1. Very interesting choices by committe.
Some things to underline: at first, about group A, we can see that Manchester United will be officiated again by an Italian crew, after Orsato in last matchday. In past, we never saw a team in group stage being officiated by two referees from the same nation in a row. Now, it is possible. Of course, more than crucial game for Rocchi.
In the other group, Gil Manzano is there and a win by Basel should be expected on the paper. However, still a very good assignment.
Group B: Jug with a CL game, we know that very often he is rewarded with such assignements, even though matches are not important on the paper. Most important thing, however, is Damir Skomina's presence as AAR1. This is a very strong signal by the Slovenian Elite, again. I think he asked for getting this game, otherwise I would have guessed even two NO FIFA AARs for Jug in this match. More than good, this must be noticed by committee (you know that AARs appointments are made by domestic federations).
In the other group, nothing new under the sun, with Çakır again appointed for a top clash. I lost the count about his big matches in Champions League. However, maybe one could start to think: are we sure that there aren't other options? The game is not that important, both teams already qualified, I think it was an opportunity for a different choice. But nothing against the Turkish, of course.
Group C: Stieler with his second CL game, after Juventus - Olympiacos, I think Roma - Qarabag will be not that difficult for him. In the other game, Makkelie for a top clash, but in case of win by Roma, everything will be already decided (Chelsea and Roma qualified). So, the fact that this match in London will be crucial only in case of loss by Roma against Qarabag, allowed this appointment.
Group D: regular appointment for David Fernández Borbalán, I don't think that it will be a tough game. And then, the last international match of Craig Thomson in Barcelona, not a top clash, but surely a more than good farewell for the Scottish referee, who leaves the scene.

    1. Maybe Skomina asked to get appointed as AAR. I know that Eriksson has done that before just to get a feeling of how it is to stand behind the goal with an limited area to move in

      Delete
    2. In which game Eriksson was AAR?? Which season?? Please help :)

      Delete
  2. Two Italians in a row for Manchester and two Dutchmen on MD 5&6 for Atletico. Not really a problem, but normally avoided.

Really good appointments for Gil Manzano and Makkelie. Personally, I would have swapped the appointments in group A. Anyway Gil Manzano now looks even more likely to take F. Borbalan's spot next summer.
And Makkelie seems to belong already to the top half of the Elite group and should be expected for a R16 match.

Surprisingly big name for the match in Munich with regard to the standings.
    Nice last appointment for Thomson.

    1. Not satisfied with Jens Grabski Maae's performance. Too soft if not just wrong penalty leading to 1-0 and free kick + YC + possible offside leading to 2-0. Missed second YC to CHE #15 for SPA in 82'. Missed clear violent conduct (punch below the belt) in 84'. No clear line in foul selection (some phantom fouls whistled, some clearer not).

  5. Maybe we can even expect Vincic with a game tomorrow. Otherwise Obrenovic could be AAR1 in Jug's team.

    1. Vincic in Rotterdam at Feyenoord-Napoli?

      Delete
    2. @Timo, in MD5 Skomina officiated SSC Napoli - Shakhtar Donetsk, therefore it's highly unlikely that the Slovenian team would officiate Napoli in the second consequtive match.

      Delete
    3. In MD5 Orsato officiated Man Utd and in MD6 Rocchi is officiating Man Utd... In MD5 Kuipers officiated Atlético Madrid and in MD6 Makkelie is officiating Atlético Madrid... This logic is preventing Vincic from officiating Napoli this Matchday!!

      Delete
  6. Where can we expect Michael Oliver? Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Feyenoord - Napoli would be the best choice, if this is his final test.
=> Manchester City are already through no1
=> If you cannot referee a team twice in the group stage, this is literally his only (CL) match he can arbitrate
=> Crucial match for the qualification, totally decisive if Shakhtar lose at home which is likely
=> Feyenoord will try hard to avoid finishing with six losses
=> Rotterdam is a very hard place to referee, in Netherlands it is regarded as the most intensive arena. Whereas Qarabag have had only First Category referees, Marciniak whistled FEY-MNC, Undiano had FEY-SHK; UEFA clearly respects De Kuip.

So in my opinion I would really like to see Oliver in Rotterdam.

      Delete
    2. Just the same thoughts here as well... For a final test before a promotion, Feyenoord v Napoli seems to be better than a Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund with no significance... Also William Collum struggled a bit in Napoli v Feyenoord other leg so Oliver in De Kuip would be a perfect choice IMO :)

      Delete
    3. I like to see Turpin again in the Kuip after the banana-incident in the EL against Roma.

      Delete
    4. Turpin is in Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup so not possible to see him in De Kuip at least on this Wednesday :)

      Delete
  7. Out of interest, would you say referees at FIFA level get to see a lot of the world?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. According to Pol van Boekel: no. They mainly see the airport, the hotel and the stadium. There is no time to see the city, mainly because of security reasons.

  8. A lot of surprise for me today: Skomina as Jug's AAR, Gil Manzono and Stieler but on top of all the absance of Atikson once again. If the last season spanish has been his last international match, it would be too harsh for him. Or maybe he asked don't be assigned anymore for personal reason
As farewell match I really hope that tomorrow he will be assigned for real madrid borussia dmt even uf totthenam is in the same group. He deserve a firewell cl match

  9. AARs appointet with danish Mads-Kristoffer Kristoffersen today - should mean EL match Thursday.

    1. Much pushed referee. He has a talent and is an athlete, but he should change his passive attitude and be more preventive in his games.

  10. Predictions for Wednesday's games:

    Liverpool - Spartak Moscow
    Szymon Marciniak (POL)

    Maribor - Sevilla
    István Vad (HUN)

    Shakhtar Donetsk - Manchester City
    Viktor Kassai (HUN)

    Feyenoord - Napoli
    Pavel Královec (CZE)

    Porto - Monaco
    Jonas Eriksson (SWE)

    Leipzig - Beşiktaş
    Aleksei Kulbakov (BLR)

    Real Madrid - Borussia Dortmund
    Michael Oliver (ENG)

    Tottenham - APOEL
    Slavko Vinčić (SVN)

There are only two options for Oliver. He will get either the game in Madrid or Feyenoord - Napoli. Match in group H is important only for the German team, they can still reach Europa League, while the game in the Netherlands is of course important for qualification to CL KO stage. Napoli must win and Shaktar should lose against City. Surely, in the context of a challenging assignment, Feyenoord - Napoli would be better, but I have the feeling that committee will "use" the game in Madrid as first test in a "top clash" for the young Englsh. In any case, we can't expect a different game for him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I forgot Ovidiu Haţegan. He has to get a game as well.
I would appoint him in Maribor, I don't see other options.
      So, out Vad, in Haţegan.

    2. Turpin got already 3 CL games and he is now in UAE for Club World Cup as VAR.

    3. Summary

      First Group

      3 CL games:
      Michael Oliver (ENG)
      Anthony Taylor (ENG)
      Artur Soares Dias (POR)

2 CL games with a chance to get a third one tomorrow:
      Aliaksiej Kulbakou (BLR)
      Ruddy Buquet (FRA)

      2CL games + 1 EL game:
      Jesús Gil Manzano (ESP)
      Tobias Stieler (GER)
      Manuel de Sousa (POR)
      Ivan Kružliak (SVK)
      Matej Jug (SVN)

1 CL game + 1 EL game (possibly also 2 CL games like Gil Manzano, Stieler, Kružliak from U-21 Euro):
      Benoît Bastien (FRA)

1 CL game (possibly 2 CL games):
      Slavko Vinčič (SVN)

So, having in mind that there will be some quitting referees (Atkinson, Rizzoli (was still included on the list for this half of the season), Tagliavento, Thomson, maybe Eriksson) and maybe a demotion, I suspect we can expect more than two promotions this winter. So the natural candidates are those with three CL games, so apart from Oliver and Taylor we have:

Ruddy Buquet, Aliaksiej Kulbakou and Artur Soares Dias.

Some chances have also experienced referees with 2 CL games this season. Those are Manuel de Sousa and Matej Jug.

      What do you think?

    4. There are 2 options for Oliver..
      1.Leipzing & Beşiktaş
      2.Porto & Monaco

    5. Oliver refereed Leipzig v Monaco on MD1 so unlikely @veli

      Delete
    6. @RayHD: I completely agree.
I think, anyone, who gets promoted to Elite should have handled 3 CL games in the group stage, so I am curious whether Buquet and/or Kulbakov get another match on Wednesday.

    7. *and/or Oliver - your statistic is not completely correct there ;)

    4th official: Joost van Zuilen

Confirmed that Di Bello and Doveri will replace Rizzoli and Tagliavento. No changes in assistant referees list.

  17. Don't know if it's of any interest/relevance here but maybe. Bo Karlsson has today resigned from the role as head of the Swedish Referee Committée due to accussations of sexual harassment of a young women referee inn 1996 (the #metoo hashtag got her to step forward). Bo claims to not remember the incident but stepped down immediately since his role as head of referees is a position of confidence.
If he will continue as member of UEFA referee committée and observer is nothing that they so far has given any hint of.

  20. Bayern minute 42. Alves punched and hit his opponent in the stomach several times and then dived and got no card because he fooled the refs. Should have been a Bayern penalty and red card to Alves. No close up replays. That’s what I saw from the tv. Replay please.

    2. Punching by Alves seems possible, but is not clearly visible. FK for Paris probably given, because he felt down, that was wrong.
But as the match was stopped then, technically not a missed penalty for the push by Marquinhos.
      YC to Marquinhos correct.
YC to Tolisso probably to book one of both teams for a small riot, but he did not much wrong.

    3. The punches by Alves are very easily noticed in this video. 3 clear punches. Violent conduct.

  21. Roma - Qarabag frst half: absolutely expected level performance by Stieler. No problems at all. We can mention both assistant referees: excellent calls, including some very important ones.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Correct onside by Tonolini for the CSKA goal: Defender was lying behind the line, so commentators took some time to understand...

  23. CSKA goal caused a confusion at Russian TV. Commentators said that the goal is probably an offside. Nobody noticed MU player who was out of the pitch

  25. Very difficult assessment for Pickel when Roma scored for 1-0.
Two possible offsides, it must be checked carefully.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Missing 2nd YC by Cakir to Tolisso for a dive in the box.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Shameful by Alves. 3 clear punches. Sad that it was completely missed. You can clearly see it in the beginning of the video. With VAR this would have been a simple red card and penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Okayish performance of Gil Manzano in Lisbon. However, not a polished material yet.

Apart from some controversies where both decisions can be accepted, there were some issues he should consider if he want to become a top elite referee in the future:
    - too late reaction on head injury
    - body language / reactions should be improved in order to calm down players rather than escalating bad emotions (too hurry in some scenes, too passive in the other ones)
    - not so clear line regarding foul selection (was it really a foul in 63'? - YC Akanji for SPA)
    - you need to be sure there is nobody on an opponents' half when whistle for kick-off (65') in order to avoid repeating a kick-off

    2. Not SFP. Leg not extended at point of impact so good decision.

If that is a penalty we should all give up now. Nowhere near enough for a PK.

Second yellow card needs to be clear, I'm ok with this. Especially as game seems to be played in sporting manner.

Similar contact to John Terry at Barcelona some years past. I'm happy with yellow. Can't be considered excessive force or brutality.

Only five seconds to react, no disaster.

The debate is between out of play and offside, i don't think that has impacted on missing situation. He has a blocked view and misses contact. Should be a yellow card.

Decisions all look good to me. Correct understanding for my taste.

      Great work by AR1.

Finally, it's a defensive free kick that is awarded. Just look at the body language. Eye contact with main referee to communicate defensive foul and flag raised straight in the air. Don't be a fault finder and go looking for problems!!! Play was restarted with a defensive free kick.

Thanks for the videos as always.

    3. Sorry, my fault with the throw-in!

To be clear, I back referee with all Key Match Incidents, too! Just posted it because they were KMI where the referee had to make an important decision.

However, I still think the reaction on head injury should have been quicker and I don't like those two free kick decisions.

As said, no bigger issues but some things to consider.
