  2. Good appointment for Brych ! Good luck !

  3. 30th CL KO match for Brych (if I counted correctly).
A possible EURO team with him - meaning a First group referee as potential replacement. However after EL QF and EURO selection, Siebert is practically Elite, I think.
Rosetti observing probably mostly due to the importance of the game - but maybe also evaluating a final candidate for the summer.

  4. Great and expected appointment. Kuipers and Brych in my opinion THE two candidates for EURO final. That might explain Rosetti as observer.

  5. I added this to the blog's side but will restate it here for clarity's sake. Please do NOT post appointments before UEFA releases them amongst the comments - we appreciate that it feels like 'public service', but can be very dangerous for the appointed officials and must be avoided.

If you feel like you want to discuss an appointment confidentially with us, please feel free to message us using the contact form at the blog's side, however we would ask you to refrain from using the comments section for that ends.

Again - thanks for your co-operation and we are always committed to keeping and improving this service for you.

    1. I have to disagree again, although I havent shared any confidential information so far. Imagine that there is a confidential document with the names of the refereeing team. If someone makes that document it public, it would be forbidden. Also what is forbidden is sharing information, and that is the potential problem for the person who does it. But for media and social networks: anonymous informal, unofficial information, which is basically a rumour, cannot be dangerous because anyone can write anything on social networks or blogs, and noone can proove that this information is not merely a guess. I could have posted last year that Orsato will officiate CL final, and it would have been right, but I didnt have any information on that matter.

    2. In brief, it is ok if you dont want to share the info you get for moral reasons, and also it is hugely irresponsible (even STUPID) if someone posts confidential information AND names the source. But comments like "unofficial information is that Vincic is appointed for EL semifinal game XY" wouldnt be a reason for concern.

    3. But besides the arguments of you two, it takes the excitement away. E.g. Brych's appointment (including 4O) was leaked here on Sunday for some minutes. If more readers had seen it or if it wasn't deleted at all, we wouldn't have the nice discussions yesterday. And I personally would have been more excited about the appointment this morning, if I had not (nearly) known it already.
And it doesn't really, how trustworthy it is: Once an appointment is claimed to be revealed, the discussions appear senseless and if it's true, the official release is just a boring confirmation. And if it's false, it was even wronger to post that comment and deceive the readers.

    4. I agree with Forlan: independent blogs and websites should not wait for official press released. The main role of independent media is to find and present information before the official press release. If the British tabloids would wait for press releases, no one will read them.

    5. Completely agreed with Chefren and Mikael and their statement! Maybe Anonymous 19:44 has different expectations of this blog, of course that’s possible, but in my view this blog’s main purpose is to provide a platform for discussions about refereeing on a content level, and not so much delivering scoops for the curious. Of course the swift publication of relevant pieces of information is an appreciated service, but not at the cost of potentially harming a referee(-ing team).
And actually I can only be happy that this blog cannot stand comparison with any British tabloid as those are not so much characterized by the quality of their content :)

    6. DutchRef, my expectations are according to what is stated at the top of this blog: "Blog about the man in the middle: appointments, analysis, discussions and much more." That indicates to the readers that they can expect "much more" than appointments and technical analysis. If that is not the case, that statement should be changed to reflect the real purpose of this blog. Referees signed confidentiality agreements, not the regular readers, who are not employed by FIFA, UEFA, etc, and should be allowed to freely share information, according to the democratic principle of freedom of speech.

      Delete
    7. Well, the “much more” is a rather undefined aspect, but bearing in mind the administrators statement revealing of still confidential appointments is obviously not included.
The regular readers don’t have any obligation to keep confidential information confidential, true, but their sources do. The consequences however (withdrawal of the particular appointment) can affect and harm the referee(s) involved. And that’s what the blog administrators would like to avoid, asking all blog users kindly to respect their appeal.
That shouldn’t be too big an issue IMHO.

      Delete
    8. If you expect to find scoops, this is a wrong place.
This blog was born (also its previous version) as pure passion for international refereeing and nothing more. We are not interested in reporting scoops, we just enjoy the discussions about refereeing. "Much more" can be everything, as DutchRef said, we offer some informations that you can't find elsewhere. This is how we want to keep the blog forever, without any obligation, without being forced to post something.
I don't know if you are a referee, but at least you don't know how it really works in terms of revealing confidential appointments. The officials in charge would be in danger, they can be removed from their duties. Would you be so cowardly (sorry for the term, but I must be clear) in making a scoop and in this way, hurting people? No, of course... so if you expect more, and maybe even scoops, you can find them elsewhere.
Official sources must come before, I'm not interested in having many readers, but I'm interested in the contents and quality of the blog related to its natural topic (refereeing).

  7. Deserved and expected appointment by Brych. I expected him in 1st leg instead of 2nd leg. Now I am very interested to see if we will see Kuipers in CL 2nd leg. If yes, it is completely expected. If not, can we say that he will probably appointed in the final as the second time if Madrid is in the final? I will even more happy if the latter happens!

Giving the fact that almost no referee got semifinal and final in the same season (expect Clattenburg in 2016), IMO Makkelie is not likely to get the final, no matter Madrid is in the final or not.

      1) Correct decision. The GK uses his hands outside the box.
      2) This one seems wierd, however, based on the shown pictures, supportable decision.
      3) No penalty for me. The ball is played, the trailing leg does not initiate any contact.
      4) Clear case of Serious Foul Play, good use of VAR system. Open studs above the ankle. In the following mass confrontation, he seems a bit unaware and could have acted more proactive, I think.
      5) FK and YC is correct, but of course a bad anticipation and a blatant advantage missed. He admits it himself, can happen.

  10. Cakir and Kuipers the dynamic duo for the second legs in my opinion. Would have said Makkelie for the final but unlikely now that he’s got the semifinal. Can’t be Lahoz or Taylor, surely not. Who will it be this year?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If Madrid in final, I would love to see Kuipers for his second CL final. If Madrid not in final, then I prefer Lahoz because he is fully deserved.

      Delete
    2. Yes. Nobody officiated final twice that means Cakir & Kuipers still being capable maximum goings to get the semis. So Carlos Grande, Lahoz, Dias and Taylor are potential candidates for final. But Lahoz & Taylor are favourite but should have a great chance to miss.
      So who else?

      Delete
  11. I think Makkelie is still candidate for the final. He received a first leg and Madrid at home is less challenging then a return in London. Also the time to the final with a 1st leg is enough far away. UEFA probably wants to reward Makkelie with a semi final for his good performances this season, taking into account that he could have nothing when Madrid goes out (Lahoz final). If Makkelie has a smooth game tomorrow without big discussion he is still favourite together with Lahoz. And to give the final for a second time to the same referee would be poor management and showing distrust in the new generation.

    2. I fully agree with this list by Superstar.

Let’s also not forget that every VAR intervention means a big mistake by the referee. I see Taylor so many times in front of the screen that a final for him wouldn’t be a deserved appointment.

      Delete
    3. Agreed, Taylor is overrated, favoured by Rosetti. If you look at what Oliver has achieved at his young age he is a MUCH better official than Taylor.

    4. Miah, superstar0110 & Anonymous what you have said that is truth but if Real and PSG in final then there is a twist is waiting for as Makkelie not going to get.

    5. You simply can't call overrated a referee who can handle any UEFA top clash (PSG-BAR, JUV-RM, SEV-BAY) and so on. And simply you can't compare him with Oliver who on his first real test failed (RM-JUV).

    1. He’s just not good enough. He was a rising star in the beginning but then he became precariously with many disappointing decisions and performances. Acceptance by players went down and also struggling with his physical condition (fitness); too far away from play, too muscular, injuries. And let’s not forget that he was sent home in early stages at the WC due a bad performance in Sweden - Germany. He is in the same position as Felix Zwayer. The are good, but not good enough for top level of refereeing.

  35. Excellent RC for SFP by Brych. He got some input by Stefan Lupp, took care of Gündogan and decided to go for RC. Good procedure.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Now Brych checked the severity of the injury and then showed RC.
Not the best way to deal with a RC to be shown immediately, however absolutely correct decision and that's the most important thing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fully agreed, Brych was in a very good position to evaluate the foul himself and there was no need to delay the showing of the red card. Also the passive approach didn’t fit this brutal foul. Having said that, indeed the most important is that the correct sanction was issued.

  38. Good YC on Neymar to stop PSG frustration fouls. Interesting that Pep's possession game is doing what Barcelona and Bayern couldn't do. Hard for PSG to score when they don't have the ball. Very dangerous RC tackle. Tackles like that deserve review and more games banned for RC offender.

    ReplyDelete
  39. How can you see such a terrible foul not by yourself? He was clearly waiting for input; assistant/VAR? He was walking to the foul and didn’t show any intention of giving a card. This is not good refereeing. No words for this!!!

    1. No words for your comment! Perfect teamwork

      Delete
    2. There are four officials on the pitch because one official can't see everything. They are team and the most important thing is correct decision. I have no problems with this.

      Delete
    3. He could have been going RC anyway and was just waiting for the VAR to double check before showing it?

      Delete
    4. Your comment is a bit exaggerated, however as I wrote earlier this way of taking it so easy when there is an important decision is typical of Brych style. It always seems that he lets the players do what they want and then he comes with the cards only some time after the actions. In Italy it would never work, in case of such fouls you have to show the cards immediately, also to calm the players. That's his way of dealing, but for me in games with great tensions it could not work too much.
      We also can't say whether:
      1) he was already sure about the RC but wanted a confirmation looking at the injured player
      2) he took time to get an advice from a team-member.

      Delete
    5. I totally agree with you. Here I read comments like this is good procedure, taking care of Gundogan qnd than showing RC etc...come on, ate you serious guys? This is clearly RC given by input from VAR. His refereing is top level, excellent control etc but why some people clear mistake try to covert to something good??

      Delete
    6. That has nothing to do with VAR - this check would come later. He surely wanted to communicate with the AR.
The procedure is a bit 'German' I would tend to say. I agree, that in games with a lot of tense (maybe also here), the immediate RC with a stricter approach could have been more suitable.

      Delete
    7. How do you know it's VAR input? That's not how VAR works, I really doubt that they will avoid protocol in UCL semi final. For me it was surely assistant's advice.

      Delete
    8. Absolutely never from VAR, that's sure.
But I insist, it is just possible that Brych waited to find more elements to take the final decision by himself without any further advice by a teammember and this would explain the delay, however, under my point of view, not the best way to deal with it.

      Delete
    9. Allegedly, Brych spoke to Lupp. Lupp was a little close and saw the situation. Only speculation

      Delete
    10. Also if you watch the German League you will see that it happens quite frequently that refs let the situation play out before handing out cards. Agree that it would never work in Italy or Spain but in this case I think it worked perfectly.

      Delete
  40. Calm down. This was RC and Brych showed it. That is all what matters.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shocking to read all these comments about the slow prodedure. Refereeing is teamwork and this a perfect example. Without using VAR, the three people on field had the chance to quickly evaluate the situation together without people would notice it.
Calm and composed presentation then with card showing procedure. Obviously the best would be to give instantly a red card without hesitation, but still this is an amazing and strong teamwork from the German team. Well done!

    1. Anyone who understand refereeing agrees with your comment.

    2. Agree. Additionally, no protests from PSG player, all managed calmly. He took the time to evaluate and to check his teammates’ ideas. Well done

      Delete
    3. Indeed excellent work. We were told to do exactly this at a recent referee meeting. The player is down and play won't be restarted for awhile so you take your time to think it through and receive input from your team, you then isolate the player and show the red card. Textbook refereeing.

      Delete
    4. Disagree, this approach would be appropriate if it concerned a complicated situation, difficult to see. This was a clear and open foul, of which Brych had an (almost) excellent view. He even wanted to go for YC, to only at the last moment change to RC. I think that late input did not come from Herr Lupp ;)

  42. Calm down. This was RC and Brych showed it. That is all what matters.

    3. Is this a joke? Never a RC!

    4. You have your opinion...but mine is red card straight...Impact with intensity above ankle...clear risk to safety of player. Dr Brych made the very right call. There is no will and no chance to play the ball.
it's the same for french media..."Awful tackle...red card deserved" are the comments. No media challenge this decision.
Safety of players is high priority for referees even at uefa. terrific tackles shown at WC2014 should be banned. Dr Brych may remember this as one back foul not punished sent him back to Germany.
IMO (i might mistake) I prefer a ref who punished too harsh this kind of foul thant the one who does only react.
I always kept in mind : Strong foul : amputation surgery for team (lol) RC. There is no way to hesitate on this foul. We may be technically less accurate... but protection of players is top priority.

  44. Impressing how Brych keeps control with clear decisions and strong communication in the difficult last 20 minutes of the game. He changed his style when it was necessary... Typical for him.

  45. Great performance from Brych, excellent match control, maybe few missed cards but it was neccesary for his great game management.

  46. Considering refereeing, I think we can say that first legs of CL semi finals were successful. Both Makkelie ans Brych did well.

  47. By the way, congrats from Neymar to Brych after the game... After RC against PSG and YC AG Neymar. That tells the story completely. That is the acceptance you work for. Compliments!
IMO maybe one missed YC and 3 missed fouls in a challenging game. Rosetti got what he hoped for and Brych is now a strong candidate for the EURO final!

  48. In my opinion, superb refereeing by Felix Brych. It is a pleasure for me to see him referee. Complicated game, with a lot of tension, he has known how to adapt his style to the needs of the game. 8.5

  49. Ignoring such blatant mobbing prior to De Bruyne's YC is ignoring the whole UEFA Referee Committee and Rosetti. UEFA RefCom were very clear throughout the season, demanding yellow cards for even slightest cases of mobbing and dissent. Now we have bunch of players almost killing Brych before he makes a decision and no card given. A very poor image of UEFA referee.

    1. But he wasn't ignoring it. He reacted strongly with a "go away" gesture and afterwards explicitly talked to Mbappe and some other players before letting the game continue.
But yes, a YC there for dissent might have been adequate anyway.

    2. Your comment is, sry, in my opinion just ridiculous. What ever you saw the last 2 hrs, it was an other game. I am really absolutely tired of reading those nonsens-comments being given only for political reasons to blame good refs in the hope that the favorite refs of the commentator g who is anonymous, logically - have better chances that way. If that continues it could really be a danger for this blog. PLEASE stop that. It makes no sense and you fail to reach what you want anyway

    3. Your post Andrasch Neunert may make sense in general, but Anonymous 22:58 has a valid point with regard to this particular situation. Guidelines are more than clear on this behavior, and throughout the season highlighted over and over again by UEFA.

    4. Andrasch, calm down. Even the biggest fan of Brych like you should be able to notice the obvious things. Can you explain what is ridiculous in my comment? I'm tired of clear fanboyism but didn't say a word about it, just posted my comment. And it's nothing political in paying attention to what UEFA pay attention to the whole season.

    5. @Anonymous 23:22

Exactly. I saw many 'political' posts (against or pro certain referees) on this blog but I'm far from that. I just wanted to share my astonishment that such experienced referee deliberately decided to throw UEFA RefCom's CLEAR instructions to the dustbin. A first category referee would have lost many points by doing that.

    6. I support a YC cause dissent here, too. But he never lost control and his clear communication cooled down the aggressions, so what? Good refs follow the needs of the game they are in charge of,first. Guidelines are guidelines, not the law of the game and a good ref is not a Roboter following them, esp. in such an important game where some minor aggressions come up without turning things into a big drama. With a more aggressive and authorative approach to the players you make the trouble only much bigger. Brych stayed cool, consequent, clear and RELAXED. That is his aura. Authority mixed with relaxed coolness. He sometimes might let the game flow a bit too long before showing cards, but hey, he can. Like Kuipers. Like Cakir. Like Mazic. Like the majority of the real top refs.

    7. For me Brych sets the example to amateur players that dissenting to the ref is ok cause even when you go to him like a bunch of hyenas nobody gets carded at all. And to me that is simply not the message one should give at a CL SF....

    8. Andrasch, your last comment was excellent!!! And please,Anonimus 23:47, did you just compared amateur players and Refs with Semifinal of UCL and top referee like Brych is??? This shows how funny are your knowledge and understanding of top level refereing and refereing in general...but no problem, just continue with grassroots comments

    9. what a grassroots fanboyism... then according to your logic UEFA RefCom's instructions based on clips from UCL are also grassroots refereeing? you are funny, it seems arguments don't reach you

    10. Anonymous 00.39. You clearly cant read my valid point because you only want to see how awesome herr doctor did yesterday. And indeed apart from his dealing with this scene he was good (for me 8.3/4ish) However the UCL SF and final is an example game for football players and kids on every level. When they see what i saw yesterday than they will be going to a referee like crazy when they are allowed to play again, dissenting all the time because "the players of PSG can too and wont get carded at all!" And the "greatest ref" just stands there takes all the shit and doesnt sanction even one player. What a great message to convey to the youth and amateur levels.... Im not impressed at all by Brychs dealing of it and it is a real pity because apart from this he was indeed (very) good.

  50. Another great display from Brych, the German has been really impressive, especially in game management, he looked always in control.
A tough 2H where he might have cautioned a few more players (one reckless tackle and dissents in the 80'-90' area), but all in all a clearly successful night for him.

I'd love to see Kuipers handle Euro final to reward an outstanding career, but with such consistent and regular performances from Brych, there is an obvious other reliable option for the job.

    1. Brych was consistently impressive in 2020 and 2021. Still cannot believe that such a super referee could not reach higher in his two World Cups.

  51. I'm actually a bit surprised about some comments. Of course, we can debate about one or two free-kicks (not) given. However, one cannot really compare today's match to the one yesterday. We have players like Neymar on the pitch who is always demanding for referees, it was a close and fast game and definitely more intense. I think we saw a clear line in terms of disciplinary control by Brych with an overall good foul detection.
We can also discuss about the procedure leading to the RC for SFP and whether he should have given it earlier. He wanted to wait for some input by Stefan Lupp, you could clearly see that he was looking to him. I understand that considering it was a very important decision. Also, there were no negative consequences following the "late" RC, actually quite the contrary, I was surprised how few or even none protests Brych was confronted with.
If we consider the intense last 20 minutes, I am pleasantly surprised how accepted Brych was. I think he and his crew did a good job and I'm sure that Rosetti will be satisfied today.

    31' - correct YC (SPA / Tackle)

32' - IFK for dangerous play? Then, IMO 60-40 SPA incident
    https://streamable.com/7x9nil

41' - charge was too trifling, correct play on
    https://streamable.com/bqzzsk

    50' - missed freekick + YC, stamp
    https://streamable.com/gl8prr

    70' - correct YC, dissent
    https://streamable.com/1imzpy

74' - borderline to VC! Agree with Brych, YC (no brutality)
    https://streamable.com/u0jfy3

77' - the decision was better than the procedure :D correct RC, Brych kept positioned ahead of the attack, if he followed play closer then he would have seen the tackle better; did Fritz 'check the line' in between ref reaching for the YC and then RC call ;)
    https://streamable.com/2o5n0s

87' - correct YC (reckless) not RC, Paris player(s) should be cautioned for mobbing; Brych surely remembers the guideline and warns in order to 'cover his arse' re. observer?

+91' - two borderline careless challenges

  55. I was surprised by the strong opinions on the way Brych produced the RC last night.

Is it advisable for young, developing referees or referees struggling for acceptance in a heated game to copy this approach? Absolutely not. There is a real risk that 1) things will get more heated between the two teams or between the teams and referees (possibly leading to further cards) and 2) that the acceptance for the RC will be unnecessarily decreased by leaving the impression that the ref was bullied into giving it.

That being said, neither of that happened last night. Things remained calm from both sides and there were barely any protests after the card had been shown. Most likely this is down to Brych's authority, gained by his performance in the match so far and his presence in CL KO games for years. There should be nothing wrong with Brych being aware of his authority and using it to his advantage. If he uses it to buy time and make sure the right decision is reached, this is in the interested of the game IMO. Probably nobody outside refereeing blogs like this will care. I don't see why UEFA wouldn't be pleased with him.

    1. I don t think, you can say that it s not advisable at all. If a ref has his own style and it s working, why not...

If you are a ref with less charisma you should definitly be faster. But otherwise you can also calm down players with beeing calm by yourself, even when things are heaten up.
Fast decision-taking is always a question of how players trust you and your decisions.
If the ref knows about this and is able to use it, every way is right.

I also can not see how delayed cards, when they are shown in this way, can decrease the acceptance. Players recognize whether a ref decides because of other players or not. And this is fully independant from the time the ref takes to decide.
On the other hand, taking time shows in these cases that the decision is well thought and not an ill considered one

  56. Brych, Kuipers, Cakir, and others might be role models...but there are first of all Von Karajan of refereeing. Not to copy but to be inspired by !!! They build different way of refereeing with their different personnality...but common point but not the least...their long lasting career at top level means something strong. We can disagree some points, some calls (OK for RC last night IMO), some tough moments (Brych at 14 and 18WC, Cakir) in their career...but the most difficult is not to reach a level (even if very tough way to) but to stay at this level.
One can say after a game is easy for a 1/2F...but the ref also deserves what he got by his implication and his acceptance (Danny and Felix)...
So i think it's a very good thing to criticize performance (call, postures, find aera of improvment) but we have to respect these colleagues who achieved the very top level (very few of us achieved).
One can rank each of them differently for others...but we must treasure to have them...and after we will have new generations.
