  1. Absolutely deserved Vincic's appointment.

    1. I disagree strongly. I think the only reason he gets it is because of Skomina's injury and that shouldn't be enough. A week after misjudging 3 penalty situations in Sofia and in the same season of his CL KO debut this is just way too much for the mediocre referee that he is. Vincic is treated like a top tier referee with a lot of credit and I just can't see why.

    2. I disagree with u Marko23. He is lately very good referee with very strong personality, excellent management and also excellent stamina. Now u speak about one match in Sofia, u need to take a look of his performances in last two three year. Definetly he has deserved to get promoted to elite. In refereeing u need to take a chance when u get it, and he had taken it with open arms. I wish him and his team a good job in Sevilla and hope to see him in Euro!

    3. Sofia wasn't his only 'bad' match the last weeks, Man United-Milan wasn't a really strong performance either...

    4. These appointments were made before the WCQ games, it is worth saying.

"this is just way too much for the mediocre referee that he is"; do you not think there is a better, perhaps more respectful, way of getting your point across?

      Delete
    5. I'm sorry Mikael, it was not my intention to be disrespectful and I can see that I was a bit strong in my comment.

I think it's a matter of style preference as well. I prefer referees with natural authority. The likes of Kuipers, Brych, Skomina, it just seems like they don't have to work for their credibility. With Vincic, it doesn't come very natural. He is working hard for his authority and I just don't think he has the real X-factor. He surely deserves to be Elite, but for me he's not among the top10 UEFA referees. Maybe the word mediocre was a bit strong there.

That said, I sure hope he does well and I wish him a good performance, because I think every referee deserves that support!

      Delete
    6. No need to apologise! You explained your view very credibly in the next comment :)

    7. Hategan is not from Slovenia, but performed consistently well in UEFA competitions. How long it took him to reach this stage, in comparison with Vincic?

  2. Now we can surely say that Vinčić has "replaced" Skomina regarding EURO selection and he will attend the major tournament. I didn't expect such a high profile appointment: CL quarterfinal, in the same year of his CL KO debut. This is absolutely big stuff for him, if you think what happened less than one year ago, you will never believe that.
I disagree with Marko23, despite of a poor performance in Bulgaria - Italy, has frequently shown in recent times to be a very strong referee, very reliable and with a solid approach. I like him, one could discuss about the fact that he got so much in a very short time if compared to other referees, and this can be true, but the performances were overall good. The process for him was accelerated after Skomina's injury. Let's remember he was already Elite referee, so in my opinion he just got a chance, and he was also very lucky.
But he is definitely better than some other Elite names who will attend EURO, no doubts about that!
In the other game, expected appointments with Mateu Lahoz making his first appearance in CL KO stage this season. Under the eyes of Rosetti, of course, he stays as candidate for CL final, but the problem for him at moment is Real Madrid.

In the past, you suggested that a referee got better appointments than another one because of a sexual relationship with the referees boss.

Sorry but that's absolutely sick. And you have continued with exactly the same tone since. Please keep your personal hatred away from this blog, thanks.

  3. So it seems that Taylor would not have chance for CL QF. Onlinone option in paris

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you: The most likely option would have been FC Bayern München (GER) - Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) this week but Taylor just handled PSG in the round of 16. Maybe he could get the return game in Paris next week but the winner of it could face Manchester City in the semi-final. UEFA usually prefers to appoint referees for the first-leg match in such cases. England's referees could even be completely out of UCL this season after the round of 16 due to this specific situation. A compromise could have been to appoint Oliver for FC Bayern München (GER) - Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) this week.

      Delete
  4. Any chance Oliver will referee a CL QF? Almost no chance he will do a semi final but I would love to see him in CL KO.

    1. Only Paris game as option for him, but without any previous appointment in CL KO stage this season, it looks quite difficult.

      Delete
    2. Oliver is very lucky to still be an Elite referee.

      Delete
    3. Hahhahahh gotta love reading those comments. Oliver is better than half Elite referees.

      Delete
    4. Better than half Elite referees no, but better than some Elite referees for sure.

      Delete
    5. The winner of Paris-Bayern will also probably play ManCity in the next round. This could be an argument against an English referee there.
But I agree, that Oliver deserves a CL KO match, therefore I would have liked him in Munich.

      Delete
    6. I agree with Philip and unknown. I would say that Oliver's level is on the average of Elite, so he is better than half Elite referee.

      Delete
    7. Oliver is the highest ranked referee in England, miles ahead of Taylor. Taylor is much more prone to mistakes and made a few very high profile ones last season. For some reason Rosetti prefers Taylor but Collina saw the potential in Oliver despite his young age, for me he has the potential to be Kuipers/Cakir level with experience.

      Delete
  5. De Burgos Bengoetxea already recovered from COVID, very good news, but at the same time, absolutely disappointing for him... he had to miss just the exact few days in which Under 21 group stage was played. You can see how much lucky and unlucky a referee can be in his career...

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think Lahoz always behave in a way that made the players angry.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Björn Kuipers with a low-profile Eredivisie match on Saturday (3rd vs 11th). Wouldn't surprise me if he gets yet another KO-stage appointment next week.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Important to note as well: Van Roekel will be back as his assistant on Saturday, after a weeks of absence.

      Delete
    2. Not very usual as well..... Makkelie in that game AZ-Sparta is VAR, Normal u see the combination referee Kuipers/ (VAR)Makkelie only in the Netherlands in the high profile matches..... seems like they are preparing for something, btw Makkelie doesn't have in his match his regular assistants, Mario Diks who made the terrible mistake in Serbia-Portugal is replaced by Jan de Vries, while Mario Diks has a game with Van Boekel, so he is not injured!

      Delete
    3. You are right, they are probably preparing for a CL QF then, as there is no other relevant reason to have Makkelie as VAR on Saturday at Kuipers' game. Liverpool - Real Madrid makes the most sense to me.
About Diks, I would not be surprised if KNVB is kind of protecting him right now, with some more low profile matches. I think he will be back with Makkelie next week.

      Delete
    4. @Anonymous, about Diks You can be right! btw both Makkelie and Kuipers regular assistants where once also very promising referees, Van Roekel, Zeinstra, Diks and Steegstra all refereed themself at professional games in Eerste divisie (now called Keuken Kampioen divisie), Van Roekel btw is also 47.

  9. Gil as Var with Vinic so Marciniak without a nomination this week ...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I found particular to see Gil and Polish VAR in Spain for Vincic, one could have expected Spanish names. So maybe Marciniak is appointed for Granada - Manchester United on Thursday and Gill will work as VAR twice in two days? We will know tomorrow.

      Delete
    2. We will 100% not see him twice my sources said. Uefa not works in this way.

      Delete
    3. Then your sources are far away from uefa Anonymous 13:57. Similar ‘double VAR appointments’ in the same week have happened several times this season. But indeed I doubt that will be the case this time.

      Delete
    4. only one example to prove anonymous 14:37 is right!
      09/03 Juventus-Porto (Ref: Kuipers VAR: Van Boekel/Higler)
      11/03 Tottenham-Zagreb (Ref Gozubuyuk, VAR: Van Boekel/Higler)
      so marciniak is absolutely possible

      Delete
    5. Yes, it happened indeed, but those were weeks with lots of matches who needed lots of referees. Now we are at quarter-finals, with only 4 UCL and 4 UEL matches per week, so double appointments should be avoided.

      Delete
  10. Vincic deserved this but I am also disappointed not see Turpin in Porto-Chelsa. Probably he will be in this match for 2nd leg. Let's see.

  11. News: Felix Zwayer will be appointed in EL after his substitute from Aytekin last week because of an private incident. Let's see if it will be Ajax.

    1. If Zwayer gets it it will be absolutely undeserved! I really hope we wont see him again this season

    2. Zwayer had a good performance this season. I can't understand these tackles here every post. I think this isn't objective.

      Delete
    3. Performance wise even Frappart deserves a QF more than Zwayer now. Just my opinion. You can disagree....but IMO Zwayer is just very overrated

      Delete
    4. Ok, now you have an example, I can relate to that. I didn't mean to attack you. Any opinion is okay. But I also think Zwayer is strong this season - probably not allowed to include too many national performances, but he didn't have that many opportunities in the CL either. That's why it's also likely that he could get another game. Most of the others have already had many teams and therefore no longer come into question. But of course, Frappart also shows a very good season.

      Delete
    5. I wonder if all these superstars that continually hide under the name "Anonymous" have ever refereed anywhere near the level that Zwayer and Marciniak do, it is very easy to watch replays several times and criticise often offensively and not constructively with one hand on the replay button and a beer in the other. You are not only insulting the referees but also Rossetti, Dallas and Batta who make the appointments.

      Delete
    6. Tell me more about this private incident.

      Delete
    7. I have not once insulted any referee and would not do so. I am a referee myself and in my opinion I judge objectively. That is why I also questioned the comment at 15:19. But I understand your point and that's it why I think that some people say not right or objective things here about e.g. Zwayer

      (This 16:11 I didn't write)

With all due respect, it is not very common for a referee to resign "on the eve of a World Cup". I am not aware of any other case like that. If asking what was the reason for such an unusual resignation of a public person (yes, top referees are public persons!) is considered disrespectful, then I have nothing else to say...

      Delete

    15. It gets to the point of disrespectfulness when one persists in requesting information on a specific topic of which the person of interest has clearly stated, and several times for that matter, to not be willing to elaborate on.
And yes Anonymous, that’s the point we’ve reached by now IMHO.
Even if you consider top referees public persons, it’s up to them whether or not to talk about private stuff.

      Delete
    16. DutchRef: I would agree with you if (1) he would clearly state that he is not willing to elaborate - unfortunately, I did not see such statement by Mr. McGinlay not several times but once! His brief reply above about "private" fits another question about Zwayer's private incident, do I thought it was his answer to that. Also, that reply came after I asked the question yesterday. I did not see any other direct answer from him saying that he is not willing to reveal the truth after 35 years.
      (2) Reading news from around the world, I see that the independent media (websites, blogs, etc) are trying to find answers behind the scene so I thought this website would be interested to get such answers. If not, maybe The Sun or Daily Mail will be interested to find the answer.

    11. After last year i think we have seen enough matches being screwed up by Zwayer. For me he is just a mediocre elite without much personality (just like for example Karasev). There are better refs (even in Germany)

      Delete
    12. Okay your opinion. But I think you only saw him on TV and we can't say something here if we not know the person himself and so on. I think there is a hate for Zwayer and some refs without a objective meaning.

    13. I think Zwayer is ok/good in BL but in Europe he is just mediocre with many mistakes and lack of personality... With for example Makkelie and Kuipers I think its vice versa. In eredivisie they are not always that good when i see them, but in general they seem to have it in European matches...

  16. Íñigo Prieto López de Ceraín replaces Pau Cebrián Devís as AR1. The latter has not been appointed for a while, so he might be injured/with Covid.

  25. Vincic with a good first half. He’s called things really tight, not letting anything go. But overall, solid, no big incidents to talk about.

Not visible, that it's only his second CL KO match.

    2. Some whistles were really too late what gave room for players' frustration but this is the only complaint. His firm dealing with dissent is the best of whole elite category!

  27. Many of you will have seen this picture in the last few hours. AR Octavian Sovre was heavily criticized for asking Borussia Dortmund's Erving Haaland an autograph after the match, in the tunnel to the changing rooms.
Well, what most people don't know is why he did it.
He did it for a noble cause, to help raise funds for an autism center he helps with as a volunteer.
Our solidariety goes to Mr Sovre, who was criticized for no reason at all.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Even if he did it for altruistic purposes - it was unwise to do that while being in the tunnel and there are cameras watching you. Maybe he could have asked BVB's delegate for that autograph.

  28. About German refs and Euro...
In my view Brych is clear.
Aytekin would be my number 2 and I would love to see him, but I am afraid he came back from his injury too late and - why ever - his reputation in UEFA is not the best one.
Zwayer really had several problems this season, even his "Anonymous Fanclub" here should just read the comments after the last jobs. His problem is not a technical one, his problem is the lack of acceptance from the players cause he tends to act aggressive, nervous and arrogant in heated situations. Stieler is really a good talent, but he sometimes looses his head in those moments, too.
Siebert is on a very good way and might be the next German No. 1, but this Euro could come a bit too early for him.
And by the way, the German refs will survive a tournament with only one of them being nominated - like our friends from Italy, too...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Four German Elite referees but only one will go to EURO, this is crazy.

      Delete
    2. Aytekin doesn’t deserve any continental or international high competitions. He should be very happy to keep his Elite Status either...

      Delete
    3. I think Brych is 100% in and Aytekin is 100% out for EURO. I agree with you that it might be a bit early for Siebert to attend EURO, but the question is why Siebert is appointed in EL this week. Can we say that he is also under consideration of attending EURO? I think the answer is yes.

In terms of Zwayer and Stieler, its is very hard to tell. It seems committee trusts more on Stieler, considering his appointments in CL this season is far more than Zwayer's. I personally do not think Stieler is deserved to be in EURO. Almost all of his CL games this reasons at not convincing. He does not show that he is in the Elite level, although he has been given so many appointments.

Overall, my view of German referees attending EURO is: Brych 100%, Stieler 50%, Siebert 30%, Zwayer 20%, Aytekin 0%

      Delete
    4. So if you are talking about his fanclub, there you have it. Yes, I always read the 'good' (ironic) comments about him. I don't answer them cuz I know how capable, how strong, and how good Felix is to review his mistakes and to control better the game. I just think everyone has bad phase on this world and deserve to better and deserve a chance to show the progress.:)

  35. 88' correct No penalty and fantastic YC for dissent

    Good Job Lahoz

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, IMO, a good performance by Mateu Lahoz. One or two fouls I think he got wrong, and two incidents to check: a possible penalty on Neymar in the first half (live it seemed the defender played the ball. Replay showed that he didn't, but to me the intensity of the contact was not high enough to be careless. Neymar didn't ask for it either, so...) and the incident at the 88th minute, which I think he got right.

I was a bit surprised to see Bayern to show so much dissent. 2 players cautioned.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can I just point out that we saw a superb Lahoz today. The way he officiates is just amazing. The only criticism I can give is that he does not use his arms after giving a foul. He just whistles for the foul. But somehow this suits him very well. Hopefully for him no spanish team makes it to the final.

  38. Great night by Lahoz. Very strong no penalty call and handling dissent. I think favorite for final.

  43. Best Lahoz ever in my eyes especially because it wasn‘t the „old Lahoz“
Only the additional time was absolutely inacceptable

    ReplyDelete
  44. For Lahoz's sake, I hope Real falter before the final... he is on top form, he absolutely deserves that match this year.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wonderful Lahoz ! Not the old one but this kind of referee who is an obvious light on the pitch ! Congrats to him and his team (except wrong offside at 3’).

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tonight Lahoz has the final in his hands (if Real Madrid won’t arrive there).
Really suprised by AR1 Prieto López who did an amazing job. He is 30yo and tonight he was in his UCL debut: impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Mateu deserves to whistle the final. Since 2005 no Spanish referee has done it and I think it's about time. It would be very unfair for a referee of the quality of Mateu to end his career without directing the Champions League final. I am afraid that Real Madrid is going to stop them and it is very unfair. Last year it should have already called the final.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, last year was the year that he should have been chosen for the final.

Unfortunately, they gave it to Orsato and I don't know if Mateu will ever be in that great position for the final.

Man City v Dortmund - del Cerro Grande (Hernandez)

    3. Mine are
PSG v Bayern - Taylor (IV: Collum - VAR: Kavanagh)
Chelsea v Porto - Orsato (IV: Massa - VAR: Irrati)
Liverpool v Real Madrid - Turpin (IV: Bastien- VAR: Letexier)
Man City v Dortmund - Del Cerro Grande (IV; Estrada Fernandez - VAR: Hernandez Hernandez)

I would keep Kuipers, Makkelie and Cakir frozen for SF

Oliver, Kovacs, Grenfeld and Marciniak for UEL

    4. Turpin has a game on Friday night involving Lille, whereas he was already in Lille one month ago.
The only meaning to me for this quite unusual repetition was that he could not be appointed later (e.g. Saturday afternoon) and I really think we will see him next week in CL.

    5. Marciniak has a match in Polish Ekstraklasa tomorrow (Wisła-Raków). VAR: Pskit (non-Uefa)

However, I don't think Marciniak will come back to the CL or EL next week.

  49. I don't want to be a poor sport but I'm a bit astonished by the overwhelming feedback for yesterday's performance in Munich. This blog gets used to thinking in extremes - Zwayer (sorry, I must say this, the way this person is harrassed here is beyond any border), Ekberg, and others are "poor", "weak" or "disappointing" while others such as Mateu Lahoz enjoy tremendous support with many superlatives. Maybe we can leave things where they are appropriate.

What I saw was a good, standard, expected level performance. A quite calm top clash should be handled like that by a referee with Mateu's experience level from La Liga. So, fully agreed, good performance. But I also saw a hectical and nervous body language, several light whistles for quite soft contacts. I seriously think Mateu Lahoz still struggles to keep his emotions and impulses under full control. And, to be frank, as UEFA I'd be a bit concerned or at least careful to entrust such a referee with the top of the pop games. I don't want to sound too negative - it was a good performance, no dissence in that.

  50. About Mateu Lahoz one must wonder why in previous seasons he was not appointed for CL final, when there was the chance,at least twice. Now with Real Madrid is very difficult. Committee would have made a very good thing in appointing Mateu one year ago and maybe Orsato this year, so the latter could have gained even more experience (his assignment one year ago was not so much liked by many readers), and one must also underline that there are always less chances to see an Italian team in CL final than a Spanish one. Things are very complicated for Mateu, he deserves this game by years, but for some reasons, committee had different ideas before. However, wouldn't be bad, in case of Real Madrid in final, to see him in EL final.

    1. Because rosetti favours his own italian refs over better spanish ones

    2. Then, EURO final goes to Mateu:)

    3. If NL is not in the Euro final in "normal" circumstances that match has the name of Kuipers wratten all over it already IMO...

  54. I know one thing: if Real player fell down in this situation every ref would blow his whistle. VAR would say it is not clear mistake because there was contact, and penalty would stay. You can say what ever you want, but deep in your soul you know I am right!
About incredible offside decision mistake in Liverpool-Vila after goal kick - I will continue to write that many (rather most of) English refs are far beyond any criteria. They were always bad, but with VAR they are even worse.

    1. ??? You must have missed the last 5 clásicos? Also what even is this comment? We’re the decisions supportable—if not correct—or not?

  55. Gil Manzano with all crucial decisions right, but some important points to improve, specially regarding positioning and time management.

    1. I have my doubts about foul on Vinicius (free kick from which Madrid scored second goal). And he should ve added much more time than 4 minutes at the end. Thts btw common problem of the Spanish refs. But in general I agree, good performance in a very difficult fixture.

  56. What a refreshing sight... compare to the performance of Hernandez Hernandez in the 4 (FOUR) clásicos he refereed... only Gil Manzano’s second clásico by the way....

  57. Good evening everyone!
    Italian Serie A – matchday 30 analyze – Saturday 10th April
    1) Spezia – Crotone, led by mr. Simone Sozza (33yo). Sozza was promoted in League B last year and after the reunifications of the CAN he is one of the most futuristic, this was his 7th performance ever in serie A. This appointment was a bit unexpected because Crotone is at the last place and Spezia is fighting for stay in Serie A. The match was so physical and there was so much to run. There weren't doubtful incidents, but his ARs made some diffucult calls right, expecially AR2 Bercigli. This was a really good performance by all the trio: Strong 8,40!

    2) Parma – Milan, Fabio Maresca (FIFA 2nd class). This was a match who could be seen in 2 ways: a simple match between the 2nd in classification who had win ensured against 18th in classification or a match between two of the most physical and diffult to referee teams in Italy. Definitely the second option was the right one. Maresca had no difficulties, 8 yc were shown and there was a controversial situation at 61': when cameras where not filming this situation and mycrophones were shut down, Ibrahimovic had a debate with Maresca from different metres of distance. Maresca showed red card. Maresca is one of the referees who usually don't tolerate dissents. Since we don't know what Ibrahimovic said to him, I keep his decision as right. In this last performances (his 3rd in last 3 rounds) he is getting back to his standards seen in last season (where he got Milan and Turin derby, Milan-Juventus and Lazio-Inter). 8,30 for mr Maresca and his assistants.

    3) Udinese – Torino, was led by Daniele Doveri (top 3 Italian, 2nd Class FIFA) -VAR Irrati-
Daniele Doveri is for sure one of the best this season. 61' → penalty to Turin with no doubts: clear grab and full acceptance by players. There also was a controversial incident: 70', Daniele Doveri whistles a foul outside the box in favour of Udinese, but VAR Irrati notices that the supposed contact took place in the box, but not only: this contact never happened. So Irrati called Doveri to an OFR and Doveri deleted free kick and gave back the ball to Turin. First time that in Italy is seen such a situation. Well done. Anyway Doveri had no problems in match conduction. The clear mistake goes anyway to affect his mark: 7,90 (8,40).
