    1. Probably yes. In this case it would be a safe action to protect them and keep them ready for UCL final. But to me the appointment of Turpin it's risky; In case he will perform well he is a safe pair of hands for Milan/Naples-Inter/Benfica, but if something wrong happen, there are no reliable names for SF. Good luck and congratulation to all officials

  2. Surprising appointments from Rossetti Spanish referee carlos del cerro return for uefa club competitions after 2 months and no match for him in sixteen round in ucl and french referee turpin all expected him in possible semi finals milan vs inter i don't know why Rossetti put him in Munich the question is if turpin not in his good condition in Munich Rossetti will lose ucl final referee last year in semi finals ucl i don't know how Rossetti think in this condition ?

    1. Yes, del Cerro Grande is quite surprising after no previous KO match in CL or EL.

Regarding Turpin: They needed to appoint some big name there given it's a game between two of the stronges teams in the competition. The clear first leg result could not be anticipated. So only Makkelie could have been a real alternative, but then you could say the same (possibly losing a SF or even final referee).
And now, if things go normal, you still have Turpin as the leading candidate for the SF without ManCity.

  4. Referees not in QF ucl : lahoz - Taylor - makkiele

  5. Also vincic and siberet didn't referee in QF ucl i talked about wc 2022 referees from uefa

  6. Is Cerro being prepared for a farewell final?

  7. There was the need of different names in this round and here you have the "surprise" with the appointment in Milan. Of course relatively a surprise, given the experience of the Spanish. I think that one of the main arguments is the possible retirement, so maybe committee wanted to give him a very last appearance in Champions League. To understand what can follow after that. I also think that in normal conditions he wouldn't have handled this game after a so long absence from KO stage, rather, he would have started from either EL or ECL. I think we can consider him as candidate for the finals of these two competitions. It will depend on Spanish teams.
About the game, I think that Inter still very favorite team for qualification, but after the recent games, I would dare to say this can be a bit more challenging than the expected. Also, again a Spanish referee for Benfica, as somebody wrote very often here :)
Turpin in Munich a regular assignment. The expected name not appointed in this round is Makkelie, let's see whether he will get a UEL assignment (Seville?). Different for Taylor because with Oliver in Benfica - Inter, one could have predicted no second Englsh appointment in the round. He could be in EL as well (Sporting - Juventus?).

  8. Semi Champions League
    Real x City Kovacs
    City x Real Marciniak

    Milan x Inter Turpin

  9. OFF TOPIC: Is it official the list of the referees for the Uefa U21 championship ? Sometime ago somebody listed a pool of name but I don't remember any official post. Who are the candidates?

    1. Only names confirmed so far by their own national federations are Eskås, Pinheiro & Krogh.

No official info on U17 & U19 Euro either, only that Bulgarian Radoslav Gidzhenov will be a support referee in U17 along with a Belgian, a Finn & a Scotsman.

      Delete
    2. Referees for U-17 will be from : Slovenia-Slovakia-Serbia-Sweden-Northern Ireland-Azerbaijan-Poland-Turkey

      Delete
    3. If true, then they should be:

      Elçin Məsiyev AZE
      Jamie Robinson NIR
      Damian Sylwestrzak POL
      Novak Simović SRB
      Martin Dohál SVK
      David Šmajc SVN
      Adam Ladebäck SWE
      Arda Kardeşler TUR

      Delete
    4. If @Ref1's info is accurate, names should be like Euro Soccer Ref said but the Slovak referee IMO should be Michal Ocenáš (1991) instead of Dohál ans Miloš Milanović (1993) instead of Simović.

(Please let it be, from my early impressions it should be a quite decent selection)

      Delete
    5. With the correction of @Quilava the names are 90% correct. For Turkey instead of Arda Kardeşler is Atilla Karaoglan
Good luck to all selected referees

  10. OT:

    Croatia,HNL

    https://fb.watch/jZ8Da_AHrE/

Ref pulls out card then realises that if he books player that he would have 2nd YC,RC.

Then he just puts card back in his pocket and doesnt show a thing 😀

  11. OT:

Wow,Guida with his 1st Serie A match in almost a year.

    He was injured or punished?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A very long injury, suffered before the start of this season, he tried to return in serie B on December in a game after having skipped the early 5 months of 2022-23, but he gave up again, after that back only 2 weeks ago and now after 2 serie B games finally in serie A.

      Delete
    2. Such a pity as he was a very strong candidate for promotion to Elite...

      Delete
    3. Guido was extremely strong in many aspects Yesterday. But what was that for an Penalty in Minute 56? No pictures showed the evidence that the ball was on the arm. It showed more that it was probably on the shoulder. I think there is no other league where such penalty is possible :). But handball is a bit different in Serie a is my Feeling.
What about your thougts on yesterdays Performance?

      Delete
    4. Indeed no evidence of handball in my opinion as well, the check before calling referee to OFR was one of the longest we saw in serie A this season. You know, the very particular attention to handball contributed to that, but I would easily say that analyzing a video for more than 4 minutes and then still missing a conclusion can never mean clear and obvious mistake. In other countries play on would be accepted, but not in Italy... as for the rest, good performance, I agree.

  13. Turpin's AR2 wears FIFA bage instead of UEFA

    ReplyDelete
  14. What. Red card now offside and no ref card

    ReplyDelete
  15. Messy, albeit correct decision in the end by Turpin

    ReplyDelete
  16. Poor show team Turpin. Turpin has to ask AR1 if offside and AR1 needs to state clearly he thinks offside before showing a RC/giving the foul. At least the correct decision in the end

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think they have a problem with a communication set

    ReplyDelete
  18. Del Cerro disallowed a goal scored by Inter for a rather soft push in my opinion, but one can have different view. Excellent ONSIDE by AR2 for 1-1 right now. In the middle, some small moments of tension with the Spanish called to calm down contenders.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Some set of eyes to see that in real time

    ReplyDelete
  20. Any comments on Turpin's penalty decision?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. His best moment of the half. Outstretched arm, Shot on target, so YC and penalty correct. Good delayed whistle to see outcome of the shot first too

      Delete
    2. All true - on the other hand: Upamecano holds his hands behind his back, turns around and streches one hand to keep his balance - with no sight of the ball.

      Delete
    3. Correct penalty and YC for me as well.

      Delete
  21. Only 2 minutes of added time in Munich! How…?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The penalty alone was more than that, plus the earlier check re offside/RC mess. Agree strongly, it was too little

      Delete
  22. It think Turpin has lost control of this game

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And part of the reason is his inconsistent foul detection, I think.

Although "lost control" is too much IMO.

      Delete
    2. I cannot agree that he has "lost control", however his performance definitely feels "shaky". His foul detection does seem inconsistent, but he also lacks a bit in terms of prevention and using personality skills/authority to cool things down when needed IMO. It's a standard issue for him from time to time, depending on the nature of a match, but it seems quite visible to me tonight.

  23. Turpin loses it. (Not the first time I've used this phrase with Turpin.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. 5 YC from Turpin in first half, its really rare

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. + 1 YC for coach Tuchel = 6

      Delete
    2. But they were well chosen, I think
      1) First harder foul - setting the limit, no further fouls of that kind happened
      2) Dissent by the coach - also setting the limit after having warned him early
      3) Handball, shot on goal - mandatory
      4) Time wasting - good to intervene early
      5) & 6) Player conflict with a small riot - maybe manageable without cards, but one card each is the expected decision

      Delete
    3. How many yellow cards was shown to Tuchel during the match? Clearly, as you noted, he was shown the yellow card in first half just after the canceled sent-off. But UEFA also reports a yellow card in minute 84 and then yellow-red in minute 86...

      Delete
    4. For Freekick, Excellent question. It was indeed confusing. See the scene here with the YC at 18.48. https://fullmatchsports.cc/bayern-munchen-vs-manchester-city-full-match-ucl-2022-23/?tab=first-half

      Delete
    5. Continued... And see here the scene at 83:16. Who receives the YC ? I think it's MCI's #10, Jack Grealish, who kicking the ball hard away to save time on a throw-in and not Tuchel, even the German TV director doesn't know : https://fullmatchsports.cc/bayern-munchen-vs-manchester-city-full-match-ucl-2022-23/?tab=second-half

  25. Clear penalty in Munich, Upamecano's elbow gets in the way. Correct YC as well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think Turpin has been brilliant in the first half. Of course, the red card / offside incident should've been avoided and a free kick to Bayern should've been awarded for a push before the shot in 29' but the overall focused approach and management of all hot moments has been fantastic. For example, YC to 22BAY for team's PI after three fouls before (7', 9', 10'), management of conflicts (20', 45+2'), YC for time-wasting (44'). I hope he can continue like this in the second half.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Euro Soccer Ref, you shouldn't be too ironic with Turpin!

      Delete
  27. Rare to see Turpin showing that many cards.

    But all of them deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 54': Missed penalty for Benfica (Martinez vs Aursnes)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To me more penalty than play on, should be OK no VAR intervention.

      Delete
  29. 61' No reason for Turpin to stop play, not a head injury nor near goalmouth. I think he has had a reasonable game so far, but has given the players enough moments to be (often rightly) frustrated with him, which hasn't helped his overall image

    ReplyDelete
  30. Penalty for Bayern: Handball probably clearly correct with current UEFA instructions, but IMO not really what football wants...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That was a clear unnatural position.

      Delete
  31. Despite the tie is clearly decided Turpin’s decisions are hardly accepted by players and team officials.

    ReplyDelete
  32. UEFA clearly knew what they were doing when they didn't give Turpin games like this leading up to his UCL-final

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good game so far for Del Cerro. I always find him much more better than Mateu, but he never reached any European Final I guess. Could he be one of the candidate for EL final at least this year?

    ReplyDelete
  34. @jleekens I agree with you they knew if they had done that his chances of doing UCL final last season would have been slim

    ReplyDelete
  35. I wonder what Clément Turpin has done to someone to cause such exaggerated criticism after a good performance. Okay, his performances in the past were often far from optimal but today he was really good, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, maybe that is because you can make a lot of correct decisions in a game (and some clearly wrong ones) and show a weak and below average game managing at the same time. That is what we saw from Turpin tonight.

      Delete
    2. And to add, his pedantic appearance easily evokes irritations and lack of acceptance even despite technical and tactical accuracy (which was on an average level tonight Imho).

      Delete
    3. I have the same opinion as Philipp S in his comment below regarding Turpin's performance tonight: there was something missing in his overall authority and management of this game, at least for me (based on a personal feeling). If I correctly understand, HaGo refers to similar aspects. However, I can definitely agree with you regarding some exaggerated comments, which appear regularly after Turpin's games unfortunately. This was never a bad performance, let me be clear about that. I just feel he could (should?) have done better in certain aspects.

      Delete
  36. I think, it was overall a mixed bag by Turpin with some quite positive (e.g. card management, first penalty) and some negative aspects (e.g. foul detection in first half, authority, missed second penalty live) in his performance.

Especially with this fresh impressions, I don't think, that it would be wise to give him a Milan derby CL SF 2nd leg.
    So my current idea is:
    Milan-Inter: Taylor / Orsato
    Real-ManCity: Soares Dias / Marciniak
    Final: Makkelie
I think, if he is clearly the best solution, breaking the rule for Orsato would be fine. And he is so near to the end of his career, that ruining his relation to one of the domestic clubs would not be as bad as for a younger referee.
If one wants to speculate on a final for Taylor, Gil Manzano could get his SF instead.
If Makkelie is injured too long, Marciniak needs to be planned for the final, so I would then see Kovacs and Turpin as the options for ManCity-Real.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Is there any official confirmation that Makkelie is injured?

    2. Trust me... LAHOZ IS IN MILAN ...

      Delete
    3. To be frank, I would definitely like to see Orsato doing the Milan derby. Maybe it is impossible, but from a practical point of view, I don't see any reason not to appoint him, there is no conflict of interest IMO.

      Delete
    4. Lahoz in Milan? maybe but i'm not sure

      Delete
    5. Orsato + Inter = asking for troubles. Rosetti is way too smart to make such a high risk, little reward move

      Delete
  37. Referee pools in my opinion for each match (favorite in CAPS with % of chances of appearance):

    Real - City : KOVACS 45 / Dias 40 / Letexier 15
    City - Real : MARCINIAK 80 / Makkelie 20

    Milano Clash 1 : TAYLOR 70 / Oliver 25 / Lahoz 5
    Milano Clash 2 : LAHOZ 40 / Turpin 35 / Orsato 20 / Taylor 5

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think, Lahoz or Taylor can get the 2nd leg of the Milan derby, because of the Spanish and English team in the other SF.

      Delete
  38. About Bayern - City crucial incidents:

    1) Since AR1 delayed the flag, Turpin should have waited for ONSIDE confirmation before issuing RC to player. Poor management, but all correct decisions (if no offside RC).
    2) Correct penalty for handball in first half, well spotted with excellent positiong. What I'm watching more and more in recent games is thi attitude by some players to put arms behind the back but only before the shot, then once ball comes, arms are moved in unnatural positions and so punishable. This seems to be something that players can't avoid, they are forced by instinct.
    3) Penalty after OFR, this was definitely impossible to see live, correct decision, arm in unnatural position.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't understand why people insist with Lahoz. It's pretty clear since the beginning of the KO stage and you have to accept it. His UCL time is over, I am sure that Rosetti sent him also a clear message. He is a useful referee for UEL and will retire at the end of the season. The expected Man Utd-Juventus semifinal probably will be his last dance. Now all the focus is on Gil Manzano.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In the QF, we saw a French referee team providing a high level of technical accuracy and decision making. All KMI's correct, but a very low acceptance by players. Shaky (man-)management and control. This surprised me a bit considering the scoreline.

And the Polish team rather the opposite: some missed KMI's (missed PK, encroachment, etc.) which potentially influenced the scoreline, but always in control. It must be possible to see him again with a different VAR?

    1. - Anthony Taylor in a 1st leg of the Milan derby seems a locked choice. Unless he has a bad performance tonight.
      - I can't see Turpin in a heated return of the Italian derby after his QF yesterday, but repeating him with Man City is not a problem and Real Madrid won't have any complaints with Turpin, too.
      - I can see Marciniak again, maybe with other VAR, and he is still a final candidate.
      - Makkelie is sort of a mystery. He worked in 2nd league last Sunday. If available, they will use him in one of the final 3 matches.
      - As much as I like Mateu, I don't think we will see him in a SF UCL. After what happened at the WC, he didn't work in UCL KO-stage, and Rosetti always preferred DCG for some reason.
      - Breaking the rules for Orsato: can see it happening. There are enough available names for City-Real. And one more advantage, Orsato can handle the return game which is the most challenging game (on paper).
      - Kovacs was excellent last season in his City - Real SF and in Liverpool - Madrid (R16). He is a very good fit for a City-Real 1st leg. The return requires one of the most experienced names. Vincic after his UEL final can't be forgotten for a 1st leg, but City will remember his weak performance in R16.
      - Final will be Marciniak or Makkelie.

Real - City 1st leg: Kovacs / Vincic
      Real - City 2nd leg: Turpin / Orsato / Marciniak / Makkelie

      Milan derby 1st leg: Taylor
Milan derby 2nd leg: Orsato / Marciniak / Makkelie

  41. My prediction:
    Real - City Kovacs
    City - Real Orsato

    Milan - Inter Turpin
    Inter - Milan Vincic

Final: Taylor (if no City) / Marciniak (if Inter-City) / Makkelie (if Milan-City)

      Final: Makkelie

  42. Well, according to the actual guidelines about handballs, the 2 PKs today may have been - more or less - correct, but these guidelines are getting more and more ridicolous on the fields... There MUST be a new one asking the ref's only to go for PK, if the handballplay happened deliberately or directly led to a goal. Otherwise the managers will start to train their players more and more often to deliberately shoot against arms and hands and that will destroy the attractiveness of offensive play.
