It looks quite clear, given the VAR assignment and the second match to Letexier in a few days, that the French is replacement for Makkelie for some reasons. Indeed I expected him in Lisbon. It was reported he had a game on Sunday in domestic league, maybe an injury?
ReplyDeleteLetexier also refereed last Friday in Ligue 1. Just one day rest after his UCL game. Clear replacement. Ironically how some people immediately destroyed Rosetti.

DeleteClearly, Letexier's appointment in CL was not planned. I think committee chose such a path after Jovanovic's poor performance in Italy. Also, it's a big surprise that Makkelie didn't take part in any of the matches because he only officiated one display at the knockout stage.
ReplyDeleteYes, the poor performance by Jovanovic in Italy - England can be reason for some changes, indeed the Serbian is missing in quarterfinals, and before EURO qualifiers, he was a fully expected name.

On the other hand, he already had Sporting in this KO stage, so maybe rather this game is a replacement (for Makkelie?)
The other three are normal appointments. Mateu and Soares Dias could maybe apply for a CL SF with a great performance. Taylor probably just needs to be solid to get another CL game.
Vincic maybe a light injury? He didn’t work in his domestic league for some time.

Vincic is appointed this Saturday and also he has been recently, so I don't know where you got this info from.

DeleteYes Anonymous, that is the main issue. Should be avoidable, but considering the Italian powers…And Taylor’s absence in QF UCL suggests that they are saving him for a full Italian tie.

The neutrality Versus the involved teams is almost never respected. In the past many many times in the first leg were appointed referees of the same country of the teams running in the other semifinal. The only problem could be that Orsato will see again Real or Chelsea in two rows without other matches in the middle. It depends how he will perform tonight and if there will be controversy. Same is for Taylor, could easily do the semifinal involving italian teams.

DeleteOrsato can't officiate Inter due to Inter - Juventus in 2018, he has handled again the team only 2 times in the last 5 years for this reason and never in a big game.

ReplyDeleteFirst step by Hategan in returning to pitch officiating, he handled a training game. According to the article, he is going very careful in the process, without forcing, further medical checks are needed, but it seems he will do that. Excellent news.
Yes, today another step was succesfully made. It was a friendly game in his hometown Arad betwween the first league club UTA Arad and their U18 team. A couple of months ago, late March - early April was the initial date expected for return, but he decided to wait a little bit longer. The latest infos says that he will wait until summer, in order to officiate more friendly games between teams in the training pre-season and to take part in the referees detailed physical tests. However, the expected decision is to come back on the pitch.
DeleteI have to say that his work as VAR is very appreciated domestically by everyone: media, fans, teams. He had so many excellent calls, and often received widespread praise. I can't remeber anything missed and definitely hadn't had any wrong OFR. Obviously, I would like to see him coming back on the pitch, but if he will decide to focus on work as VAR, I expect UEFA to trust him as VAR instead of AVAR starting from the next season. And he can achieve big also in this role given Kovacs's prospects for future.
Hategan had a bad game as a VAR in Rapid - CFR Cluj, with 2 soft penaltyes for the home team by Catalin Popa. And it was a huge scandal in that game, also Vassaras said that the second penalty was a mistake and Hategan didn't call Popa for a OFR. And after that game, I didn't saw Hategan as VAR at CFR Cluj games.
DeleteSaying that Orsato should do the Milan derby in the UCL is just out of sheer emotion or excitement of the possibility to see something out of the ordinary. Absolutely nothing logical about it and UEFA knows better than to attempt it.

DeleteI disagree. He missed a clear handball penalty in the first half. And about that intervention late in the game. Yes, his boots were high, yes a red card was definitely possible but looking at pace and impact, was this VAR challenge really necessary?
DeleteI think if the player had gone down and rolled around there would be no debate and a clear, clear red for SFP. So why should it be different as he stayed on his feet? Definite VAR stuff for me

So I would just replace Letexier by Gil Manzano in my predictions and keep Schärer - who BTW has a domestic match this weekend, so seems to be recovered.
I think Rosetti bottled it with the Taylor appointment. I see Taylor as an extremely reliable referee, but tonight his style did not match with the emotional players from both teams. Both sides had a lot of southern american and southern european players and they were not impressed with the calm and icey style of Taylor. He tried to manage it to his best skills, but it didn't work in that game. That could have been avoided by appointing a more southern european referee, like they did last week.
ReplyDeleteNow, appointments for last 4 UCL very difficult. I think Marciniak and Kovacs voor RMA-MCI are very clear but for the Italian derby I wouldn't really know who to appoint. Personally, I would definitely go for Mateu Lahoz in one of the legs and then Turpin in the other.
For me also a punishable handling. He controlled the ball with his arm.

Are we talking about a touch with his hand in the beginning or about the touch on the upper arm / shoulder at the end?
DeleteThe hand would be punishable due to the outstretched arm, but can one be sure, that there was any contact?
For the shoulder I hope, that this not punishable even with the strict UEFA guidelines (and also borderline, whether it was even in the forbidden area of the arm).
