  1. So, all expected according to your predictions and no Spanish referees. It is possible that Spain will stay with only one CL KO stage appearance, very hard to find when (if) it happened the last time... at least we can draw conclusion that Georgia - Luxembourg was not liked by committee, otherwise an appointment would have been surely made. Possible to see the Spanish in Europa League.

About the appointments, Orsato with the very big game in Manchester, he is not candidate for CL final, so for sure committee this time will not take the risk of losing a name in case of controversial performance. Easy to say that the game in Munich for Makkelie is a good one to keep the hope for the final, so far two appearances in CL KO stage and you can see that a certain path is followed. The game in Munich is very open after first leg, but surely a less risky than other games. Since I think Makkelie was unlucky in past when he got some games, I think this choice for him seems to be definitely good. We will see his performance.

    1. The last season in which Spain did not provide a referee from the quarter-finals onwards was in 2007/2008. At that time, however, two round of 16 matches were refereed by Luis Medina Cantalejo and Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez. The path would have been paved for them: Spain had only one team in the quarter-finals, a semi-final first leg would also have been possible, as would have been the final.

  2. Some considerations about the CL semifinals, it will be very hard for committee to decide which French referee should be appointed. If you ask me, full choice is for Letexier, but Turpin is possible as well (hard to think there will be two French assignments, and we must wait for PSG) Then, to follow we have Marciniak as locked name, no doubts. In case Orsato could get another appointment, but now I think it will depend on some aspects. Zwayer another safe pair of hands, I would say, and Michael Oliver could get a game as well.
With some, let's say, "odd" appointments so far, committee managed to have a good choice for all the remaining games, based also on the nationality of the teams that will qualify to semifinals.

    1. We truly have a lot of options which is a win, no matter how one likes some appointments. But I think only one spot is really open. We can expect Marciniak in a second leg, for me Orsato is guaranteed as well in his last season. With Turpin in EL now I am also sure he will be in CL. So only 1 game left. I can see it either being a consolation prize for Vincic/Makkelie (whoever doesnt get the final) or indeed Zwayer who would deserve it. I dont expect Oliver, commitee clearly doesnt trust him too much. Kovacs has already 2 good games, Taylor rather unlikely but even more possible. Letexier for me would be too much too quick. My guess would be Letexier in an EL SF 2nd leg.

    2. Oliver won't get a 2nd leg in the CL. NOT because of conflict with English team. He can't handle pressure games with lots of emotions of European teams. He bottled the MC vs Liverpool game recently when a CLEAR penalty in waning moments of game. He doesn't have the make up.

  3. As of last season, Refcom is making the knockout appointments on merit and we can only praise that. The Spanish refs were rejected. Peljto and Jovanovic were not good enough.

I do wonder why Orsato gets the big game and not Turpin, for example. I had my doubts about Turpin's management. A very experienced ref (#3 of Europe?) gets a 1st leg in UEL, PSG is still in the mix and normally Turpin has Orsato/Marciniak in front of him in the semi’s as well (unless they have very poor performances). I think, I’d have assigned Turpin to a big QF return. However, there is big focus on Letexier as well. I guess the committee had a strong preference to further ‘develop’ and reward Letexier in Real-City. Letexier had a very good performance and you can indeed conclude that the latter might get a 1st leg semi CL on merit and Turpin could be used in a hot UEL-return instead. France are lucky to have two good referees as this will also keep Turpin on his toes, like in the Kuipers/Makkelie era, Taylor/Oliver, etc. It works. I miss that in Italy and Netherlands now. Orsato is not challenged at all. I also hope that Gözübüyük will improve to challenge his Elite colleague a bit more...

Good appointment for Makkelie. Interesting that Sander Van der Eijk is the 4th official. After the draw, I identified Bayern-Arsenal as the most suitable for a final candidate. This game seems the least ‘risky’ as English/German teams are normally football-focused, at the same time a game that can be very open and dynamic. In the meantime most eyes are on City-Real. It had to be Kovacs or Makkelie in München. After Herbert Fandel in Greece, an Italian observer for Makkelie. I guess, we can cautiously conclude there is some focus on Makkelie, and also on Taylor (observed by Kuipers in Paris).

  4. So there it is. The fifth appointment of an Italian referee in CL KO stage this year. That is more than 20%. You guys think that is right?

    1. We can condemn it or call it favoritism, but there aren't too many alternatives. To add, no Italian teams in the competition...

So far, Refcom worked on a meritocracy basis. No Spaniards (despite Carballo) confirm that. Apparently they were satisfied with Guida and Orsato. However, Kruzliak deserved a game in the CL as well. But apparently Rosetti didn’t dare to send Kruzliak to Atletico Madrid and decided to appoint Guida.

I did notice in the group stage that Italian refs had more games than any other Top-5 country and I must say, at that early stage I found it more disturbing than now.

      Delete
    2. I think the question is whether or not the fact that they (Guida and Massa) are Italian plays a part in the fact that they are selected for these matches. And I believe it does, especially in the case of Guida and I would have preferred referees from other countries.

      Delete
    3. For sure the fact that all Italian teams were all eliminated played a role, in Europa League there are at moment three Italian teams and another in Conference League. But of course, like the management of Spanish referees, this doesn't explain everything. As Unknown said, indeed committee must have liked Guida performance in his first appearance (about Orsato and Massa, they were expected in all cases, of course more the former than the latter...), and maybe we can maybe draw conclusions that other referees didn't manage to officiate that game instead of him.
We can mention Jovanovic and Peljto among others, starting from a CL assignment in Round of 16, they could have managed to get a second one in case of very liked performance, I think. Other options? Yes, I think Kruzliak was the only unlucky referee to stay out from Champions League, and he deserved a game, but I'm sure committee will appoint him at least until semifinals (let's see, I think we will read his names tomorrow rather in Europa League).
But now for some reasons I'm convinced, for the high percentage of Italian assignments, that Orsato could miss the standard semifinal appointment in favor of a referee from another country, that would be I think fair for him, and officiating Manchester City - Real Madrid as very last appearance in Champions League wouldn't be so bad (indeed this can be his last appointment of the career in the competition, if not used in semifinals).

56' Dark YC QAT, I don't think if he gave Qatari player RC, VAR would intervene, regardless of what colour poor display from him to "show" RC on his pocket

90+6" OFR, clear missed RC, seems like Kabirov got input from AR1 for YC and then Sivakorn called him

    1. I hope expert on this blog can give their opinions about KMI from the match. Even when many of us already known there's no hope for AFC as long as referee like Sivakorn get very big trust from the refcom :)

      Delete
    2. Would not call me expert, but incident in 56 is solved correctly with YC for my taste. That is not a very dark one. Of course unlucky that the referee firstly grabs the RC, but it can happen.
2YC is a horrible mistake and only given because of very unsporting behaviour of player. But that should never happen and must probably be the end of a tournament. You have to whistle what you see and he could not have seen a YC incident there.

    4. First penalty: very clear, not a big mistake by AR2, tight ONSIDE, but better to stay down with flag. Good decision by referee.
Second: without different replay, it's hard to say, penalty should have been confirmed. Looks like a late challenge, then maybe just slightly touching ball but after having impeded opponent.
Third: very hard to say if VAR stuff or not, I think very minimal leg movement by defender, but you have it. Most of the contact is created by attacker going against him. For sure this is a penalty that you have to support once whistled by referee on the pitch, but I tend to say not a clear and obvious mistake deserving 100% intervention. The intervention in this case can be maybe more justified because with wrong offside detected before, officials couldn't judge properly the situation, but still...

  8. Very quiet match in Munich for Makkelie.
Both teams focused on playing football, just a few fouls.
One particular moment was in 35', when Bayern tried to resume the game without referee's permission, but everything was immediately under control. I think we can expect a more challenging second half,

    ReplyDelete
  9. Orsato with full control.

1 YC to Carvajal for SPA,other than that one sided match where we have small amount of fouls.

It can't get easier than this,so expecting much more challenging 2nd half for Orsato and crew.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Orsato is managing to keep a consistent foul detection, many play-on, high rhythm thanks to that. Let’s see how it goes

  11. In Bayern - Arsenal game, can somebody explain to me in 50:40 min how the player treated for injury went out and did a straight throw in? Am I missing something or ?

  12. First error - if so can be called - at 78’: missed corner kick for City after a slight deviation from GK

    ReplyDelete
  13. 88' same error of team Makkelie, missed corner kick for Arsenal. Should have been seen by AR1. But otherwise nothing to mention.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Definitely a more challenging second half for Makkelie. Good performance with all correct bookings, including the ones for protests. Match was open until the end, nevertheless Arsenal didn't convince me that they could have scored (personal opinion). I saw a great alertness by the Dutch until the end with that quick free kick execution and then the corner kick in the very last seconds.
More generally, I saw that he has adapted a certain style that allows him to be sure about the call he is about to make, difficult to explain in other words, but you can see that a final decision coming from him, is elaborated.
Candidate for a next game, we will see which one :)

    1. Makkelie was good, but never really challenged. But yes, he showed the expected cards and didn't allow unsporting behaviour. So good performance!
Do you think he has chances for the final? Only if PSG is not involved? Otherwise only one SF also including Bayern is possible.

      Delete
    2. Good performance from Makkelie in a normal match. The last 20 minutes were more challenging. He had full control and showed strong leadership. This was the Danny we like to see. The only mistake was from AR1 with the missed corner kick. All cards were correct and at the right time, and his calmness and variation in body language ensure an active and focused demeanor. In Germany, they say top performance. Now he has to hope PSG will not reach the final.

  15. If real Madrid go through tonight are we looking at Taylor for the final

    ReplyDelete
  16. Easy game for Orsato, but he’s sloppier than he used to be. Twice he pointed for a goal kick and had to be convinced by someone that it was in fact a corner, he’s gotten in the way of the ball or players multiple times, and just now he pointed the wrong way for a free kick. In the big picture, these are not big problems, of course. His experience is showing in his ability to keep this football-focused game flowing with plentiful advantages. But his age is also showing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If I‘m not wrong, he had some issues in goal kick vs. corner decisions in his last match too, also having been "overruled" by his ARs.

A typical Orsato tonight: excellent manager, having a feeling for the match. Speaking about fitness, if we see how Orsato was moving in extra time, it’s fair to say that he was happy that the match did not last any longer. Seemed like he was not far from getting a cramp.

      Delete
    2. I also noticed it, that you could see he was very tired. But as you mentioned he managed the game perfectly, and what a respect he has from the players! Probably from the current Elite referees it's only him and Marciniak who has that charisma and level of acceptance. (What an easy game though!)
However I started to wonder as so many users wrote that he is the frontrunner for the Euro final, if he gets it with this pyhsical shape, I don't think that's fair. He is clearly beyond his peak in this aspect, and in my opinion the best has to get the final. And physical abilities are part of the game more than ever. I really like him and admire him, but that's just my feeling. :-)

      Delete
    3. I noticed during extra time too. He looked like how I run when I cramp my calf. I wonder if that might have already happened to him.

      Delete
    4. I agree with all of you, his age and fitness issues were more and more visible as the game progressed into the ET. However, this game also showed his huge experience IMO: he managed to ensure perfect control from the very beginning of the game, but also contributed to high game flow and rhythm with some advantages and generally consistent foul detection, pretty optimal for this match. Like Ref_1707, I also noticed a certain "tendency" toward goal kick/corner mistakes in a couple of his recent games, maybe as a consequence of mental and/or physical fatigue as he nears the end of a long career. His disciplinary line seemed good to me, I cannot remember any missed cards.

As always, it is worth noticing his exemplary managerial skills which assure full control over the proceedings. Like Peter, I would also like to highlight a huge respect he has among the players, something usually not visible on such a level.

All things considered, it was a good performance for me, but in a less challenging context than I expected (the game can even be described as easy). However, judging from everything seen tonight, it does seem that a long and illustrious career is slowly, but steadily coming to an end. I admit I'm more than biased, but I would certainly like for that end to be something special at the upcoming EURO.

      Delete
    5. Yes, the game was easy, but why?
Teams were more focused to play but in the 2H Real players tried to protest and exaggerate contacts and Orsato could not care less. The game remained easy because of his managerial skills, not because it was simply easy

  18. My predictions for semi finals referees:- Bayern Munich Vs Real Madrid ( 1 st leg : Turpin & 2 nd leg : Marciniak ) & Broussia Dortmund Vs PSG ( 1 st leg : Oliver & 2 nd leg : Orsato ) - final: Taylor

    1. My early prediction
      Bayern-Real: Taylor / Kovacs
Dortmund-PSG: Massa or Orsato / Marciniak
      Final: Vincic or Makkelie

Options for Dortmund-PSG are actually quite limited. You can go the "boring" way with Orsato (who had BVB in R16, but probably not a huge problem) and Marciniak, but basically all other big names aren't possible (unless you repeat from QF).

  19. Technical mistake gone unnoticed in Munchen.
Tomiyasu gets injured, the therapist comes in (he lost his lenses). Makkelie, correctly, invites him to leave the field of play. He goes out, but when it is time to come back he receives the referee's authorization, but before entering the pitch he takes the throw-in with which the game is actually restarted.
Technically, this is a mistake, if i'm not wrong or if i have not missed something. The minute is 51'.

    1. Law 5 - The referee

      “The referee:
      - stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play. An injured player may not be treated on the field of play and may only re-enter after play has restarted; if the ball is in play, re-entry must be from the touchline but if the ball is out of play, it may be from any boundary line.”

The law mentions ‘re-entering the field of play l’ and does not state anything about being allowed to take a restart (from outside the field of play). In the most textual, literal way there was no technical mistake.

  20. Anthony Taylor had the best evening of any ref in Europe.

  21. My prediction:
    BVB v PSG - 1st: Oliver, 2nd: Orsato
    Bayern v RMA - 1st: Vincic, 2nd: Marciniak
    Final: Taylor

    1. Swap Turpin for Vincic and I think this is correct.

  22. My predictions
    Bayern-Real: Kovacs - Marciniak
    Dortmund-PSG: Sanchez Martinez - Oliver
Final: I don't have much conviction to say who will be at Wembley. Quoting Taylor seems easy now. But Vincic and Makkelie also appear to be assessed by UEFA.

  23. Just watched the games of Orsato and Makkelie. In some way, there is a huge "contrast" with Kovács indeed.
Although the Romanian nailed his KMI decisions, some called his personality too clinical, grumpy or not very empathetic and I can see why, after I watched Orsato and Makkelie.

Sure, the Italian and Dutch were helped by the players (fair teams), and they have a long serving reputation, however you can clearly see them making a CONNECTION with players. The captains in particular. They have excellent soft skills as well and the players obviously like and appreciate them as a person. They can be a "player's friend", helping injured players up or have a chat. Makkelie got a (sort of) friendly pat on the back when he issued the 1st yellow card. :D But despite their connection with the players, these refs can make decisions isolated, and if needed, very firm. They can adapt their style and switch effortlessly from a player's friend to a more cold and distanced, authoritarian, if the match requires it. Definitely a quality that Kovacs is lacking imo.

  24. Anthony Taylor will be the referee of this year's Champions League final, and Szymon Marciniak, Danny Makkelie from the Netherlands, Daniele Orsato from Italy and Slavko Vincić from Slovenia will be the referees of the semi-final matches!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Makes sense.
If Taylor indeed gets the final, the best thing they can do is assign Vincic and Makkelie to a semi, as ‘consolidation’ after they both had a quiet knock-out stage.

I don’t like the idea of Oliver in a semi to be honest. And in fact, the English VAR has to be shielded too. I guess Oliver/Atwell get a low ranked game with Taylor as 4O.

      Delete
    2. Oliver would be impossible most likely with BVB after controversy in their match vs Ajax most likely as well

      Delete
  25. Makkelie will officiate the match between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, but it is not known whether it will be on April 30 in Germany or May 8 in Spain.

    1. Immediately repeating Bayern would be unusual though.
And there are actually a lot of good options for this pairing: Kovacs, Taylor, Turpin, Vincic

So I think, it's more likely that Makkelie doesn't get a SF (and hopes for a BVB win...)

      Delete
    2. @Philipp: it depends. If Taylor is already the “fixed” choice for the final, they have to consolidate Makkelie and Vincic after a clean and quiet season.

It would be unusual to repeat teams, but we have seen it before. As long as the teams don’t have a problem with it, everything seems possible nowadays.

To add, the four reported names are all neutral options. UEFA may wants to avoid using e.g. Turpin (even in a 1st leg) when PSG’s odds for the final are very high.

      Delete
  26. If the shape and health of the referees match, it is 100% confirmed!

  27. @ Samuel: any idea who will be the referee in return between Leverkusen/WH vs Italian team? There it has to be a very experienced referee too.

Turpin is possible if Marseille are out.
