  2. No spanish referees for the 18 games of this matchday. First time since when?

Which makes it even more remarkable, of course.
Apparently Gil Manzano is not seen as ready as Marciniak to return.

    2. I think this could be a strong sign that Gil Manzano is #1 and they wait for him to return. Otherwise there would be strong(er) focus on one of the others Spaniards (Hdz Hdz for example)

What about Trabzobspor-Fenerbahce match, plenty controversies and desicions that went against Fener and Mourinho is already posting some of those decisions on his social's.

Missed RC,harsh penalty for Trabzon and very obvious penalty not given to Fenerbahce in very chaotic match.

Ref was O.Cakir, but the person that stole the was A.Karaoglan, man in VAR that made every possible decision and turned blind eye against Fenerbahçe.

So now again, conspiracy theories can begin...

    ReplyDelete

    1. The man of the match was Atila Karaoglan, the VAR official. The invisible man," Mourinho declared. "The on-field referee was just a kid. Atila Karaoglan was the true player of the match. We don’t want to see him again in our games, either on the field or in the VAR room. I’d heard things before coming here, but I didn’t expect it to be this bad."

Mourinho didn’t stop there, launching further criticism in his typical fiery style.

"We played against a good team who fought well, but our real battle is with the system," he continued. "When I say that, I speak for all Fenerbahçe fans. That’s why we celebrated the way we did. People warned me about what happens here, but they only told me half of it. If I’d known everything, I might not have come."

The Fenerbahçe boss also had something to say about the penalty awarded to Trabzonspor.

"Was the VAR official having coffee at that moment? How could he miss it? Or maybe he was drinking tea when he failed to give us a penalty. We need to talk about the injustice that’s been happening here for years. We are clean," Mourinho emphasized.

    2. Did he comment about disallowed obvious goal of Trabzonspor? Or did he mention about the foul on Trabzonspor player before the penalty he is asking for? Did he mention about why he is not sent off despite his swearing to opposition player, being out of his area so many times? I only agree with him the first penalty given to Trabzonspor was soft. Mourinho is Mourinho. I lost all my respect to him in recent years.

  6. Somehow i knew that Kovacs will be in Milano, when the observer was released. Paniashivili is a regular observer for the elite referees. And is a change in Kovacs team, the AR2 George Neacsu was replaced by Ferencz Tunyogi, after mistakes made in NL and last stage in CL.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Marciniak back and he gets the big game, in this case I can understand committee, they will say to Atlético "We have sent to you the best referee". I made predictions without knowing that he was available for this matchday, but I must be honest, after the famous incident involving PSG game I wouldn't have expected him here. Nevertheless, the reason should be that Marciniak is well known as current best referee, so Atlético will praise this assignment (something that committee cares more than other arguments...).
Kovacs will be in Milan, another nice game for him after the good performance in Real - Borussia. Glad to see Rumsas again, and this should be his only second game in group stage, I think. Could have got more so far, but as we discussed, for some periods he seems out for unknown reasons (it happened in past as well).
Interesting to see about Eskas, after a performance with two evident crucial mistakes, still trust by committe, with another CL game. Of course he has been mostly good in all displays so far, and one can agree that a weak game taken alone, is not an argument for an immediate switch to Europa League. Important to give trust in the process of development. I think different speech about Schaerer, not appointed in this set, but both him and the VAR made a mistake in last CL appearance.
Normal assignments for Massa, Grinfeeld and Stieler, the German gained more CL games thank also to the new format of CL, otherwise he would have got some EL games instead.
Obrenovic back in CL in a game that could become challenging, but I think the argument for assigning him is the names of the teams involved, not a big clash, but a quite good German - Italian clash. Maybe it will be the most challenging game for him in recent times, we will see.
And then we have Balakin: a CL assignment every now and then, definitely not clear plans. What committee can do with him, the perspective and so on. He just gets CL, but it's hard to say which reputation actually he has. This one with Trefoloni as observer can be more important as observation than his previous appearances, though.
No Spanish referees: Gil Manzano back after the injury is getting game after game in La Liga, but it seems as he has not still reached best form. First game was a card festival, in the second he also made an OFR for a wrong penalty. Impossible to get immediately CL, but we can guess that there will be "many" Spanish referees and VARs in Europa and Conference League on Thursday.
Very last remark about VARs: it seems as some are from Nyon (van Boekel, among others, and the other Dutch appointed twice in two days) while others should be on site. Example: the full Ukrainian crew in Prague...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Interesting, that several (8, I think) referees from CL MD3 were used again on CL MD4, but nobody, who had EL MD3 (including Elite referees Gözübüyük and Turpin).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also don’t understand the logic here. Some referees get a 3rd UCL game, whereas Turpin and Gozubuyuk have just one atm. Did they have a poor performance in their first game? Not that I remember…

I’d predict that Gozubuyuk and Turpin will be appointed in Nations League + MD5 UCL — and the French referee potentially saved for sth like Liverpool-Real.

      Delete
    2. Just find the appointment strategy strange. As you said, why not use officials that had EL fixtures on MD 3?
      No Spanish appointments at all?
Some officials used 3 consecutive MD appointments whilst some haven't officiated since MD1/2?
Some officials used twice in a MD CL & EL?
Just all over the place for me. Think I'll give up making any kind of prediction!!

      Delete
  9. About Balakin, we can say that the committee chek him. And he he has good appointment now. As well its only his second game in CL. Let's see

    ReplyDelete
  10. Turpin didn't play again
Until MD4 he only played in MD1.

    2. Yes, I was talking about CL games.
      Only 1 in 4Mds.

      Delete
    3. That's indeed very particular and honestly I don't have explanations, EURO times have definitely passed. We know there is big focus on Letexier, but it was impossible to predict Turpin with this management by committee. There should be other reasons for which he got only one CL assignment so far.

    1. Should be a direct choice by referee / Romanian federation, I think, otherwise UEFA would have asked for a change in Peljto team as well. But, reflecting on the situation, it's also true that a fixed team can have different story and management than relatively new assistant referees who don't perform well in their first very big games...

  12. In the First half of Grinfeeld game very busy VAR with many silent checks. I think First One in minute 3' for possible handball penalty must Be rewatched. Looked like clear arm missed by referee. The israeli referee whistled a subsequent handball by attacker. Portuguese VAR very Quick....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Uuhff, I rewatched 3. minute handball. It’s not on purpose, but the attacker’s arm clearly moves out of the body and towards the ball. According to Uefa’s current handball guideline ..

    1. Similar situation we saw in 2. Bundesliga a couple of weeks ago. Goalkeeper seems to take goal kick by passing the ball to a defender some meters away from him, defender takes the ball in his hands to ‘officially’ take the goal kick (50.)

      Delete
    2. Penalty is 100% correct. Goalkeeper kicks the ball towards the defender who stops the ball with his hand. Why wouldn't this be a penalty?

      Delete
    3. Justified penalty from Stieler for criminal handball. Well recognized, stupidity of the AVL player

      Delete
    4. It is simply a misinterpretation of whether the ball is in play or not. Just retake it, no harm done. How can you even think about a penalty? How is it in the spirit of the game to give a penalty for such nonsense? Perhaps they should bring back the rule that the goal kick must leave the penalty area if people are really going to insist on these "penalties".

      Delete
  14. I've seen it happen through videos but never thought I would see it happen. Great spot by either the ref or the lino on the Brugge penalty. Goalkeeper clearly takes the goal kick and in a moment of madness defender uses hands to stop the ball and place it back to take the goal kick again. Clear handball. Believe it happened twice in a German game.

  15. No "kids' mistake" this time :p

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok but then now one must discuss between the approach of Nyberg (no penalty) and Stieler (penalty). Again, referees are always left at their discretion by UEFA, as it seems no guidelines are issued for similar incidents. You have a decision and then the contrary one.

    1. Nyberg whistled shortly before and “confused” the players. Today no discussion in my opinion.

      Delete
    2. Maybe the referees were told to give penalty if it happened again, after Tuchel’s reaction? The Aston Villa coach cannot blame the referee

      Delete
  17. Could Stiler have taken the pains of his Bavarian compatriots and taught Nyberg how to apply the rule? lol
Jokes aside, in fact, the Aston Villa player was stupid not to understand that the ball was already in play.

    1. why are we talking about the referee here? For me it's a big stupidity from the AVL player who picks up the clearly played ball without needing to.

  18. Kovacs with two YC for players pushing each other before corner comes in. Must be new directive second time ive seen this, this season

And correct VAR supporting 1-1 in Paris no clear evidence of handball

  20. Spot on IFK for double touch by Eskas' AR2 :)

(Raphinha takes the corner, hits the post and comes back directly)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oliver applying PL no-tolerance to waving an imaginary card yesterday, 45+1' Kovacs has no issue with it. Then the handball penalty. Uefa, every day of the week; England, would not be given

    ReplyDelete
  22. Obrenovič faced several penalty area incidents in the first half.

15' STU GK's challenge but most likely missed offside by AR2 in APP
31' tackle by STU defender - really borderline if not a foul
33' ATA defender being late but an incident deemed as collision by the referee - similar incident to no penalty for careless kick in PSV - Girona yesterday (the ball going out from the penalty area).

I will post videos asap after the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kovacs only gave Arteta a yellow card for picking up the ball while it was still in play. Isn't that a red card offence? Because I've always thought it was

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To my knowledge it is a red. Strange decision, as it's clearly stated in the LOTG and therefore not really i judgement call. Just pure law knowledge. Or am I wrong?

      Delete
  24. RC for SFP to Feyenoord by Rumsas. I'm not surprised that this one has been called by an Italian VAR, given the current focus on serious foul plays in serie A. I think the red card must be praised, but somebody could have different idea, saying that YC would be enough. I think this is more than a step on foot, but point of contact not that high. At the border, some VARs call it, others can support referees issuing YC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Indeed, I don't like that RC too much, especially as the ball was played before.

Good intervention for a penalty shortly afterwards.

      Delete
    2. Second OFR after a few minutes for the Lithuanian referee, called for a penalty to be given. Regardless of the nature of the incidents, you can see that Italian VARs are by far more active than others from different countries, and that's due to how they are instructed in serie A.

      Delete
    3. I think it's really borderline, in the most recent RAP there are also some situations where those kind of situations are a RC and others only a YC

      Delete
    4. For me the first intervention is even completely wrong. Ball is played, low contact, heel stays on the ground m. That should at least put the situation in the area where it’s up to the referee to decide.
Second intervention is correct obviously (though Rumsas seemed to have more doubts following that one)

      Delete
    5. For me also a wrong intervention in Rotterdam Way to much reason to support the onfield call. This is not why we have the VAR. YC was supportable and for me also the right choice. Nadje played the ball, had a part of his feet on the ground. The VAR handled way to eager.

      Delete
    6. I think it's arguable whether RC could be given to Nadje.
Nadje puts his foot out to play the ball, and he does in fact play the ball straight away. That foot just keeps moving, and there's the opponent's foot in front of it. In his footwork, he played the ball quite early on and then the opponent's foot was at the end.
Can he see that the opponent's foot is there in the first place?

To be honest I was very surprised. If this is 100% RC, how are they doing calcio in Serie A?

      Delete
  25. The most important criticism I can make to committee is the lack of uniformity and guidelines to VAR in UEFA competitions. I know it's difficult because you have many referees from all different countries, with their mind and their ideas. Nevertheless, how much is clear that they act like domestic league in many cases? English VARs not calling referee for a penalty, Italian VAR paying big attention to serious foul plays and of course all kind of penalties, very quick checks about handballs, where other VARs would havve invited referees to monitor. At a certain point the original nature and the sens of VAR is lost, because, depending on who is in charge, you have different outcomes. To me, Rosetti doesn't say anything to Italian VARs because he trusts the work they do in serie A, but that's a problem if compared to others. Why an English VAR wihout an international background was assigned to a CL game yesterday and he called Taylor for nothing (not a clear and obvious mistake with all people agreeing here)? This must be solve, otherwise it's useless to have VAR, of course important for factual decisions, but the rest? Quite a mess, if you ask me. Maybe I'm harsh, but I think it's impossible to keep this way of handling games with technology, something must be done in terms of consistency.
OK for the other competitions, but at least inside the same tournament, we should have VAR with a full agreement on peculiar incidents. Correct me if I'm wrong...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I absolutely agree with you Chefren. The way it’s being handled now simply cannot continue, because it’s not being done consistently. Of course, it’s challenging, as you rightly pointed out, since it’s handled differently in many countries, but just because Rosetti is Italian doesn’t mean that his fellow Italians always get everything right IMO.
The best example is today’s intervention by Mariani in Rotterdam. That is by no means a clear and obvious error.

      Delete
    2. VAR is wildly inconsistent dependent on country (although I must say, English VARs do act differently in Europe, just not sometimes in a better way). But I don't think that's the only issue. The newer guidelines to try and improve behaviour and the image of the game are also being applied by the referees in very, very different ways. Some only allow the captains to speak, some caution every gesture of dissent, some allow a lot, some are very strict on pushing, others not, and these new guidelines seem to be being applied very differently by each official. I think the three yellows and a ban rule needs to go, as the strictness of officials is so variable. I also think clearer points need to be made to all, and that there are far, far more workshops that are mandatory to attend in order to be a Uefa VAR, because there needs to be more clarity and consistency than we've seen this week

      Delete
    3. To add to the English point, VARs within the Premier League do seem to have improved. There is a fairly high bar for intervention, that is generally well applied. I think the confusion from a different interpretation on fouls, SFP, reckless, handball, etc, and on the bar for intervention, is leading to the mistakes and panic when appointed outwith England. I think we can see with Attwell that he is generally now trusted with the odd error, but wasn't for a long time, and it just takes time for English officials to adjust to the (sometimes major) differences

      Delete
    4. English officials at least try to adapt to the UEFA standard, imo that should apply to all countries (incl. officials from Italy)

The best UEFA standard is somewhere in between the English and Italian.

  28. The potential hanbdall penalty in Shakhtar - Young Boys.
With the call by referee of the second handball, against attacker can we be sure that he saw what had happened before? It's possible that VAR assessed a deliberate play by head so he didn't intervene for that, but the movement of the arm, hitting ball is very evident situation in which a whistle is always 100% mandatory, even deliberate in the old meaning.
Not too long check for the Portuguese VAR, as I said yesterday, while an Italian VAR would have lost his mind here, I think...

  29. Please find below some incidents from Kovacs game in Milan.

8' Possible YC for reckless... head (very dangerous challenge)
    https://streambug.org/cv/62fcf5

28' PAI, punching by keeper. Without playing the ball, one can't find arguments why keeper was not punished and VAR supported the play on. To me, crucial mistake by VAR as well. One can't argue about the intensity of the punch.
    https://streambug.org/cv/cce8b1

45'+1 Possible YC for SPA (free kick leading to the following penalty incident), missed YC for asking YC to opponent.
    https://streambug.org/cv/0fbe87
About the possible YC for SPA, one must say that it was a clear counterattack by Inter, but at the moment of the foul the action had lost a bit of dangerousness, with some Arsenal player coming back, but still, YC to me expected decision and English player was very lucky to escape from a card in this context. Then, if Kovacs saw the gesture by Lautaro asking for YC, he can't be forgiven there. Another missed YC.

    45'+1 Penalty whistled for handball
    https://streambug.org/cv/b2da5c
Correct decision, very good positioning, frontal view to spot it.

63' Arsenal coach interfering with game, touching ball while still in play, YC.
    https://streambug.org/cv/3e4ec1
According to LotG, this should be RC, but it's possible committee discussed this option with their referees (just my assumption) and in case of rather in the cases without malice (his team was losing) they asked for YC instead RC. Different in case of such action for wasting time.

To me, the negative aspects of this performance seem to be more than the positive notes. A penalty should have been whistled, the YC for SPA was rather expected decision, but in this case we know that YC and SPA are always very grey areas. Missed card for Lautaro as well.

    1. 28' - Big miss by the referee and VAR. Reckless offence by GK shouldn't be forgiven in this case. Penalty and YC to be given.

45+1' - No YC for SPA is OK but no YC (or at least a very strict warning - would've been optimal in order to not make Inter overly upset) for demanding a YC to an opponent is not.

63' - Well, the LotG don't give the option to issue a YC. The same as they don't give the option to not issue a YC for removing a shirt at goal celebration and all referees adapt this law. So, someone violated the LotG here - either referees or UEFA with their instructions...

    1. The situation in 31' was perceived as vry clear penalty, again, an Italian VAR would have intervened, because there wasn't a play on the ball, but only opponent suffered the effects of the tackle. You can maybe say that there is a small chance to support, but I think penalty to be whistled. Nevertheless, Obrenovic made his assessment making clear gestures and this didn't help VAR in terms of a possible intervention. But it would be interesting to know what the Slovenian exactly saw here.
For the situation in 33', no call can be accepted.

    2. Oh, please, Chefren, how can that be a penalty? There is a slight touch before the defender plays the ball. It's commendable that he didn't call it because it's a very difficult situation for the referee, as at first glance it looks like a penalty.

  31. Mykola Balakin in Sparta Praha - Brest

13' Possible YC for tackle by attacker on keeper

In my opinion, evident card missed by referee. Quite dangerous challenge, resulting in a clear reckless action. Foul called by AR2 as well, but no card to me is a mistake.

14' Possible YC for reckless use of arm.

Unfortunately only one replay and not the best one, from behind. Better clues from the live sequence, I think this arm hit opponent and we can't have doubts (not a simulation), then the intensity is a problem to assess. One should support Balakin without a further evidence, but rather YC wouldn't have been wrong, I think. The referee in this case gave a warning to the player.

18' Possible YC for reckless challenge

Very clumsy action on the opponent. Still, no card by referee.

5' - 19' Two offside calls by AR1 in first half. If one can accept the timing in the first situation, rather not a promising attack anymore, the second flag was very "dangerous" and Balakin must be praised because he waited the end of action before whistling. It was very evident offside but timing was against the VAR guidelines. Don't know whether AR forgot it or he was sure about the call. We don't see ARs ignoring the guidelines, and Balakin waiting before calling it was a signal that maybe this should have been avoided. Still we don't know what exactly Rosetti asked their assistant referees, so he can't be blamed too much as offside was evident. In all cases, scoring a goal, even if Balakin had allowed play on, would have resulted in controversial and polemic because some players had stopped themselves...

    23' YC for simulation
    https://streambug.org/cv/7fe48e
In my opinion this was an excellent management by Ukrainian referee. Of course never penalty, but why not play on, deeming it as "normal fall" after a contact with opponent and not simulation? We have the answer by reading referee's reaction. At first "nothing" gesture, when player fell down, then after having looked at him, due to the protests (player expecting a penalty, see the replay), Baalkin changed his mind in this process that we can call a gradual approach and he rightly booked the player. In other words, without the protests, a normal play on would have followed. For me perfect by Balakin, but this can come more from refereew who are used to punish simulations strictly and more frequently than others, because in most of cases, even with this request by player looking at referee, the play on is confirmed.

51' Careless use of arm by a player who was already booked

OK not to issue second YC, not a reckless action, but missed foul.

62' Another incident that referee didn't see accurately, but it wasn't easy. Possible YC for reckless challenge and surely a missed foul.
    https://streambug.org/cv/7698a6
I think in this case one must underline before all, how the player entered in the challenge with that tackle, then the opponent had absolutely no chance in my opinion to avoid him, and there was this stepping on the leg (see replay). Nevertheless, to me this can be a very special case in which even a YC can be forgiven, because absolutely player can do nothing to avoid that contact. Still, I think to be booked according to LotG, but overall one can't describe this as big miss by the Ukranian and correct by VAR to stay silent, absolutely never ever a red card.

Absolutely correct and mandatory. This was too much for Balakin style as well, impossible to miss the card.

90' PAI - Silent check by VAR, Play On confirmed
      https://streambug.org/cv/ca81ca
I think one can agree with Balakin and the VAR, the tackle of defender, yes, a very risky action, resulted in a wall, saving the ball from the net, and so to me OK to play on, even if after having kicked maybe attacker felt the contact with opponent. I wouldn't have punished this great save with a penalty call.

Negative point: management of added time. All substitutions by both teams in second half, the (relatively short but still...) VAR check in 90', and a certain attitude by Brest to waste time before corner kicks and so on, but I must say this was never very blatant. Nevertheless, to me 4 minutes or more should have been the minimum, and there was also the goal by Sparta in the middle, Balakin extended only for further 30 seconds. This is a very important point for improvement.

So, drawing conclusion, not a very challenging game for the Ukrainian, but in second half, and especially in the last minutes, referee had his work to do. Very lenient style as you can see from the clips, booking only when strictly needed, all can have their opinions about the possible cards to be issued in first half, but I must say that after having watched the game, the Ukranian has a certain strenght coming from his presence on the field. He rather wants to solve most of the situations without engaging himself too much in a disciplinary management. But.. he is a very strict referee if he notices that somebody wants to fool him. Very evident how he reacted in 23', and one can like it, because this means also personality, in my opinion, not allowing that a player will overtake you on the field. For some aspects, he doesn't seem the modern model of referee that UEFA wants, but these aspectes could be even praised.
Very good in alterness when he didn't stop game for offside, a better cooperation with AR1 was possible. If I remember correctly, the AR involved was indeed the one at EURO with him, so he should be aware about the offside timing with VAR. Two or three missed foul but nothing extra-ordinary, a performance that one can still describe as positive, I think.
