  1. Firstly thank you for creating this blog- I can only echo everyone's sentiments.

    The first OT post ;-)

I watched the two matches of Under17 World Cup today.

Shukralla showed why he is one of AFC's best referees and why he will surely attend WC2018, really strong soft skills, control ensured throughout, in principle he could control the match without sanctions. However he struggled a bit to find a clear line in cards, and missed a RC:SFP in additional time of the first half, in my opinion. But overall he left a fairly sovereign impression, no one will talk about the referee but also the scoreline ensured this.

Hategan tolerated no obvious attempts at SPA, even if they didn't fully meet the criteria for an attack, the fact they were shirt pulls justified the cards to my mind. All I would say considering the 5-0 score, three YCs didn't really reflect the tactical approach of both teams; maybe there was one or the other moment he could caution a Paraguay player, which would have been tactically wise, but Hategan decided not. Clearly he has a talent, but he needs to work on his management on the pitch- for a style that isn't a match manager he needs to be more firm, and in general making a lot less hectic impression would greatly help this to my mind.

  2. Two interesting situations from the Leicester City FC - West Bromwich Albion FC game refereed by Mike Dean.

    1. Impeding the progress of an opponent involving contact - outside or inside the penalty area?

    2. #25 white-red's foul or collision?

    1. 1) in my opinion penalty, it seems as contact occurred on the line

      2) Player in white & red is kicks the ball, then there is this late attempt by opponent, it is reasonable to play on, I wouldn't whistle a foul because it was something determined only by blue player, who even got injured for his action

      Delete
    2. 1) In my opinion, attacker wanted to win a penalty by changing his running path in order to cause a contact inside the penalty area. In addition, you can draw the attacker-ball line in the moment attacker is impeded by goalkeeper but before he changes his running path. That line would be outside the penalty area. So, the contact occured (mostly) inside the penalty area, but the place where it occured was determined by change of running path (in order to win a penalty). Therefore, a free kick is a commonsensical decision in my eyes. What do you think?

      2) I fully agree.

UEFA PLAY OFF FOR WC 2018

    CROATIA - GREECE
    DENMARK - REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
    SWEDEN - ITALY
    NORTHEN IRELAND - SWITZERLAND

I will write soon my predictions.

    1. My predictions (former user K. S. here):

Croatia - Greece: Brych (GER) / Kuipers (NED)
Denmark - Republic of Ireland: Mateu Lahoz (ESP) / Marciniak (POL)
Sweden - Italy: Mazic (SRB) / Cakir (TUR)
Northern Ireland - Switzerland: Kassai (HUN) / Eriksson (SWE)

I furthermore expect Skomina, Rocchi and maybe even Karasev in the intercontinental play-offs. Thoughts?

      Delete
    2. Out of all these matches,Croatia and Greece to me is high risk match, especially when it will be played in Greece for 2nd leg.To me Brych is best suited for one of this match, altough he had Croatia vs Ukraine, maybe Kuipers also...

      Delete
    3. Predictions:
Croatia - Greece: Szymon Marciniak (GRE) / Björn Kuipers (NED)
Denmark - Republic of Ireland: Felix Brych (GER) / Gianluca Rocchi (ITA)
Sweden - Italy: Milorad Mažić (SRB) / Antonio Mateu Lahoz (ESP)
Northern Ireland - Switzerland: Damir Skomina (SVN) / Jonas Eriksson (SWE)

    4. CROATIA - GREECE: Kuipers/Marciniak
DENMARK - REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Cakir/Skomina
      SWEDEN - ITALY: Mazic/ Brych
NORTHEN IRELAND - SWITZERLAND: Karasev/ Lahoz
No Italian referee IMO because Italy is still in the play-off. Also no situation, example Kuipers on Italy-Sweden because Sweden and Netherlands were on the same group. You know what I mean;-)

    5. Friends, which playoff tie do you think can get the most heated and end up being the most challenging for the referees?? Croatia v Greece most probably??

      Delete
    6. To my mind Croatia - Greece also, but I think one cannot forget France - Ireland... all playoffs are very important, and can make (Maillet, De Bleeckere, Brych) or destroy (Hansson, AR Zunic) a career.

      Delete
    7. Right Mikael, absolutely right. We all remember what happened at first 8 years ago with Hansson, and then 4 years ago with Skomina (and Zunic). So these are on paper the most dangerous games for a referee, during a WC preselection. A crucial mistake deciding the tie in favor of a team can't be hidden and FIFA committee is always forced to treat the involved officials according to what they did. Before the game involving France and Ireland, Hansson was in my opinion sure to officiate at WC, and then... so the maximum attention must be paid there.
However, I hope everything will go well this time...
If I had to make a choice for the most heated game, I would say Croatia - Greece and Italy - Sweden, respectively, at least on paper, could be a bit more demanding than the other two, but of course one can't say anything before the kick off. Everything is just based on feelings. Good luck to all officials who will get these games.

  9. Given the likely use of UEFA referees by FIFA for the playoffs, I think these are very difficult predictions to make. I'll say:

Croatia - Greece: Atkinson (ENG) / Kuipers (NED)
Denmark - Republic of Ireland: Marciniak (POL) / Mateu Lahoz (ESP)
Sweden - Italy: Kassai (HUN) / Cakir (TUR)
Northern Ireland : Switzerland: Skomina (SVN) / Karasev (RUS)

That would leave Rocchi, Brych and Mazic all eligible for the FIFA playoffs, if needed. Also leaves Turpin and Eriksson out in the cold, so who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Croatia - Greece : Atkinson/ Kuipers
    Denmark-Ireland: Ricchi/ Brych
    Sweden- Italy: Mazic/ Cakir
    N. Ireland- Switzerland: Eriksson/Skomina

    1. Play off 2013 15.11.'13 / 19.11.'13

      Greece- Romania: Pedro Proeça/Milorad Mazic;
      Island- Croatia: Alberto Undiano Mallenco/ Björn Kuipers;
Ukraine -France: Cüneyt Çakir/ Damir Skomina.

    2. 2010

ROI - FRA, Brych / Hansson
      POR - B&H, Atkinson / Rosetti
GRE - UKR, Duhamel / Benquerenca
RUS - SVN, Larsen / Hauge

To be honest I think FIFA learnt a lot from these playoffs.
I think they had a clear plan of one sure name (Rosetti) in a very intensive atmosphere, to test some unsure names (Benquerenca, Hansson, Larsen?) in perceived not too hard matches, but moreover to appoint referees who clearly had no chances for the WC, a couple of young talents but mostly solid referees who for one reason or another would have no ticket to South Africa even in case of excellent performances. To my mind the format of 2014 designations is a lot better.

      Delete
    3. Predictions:

Croatia - Greece: Brych / Cakir
Denmark - Republic of Ireland: Atkinson / Rocchi
Sweden - Italy: Kuipers / Skomina
Northern Ireland - Switzerland: Kassai / Mateu Lahoz

For some reason, I would expect Marciniak to be protected from the play-off risk. He is having good performances but he is the biggest promise for the future and "must" go to this WC to make experience. Same for Mateu Lahoz with what seems an "easier" game. I also expect Eriksson not to be at WC unfortunately, based on recent performances, whereas Kassai stands some chances in my opinion.

One last question: are the appointments for both legs made simultaneously or will it be possible to see how 1st leg goes before appointing for 2nd?

      Delete
    4. I think that appointments will be made at the same time for both legs, because there is a too short time between the two dates.

      Delete
    5. @Osborne Eriksson ahead of Kassai currently if recent appointments are anything to go by

      Delete
    6. My predictions
      CRO-GRE: Karasev / Atkinson
      DEN-IRL: Hategan / Mateu
      SWE-ITA: Marciniak / Skomina
      NIR-SUI: Rocchi / Brych

      HON-AUS: Pitana / Cakir
      NZL-PER: Kuipers / Geiger

      Delete
    7. It's very difficult for me to make a prediction so I have in my mind two scenarios:
First one will involve best Uefa referees: Kuipers, Brych, Skomina, Mazic, Marciniak, Rocchi, Kassai, Cakir and probably mateu lahoz and Eriksson for intercontinental FIFA play off. It shuold be consistent with the importance of the matches but could be very risky for the officials because if something of wrong happen will be out of WC, as Chefren mentioned for Hansson.
Second scenario is to appoint referees which seem to be not so safe for WC, at least as main referees: Atkinson, Collum, Hategan, Karasev, Undiano Mallenco, Turpin, Orsato and Eriksson. They are anyway reliable and if something of wrong will happen nobody will loose their ticket to Russia because these ones seems already out.
      What do you think ?
Last question: why most of you are sure about Brych's attendance at next Fifa CWC ? He has just officiated CL final match facing Real Madrid. May be Mazic could be more fare.

    1. No, no at all. If you run behind player who controls the ball, you must be sure there won't be any contact, especially by legs. Here a slight touch with attacker's right leg caused attacker's right leg hitting his left leg.

  12. @Soham,without any doubt, the most heated is Greece and Croatia.

Balkan teams that dont like each other(Greece is friends with Serbia so Croats dont like them),possible riots beetwen fans, very physical and in some case dirty football from Greece.
Best example was recently when Greece played Bosnia and Herzegovina, players were very nervous and situation in crowd was not secure.
Rizzoli and Eriksson handled those matches and both were very busy, especially Eriksson who showed 12 yellows and 2 red cards.Rizzoli was less bussier but he also had tough match,he showed 7 yellows and there was big brawl at the end of the match between players and some coaching staff.
Greeks and Croats played in 2012 qualy. and I can remember how it was challenging for Howard Webb in Greece when those two teams played.

I can see that in all prediction we all agree that Kuipers should get their 2nd leg, that will be very fiery match that is for sure.

    2. I tried to look for some different names outside UEFA, but still difficult. AFC referees are not possible there, about CONMEBOL most of them are Spanish mother tongue, so, due to Honduras, Australia could make complaints against this choice (Pitana, for example). In addition, as I already wrote a few days ago, Honduras and all CONMEBOL federations are still from America if we talk about continent, so the better choice here would be a referee from UEFA.

  14. We also have Peru- New Zeeland. If the FIFA Choose for UEFA referees, we have 14!! UEFA referees, but referees like Irmatov And Geiger are here also possible.

    3. Indeed so... Can you share more on it??

    4. I can't say much but he is in danger even for demotion.......

      Delete
    5. A demotion after last KO stage wouldn't have been a scandal, I would say. However, we can't talk about such important decision only due to one game, even though really poor managed. The problem with Kassai is that also in the past he had some periods of "black out".
That's my humble opinion: I think he should work hard on motivations, because in the past years he showed to be a top class referee, without any doubt.
Another real problem was that he got everything (WC Semifinal, CL final) definitely too early... how many years have passed? That's surely to be taken into account, as well. However, I wish the best for his future. It will be interesting to know how FIFA will treat him, differently (or not) from UEFA?

    6. Kassai has a huge issue domestically and not with UEFA.

  22. 55’ : nightmare night for Mazic assistant... offside missed prior to 1-2 from Besiktas. Offside missed after first kick on goal...

If you stop the video at the moment the player shot, you see Babel #8 staying offside.

    2. Well some top contenders for WC aren't covering themselves in glory it seems... Mazic had potential crucial mistake in Roma - Atlético Madrid and now Team Mazic struggling in Monaco as well... Not a very convenient time to lose form as a team I'm afraid :(

      Delete
    3. He not even losing form. He was very good in Roma - Atletico. Also didnt saw first dissallowed goal but this one is hard to spot since you have 2 players infront.

      Delete
    4. I remember Chefren reporting one missed handball penalty and another potential missed penalty in Roma - Atlético Madrid... I didn't see the match but highly esteemed comments from other members clearly suggests it's a crucial mistake by Mazic as the match ended 0-0...

      Delete
    5. First one was for handball and i think he made mistake there but his position in that situation was bad, second appeal for good decision..

      Delete
    6. Yes, watching the video, at the moment of the shot the player looks in offside. Not 100% sure, I guess there are other replays, but very likely offside.

    7. Mazic had 2 crucial mistakes at Roma - Atletico.

  23. 64': Mateu Lahoz correctly rejected a penalty appeal by Napoli.
It looked like a handball by a defender without keeper behind (so in case, RC) but the ball touched only the body.

  24. Well Marciniak has been a bit off colour today... Lots of errors here and there in relation to corner, goal kick decisions... A couple of wrong offside decisions from ARs as well but not game changing... We have seen better performances from the Polish crew overall

    1. Unfortunately, I agree. One of the weakest if not the weakest Marciniak's CL game. It was surely no good day of Polish officials: one crucial mistake and several other weaknesses, also from assistant referees.

      Delete
    2. Agree!
Tottenham goal was off side - very tight
Madrid penalty - was there any contact? First slow replay angle shows no contact - second angle from behind goal is more doubtful.
Ronaldo got YC for Unsporting behaviour in the first half. Off ball incident. RC for VC an option?

    4. Two major incidents already discussed here in Marciniak's game:

      Penalty given to real
      https://streamable.com/vllks

    5. In my opinion both incidents are really difficult to assess. Starting from the penalty appeal: I watched and rewatched the video, but I can't understand whether Real Madrid player touched at first the ball (even though slightly) and then the opponent. In case, this would maybe be a reason to back referee. However, AAR2, immediately after the incident had a strange posture and gesture, like waiting for a call by Marciniak. In case, I wouldn't then understand why this didn't happen.
Penalty to Real: I'm not 100% fully convinced. Was the contact really significant? Was the player already about to fall down before it? The answer to second question is very likely positive. However, referee can be backed in this case.

  25. Second penalty whistled by Mateu Lahoz and again absolutely clear.
This time he waited a few instants before deciding: possible AAR1 intervention, at least for a confirmation. However, given the position where the foul occurred, it was something to be detected exclusively by Mateu. So far, I must say an excellent performance, really good.

  26. "75 RC given by Unidano Mallenco, 2nd YC given to a shaktar player for SPA/Holding. Right decision of the spanish.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 75': disallowed goal scored by Manchester City, AR2.
Correct decision. The Spanish crew is at moment in a very top form, I must say. Mateu and his assistant referees deserve at moment a ticket for Russia.

  28. Kulbakov with a very challenging and tense game, I can deduce it from the fact that he issued several cards in a few minutes.
However, I didn't expect such outcome and maybe the same thought was shared by committee. This game so far is definitely crucial for qualification, with both teams still with only 1 point.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Chefren, I think we saw today 2 good spanish teams, Undiano Mallenco and Lahoz. Good management and a lot of correct decisions in critical situations. We see often in Spain a lot of mistakes but today a great performance.

    1. Agreed with Soham, on the whole it was no disasterous night for the Polish team but also no satisfactory one either.

20' Surely Musial actually has a zero angle at all to see the situation, everything is happening on the other side to him. I would guess he shouts sth to Marciniak like- "this is your call", although it is right next to AAR2 I don't think he can perceive the contact.
Marciniak's position as Ray said made him look only at the tackle from a poor angle, he must only see the ball move and the actual contact is impossible to decide from that angle. With AAR is it illogical to stand in this position for a cross to my mind.
I am not even sure it will be a crucial mistake, but the Polish team couldn't decide thanks to luck (Musial) and not feeling what was to happen next (Marciniak) in positioning.

42' Even if RMA was trying to fall because he was about to be tackled, the contact by TOT was definitely enough for a Penalty in my opinion. Delayed YC to TOT#3 also, Marciniak surely lost the player and (A)AR1 told him.

    2. @Mikael Why the situation at 20' is not a crucial mistake? Thought it was an absolute stonewaller missed and would've impacted the game in a different way surely!!

      Delete
    3. 20' no penalty for me. Casemiro hitted the ball first then almost slipped and hitted players feet, for me play-on.

      Delete
    4. 20' clear penalty imo.

About 42': At least an acceptable if not even correct penalty whistle. But what about his positioning? First, he has to avoid a ball contact, then he's quite far away, whistling a penalty from ~10m outside of the box. He has to bank on his assistants - this is always a queasy feeling for a referee.

      Delete
    5. I want to add, it's not the first time Marciniak has problems with movement/positioning - and the situation in 20' isn't a promo for his positioning as well...

      Delete
    6. The YC at penalty in 42' is wrong, imo. The tackle is not reckless, there is no DOGSO. SPA in penalty area should not be booked anymore.

      Delete
    7. It was a very late YC as well... Marciniak dished the YC out some time after whistling the penalty

    2. 7' - onside
16' - grey area, but SPA is preferable nowadays (doubts + foul is an attempt to play the ball)
26' - careless, SPA-like, strong verbal warning is enough
      36' - SPA-like, no eye-contact
      54' - offside

      Delete
    3. 7': onside
16': in my opinion this must be a RC. Without the foul, player would have had the chance to run alone and then shot on goal without any doubt there, in addition please see Pepe's reaction, he is more than happy to get "only" YC and he is worried about the possible complaints by opponent...
26': also in this case, I think YC should have been the best solution, and again please notice player's reaction, who thanks Mazic for the choice, I really don't like that attitude, but this is his style!
36': Very weird, showing the card and looking elsewhere, not the best procedure, but of course I wont question too much about that, YC is mandatory there.
      54': clear offside

Indeed it looks like offside, but a very particular and difficult situation to read.
The player who tries the shot before the author of the goal misses the ball, so the "offside" is still active as there was only a double attempt to make a save by keeper.

      Delete
    2. But was the second touch by the keeper a save or deliberate play - I would say no save, because he does not block a shot. Difficult situation indeed
