    1. With this appointments, technically all elegible spanish referees could be appointed in UCL MD1 next week, so difficult to make predictions!

    2. Will Guillermo Cuadra Fenandez replace Undiano mallenco ? Strange that federation has already announced new FIFA referees who will be in place in January

    3. Yes. CTA announces who will be the next FIFA at the end of the season, as then is when the ranks are published.

  5. Robert Madden in Finland - Italy

17' - Was a warning enough for this late challenge?
    https://streamable.com/dguv4

21' - First YC of the game for a reckless challenge
    https://streamable.com/kh2ct

53' - Penalty appeal by Italy
    https://streamable.com/xqsk2
    https://streamable.com/ag7m6 (replay)
I think supportable decision, not a clear foul, rather attacker going into defender's path, however a whistle wouldn't have been a mistake, but in case a very soft penalty.

57' - YC reckless challenge and SPA
    https://streamable.com/p16ap

70' - Penalty to Finland for a challenge from behind
    https://streamable.com/8rjxp
I think the contact existed, check from 00:19 in the video, enough for a whistle once a player is touched from behind while running in penalty area.

71' - YC to Italian GK for unsporting behavior against the penalty taker.
    https://streamable.com/djnxb
I think referee assessed that keeper took too long time drinking before returning in his position for the penalty.

74' - YC for reckless challenge
    https://streamable.com/j8g1h

76' - Missed YC and missed cooperation among the officials, AR1 - FO
    https://streamable.com/5k8n6
This was a very blatant reckless challenge resulting in a kick to opponent without any chance to play ball. Mandatory YC. With Madden very far from the scene, I think both AR1 and FO responsible for this mistake.

78' - Penalty for deliberate handball to Italy
    https://streamable.com/cldxy
Wrong decision. Whistled without hesitation, replay shows that arm is not in a punishable position, one can't be even sure about the exact point of contact with ball. Referee decided following his perception because from his position it was impossible to assess directly the incident. While I really like the attitude to have an instinct and to make quick decisions, in this case, without VAR, and in a so important game, referee should have waited a bit before whistling. Also, a consultation with AR1 would have been good thing. Of course one must also admit that live it looked like a very clear handball, but we can't stop our analysis here.

90'+1 - Possible YC for reckless challenge, directly on the opponent
    https://streamable.com/c6kza

90'+3 - YC for reckless challenge
    https://streamable.com/k78j6

Madden was quite lenient in disciplinary control, he issued YC only for very mandatory situations, but also missed a very clear one (76').
However, in an overall context one could have still assessed as quite good referee's performance. The big problem was this penalty and the way he whistled it: too "easily" for a so important decision.
There were quite important offside calls but replays were not shown. One must support ARs work.

    1. For me correct decision. Although arm is on the side there is a clear movement by the whole body towards the ball that must be punished

  10. Quite good first half from Kassai in Poland. One missed corner kick, unfortunately he booked Sabitzer afterwards for protesting, this YC could be avoided if he had spotted the corner. And maybe a missed YC for Lewandowski in 44'. Nothing special apart of that, good control of the game.

  11. What a disaster by victor kassie right now in Poland vs Austria...

    Poland deny a penalty...

    Austria given a fake freekick

    1. Despite I'm an Austrian, I think both decisions were correct.
I'm quite convinced by his performance tonight, looks like the old Kassai is back.

    2. Rather wrong FK and YC in 93'. This and the two incidents I mentioned from the first half were the only doubtful decisions.
      But overall a good performance.

  13. Mateu Lahoz with a very convincing performance again. Full control, and this time a very strict but calm approach.
Maybe a missed red card for a stamp on the shin by the Hungarian captain (who were already cautioned)
Apart from that great job in a challenging game.

Ar2 missed offside before the first Slovak goal though.

    1. We all know it's not about the quantity of the fouls what matters...Hungarians made some very rough challenges, therefore they got more cards.
The missed offside is not his fault. And everybody could have expected a very challenging game, where both teams fight for qualification.
I think he was rather calm in this body language and he kept full control. When the game could possible heat up (last 20 mins), where hometeam should have pushed for qualiser, players got tired and so on..he didn't have to give a single caution.
So yes that was an elite referee's very good performance in my opinion.

The missed RC is a mistake (I think it was hard to spot it actually), but the total picture was very good.

  14. Anthony Taylor had a really challenging game in Slovenia (vs. Izrael) .
Both teams very combative, very agressive and very nervous making gestures and complains to referee after almost every foul.
In my opinion he took too lenient style and allowing hard tackles was risky in this athmospheere on the pitch but he did manage to keep it under control in the end so probably positive grade for him.

  16. SLOVENIA - ISRAEL
    Referee: Anthony Taylor (England)

Overall I thought it was a very good performance by Anthony Taylor in this rather challenging match between Slovenia and Israel. A game which consisted of many many small fouls throughout the entire game, all well detected by the English referee.

=> Taylor read the match very well: already in the opening minutes of the match, he had to blow his whistle for some smaller fouls committed by players on each side. Therefore, the decision to open the cards at 6’ for a SPA challenge by ISR17 is fully understandable and fully correct. It did have an impact on the game, as the referee clearly managed to put a signal by issuing this first yellow card.

=> All the other cautions given were correct in this game: one more for a reckless foul in 45+1’, persistent infringement in 57’, dissent in 58’ and 90+1’ for unsporting behaviour (SVN21 took his shirt off after scoring). I especially have to praise the YC in 58’ for dissent: SVN7 makes a dissenting gesture after Taylor refused to award a potential free-kick for SPA. While play continues, Taylor interrupts the match and gives the YC to SVN7 for dissent. He is surrounded by Slovenian players but solves this very well, by remaining calm and firm at the same time. Well done!

=> One could debate about two missed YC: one for a reckless challenge in 7’ (at least a verbal warning would have been needed IMO, but YC would have been better, especially since it would have come very shortly after the first one: it would have made clear how the referee will proceed). Also a YC could have been awarded in 37’ for SPA.

=> Self-presentation: Taylor tried to stay in the background as much as he possibly could in order to benefit the game, in which he succeeded. He nevertheless was there when needed and managed the game in a calm but also firm manner (such as in the YC situation in 6' as well as in the confrontation in 57').

=> Both assistant referees executed their duties on expected level.

To sum it up, another very good performance by Anthony Taylor, who now definitely has arrived among the best referees in Europe. I would say that he has certainly overtaken his countryman Michael Oliver in terms of consideration by committee (which wasn’t the case when PLC was still at the head of committee). Keeping up with such performances should/must be rewarded with a participation at EURO 2020. I hope as well that Taylor gets now bigger matches in the Champions League, he deserves these after performing consistently well on a domestic as well as on the international level!
