Champions League and Europa League to resume in August

The UEFA Executive Committee has mapped out the rest of this season's UEFA cups, including match days and venues.

The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League will resume on Friday 7 August.

The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played as a straight knockout tournament in Lisbon, Portugal in August. All these ties will be single-leg fixtures.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be split between Benfica's Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting CP's Estádio José Alvalade. The Estádio do Dragão in Porto and the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimarães will host the four outstanding round of 16 second legs if required.

The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League has been on hold since Wednesday 11 March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The revised schedule to conclude this season's competition was confirmed following Wednesday's UEFA Executive Committee meeting.

  1. Very games in Lisbon for just 2 stadiums = Bad grass
in the north of portugal there are plenty of UEFA stadiums that could host these matches without putting pressure on the grass. For example: Estádio do Dragão, Estádio Municipal de Braga, Estádio D. Afonso Henriques and Estádio do Bessa within a radius of 30 km ...
Bad decision of UEFA and Portuguese Football Federation!

Good example in Germany, many stadiums!
Important matches deserve the best possible turf!

  2. Very controversial situation in Aston Villa - Sheffield United, Villa GK drops the ball behind the goal line, but the goal is not awarded and VAR does not intervene:

    2. I mean even if goal line technology somehow did not worked, how the assistant referee or VAR did not intervene...

    3. Trying to find an explanation: possibly referee and assistant referee trusted the GLT too much (understandably, given that the system has been efficient and always worked ever since it's establishment in PL). Possibly VAR trusted it as well and simply did not check the images. And that might as well suggest that because of the huge trust in that technology, VAR possibly never checks "Goal vs No Goal" situations. Which he absolutely should and must though!

Currently pissed off about the backlash Michael Oliver is currently receiving on social media, you can't possibly blame him. If the referees were told at half-time about this, damn, refereeing the second half with this incident in mind must be tough!

    4. Who is the VAR?

      This is unacceptable, sorry.

    5. VAR: Paul Tierney
      AVAR: Constantine Hatzidakis

    6. VAR should have intervened without thinking too much about what to do and maybe wondering whether he was entitled to do so or not. Goal was very clear, even without technology. This was a situation in which the intervention was needed. Another dark page of PL officiating. The level of officaiating in England is embarrassing.

    7. A goal NOT being conceded at the end of the day here is worse than Karásev and his team's decisive corner kick mistake in Salzburg-Marseille semi-final XD

  5. Horriffic collision in the Arsenal vs Manchester City game between the attacker and goalkeeper. Goalkeeper got the ball first but completely ran over the attacker. Only a drop ball.

    1. It was the goalkeeper and the defender, not the attacker. Drop ball was correct.

    [Mario Zebec, Igor Krmar]

    21:05 Lokomotiva - Hajduk
Damir Batinić, Vedran Đurak, Kruno Šarić, Ivan Matić
    [Ivan Bebek, Jerko Crnčić]

This is debut match for 30 year old assistant referee Dino Knez from Osijek.
Ivan Bebek (UEFA, 1st) and Mario Zebec (UEFA, 3rd) have double VAR appoitments in this matchday.
This is Duje Strukan's (UEFA, 2nd) 17th match in Prva HNL 2019/2020. He shares top of the list with Ivan Bebek (both 17). Duje Strukan is 35 and in my opinion he is 2nd best Croatian referee and I hope to see him in Europa League match soon. Also, I think that he is main candidate for this cup final Lokomotiva - Rijeka (to be played on August 1).

    1. My guess for cup final is Damir Batinic. He is 45, this is his last season, he is in a great form and cup final would be a great farewell.

      Delete
    2. Damir Batinic refereed last year final between Dinamo and Rijeka, so I don't think he will be appointed.

    3. It would not be a first time that someone is appointed two years in a row. Most recent Vucemilovic in 2015 and 2016 and Bebek in 2011 and 2012. There is no rule regarding number of appointments for cup final as well as number of consecutive finals in Croatia. But I agree that Strukan is one of the top candidates for the final.

  9. Very very good refereeing by José María Sánchez Martínez in Real Madrid - Valencia.
Valencia scored in 22', but goal was disallowed after VAR review.
Straight RC for VC for Valencia player in 89'
