  3. Is Carbone a referee or AR? Shouldn't the AVAR be a referee in Champions League or that does not matter?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In Italy the AVAR is an AR, so doesn’t matter

      Delete
    2. Assistant referee, in Italy VAR officials are always a referee and an assistant referee. UEFA appoints only VAR so AVAR is free choice of federation, however it isn't the first time that in a UEFA game with VAR there is an italian assistant referee as AVAR, it happened also several times on last season.

      Delete
    3. That's interesting! Never knew that UEFA only appoints the VAR, not the AVAR - thank you for the information!
Out of curiosity, is Italy the only European federation that appoints an AR as AVAR for UEFA competitions?

      Delete
    4. I have additional question. We had previously situation where VAR and AVAR are not from the same country (e.g. Treimanis and Schärer most recently in Europa League) or for example experienced VAR from different country then referee but AVAR from the same country as referee (City-Donetsk: Vincic was referee, Makkelie VAR and Praprotnik AVAR. I was convinced AVAR was also appointed by UEFA. Currently, in Croatian first league only ARs are appointed as AVARs.

      Delete
    5. In Spain AVARs are regular ARs in 99% of cases.

The other 1% is Isidro Díaz de Mera ho was appointed as AVAR for Granada-Alavés yesterday (VAR Cordero Vega). In MD1 Jorge Figueroa Vázquez was appointed as AVAR in Valencia-Levante (referee Sánchez Martínez, VAR Munuera Montero)

      Delete
    6. In Germany, the AVARs in Bundesliga are also ARs normally. In UEFA competitions, the German AVARs are mostly referees though, but in some cases Brych's AR1 Mark Borsch worked as AVAR - as he did in the WC.
England, Poland and Netherlands have also already used ARs as AVARs in CL.

      Delete
    7. So, UEFA leaves it up to the individual FAs to decide whether they send a ref or an AR as AVAR in UEFA competitions? Are there any UEFA guidelines?

    1. 49' Brave decision to stick with YC, the force is not high at all, so good decision IMO.
76' No PK for me, very unlucky for the attacker, interesting clip for sure :)
81' Lejeune is playing with the fire, but I think no second yellow is justifyable, but only just.

      Delete
    2. 76' It would be harsh to whistle that IMO. Although maybe TV commentators dont agree :D

      Delete
    3. I agree with Quilava that 82' should be a SYC (Granada player wins the position and Alavés player recklessly jumps at him in order to reach the ball). I suppose if you are looking for a YC+ in order to send someone off, then perhaps you can find arguments that it could still be assessed as careless.

The other two incidents depend on whether you assess INTENT (-> YC; no foul) or the RESULT (-> RC; Penalty + RC) as more important when evaluating scenes.

Del Cerro took the expected UEFA decisions in each case :)

  7. Interesting choice by new serie A and B committe headed by Rizzoli: Orsato will start his season by officiating the first game of 2020/21 serie B season, on next Friday. In serie B NO VAR and serie A referees were missing in this category since 2010 (they could officiate only in serie A).
We can also easily guess that on next week he is planned for a CL play off game on Tuesday or Wednesday and this appointment is a very good occasion to keep the form without being too much in the spotlights.

  9. Unluckily, another crucial mistake by Hategan's assistant referees.
This situation was difficult but it is not the first time VAR must intervene for offside matters in Hategan's games... too much frequent if compared to other Elite officials!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Too frequent? How many times did it happen to Hategan's ARs in the last 2 years, compared to others?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is not nice to make a list, however just to mention two recent situations, Bayern - Chelsea in CL KO stage and earlier Ajax - Chlesea in group stage. There is VAR and everything is solved, but I just want to report that because this can be a reason for which Hategan doesn't get more.

      Delete
    2. Nothing was solved in the Ajax - Chelsea game! The AR gave offside early on after which a penalty should have been whistled, but VAR (Marciniak) did not intervene. In the second half, AR correctly didn't rule out a goal but VAR did because they chose the wrong moment to pause the screen.

    3. Any videos for those two situations?

  11. No handball by Del Cerro Grande after QFR because the ball was between the lower arm and armpit level and therefore is not a criminal handball

    1. Supportable penalty and advantage for the attacking team.

    2. penalty was a shocking decision. clear foul and intervention was required. there was a clear penalty a bit earlier that Makkelie did not give. He is a top class ref but today he had a very disappointing game.

    3. Do you have a video?

  13. The sending off by Hategan was absolutely correct decision!

  14. Your opinion about penalty to Ferencvaros by Del Cerro Grande? My opinion is 50/50 handball, but short distance. VAR has checked.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, arm is close enough to the body and defender turns away, therefore no penalty. But hard to talk about a clear mistake in such situations.

    2. How about the penalty kick not given to Molde, in spite of the OFR?
Why were the two handballs judged differently?

  19. Danny Makkalie was very poor at Athens. He looks like no motivation no passion today

    2 crucial mistakes !!

Penalty kick decision must be cancel because of CLEAR holding before handball.Player fell down because of holding.VAR Intervention was needed

MISSED SECOND YELLOW CARD at min 88 very clear reckless challange even red card could be acceptable..How is possible a referee gives no card

Unfortunately Mr.Makkelie continues to make big mistakes in his matches. This is not a good signal for him !

  20. OT:

Irfan Peljto is appointed for the greatest Bosnian derby FK Sarajevo-FK Zeljeznicar. This is 6th time to be in charge for this match.

    1. Of course, no. 1 referee in each country should get the top domestic match.

    2. Good appointment - I watched this derby a couple of times and it is one of the hardest games in top flight European football to handle. I can recall an excellent performance by Peljto (https://streamable.com/oloac) in addition to a disastrous one by Haris Kaljanac which probably cost him a FIFA badge for 2020. I would like to see Admir Šehović referee this derby one day, which according to my records he never has.

      Delete
    3. Šehović got a derby in 2017.

I also liked Mulahasanović, an experienced referee. In the future 2 young refs Bilbija and Musa have a potential IMO

  22. In Molde, in my opinion the second handball (penalty whistled by del Cerro) is similar to the previous one (OFR but no call).
So I can't find explanations there! For sure handballs are a hot topic for the Spanish, he had some issues in EL last appearance Inter - Bayer Leverkusen as well. I can accept (support) the penalty call, but then he should have made the same before.

    1. The freedom is for all people on the blog, as you can read other comments were not deleted. We just don't want that this becomes only something personal against certain referees.
And you are right, Rosetti will decide for sure without any influence, no doubts.
Regarding situation: the holding before handball could have been whistled, but we know that holding and pushing are "difficult" topics for VAR, differently from lower contacts, so I guess VAR were not 100% sure. I also think that Makkelie would have whistled it if he had seen it live, before the handball. Then of course handball is factual thing. In this situation I think there are arguments for talking about the development of VAR (lowering the line of intervention in situations in which referee would change idea in front of monitor). About situation in 88' I don't know, I didn't watch game, so before that I should download it... expect another opinion soon.

  24. About Makkelie in Olympiacos-Omonia Nicosia:

68' Attacking foul by OLY97 was the 'expected' decision and what probably I'd have whistled as a referee as he slightly grabs OMO17 by his wrist. However, I'm not sure that NO-FOUL is a clear and obvious mistake.

    88' No card.

  26. I completely agree with Quilava’s words. On the penalty incident, the expected decision would be a free kick for away team, but nothing obvious/black-and-white. And in the 87. incident just a free kick is perfectly OK. Caution would be too harsh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Supportable PK, I have seen softer. Min 87 is too harsh for a second YC as outcome.

      Delete
    2. Disagree with Quilava. Obvious foul by attacker before penalty. Hand is a clear consequence about past holding. Sorry but IMO VAR MUST intervene here for at minimal an OFR. Wrong decision by Makkelie and VAR.

  27. Thanks for the videos in my opinion in 88' YC could have been issued but I don't see this as very clear mistake, the intensity of the contact is difficult to detect, also the fact that both players are trying to play ball with raised legs and it is not an unfair challenge from only one side. Borderline decisions between careless and reckless, it is up to referee.
