    1. Probably, we will see his name at tomorrow`s appointment

  3. Tomorrow we will see Skomina, Brych and maybe Orsato(?) I’m not so sure of the last name and there could be a few more candidates.

    1. Champions League play offs, Europa League play offs and Super Cup have been managed by committee as single set of appointments, there isn't any referee with more than one assignment. So it is logical to expect the three names you mentioned for the remaining games. Orsato is quite sure as he was appointed in serie B on last Friday (and Irrati, his VAR, yesterday), quite impossible to rule out Brych after he handled also a third qualifying round game, and then Skomina who had only one appearance in KO stage and must handle games to keep form.

I think the choices will be the following:

FC Midtjylland (DEN) - SK Slavia Praha (CZE)
      Felix Brych (GER)

      PAOK - Krasnodar
      Daniele Orsato (ITA)

FC Salzburg (AUT) - Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC (ISR)
      Damir Skomina (SVN)

  4. Agreed. I’m quite interested in Skomina and his performance. He was in the middle of a big discussion after his Barca-Bayern game and he can prove everybody wrong if he makes a good game.

    1. In my opinion should have been RC for violent conduct. The player did that deliberately or at least he could have avoided that, ball was on the other side, he was aware that with his move he would have harmed opponent. The classic reasoning by referees in this case when they issue YC is to think to an accidental contact - not deliberate, but I disagree. VAR was right in inviting referee to rewatch.

    2. Very clear red card, a huge mistake. I can't understand why YC

  6. Michael Oliver with THREE penalties in MC-LC interesting stuff--all at least supportable IMO (VAR supported all 3)

    1. Very good performance by Michael Oliver in my opinion. Another one for this new season. He's coming into a good run of form.

    2. I thought the first one where Walker grabbed Vardy was very soft, but noone complained! I think there was no contact on the feet, and the shoulder was not enough for me.

      Delete
  7. Unsporting behaviour or violent conduct of NAP-09? VAR Federico La Penna accepted YC shown by the referee Juan Luca Sacchi.

  8. 2 excellent decisions from marco di bello in roma-juventus. world class.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure whether you mean the handball penalty, but that’s just an expected decision in my opinion. A very clear handball, arm above shoulder level, and I even have a slight impression Di Bello didn’t see the offense himself (making himself smaller at the moment of the handball). But yes, correct decision obviously!

      Delete
    2. 3. Again good penalty call

      Delete
    3. I think Di Bello showed tonight that he has big potential - firm, able to sell decisions, arousing respect (Džeko who questioned some of Di Bello's calls, thanked him after the game without a single complaint). Although I thought his foul selection was not always optimal, he - and his team (first penalty was most likely awarded after an other team member's advice) - definitely can be satisfied with his performance. Well done!

      Delete
    4. Finally a very good performance from Di Bello after a very long time. It is too early to say that he fully recovered but for sure this is a very good signal. All clear and correct decisions, regarding first penalty I think he was helped by somebody, maybe AR2, as he hadn't whistled at first glance, then the second penalty is absolutely correect and the second YC as well (reckless with trailing leg). But what is very good indeed is that he looked to be sure about all the calls, he didn't show this body language in previous games, despite of some still acceptable calls. So I wish he can continue in this way, at UEFA level he lost credit and he was "replaced" by Mariani as new Category 2 in focus, as you know, but surely it would be good to have more opportunities. Just to add, the previous season for him was very difficult because - among other things - he lost his sister, a terrible event in his family. Now for sure he has a free mind and he can focus on refereeing as it was before.

    5. Oh, very sorry to read this. A tragic story indeed. It happened at the end of July, so not much time passed... Then I support Marco even more now!

  9. Anybody see the Tottenham-Newcastle penalty call? These hand ball laws are becoming disgracefull. Needs to be changed quickly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As referees we are responsible for enforcing the laws as they are written, not as we wish them to be. IFAB may change the handball interpretation again but I very much doubt that it will happen quickly.

    2. I dont see any problem, that handball is punishable, so fully correct decision by VAR and then also the main referee.

  14. Guys, what do you think about Fabbri as referee. Is he elite potential?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He has the pontential, but some performances last year made that Maresc, Di Bello and Mariani went over him in the graduation, and so on at level fifa (Seen Lazio-Juventus and Parma-Roma). Last week he was in charge in Serie B in Salernitana-Reggina. Pretty good performance reading some Italian sites.
But of course he could be a great referee

  15. As per every Tuesday, the Greek referee committe releases its view via Mark Clattenburg.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAd7KHR9QnQ

At 2:18 we see this week controversial decision. AR2 raises for an offside. VAR suggested an OFR for deliberate vs non-deliberate play of the defender. Referee decided it was deliberate but Mr Clattenburg disagreed with this decision and believes this situation should be deemed offside. I would like to hear your opinions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with Clattenburg, it's a 'desperate' deflection attempting to block a shot on target. Goal incorrectly allowed.

  17. Does anyone know what are the requirements for the fourth official in CL and EL? Does he have to be international referee or can also be without badge?

    1. Generally with FIFA Badge. But in EL mostly are non FIFA and in CL there were some exceptions like Petersen (GER)

  19. First penalty by Marciniak in Kyiv: wasn't that a deliberate play by defender before handball? He touched it by arm but after having played the ball with head. In my opinion for this reason it is not punishable, but maybe for UEFA not a clear and obvious mistake.
Now a second penalty possible offside before, the penalty a supportable call but still not a 100% very clear one if you ask me.

    1. Why no card at first penalty (handball)? I think we can even talk about DOGSO!

      Delete
    2. Wrong decision IMO.
The defender played the ball with his head to his own hand. The hand was in a normal position. Never punishable.

      Delete
    3. Video:
      https://streamja.com/MBPZv
You must consider the path of the ball after the last legal play, in this case the header by the same defender. So ball would have been very likely controlled by him or his teammate.
It wasn't a direct handball stopping the cross, this can explain no card (ball in the box without a clear recipient) but in my opinion could (should?) also have explained NO CALL. This criterion (deliberate play by the same player who then committs handball after that) is used in Italy for assessing the touch as not punishable.

      Delete
    4. I agree, Chefren. Never a deliberate handball according to current rules. VAR intervention required, no doubt about that...

    5. IMO that first penalty was wrong call by Marciniak. They did not give referees some new instructions for this season?

  20. Flawless night for Bjorn Kuipers! Still he is clearly in the top3 of European referee ing. Full control, earned huge respect from the beginning of the game. Basically with two early verbal warnings he put the game in his pocket. Good card selection and in the end easy game for him even though the tight result.
Well done to the whole team! Correctly disallowed goal in 92nd minute. Only Var check in the game, confirmed offside.

    2. However one can discuss whether or not the cautions in 49. (studs over shin) and 55. (scissor tackle) sufficed, and whether or not Mol10 should have received a 2nd caution (illegal use of arm) in 62.

      Delete
  21. How surprising, a mistake in Marciniak's game.
This is not about me disliking Marciniak or Polish referees, but why can't we be honest? Marciniak makes mistakes in most of his games and VAR doesn't intervene. If Hategan gets bashed for having assistant referees that are not on the required level, surely Marciniak should be bashed for having a VAR that is not on the required level (and in this case he is more responsible since he can see it as well, he also makes many mistakes as VAR himself)?
