  2. The agenda is out for the upcoming IFAB AGM. Looks like codifying the five subs option is the primary proposed change. We'll have to see if anything else major gets approved.

  3. Jiyed VAR in the semi-finals and referee in the match for third place... this is very unusual in the current context with specialized VMOs. Is he mainly considered as referee or VAR?

Andris Treimanis (UEFA 1st) will handle the Greek SL clash PAOK - Panathinaikos on Sunday (18:30 CET). His assistants are Haralds Gudermanis and Aleksejs Spasjonnikovs. VAR is Ivan Bebek (CRO)

    1. How is the officiating in SLGR this season? I have only watched a few matches this season and just trying to get a overview of the quality. Seems to be many foreign officials doing the bigger ties this season. Is that normal? Thanks

  6. How is that goal given in Man Untd game??? It is punishable and that should be the first criterion before saying if it’s accidental!!!!

    1. Mind blown. Unnatually away from the body and his arm has moved towards the body. Handball offense in two ways.

      Delete
    2. So would you say, it's a clear penalty, if the defender does it?

IMO, there are arguments for both sides
      Against penalty:
Arm position is somehow natural, part of the balancing
Ball comes from the own body
      For penalty:
Arm is far away from the body
Arm moves in the path of the ball

I would tend more towards punishable handball, mostly because of the last point. However not clear and obvious, so an OFR should have been done at most, if Taylor missed the handball completely.

      Delete
    3. There is no explanation that Taylor missed it because if he didn’t miss it he 100 percent blows a foul because the ball was kept in possession and made the attacking move better which is a foul leading up to a goal. So he definitely missed because he can’t say he saw that and didn’t give a foul.

      Delete
    4. It is reported that Taylor thought it was accidental as it bounced of his chest, with Attwell supporting this

      Delete
    5. The part with it being Taylor and Attwell is what is throwing me off. I'm 100% sure this is a foul but then a World Cup candidates in the center and as VMO say no foul and no intervention. Does the "self-play" consideration weigh more then I thought it did compared to the "arm moving towards ball" one?

      Delete
    6. In England, unless it's very very clearly arm moving towards ball, I think it does. Lack of time to move arm after deflection will generally be considered to the players advantage in England (or at least that's my impression)

      Delete
    7. In my understanding, the "self-play" is only a valid consideration if the player wants to kick or head ("play") the ball. (and not when trying to control it)

      Delete
    8. You already know that in Italy such goal would have never existed.
No way that VAR can ignore that...

    1. Many referees initially appointed tested positive during the Futsal Euro, so UEFA was stuck with a smaller group this year. They even had to call up a third Spanish referee and a third Portuguese referee in the middle of the tournament to cover all games with 5 match officials!

Melero again having troubles with his lenient approach.

Players not resoecting him, complaining and screaming at every decision he makes.

  13. A very hot Roma - Genoa for Rosario Abisso.
Crucial decision in the last minutes of the game:
    https://streamja.com/R13JE
Disallowed goal for step on foot. I think correct intervention by VAR. It must be very clear to make such a decisive call.
Then to add, a RC for DOGSO earlier in second half, in my opinion still supportable but not wrong. And then the drama for Roma, with Zaniolo, already booked for having celebrated by removing his shirt, sent off (maybe directly) for protests / insults to referee.
About Abisso, I must say that this is the maximum he can reach, a regular serie A referee until som years ago with some hopes for a future in FIFA, but he never managed the big step. Then, after the nightmare in Fiorentina - Inter in 2019 he never recovered.
I think that he is unable to read the game and very often he just takes decisions without some soft skills, required to officiate in serie A.

  14. Not convincing Guida tonight, no clear line in fouls, many protests allowed from players such as Barella, Hernandez, Dumfries and Brozovic.
Thank God other players behaved and kept their composure.

He can be praised for straight RC, great decision there, but other than that, average if you ask me.

    1. Absolutely agree that he had no clear line in fouls. I felt like it changed every ten minutes.
But i would say that his player Management was still okay. This Derby is always a hot game and we can not blame the ref for everything in my opinion

      Delete
    2. Extremely difficult game from the beginning with coaches and benches putting pressure on referee. In this context, the performance of Guida is satisfying but indeed he could have done better. I think we have a surely missed YC in second half, a possible one a few minutes before half time, but in this case I'm not 100% sure. Some discussions about the first goal by Milan, when they scored 1-1. Giraud took the ball but then a possible foul against opponent could have been whistled (correct by VAR to support). Correct RC in the end of the game as well. However, a better foul detection and some additional card would have helped him. The management of players was OK, he never lost control, and that's another very important thing.
I think that in this case it was difficult to end with a top performance, but surely I think he had some areas for improvement. Today the only discussions are only about the possible foul before 1-1, but fans seem to have accepted and understoodd that in this case it was impossible for VAR to intervene. Knowing AIA and Rocchi's committee way of assessments, I think they will be quite satisfied.

    3. Totally agree on your Analysis. In my opinion Play on before Milan goal is also definitely the better decision,

  15. Yes, Akarkad again... same as in the last minute of R16 match Burkina Faso - Gabon. Thankfully, Jiyed learned his lessons and this time held his whistle.

    1. I had the same impression as you, but the halftime replays show that he DID delay his flag, to be fair. So some merit for him in the incident, and at the end, the correct call was made.

      Delete
    2. Even though this time he was saved by VAR, Akarkad's two major errors in the KO stage of a continental competition are a warning signal for him and his trio.

      Delete
  16. Mostafa Akarkad had a Ragoonath moment in the third place playoff - thankfully, twenty years on, we can correct such decisions, and Burkina Faso were rightly awarded a second goal. Contrary to Ragoonath however, some praise for Akarkad from the incident - he delayed his flag, and in turn Jiyed his whistle, so the score could be awarded after intervention.

  17. Video:
    https://streamja.com/G2ZaG
Very good that AR2 waited, indeed, given that it wasn't an offside decision, he could have made a mistake, by reporting it before the end of action. I hope all assistant referees are always instructed to wait even in case of such decision to be taken (ball out) when there is a promising attack.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. After his huge error in R16, of course he waited this time, but... is he not supposed to keep his flag down if there is doubt? The benefit of doubt principle should be applied with or without VAR or not anymore?

      Delete
    2. The officials on the pitch must always take their decisions before VAR intervention, following the protocol. Otherwise, it is like they don't decide waiting for VAR. In this case, to answer to your question, very likely he was sure about the ball out, so he raised the flag. In case he had had doubts, he wouldn't have raised flag afterwards. But decisions must be always taken before VAR, that's very important for the role of referees on the pitch.

      Delete
    3. Agree that officials must make their decision on the pitch, but this situation was not clear at
at all, so he should have kept the flag down. Same for offside, if not clear, they should not raise their flag, giving the benefit of doubt to the attacking team.

      Delete
    4. In my opinion it is just a matter of perception on the pitch.
Very often we talk about "borderline situation", but this doesn't exist in what a referee or an assistant referee sees on the pitch. They just see something, and this can be either right or wrong. I hope you understand what I mean. So "in doubt no flag" is a difficult concept to apply if an assistant referee is sure that he sees an offside.

    2. Manzano always looks so so so uninterested and uninspired in all his match!!! Never proactive, doesn’t even signals what decisions he has given with his hands and walks round the pitch and occasionally jugs. He is an elite referee he should be more proactive!!

  21. From serie A game Udinese - Torino, a very particular situation:
    https://streamable.com/49goze
A player about to leave the pitch wanted to be booked deliberately, to miss the next game and be available for the derby to be played after that. Incredible action, he removed his shirt before leaving in order to be booked, but he also asked referee for that.
A so blatant and stupid behavior that one can't believe.
    Luckily referee didn't agree.

    1. Taking off your short isn’t a bookable offence unless it’s a goal celebration. The referee should book a player who makes a yellow card offence no matter if it’s deliberate or not. If it’s deliberate to miss a game or something then the ref must report it.

    2. I dont know about you, but IMO Rapuano can have a solid years in Serie A if he is showing zhis kond of performances.

He was leader on the pitxh, no insecurities, punished diving rightly and managed the game very well.

He is 36 years old so I dont know where was he so far, bu seeing him tonight I think he can be promising ref for next 10 years.

  25. Gomes is very active referee. Not passive.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't like how Gomes is trying to desperately not show any red cards...Egypt should have 3 more yellows (incl. 1 y/r) by now. His foul identification is fine, as is personality. But come on, if there is a clear hunt on Mané's feet, it's a referee's job to stop it.
