  1. Very good and indeed brave RC for SFP by Artan in Equatorial Guinea vs. Guinea - BUT, the karaté challenge was also a consequence of the rising tension which the young Somalian referee couldn't really arest over the course of a really challenging game. Equatorial Guinea are testing Artan to the limit and in some scenes, the ref is a bit unsure about how best to proceed on a managing the game level. Still - well done for perfectly reading the nature of this crazy challenge and issuing the expulsion, you'll see what I mean when the clip is posted.

    1. Artan has lost his line since the RC, and just missed a clear penalty (to Eq. Guinea) right in front of him - rightly, OFR called and now penalty given. Very high level of difficulty in this match, for sure the hardest (I've seen) so far.

Kenyan Gilbert Cheriyot also rightly disallowed a goal for a clear offside early in the 2H.

    3. Didn’t see the whole game, but I really like him. I thought he managed the Eq Guinea team as well as possible

    4. Very difficult game, indeed.
I can accept YC in the first scene, VAR would have supported RC as well. Second clip. fully correct RC, of course.
The penalty: easy to explain such a blatant (!) miss. Referee was focused on the penalty area close to goal with the ball coming and he didn't expect a so "early" incident, indeed you can see after the foul he continued for a very short time to look inside the box. When you give a mental priority to a kind of happening, then you can be mentally deceived like it happened. This one should have been seen and whistled without any hesitation.

Nevertheless, after his previous very positive games, the referee from Somalia deserved this chance and for some aspects good that he handled such a kind of match, this will be big experience for the future.

    5. Artan can be really proud of himself, he's very much a name for the future. His performance today didn't really live up to expectations and I guess this will be his last game at this tournament, but he's really surprised everyone with his very mature refereeing and can only look forward to a great career

    6. I already noticed him at the U20 AFCON. He got the opener and a semi-final there.

    7. Promising young referee. Things to learn from and polish up after that challenging game but a bright future ahead.

  2. Both goals in the 1H of Egypt vs. DR Congo noteworthy from the officiating perspective. First, the Egyptians argued that the throw-in leading directly to the games opening goal was wrongly awarded - replays aren't completely conclusive but it does seem as though that was the case; the problem in any case is that the officials visibly weren't sure and DRC 'took advantage' of that indecision with a quick execution and managed to score. Then, Egypt were rightly awarded a penalty for a striking foul inside the penalty area given after intervention (+YC given). In general, Abongile Tom is handling the game according to the same style as his previous two appointments at this AFCON: management-orientated with lots of verbal 'contact' with the players, but on the more critical side, it would not be wrong to say he still seems a little 'shy' in some interactions and perhaps a few too many dubious decisions in the goings-on of the match.

    1. Correct OFR and correct use of VAR:
      https://streamin.me/v/32d6f1a6
There can be only very few disagreements here, but in all cases we can't go below a careless foul, in the most different opinion, so everything very well managed.

About the throw-in (I didn't watch situation), I heard a former Italian serie A referee who once said "if you are in doubt about a throw-in decision, let the player act without indicating anything, the right team will take the ball". Well, maybe not always true, but still :)

    2. Not the best start to ET by Abongile Tom:

93’: amateurish non-YC to Egypt no.6 for a really blatant not-retreating, it caused a confrontation by Tom’s inaction.

96’: generally correct SYC to Egypt no.12 for reckless tackle not convincing and slightly panicky demeanour by the South African referee; it was given after some delay and gave the impression the DR Congo reaction may have ‘swayed’ the ultimate call.

      Delete
    3. 102’: good caution to DRC for SPA-reckless, also on a general management/balancing level after the cards accumulated by Egypt in the 2H.

    4. Generally decent performance by Tom overall but some incidents to consider as well - will upload clips when I can.

    6. 37' Asking for VAR about a throw-in decision? That's something we definitely can't accept by players!
About the incident, I think after the Egyptian, the last touch seems by Congo DR player with heel but not clear whether ball was inside or already outside there, without further replays.
Still very unlucky to see this resume of the game with Egyptian players distracted and opponents ready to score thank mostly to that, not fair, but also hard to blame officials! Situations that shouldn't happen at all, bad luck. :)

42': As said, correct OFR, at least careless, but I think reckless use of arms there.

45'+1 Looks definitely not enough for a foul!

58' and 60' I think we can notice maybe a lack of consistency, but still for me second incident not a very mandatory card. Surely the previous one appeared evident, but for balancing the disciplinary he could have done the same in both cases.

      62' Not a penalty!

93' As you dscribed, definitely nothing to add, referee allowed too much to the player without booking him, tried to solve with warnings but definitely it didn't work and created more incidents to follow.

96' First YC in 65' OK, about the second one, one must indeed criticize the management, at first clearly he didn't want to book, otherwise he would have done that immediately. After all that time, the yellow card loses definitely its weight, still a correct decision, but a poor show. Was it really difficult to see and show the card? Good positioning by referee.

113' Calling a foul is OK for me, after the previous touch on ball, still a dangerous tackle.

The referee appeared quite shaky in some circumstances, but he never lost the control of the game, according to what I can see. Still, better to whistle the penalty live and not with OFR, but as long as VAR is used correctly in this competition, we can be satisfied.
