OT: ~25' Man City v Newcastle, Man City defender clearly obstructs Newcastle attacker without any call before the first goal. It's just not a good year for Premiere League refereeing. The expectations and norms for enforcement of the LOTG in the league allow for too much contact in comparison to UEFA interpretations, which is why UEFA matches are refereed in a more stringent fashion (IMO) and why Premiere League referees haven't advance as far as their counterparts in recent Champions Leagues.
I must say that Abdulla Al-Marri's intervention late in IRNPLE to rescind a red card for DOGSO was a very good one. The time it would take for the attacker to make the turn towards goal neglect the fact that it was last man and Al-Marri showed good understanding by identifing it. It's hard to say that he's redeemed himself, but it still shows that he is a good VAR and deserve that second chance
Got many private requests about troubles with this RAP edition, I'm really sorry I can't help because it is difficult to know the specific issue you are experiencing, for sure there are more competent people than me, a suggest is to write to Jan from Dutch Referee Blog, among others. I think he can give more detailed help in this regard.
Now that Mourinho is gone from Roma,I think that refs in Itally and rest of Europe are now at ease and can sleep well. Maybe now they will officiate even better, cause he is,if you ask average football fan, the only one who is against referees and reason why refs are scared.
Refereeing community should never forgive Mourinho for his role in the events that led Anders Frisk to an early retirement in 2005 due to massive death threats.
Today's news is absolutely a turning point in 2023-24 season for Italian referees, finally Mourinho left Roma. I can't describe the condition in which Rocchi's committee was due to the Portuguese coach. He had talked also against Orsato some days ago. The choice for Rocchi was over, no further referees avaiable to be appointed. Now things will change, of course not with immediate effects, and I think in the next games we will still observe a certain behavior by Roma's players, but hopefully De Rossi will show to be a better person than his predecessor. It was impossible to go on in that way, honestly. After every game, the fault was on referee, regardless of the team performance (very poor in recent months). It is interesting to point out that we shouldnt talk about teams and coaches on a refereeing forum, but that's absolutely an extra-ordinary case. I also think that Rosetti will have better times while making appointments with Roma. Last but not least, still, FIGC to be blamed. They accepted Mourinho with his behavior, without issuing severe sanctions, but always one or two matches of ban. This was never enough, some days ago Rocchi hold a press conference and he denounced that it was impossible to keep this attitude regarding referees. Nevertheless, what I find particular is that many Roma fans are against the club for the decision they took today, that's because the Portuguese is seen as very strong leader, and most of fans think that if the team gets poor results, that's only due to low quality of the elements. They would have backed Mourinho whatever and in all circumstances, but to me it was clear that the coach was responsible for putting every football game like a unfair battle against referee and not like a football game...
Well there are other coaches who put pressure on officials and simply dont get media coverage like Mourinho.
Arteta blamed refs this year many times,Klopp does that every time Liverpool loses,Xavi's bad year has also been influenced in his opinion by referees and this whole agenda that whole Spain is against Barcelona and Catalonia and so on...
During the game also these coaches above and also,Sarri,Mazzari,Inzaghi are protesting and very often they get booked.
So it's not just Mourinho that is criticizing refs, but he is the biggest name and does not have good relationship with media so every time he criticizes refs that is underlined and printed in big letters. Especially in Italy where he was biggest coaching name in last 15 years.
Some are going so far and saying that this year Taylor is having bad year cause Mourinho influenced that and his trauma in last year's EL final.
Yep,it's best to blame him for everything bad that happens with referees.
And some small football opinion. I agree with fans that it's a shame that Jose was fired, what more could he do at such limited club? 2 european finals, club being relevant after long time...
But if this helps officiating in Italy, then okay. But problems will for sure be there even without Mourinho. Just no more pressure.
About Mourinho, you should never forget this story - fairly recently (in the last 1/2yrs) I watched the Barcelona vs. Inter second leg from 2010. How many times do you think he left the technical area? Answer: ONCE. And, he was IMMEDIATELY warned by De Bleeckere, having been called over by Gumienny. Mourinho didn't transgress again. We can compare to the circus of nowadays...
There are lots of funny things about the RAP, but one of them is to continually read UEFA talking about "strict action" against bad behaviour in the technical areas. Yes, it is good that they are firmer than FIFA at the last WC. But: this was never ever a serious or continual issue in the past, it is a problem entirely of UEFA and FIFA's own making (especially, though not entirely, with the stupid 'cards for managers').
Managers like Mourinho are only CORRECTLY interpreting the attitudes of the governing bodies. In my opinion, we can't blame him.
