ReplyDeletesc Heerenveen - Go Ahead Eagles
Referee: Serdar Gözübüyük / VAR: Laurens Gerrets
https://x.com/kowet_deventer/status/1855666717709541413
1-1 of Go Ahead looked entirely correct but VAR intervened, the goal was cancelled. There was soft pushing at the beginning of the attacking phase.
The Heerenveen player who was knocked down quickly got up and had no real problems defending. Even though it was a foul play, it had nothing to do with the goal actually, and it was the first time I'd seen VAR intervene in a situation like this. For example, we often see VAR allowing a foul play in an irrelevant spot, such as a corner kick.
I really thought there is actually that kind of unity of intent among the referees!
I've never been a fan of the way Gerrets works as VAR, but I'm really surprised the UEFA referee took this decision and I don't think the UEFA Referees Committee will be happy about it either.
There can be always a big discussion about such situations.
DeleteBasically, yuu are right when you say that this push had not real effect into the action, as the player continued after that and ball was still far, but of course, you will agree, you can't deny the action and the foul committed. So, in my opinion, there should be clear guidelines about that: should we punish a foul even if blatant but not strictly connected to a goal scored, with many contacts that can happen between players?
Here two arguments for VAR can be: 1) very likely Gozubuyuk and his team totally missed it 2) the push was with two arms, surely more evident than a single arm.
Strictly according to protocol and maybe also in UEFA, I think this could be assessed as not enough for an intervention (mostly because nobody would have questioned, as you said, ended without effects on the player), but I'm not 100% sure.
The problem is always consistency, you should have all VARs calling this one, or ignoring it, but of course it's impossible, and this raises question on the real benefit of VAR in such situations (it dependes on VAR discretion to call it or not).
Also, I think hard for Gozubuyuk to keep eyes closed after the OFR, you have clear foul... but in UEFA, very likely, he wouldn't have been called for that, so he wouldn't have faced the issue of deciding at all :)
Thanks for the detailed comment, Chefren.
DeleteAt least within the KNVB this will spark discussion among the referees.
Hopefully Raymond van Meenen (successor of Dick van Egmond) will do well. Unfortunately, Nederland is increasingly lagging behind the top countries when it comes to explaining decisions and disclosing information. I already miss the days when they would talk in front of the cameras after games.

I doubt it will be Kovacs, in Hungary group. So, it's impossible to be in Sarajevo. Why Bastien for Rosetti? Fo me, theyr could be also Delajod. And, for Romania - Kosovo, I don't think it's Chiffi, and I expect an important referee, that could be Siebert, because the observer is Mikulski, a regular observer for Elite referees. By the way, you missed Marciniak for this games.
DeleteWe have for the first time a man officiating as main referee a Women's game in UEFA competition, I think...
