France - Israel: missing / late appointment due to the incidents in Ajax - Maccabi Tel Aviv and then more focus on this game? But how could this influence the appointment? Very likely it should be for something out of the field and not involving referee, in case (rather, the UEFA delegate). Or maybe just a coincidence that exactly this one with Israel is missing, but it can be for other reasons...

Tobias Stieler for France-Israel
ReplyDeleteWow! A video on X of David Coote speaking about his dislike of Jurgen Klopp, clearly an old video which has now been posted a few years later. It may be just a lookalike, but I met Coote on my referee course in 2017 and he sounds like he does in the video, so now a massive decision for Howard Webb to make and something he absolutely must address publicly

Seems like a replacement then, Stieler already did France against Belgium in September
DeleteYes, should be a replacement.
DeleteI doubt the Refcom appointed a Elite referee on beforehand. Probably a Cat2/Cat1. Game was not expected to be challenging on the pitch itself, the French team so much stronger and playing at home. It seemed a good opportunity for a young referee (from a smaller country) to gain a nice experience at Stade de France.
However, now with increased media attention and focus, 3000 cops and acte de présence of the French president, UEFA didn’t want to take a risk? Or thought the initial appointed referee wasn’t ready for it? What happened in Amsterdam is serious sh*t
Good arguments Ref88. If committee switched from a less experienced referee to Stieler, that should be the reason. We saw all the appointments for Israeli clubs and national team so far, I think the difficulty of the game doesn't matter, easy win by France expected...
DeleteBREAKING NEWS
ReplyDeleteEnglish referee and FIFA VMO David Coote has been suspended by PGMOL after a video surfaced on him calling Liverpool sh*t and Jürgen Klopp a c*nt on social media:
PGMOL statement:
David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.
The video(s):
https://x.com/Josh97LFC/status/1855968991119872392
We can never know with AI and so on nowadays, but it certainly doesn't look good for him I would say. Especially since he's refereed Liverpool multiple times before and after that video was allegedly made
DeleteSo far, Klopp has not commented on the matter, but I believe that legal measures will be taken by the German coach due to Coote's statements.
DeleteWell the video of David Coote not sure when it was filmed but he suggests he has a grudge against Jurgen Klopp after lockdown, he was involved in huge controversy as a VAR in Everton vs Liverpool earlier the following season where he didn't even check for a red card for Pickford's knee high tackle on Van Dijk and controversially ruled out a last minute liverpool winning goal.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think the specific comments about Liverpool and Klopp will be the most sensational aspect of this, I imagine the actual investigation will focus more on Coote's state of mind and how he allowed himself to be in a situation where such a recording was possible and such rhetoric freely flowed from him.
DeleteDon't get me wrong, the content of the remarks are enough to be very problematic for the PGMOL overall and very harmful to Coote's ability to be assigned to any match with implications for Liverpool. But the associated behavior might be what actually sinks him as a top-flight official overall.
The whole Coote affair can be summed up in a short thought.
DeleteOnly important thing to check if the video is real and not artificially created.
If true, in all cases, then it must be the end of career.
Obviously unacceptable what he says in the video.
Even if perhaps drunk, not mentally present or something else, the fault of being recorded in that video is atrocious for a referee at this level.
Shocking and not a little. There is no forgiveness in these cases, because it is impossible to return to refereeing, especially following the implications with the team mentioned, which obviously can't be deleted of modified.
My only hope is that the video is all fake, otherwise it is one of the worst pages ever.
Also he was VAR in the Arsenal vs Liverpool game last season when Odegaard's blatant handball wasn't punished
ReplyDeleteSrdjan Jovanovic failed fitness tests again due to injury. I dont know why he dont take break and recover.. Even when he ref in league you can see him strugling..
ReplyDeleteRosetti to observe Rumsas in Portugal - Poland.
ReplyDeleteIt's the key game for the Lithuanian, looking for promotion to Elite category. One could even say that he already did enough to get it in the years, but this looks to be definitely the last step.
Oliver with only Gillett as VAR at moment no AVAR appointment.
Very easy to think that Coote was in a role of the two in the VAR room and then now to be replaced...

And also, Peter Bankes confirmed as AVAR in SVNNOR
DeleteWhat is your view of appointing Petrescu for that match, as Cheferin as a observer;
ReplyDeleteKrogh Hansen with Mikulski (who usually observe Elite referees) ?
Any other interesting appointment for you?
Darko Čeferin was a Slovenian FIFA referee and is in no way related to the UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin
DeleteAnother strong appointment for Petrescu after his recent CL and EL games. Looks like he is on a good path towards Elite, but maybe Fesnic also getting good games and being much younger is a problem.
DeleteKrogh is a normal appointment, I think. Top game of the group, but only league C, so it fits his current status, I think.
Obrenovic also has to be seen as strong Elite candidate with this appointment (+ 2 CL games already).
Sidiropoulos only in league C again and without CL game, should be a candidate for demotion.
Turpin is back in action.
ReplyDeleteShould get a big game in MD5.
Could be Liverpool vs Real Madrid.
Rosetti wants to see Rumsas in a one-side game really huh..If he really is allegedly ready to move up to the elite, why should a game like this be the final test? It makes no sense... And btw who is also in this situation of allegedly going up to the elite only lacking the final tests??
ReplyDeleteWell, Portugal - Poland is not that one-sided game, honestly. Maybe Poland not in the best moment, but still a nice clash and in my opinion open to any outcome.
DeleteWe will see, important to watch this one with the Lithuanian involved.
In my opinion at moment he should be listed as nr. 1 in a "supposed" ranking of the Category 1 referees fighting for a promotion. In recent years, hehas been definitely the one more in focus and the one who achieved more.
Trust me its a one-side game for sure 100% and imo nobody knows what Rosetti wants for this game in fact not even him himself knows what he wants. There were far more difficult games Rosetti could appoint him to ( if it is to be is final test - game of his life allegations ) - than this one at least prove me right in this point ...
DeleteNo spanish referees again?
ReplyDeleteTürkiye-Wales, Munuera...
DeleteNetherlands-Hungary, Gil Manzano
DeleteSpanish referees are back, and it's interesting we see again Martinez Munuera after this game in CL. Of course this time without his brother, but with different assistant referees. Most of the mistakes were about offside for sure, but his performance as referee was not the best one!
ReplyDeleteScharer back after the mistake in Champions League, it will be interesting to see whether San will be confirmed as VAR. I think so, it was just one mistake, even if very big and without explanations.
Decent assignment for Balakin in Sweden, at least it seems now he is following a path and he can get more interesting games in future.
The rest, quite normal appointments, apart from Fotias in Greece, this one must be mentioned and if possible also watched. Feeling is that they are looking now for the new nr.1 from that country, after Sidiropoulos will leave the scene. We saw even Elite referees in past assigned to a clash like the one in Freiburg, but to me in recent times Bosnian national team lost most of their talent.
Last comments about the VAR: Kristo Tohver after having announced his semi-retirement will be VAR, possible that now the focus will be on other Estonian referees and I'm really sorry if he couln't reach more, like the Champions League debut. Moreover, some words must be said again on Bebek... defining his career as strange is maybe not enough. In both field and VAR it seems he reached the top for a while, but then suddenly something changed. From a quite trusted and experienced UEFA VAR now it seems as his role is over again, but, like it was for the field duties, he hasn't "fully" retired and he is still there, working only as AVAR. Very, very particular. He was never stable in his career, but in terms of experience and years of UEFA games, it's rare if not almost impossible to find similar names. A case maybe to be studied, the first regret is that he could have achieved absolutely more. And yes, all the troubles with Crotian referees in recent time in domestic league, surely didn't help him in keeping a reputation and solid assignments in UEFA...
There has been no demotion during more years from Elite, only referees who has stopped the careers!
ReplyDeleteKrogh at Romania vs Kosovo is a very risky choice, for two reasons:
ReplyDelete1) He refereed Steaua Bucharest vs Sparta Prague in UCL preliminary rounds this season and his performance was heavily criticized by Romanian sport outlets. Krogh took several decision in favor of the away team in that game (team which lined up two Danish players and also has Danish coach). Some of the controversial decisions in that game:
29' - possible missed pen for FCSB + 2YC awareded for dissent: https://youtu.be/t7RHZnyqEG4?si=nhPwmYDKpfMIYk5k&t=221
50' - clear 2nd YC missed for Preciado (Sparta). Even their coach realized it should have been a RC and replaced the player after two minutes:
https://youtu.be/t7RHZnyqEG4?si=PNUEU2F6OGWMXBo4
2) Romania is one of the few countries that doesn't recognize Kosovo. Relations between them are very tense, and the game played in Bucharest in 2023 was stopped for almost one hour, because the Romanian ultras showed a banner saying "Kosovo is Serbia". Also at the game played in September in this Nations League group in Pristina, Kosovo fans had a savage behavior, booing and whistling the Romanian national anthem, throwing with bottles towards the bench and invading the pitch three times in the 2nd half.
The 50,000 tickets for this game were sold out in less than 3 days, and a win for Romania can guarantee them a place in the WC 2026 play-offs through the Nations League path, so the game it is expected to be played in a volcanic atmosphere, for which I have big doubts that Morten Krogh is the right choice.
Agree, surprised they didn't appoint Makkelie cause he is safe choice for this type of matches.
DeleteRomania can't qualify for WC playoffs in League C. Only League A+B teams can.
DeleteWhere does it says that? The best four Nations League group winners that did not qualify for play-offs or directly to WC (so 24 teams)
DeleteThey changed the criteria from NL overall ranking to NL group winners? Didn't know that, thanks for correcting me.
DeleteBut even with the new criteria, Group C winners only have priority 9-12 and far from a guaranteed playoff spot as stated by Mobley.
2026 FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA)
Delete"(play-off stage): Sixteen teams (twelve group runners-up and four best Nations League group winners, based on the Nations League overall ranking, that finished outside the top two of their qualifying group) will be drawn into four paths"
I understand that only the group winners are selected based on the overall NL overall ranking.
Well, your analysis proved correct. Totally unfair on the Danish referee to be put in this situation. This was a game for Makkelie, Turpin, Taylor or Marciniak only
DeleteBritish sensationalist tabloid The Sun has published a bombshell report about David Coote, including a video that (reportedly) shows the man snorting cocaine in his hotel room in Frankfurt the day after GERESP match in EURO 2024 (!)
ReplyDeletehttps://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/31689845/premier-league-ref-david-coote-snorts-white-powder/
https://talksport.com/football/2264693/premier-league-david-coote-new-video-referee/
DeleteAre officials drug tested?
He was not part of the GERESP VAR team.
DeleteAnd the VARs were staying in Leipzig, not in Frankfurt, during the EURO as far as I know.
Jesus...
DeletePossible that there were some VARs working as "back up" from the stadium (in case of connection issues from Leipzig), I heard that in past. Not officially published in the appointments by UEFA.
DeleteThat would explain why Coote, in case, if it's him in the video, was there on that day and not from the VAR Room in Leipzig.
BTW let me say it's shocking to publish such stuff.
Coote was AVAR1 in Portugal-France, played on 5 July in Hamburg, Michael Oliver was referee. Same day as Spain-Germany, 3 hours later.
DeleteIt seems as now they have modified the text in the article by The Sun, adding new information
DeleteThink about UEFA, too. One of their (VAR) referees managed to smuggle coke into the referees hotel/HQ in a big tournament. It's a very serious security breach in my book.
DeleteCoote attended U17 WC in Indonesia last year as VAR, had he tried to get or smuggle cocaine there he'd have faced the death penalty.
I'm sorry, but according to the press videos, it's not possible to formally identify Coote in this video. I think he can benefit from the doubt.
Deletehttps://x.com/thetimes/status/1856865106162061324?t=OIz1qdgkv7rokC13WM_SbQ&s=19
DeleteUEFA has suspended Coote
Terrible this is happening, assuming it is real which has to be proved. If true, absolutely irresponsible behaviour from Coote. And this also shines a negative light on the entire English refereeing corps. And on UEFA itself as ESF stated.
DeleteHaving said that, the deeper layer: as a referee, be careful who you trust. Keep your social circle small. Social media channels locked (including those of family). Not everyone is honest and trustworthy. There are people who want to be your friend in order to use you. There are people who’d want to throw you under the bus. Shocking but true. As a FIFA referee, don’t be naive and stay grounded/down to earth regardless of your reputation.
+ don't use drugs kids
DeleteI also thought about the fact that people could blackmail him so easily with these videos. Let's hope that this doesn't lead to a match-fixing scandal or something like that
Agree Hans. And to add, if videos are “real”, we can all criticize the referee and person Coote. But the fact that someone deliberately published these videos is also mindblowing to me. We can argue that this should be a person who deliberately aims to damage the person Coote and his career.
DeleteBy doing that, I would argue that this ”friend” has some serious issues himself (but this is pure speculative of course).
I agree Ref88. And from a football perspective, the potential for blackmail (or even, non-explicit blackmail but the fear of this video getting published) is much more concerning with regards to integrity/corruption issues than the language Coote used about Mr. Klopp.

Okay, few observations:
- Spanish observers are back and I expect at least 2-3 Spanish refs in UCL as well;
- A Spanish observer in Bayern-PSG: very limited options there! No Spanish, Germans, French, Vincic and Marciniak. Could be an English?
- The delay for Italian team is ridiculous; one would almost think that clubs can veto the referee tbh…
Ref88, Italian clubs don't veto referees, but committee does that by themselves. The main target of Rosetti & Co. is to avoid any controversy after final whistle, no matter how, they must guess the exact and suitable referee for that. We can point out that Juventus had a particular path so far, they won some games, but in most of them, they played at the same level of opponents, drawing or losing and in some cases this was maybe unexpected. This can contribute to add the "accuracy" in the assignment. One wouldn't be surprised to read again Vincic name for Aston Villa - Juventus! :)
DeleteVery good for Rosetti to be back again in Monaco, after the incredible trip (for him), in Portugal. Definitely too far away from home.
Possible that after Rumsas, he will observe another candidate for promotion to Elite. The game should be rather a "serious" one, involving French and Portuguese side, this time I don't think about a referee with low experience, but rather the contrary, as it is done very often, and the choice of the game can be indeed because it's comfortable for Rosetti and nothing more than that.
Absolutely crucial days and weeks for the UEFA referees to be promoted or demoted on next categories update.
Bayern - PSG can be the game for Oliver, he was an option for previous PSG game. To follow, Kovacs as other candidate (but rather, some mistakes in his game in Milan). We have always same names here.
Yes, good points about Juve.
DeleteMy general idea is that a knowledgeable person close to the committee is drafting the appointments (e.g. Vassaras - this would also explain the way Kovacs is managed tbh) and that Rosetti only has to approve them. I doubt he has time to draft all appointments himself. Certainly possible that Rosetti wasn’t satisfied with the proposed name for Juve after their bad luck, hence the delay. I also wouldn’t be surprised to read Vincic’ name with Juve, because he didn’t referee both teams indeed :D
Oliver could work in München, however I do not expect Attwell with PSG again after the OFR that caused them a loss. Perhaps Oliver with a foreign VAR. Kovacs (with Italian or Dutch VAR) is also a good prediction.
I don’t think it can always be said that Rosetti’s goal is to minimize the potential for controversy. Otherwise, appointing Zwayer to NED-ENG semifinal at the Euros would have been absolutely impossible.

Čeferin in the stands in Ljubljana. Both Slovenia's games will be crucial for this group - AUT, SVN, NOR are fighting for advance (but also to avoid relegation play-off). Good luck to Michael Oliver and Glenn Nyberg!
ReplyDeletePenalty to Slovenia - Ceferin will be happy! (it's only my irony after EURO, I am not watching the game).
DeleteIt's a good call and normally I would praise a referee but in reality such fouls (head strike against head) are always deemed as collisions in penalty areas (and even in the middle FKs are rarely whistled). Shortly afterwards not even a warning issued to 13SVN after blatant dissenting gesture...
Deletehttps://streamin.me/v/38454350
DeleteHere the foul called (nr. 17 Norway against nr. 17 Slovenia while jumping).
You can support by book, but that's clearly a normal collision and nothing more, never called indeed.
For me it‘s a wrong call and that shouldn’t have been a penalty. It was just a normal challenge, body against body. To be honest, I often get the impression that referees officiate with a backpack full of fear of making a mistake against Slovenia when they have to referee a game with Slovenia. That can’t be right!
DeleteWe all remember how Cakir was treated after he made a mistake against Slovenia a few years ago.
Very good first half by Petrescu. Two yellow cards, both mandatory, first one for a reckless challenge, second for holding, stopping a counterattack. There were some tense moments in which referee called players to him and gave some warinings. Not an easy game, but I would say he was always in control, so far.
ReplyDeleteDodgy half by Siebert
ReplyDeleteYes, I thought it was a bit suspect (clips below). Cautions to Bellingham and Gallagher were absolutely correct according to the laws, dissent and not retreating respectively; I'd praise both decisions. Then, Masouras was justifiably cautioned for persistence though personally I'd have preferred a final warning. I dislike the time-wasting caution to Pickford as it seemed assisted by the crowd booing. Unfortunately, Siebert then bottled (appropriate term) sending off Masouras who committed a clear LoR holding. You can see the German (very likely) reach for the left pocket before changing his mind! Greek no7 called his bluff and Siebert ref 'swallowed' the SYC call. Overall, his decisions have felt a bit unpredictable. This half has ascertained my view: Zwayer is no1.

The way he officiated the game, that should be a second yellow for Masouras. He definitely thought about it
DeleteWell, you can already write a very long report based on what happened in first half in Siebert game. Thanks for the clip, even without watching it, one can have the full perception of how he officiated. Very strict about dissent and unsporting behaviors, but not accurate while assessing challenges.
DeleteIn my opinion if you start a game in a so strict way (I think he is the only referee at moment in UEFA) then you should apply the same also for the reckless challenges, otherwise you miss consistency. While you can praise the referee for the early bookings, you can say that he missed for sure the second card for that holding, that was also lack of respect. After having been so strict in first half, he was afraid to have a player sent off as final result, and that's not good. Then, another YC missed in the last clip you posted, for sure he didn't notice the reckless nature of the challenge by Greek player.
While it's important to enforce the laws, one shouldn't forget that assessing the severity of offences is crucial for a referee.
A more balanced style should be selected, but clearly he can't manage to do that, and if he keeps officiating games in this way, committee will never appoint him again fro a top clash, that's sure. In modern football, having such approach leads to many and many controversial situations, referee that can't officiate again some teams, and so on. As Mikael said, you don't know what to expect by him, but that's also because he is not very natural, rather he is "looking for" applying the rules.
Ya, very weird match by Siebert. I can add a stamp foul approximately 35' - also a mandatory card.
DeleteI watched a few matches refereed by German referee and I can describe his style - "expect of everything" - he has a totally lack of consistency... In whole career and in matches.

Siebert changed his style. In 'Siebert 1.0' he chose a very specific way of handling the games, hogging the middle of the FoP and focusing hugely on assessing duels and on body tension in his gestures. Despite an extremely modest athletic profile, this allowed him to handle challenging matches (cf Arab Cup Final Algeria-Tunisia) in a good way. Then as we know, he totally lost his form. In 'Siebert 2.0' starting from 2024, he tried to act like a 'normal' referee and ditched the style spoke about before. While to the untrained eye he now seems closer to the play, his foul recognition is average at best and the German isn't really 'in control of the pitch'. Despite giving a high number of cards (the same tonight in YB-Gala), it doesn't feel like the matches are in his grasp very much and could explode at any moment (see Switzerland-Denmark). With this change in style, Siebert actually does prove the old axiom always said about him: he can't handle tough games. Unless there is a remarkable change, the 2021 by the German referee must be assessed as a "flash in the pan" and actually nothing more.
Second half Petrescu: maybe in 71' a missed YC.
ReplyDeleteRight now, 76', correct play on following a penalty appeal by Belgium, correct not to whistle (another Belgian player booked for dissent), but rewatching the incident he could have also booked for simulation, as it was a clear attempt to win a penalty. Still, a crucial decision correctly taken, but maybe things could have been done better.
Republic of Ireland - Finland, OFR for handball penalty, referee Osmers.
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/e5133a
Correct call by VAR, referee had a perfect positioning and free view on the incident, but he didn't spot it. I think he thought about a touch with another part od the body.
If this was a test for Petrescu to join the Elite winter promotion race (there's room for a 'swap' considering Hategan is leaving the list on January), IMO he passed it tonight.

DeleteIt seems as PGMOL will now introduce anti drugs tests for referees, better later than never? However, still unbelievable if you ask me, then also UEFA should do maybe something like that? One can't expect that a referee, having reached a certain level, must be checked under this aspect...
ReplyDeleteReminded me a little bit of time, when Russian Football Union were testing referees on polygraph. Both testing methods are unacceptable and unbelievable.
DeleteFrance - Israel, Tobias Stieler.
ReplyDelete23' Careless arm
https://streambug.org/cv/701fd5
One can agree with the referee's assessment, not a reckless action, always very difficult to read such actions.
35' Very risky but regular action on the ball by Israeli defender in a DOGSO scenario, then correct YC for holding, SPA on the counterattack (the fouling player had already tried the same with the previous opponent, so even more justified YC for me, after the second action)
https://streambug.org/cv/9f112c
43' PAI
https://streambug.org/cv/42bb91
The same player involved in previous situation, already yellow-carded. Falling down before / using opponent to create a contact, very clear to me, even during live sequence and indeed good assessment by Stieler who made immediately that gesture by hand. Unfortunately, for me such situations must be punished by YC and I think the German was very aware of the action by player, but he didn't want to book because this would have been the second card for him. I would bet that in case of no card, French would have received it.
How much a clear crucial mistake by German referee? One can discuss, but it's always a issue when you have such unpleasant situations to manage on the pitch. Extremely fair game, only player already booked a fter a few minutes commits this one. He decided for a warning, but well... to me this is a rather evident missed second YC and so crucial mistake.
49' YC for unsporting behavior
https://streambug.org/cv/250221
This one should be for the reaction, taking ball away, after the whistled foul.
52' PAI
https://streambug.org/cv/38a1e9
Again a correct decision by referee to play on. Differently from first half, I think no card for simulation is OK here because you have the arm by Israeli player making a (soft action) and you don't have perception of a fully created contact. Good by Stieler who, in any case, couldn't have booked a player for simulation in this game, after having missed a very clear one...
70' YC for SPA - Impeding
https://streambug.org/cv/bb62a8
Correct decision by referee.
90'+2 Cynical foul, in my opinion missed YC for SPA as well. A card to be issued.
https://streambug.org/cv/e9bfdb
Not the final score one could have expected, neverheless the game was not very challenging for the German referee. He had some busy moments, but all is about the possible second YC for French player in first half. It depends on that, and the performance can be perceived as fully different. To me he was aware and he should have booked him (no doubts that a referee like Balakin would have done that, after the reaction by player asking for the call by referee). These are the troubles of modern refereeing...
Also, as second remark, missed very clear YC on 90'+2 (no, at least in this case the player was not already booked).
Positive points were control of the game, but as said, never challenging for him, added time, very good with 7 minutes in second half, and foul detection was very good overall.
Cyprus - Lihuania 23' offside flag by AR1. Wrong timing because Cyprus had a goal scoring opportunity and IMO even wrong assessment.
ReplyDeleteThe defender was not challenged while heading the ball and the player who got the ball after deflection was clearly onside.
Video:
Deletehttps://streambug.org/cv/495203
It is as you described. Very rare to see such a wrong flag.
Player ONSIDE, no "influence" on opponent (that's an old school offside" call, today not accepted anymore), and also wrong timing (Cyprus about to have a OGSO...).
Goga Kikacheishvili in North Macedonia - Latvia.
ReplyDelete30' YC for late / reckless challenge
https://streambug.org/cv/af59ee
With ball already played by opponent, referee decided to open the bookings in this occasion. I think the YC here is not 100% mandatory, if you look at it closely, you can find argument for a careless action, nevertheless, can't describe this decision as clear mistake.
36' Management of time wasting
https://streambug.org/cv/ca15e3
Definitely a different approach than Siebert, the Georgian referee decided to issue a warning and not to book the player. Latvia tried to defend the 0-0 score wihout doing that much during the game, this was the pattern.
53' YC for SPA
https://streambug.org/cv/1f1a91
Correct decision, deliberately stopping opponent on a quick attack.
55' YC for reckless challenge
https://streambug.org/cv/5de9b6
Mandatory card, reported by AR2 as well. Arguments for VAR to intervene, but I think you can support this one, in case of red card VAR would have stayed silent as well. Also an unlucky circumstance, but surely the challenge was very dangerous.
84' YC for reckless
https://streambug.org/cv/b3324c
Very clear decision.
87' Foul / offside
https://streambug.org/cv/7d029c
Correct offside decision, it materialized before the potential foul.
89' Disallowed goal AR2
https://streambug.org/cv/38d88d
90'+4 Advantage, YC, management
https://streambug.org/cv/af9caa
Surely the most complex situation of the game, difficult to judge because it is not clear who was booked by referee, as there was a replay during the crucial moments and while the live video reported the Macedonian player getting the card for the second foul, after the advantage, all sites including UEFA say that only Latvian player was booked (first foul in the early seconds of the video, you see referee making advantage gesture). I think he didn't recognize immediately which player he had to book, but I can't say more, my idea is that he showed it for both (otherwise too long time with the card in the hand), but it can't be checked. Card for Macedonian player stopping the counterattack in that way looked to be evident, impossible to say more about the first foul when he gave advantage, no replay about that situation. Nevertheless, in all cases, not a big affair.
The game was not really challenging for the referee, at least until the very last minutes, overall a quite regular performance, but something could have definitely done better. Home team attacking and visitors trying to defend, this lasted from 1' to 90'. In addition to the clips I posted, I must add that there were a couple of soft fouls, and in my opinion he could have allowed the game to flow more. AR2 very challenged, all correct decisions including disallowed goal, but a mistake in the first involvement (6'). He recovered after that. AR1 less challenged.
Also, some moments of tension after the final whistle, but I think there could be specific reasons not directly related to this game, because the crowd was definitely hostile against the Latvian side since the beginning (nevertheless, this didn't make the game impossible for referee, if compared to other contexts).

Turpin ought imo to have sent off Terzic imo (SFP challenge), but instead the French ref gave only a yellow card.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.streambug.io/cv/918978
DeleteOne should note the studs weren't fully extended, but in my mind that is still SFP. Curious for other opinions?
Meanwhile, Turpin was too forgiving in my book to not caution these two deliberate fouls:
https://www.streambug.io/cv/d8a45b
https://www.streambug.io/cv/d44e11
Absolutely SFP. I suppose Turpin might be looking through the offender's back but someone has to help him there, if so. And why no VAR intervention if the team can't get it correct on-field?
DeleteCommenting all three clips together, one could say very lenient Turpin. YC when RC was possible (real option, indeed, one can read the excessive force used in the challenge), and two very clear missed YC. First one for SPA, second for late and reckless. In the first case, it was clearly a deliberate choice by him, while one can have doubts about the last clip that he didn't perceive the exact nature of the incident, being far and with ball already kicked. But in that case either AR1 or FO should have suggested YC. For me indeee clear cards missed by French referee. And back to the main clip, about possible RC, we can't find consistency but yes, since serious foul plays are very often grey area (not 100% red cards) we will continue forever with this issue... let's also remember the Vincic incident, when VAR didn't intervene, for some aspects, for UEFA such yellow cards seem to be OK.
DeleteLate goal by Terzic!! Worst possible outcome for Turpin
Delete2yc for Croatia. Really good decision. 1st yellow.is more debatable
ReplyDelete1st YC was wrong and 2nd YC is wrong as well IMO, in any case very soft.
Delete2yc is 100%. Catches him with his studs above the knee
DeleteJust rewatched it. The foot was going down, the contact with the foot is without force and negligible. The only real contact is the upper body contact, which is not enough for a YC.
Deletehttps://streamin.me/v/33587ff8
DeleteHere the clip, based on the video, it's impossible to say whether studs made contact with opponent, otherwise a very clear yellow card. Staying only at the upper body contact, one could say still supportable decision, but rarely or never given.
I think very unlucky for Grinfeld here, because it is difficult to see. Same as the first YC, which was also difficult to see. And VAR can't help him here because it is not a direct RC. So there's not much he can do. Hope it goes better in 2nd half.
Delete1st was a knee to the arse, and 2nd going frame by frame the contact is with the side of the boot/ankle not studs.
DeleteHowever the worst challenge of the half was on 41' with the forearm to the head which could've been more than a YC tbh.
Here first YC: https://streambug.org/cv/0f7b9a
DeleteA situation in which you can expect a YC but for some people it can be soft.
Rumsas doing everything he hasn't done for I don't know how many years, 100% hype 1% refereeing. Blows the whistle on what isnt, doesn't blow the whistle on what is. This is not the Rumsas I saw irl last season
ReplyDeleteNow yc for Ronaldo, absolute cinema.
ReplyDeleteCroatia unhappy with Grienfeld. Losing their discipline completely. I must say that a lot of 50/50 decisions have gone Scotland's way in the game but the 2yc was spot on
ReplyDeleteTerrible behaviour by Ronaldo after a collision in POL penalty area. The Portuguese wanted a penalty (never) and was very explosive in his gestures. As he continued after Rumšas gone serious, he was rightly cautioned. Also good to refuse any talk with POR players after the whistle for half time.
ReplyDeleteI just hope this game doesn't have any surprises like Valencia vs Juventus in 2018.
DeleteVery poor performance by Grinfeld so far:
ReplyDelete- Player sent off after two wrong YCs.
- YC to Modric for protest.
- Missed corner directly afterwards.
Poor performance because "Modric was booked for protest", said Modric... :)
Delete2 or 3 corners missed.
DeleteWith a way he's handling the match,I would not be surprised that we see some compromise and refereeing to have some decisions in 2nd half against SCO.
Well that protest would not have happened if he was right in his disciplinary control.
DeleteToo harsh YC's for CRO player Sucic, first bug foul from CRO,right away YC.
He also forget to book SCO players for similar fouls.
:-) booking Modric for protest was correct I admit
Deletebut still not a good look for him because Modric was right to protest his previous decisions
Turns out the YC was for Kramaric and not for Modric, this was clarified after the match. Other than that, uneventful 2nd half in terms of refereeing, everything calmed down.
DeleteSad to say, but in last years Grinfeld became extremely arrogant and considers himself the main star of the match. His level of performance in Israeli league matches has declined catastrophically...
DeleteSoft first yc for Sucic I agree but second yc was mandatory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmXHHZYb_CI 2nd yc from 2:08
DeleteI have written before about no demoted referees from Elite, here is one of them who shouldn't be there!
ReplyDeleteAbout the yellow card issued to Cristiano Ronaldo, you can see that Rumsas left immediately the scene after having done that. If he had stayed, he would have had to show second card, as the famous player from Portugal continued his action. Will Rosetti be content with this management? It's sure that some players are extremely difficult to be managed by referee, but my sincere and honest opinion, you know, is that I wouldn't care at all about them, I would stay there, and in case of persistent behavior, no troubles for me in showing second yellow cards and red cards. But that's modern refereeing...
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but why Ronaldo was so aggressive, maybe because of situation before
DeleteIn recent times, he has been always so aggressive with referees, believe me. You don't find to need a strong reason in the specific game to understand why. I think that year after year he feels more to be a superstar and everything must be done to please him - nothing more...
DeletePenalty whistled for NIR in Belfast. But really harsh I think on the BRS defender whose arm was close to the body IMO.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/89d13cf4
DeleteAgree, didn't expect an OFR there tbh.
DeleteWithout closer replays and based on what I can see in the short clip, wrong OFR indeed, and that's very strange by a Portuguese crew.
DeleteReplays give the impression the ball struck the left arm but there is a angle where the ball hits the right hand which was slightly more away from the body, but not enough in my view for the OFR. That’s football nowadays.
Delete“An” angle. Excuse my poor grammar.
DeleteExactly, Fraha, that was possible reason, but still one can discuss and not 100% clear.
Deleteeasy first half for Rumsas, but a very lazy style, 24' missed a foul and mandatory YC even border red, at the same time a minute later carelles foul and yc for Port, no balance. and several missed fouls that Ronaldo blew up, of course you can’t behaviour like that and yc is ok.
ReplyDeleteCorrect PK for handball by Rumsas.
ReplyDeleteA full section of circumstanses with Ronaldo in Portugal-Poland:
ReplyDelete22' - Bednarek fouls Ronaldo, possible YC, Ronaldo wanted a card for polish defender, Rumsas whistled only foul
23' - Very dangerous tackle by Zielinski, missed by Rumsas, for me it's borderline YC/RC
25' - A first foul by Portugal team, YC to Neves (not mandatory, specially if we compare this foul with tackle by Zielinski two minutes before)
25' - Disccussion by portuguese team with YC to Bruno (missed next match!)- why Rumsas booked Neves, when Bednarek and Zielinski didn't get a YC for similar or harder fouls
43' - Another foul by Bednarek, another complaints by Ronaldo to referee
45+1- expulsion by Ronaldo ;) I suppose that was a effect by whole half, not only this one situation
Yes, I am from Poland, and 5-1 was thanks to the referee who must have gotten instructions from UEFA not to 'kill' the game in 1st half, so he refereed this way to offset the gap between the Portuguese and the Polish football. In case of objective refereeing the score would be ca. 10-1 with Zielinski sent off in 1st half.
DeleteNot a one-side game said Chefren. Rumsas is NOT elite stuff. At least this game is not showing us that at all.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least the score was 0-0 and after that 1-0 for a rather long time. But yes after the final whistle very easy win by Portugal. Don't know in particular about Rumsas, didn' watch game but only the mentioned incidents.
DeleteAgreed, good PK sign, but in easy match to much missed YC and fouls, for elite not enough
ReplyDeleteFor Turpin, two big incidents in the second half:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.streambug.io/cv/b51d9e
https://www.streambug.io/cv/ecd4ef
Correct not to send off Embolo, clearly not excessive force, but UEFA will be unhappy that technical staff members entered the FoP. Penalty at least supportable.
Penalty only supportable but for me soft and rather a mistake.
DeleteI'm sure he thought about a more significant incident when he whistled.
About the other incident, agree that YC is OK, no clear straight RC for violent conduct. One should also higlight that the player kicked ball, without excessive force, against opponent, absoluely unsporting behavior, but OK, one must be extremely harsh to consider this one as another yellow card.
To be honest, it doesn't look like that Turpin ensured control on this game, by using that rather very lenient approach.
Krogh's game is not yet finished...
ReplyDeleteMatch suspended in 90+2'
DeleteAbsolute circus created (once again) by Kosovo.
ReplyDeleteIn min 90+2, their captain Amir Rrahmani started a conflict with a Romanian player, which inflated the spirits on the pitch. Several Kosovo players then provoked the Romanian ultras by showing a fascist symbol with their hands (the eagle), and the supporters started chanting "Serbia". Kosovo refused to continue to play and left the pitch. To mention that Krogh didn't stop the game, nor gave permission to the away team to leave.
Video of the initial conflict: streamable.com/zswa9k
And you dont think that ultras also provoked them throughout the whole match?
DeleteIt's wrong on both sides, that's for sure.
Watching the entire match, there were no Serbia chants/banners until the moment of interruption. In fact the game was much "cleaner" then expected, most of the fouls and cards being for regular fouls and not for dirty tackles.
DeleteMost likely the Kosovo team was frustrated with the result, since they were the better team but failed to score, and this was a desperate attempt to "win" the game by causing a scandal that ends up in a favorable decision from UEFA. However, since Krogh didn't stop the game, most likely this tactic will backfire and Kosovo will be handed a 3-0 loss.
Since when is the eagle a fascist symbol? People shouldn't throw this word around casually if they don't know what they're talking about.
DeleteGroundhog day in Bucharest.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the Albanian eagle symbol being 'a fascist symbol' as the user above, but honestly at this point Kosovo should have been handed over a loss for abandoning the pitch.
If each team left the pitch when are unhappy then what is the role of the referees and of the match delegates? 3-0 loss handed to Kosovo is the only logical decision.
DeleteI would guess a possible outcome is Romania 3-0 win, and then Romania also deducted 3 points?
DeleteOliver, -3 points for what?
DeleteNever mind. I thought that’s what happened with Serbia-Albania in 2014. Turns out it was a double punishment for Serbia. My mistake.
DeleteMaybe just recorded as 0-0 draw as the 90 minutes was played, this suits Romania anyway
Romanian players and referees are back on the pitch. Krogh was handed a phone to speak with someone.
ReplyDeleteFinal whistle by Krogh
ReplyDeleteUEFA was worried for France - Israel, there were particular incidents on the stands but not involving directly referee. But it seems as committee didn't expect this one to happen in Romania - Kosovo, by selecting the Danish and not a more experienced referee. But yes,
ReplyDeletethe game in France was by fare more on the spotlights, while nobody talks about Romania - Kosovo, even if something like that happened, and we saw that this is one of the first concerns by committee in recent years. The particular thing in Bucharest was also that the UEFA delegate was from Montenegro (a very experienced one).
All the situations mentioned from Rumsas game.

The other two cards in second half were correct and mandatory, Polish payer wasting time (56') and reckless by Portuguese player (90'+1).
The big miss is YC to Zielinski, but clearly he didn't see the foul, and then also other missed situations in which Ronaldo protested. Nevertheless, as I said for Visser, referee must be stronger with Ronaldo, it seems they are afraid to take more severe disciplinary measures against him.
Positive point was the penalty, technically excellent call, with a good movement and this is what committee is looking for.
How to assess this performance? Surely more negative aspects in my opinion, but last word is up to Roberto Rosetti, I don't think this game is enough to say that Rumsas is not good for Elite.
But still, he should have done better...
Agree, the penalty is an excellent decision, but I dont like his disciplinary management. He has many aspects to improve, but I think he will be a great referee
DeleteSleepy first half in Azerbaijan-Estonia, this sequence the only of note for Beaton:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.streambug.io/cv/d052eb
Good 2H and overall performance by the Scottish ref who approached this (sort of) game in the correct manner, rightly issuing bookings when YC offences occurred. Clip of the penultimate caution is below, the borderline to SFP being in sight. Clear 8,4-level showing by Beaton, indeed that should be the mark given by the Albanian assessor.
Deletehttps://www.streambug.io/cv/cde485
As a more general comment, I wonder whether with a more 'glamorous' athletic profile if John Beaton could have become a UEFA Elite referee. His performances were always strong in the games I've watched (same style of refereeing as the great Peter Mikkelsen).
Spanish referees as we know them. No PK for that position.

DeleteJust to speak in copliments about Minakovic performance at Cyprus, one situation with offside, but nothing more. He continiue to develop in right way!
ReplyDelete*compliments:)
DeleteNo bigger issues, indeed, apart from the offside. That was a start-stop game with 43 fouls(!!!). In 3-4 cases one could discuss about possible YC for SPA and maybe playing an advantage would be better in two situations but overall it was a good performance.
DeleteI think Rocchi gave AR1 no more than 7.9. In Italy, you'd get a one month suspension for such a call.
DeleteAs regards Minakovic, I agree: good performance in quite a rough match.
I d like to watch another replay but from what I ve seen Turkey's penalty was wrongly awarded, Welsh defender played the ball
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/fa8367b0
DeleteHere the video, I think that it wasn't a very clean action on the ball, and so VAR confirmed the call by referee, but my feeling is that another VAR would have called the Spanish to rewatch. Not a very clear penalty to my eyes, but maybe a supportable call. Also, from a replay I think that based on referee's point of view on the incident, a play on was more expected decision here.
I’m also somewhat in trouble defending the penalty call. It’s extremely tight, but I think the defender plays the ball just before bringing down the attacker. Admitted, very risky tackle and maybe(?) VAR found an argument in a lack of consideration/precaution executing it?
DeleteAre you guys sure the defender even plays the ball? Because initially I agreed with you but the more I look at it, I think the Turkish attacker plays the ball back with his right foot and the Welsh defender either never touches the ball or touches it EVER so slightly as it's already going away. Either way, it's not like he's "won" a tackle to dispossess his opponent.
DeleteI'm usually all for a very low threshold on intervention of bad penalties. Much lower than what EPL (and even UEFA) seem to like. But I think looks might be deceiving here. This is either a straightforward penalty call or one with enough doubt that it must stay.
Decent performance by Martinez Munuera, let the game flow and think the penalty decision was just about right. Welsh player got the ball but only after fouling the Turkish attacker in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI would like to use this platform to bring to your attention Kazakh referee Bolat Sariev, who handled the Andorra vs Moldova game tonight. I can’t remember one of the regular bloggers having commented on this young referee before, but I was positively surprised of his performance. We all know how feisty and rough games between teams of this calibre can be(come), but Sariev had full control tonight and used his disciplinary very efficiently. Apart from that very active positioning, always close to play and alert and pro-active attitude in risky situations. I hope we see this 33yo more often in European competitions!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the report, having time maybe I will watch this game on next days.
DeleteGame suspended in Amsterdam due to a very serious medical emergency in Hungary’s technical area.

A bizarre course of events I have to say…

78' YC for reckless challenge

It happened under the eyes of referee, but again, after that, positioning issue (game to be considered stopped before his touch for the foul).
90' Mutual misconducts, confrontation, management
https://streambug.org/cv/8e8a83
90'+2 Another confrontation about to happen, management, YC
https://streambug.org/cv/c9cf8b
In this case one can "accuse" the referee of having missed in alertness, he should have definitely run to the zone of the incident to prevent more. Fourth official was close, but after that foul it was easy to expect more to happen.
After what happened repeatedly during last minutes of the game, I must report very good scenes after final whistle, without any tension and players also hugging each other. I think the Slovenian referee faced a rather normal-difficulty game, but it clearly escalated when Denmark scored a few minutes before 90'. This contributed to the confrontations. As you can notice, the game had already started with a certain heat but, due to the goals scored by Spain and rather no discussions, it was going quite well for the Slovenian. Nevertheless, one could (should?) wonder again about his skills, you can see, he tried to control it having also good communication with players, but my feeling is that he didn't impress his authority. This didn't lead to significant troubles for the reasons I reported, but for sure in another game referee could have experienced problems. He can work in being more alert when presence is needed, take as example 90'+2 when a referee, after the incident happened two minutes before, must have all the clues in his mind that something like that could happen again.
All in all, I wouldn't describe this performance as poor, but it was not a very good one, we can still be close to expected level, but we saw, I think once again, he needs some time before handling very challenging games. The disciplinary management was OK, but under this point of view game was not so much demanding, this one was mostly about managing players and their behaviors.
Another point for discussion is the positioning, and trying to be more careful about interfering with play.
110% correct 2YC by Balakin in Stockholm/Solna, maybe it could even have been a DOGSO RC. Probably a bit too much doubt though

Good positioning combined with 'big man' look and treating the players like serious adults who don't need to be overly warned helps Balakin to control games involving teams that play hard but fair football, like it was today. With ill-tempered teams he should be able to adapt his style to more preventative.
I would call his style as no-nonsense approach with good helicopter view. He clearly doesn't want to issue unnecessary cautions and makes everything to not 'provoke' incidents when it would be mandatory (see DtR management scenes, quickly turning back to dissenting team members after cautioning them, etc.). In this game he did well by cautioning every bad foul and turning a blind eye to some incidents maybe even made him more respected by players. The referee with such a style is surely desired by the committee and if the Ukrainian continues like that, he will reach the elite soon.
This guy belongs to famous Soviet/Ukrainian dynasty of referees. If he will keep on improving, he will surely become one of the best referees in Europe
Deletemin 45+2 - Wrong YC for delaying. It is max of 10 sec. to take the goal kick which as it is still 1st half I am not going to support. In case of disent - nothing visible on cameras - no clear action - still not supportable.
DeleteHmmz, the goalkeeper gesticulates at AR2 before the broadcaster switch to replays.

After the famous game in Bulgaria, I decided to take a look at Luxembourg - Bulgaria, referee Juri Frischer, Estonia.
ReplyDelete28' Management, prevention, YC
https://streambug.org/cv/5a3624
Quite fair game until that moment. Very good alertness, running immediately into the scene when noticing that something was about to happen. Physical intervention not common among many referees, but I think that he did well. Correct YC to the Bulgarian player who had tried to make justice by himself, pushing opponent.
Discussion whether the two protagonists of the incident should have been booked as well, but one can agree either both or nobody.
43' YC for step on foot
https://streambug.org/cv/a99284
Very clear and well seen by referee.
44' Good detection of a foul slightly outside penalty area
https://streambug.org/cv/c3bcbc
Possible SPA, but we see that in such incidents, when the action is not quick, referees prefer not to book.
45'+1 PAI
https://streambug.org/cv/32411d
https://streambug.org/cv/1e6108
Good view on the incident, correct decision not to whistle penalty, defender intervened on the ball.
53' Foul to defender and YC for reckless arm
https://streambug.org/cv/752a0a
Second decision is correct, hand in face with a certain force, while for the first incident, UEFA says that referee punished the action by LUX #4 against opponent. It was very difficult to understan what referee had punished, maybe trying some warnings before set pieces would help the referee in having then clear situations to manage.
58' YC for SPA
https://streambug.org/cv/307c71
Unfortunately no replay, I think in the opinion of referee this was YC because otherwise attacker would have easily continued the action by crossing ball / entering penalty area, but my feeling is that this wasn't a 100% necessary sanction.
61' YC for reckless arm
https://streambug.org/cv/ba0a41
In this case in my opinion replay doesn't allow us to have a 100% accuracy about the intensity but there was for sure a contact arm-elbow / face. Should be supported, but in case of no booking, one couldn't have said "mistake". One must trust referee.
82' Possible violent conduct
https://streambug.org/cv/07582c
No replay, impossible to say, we can see a push on the back but maybe even more after that, as it seems player was hit in head. Neverheless, for sure VAR checked.
84' YC for reckless
https://streambug.org/cv/39cda6
Very brutal foul, in case of RC VAR would have supported, but OK not to consider it as clear and obvious mistake, once referee booked.
87' PAI
https://streambug.org/cv/31f873
I think you can whistle this one, but correct by VAR to stay silent, not a clear and obvious mistake, all is about the intensity used by keeper in that action. Attacker looked to have an exaggerate reaction, I woulnd't assess this one as clear penalty.
89' PAI
https://streambug.org/cv/c9fd6c
I think that Tohver from VAR assessed whether Bulgarian defender by falling down caused a foul on #2 LUX. Best replay to assess from 00:22. We see very often referees whistling for such incidents, but in the context of clear and obvious mistake, maybe it's hard to intervene and indeed the check was rather long. Very likely the incident was totally missed by referee. Better replays, surely used by VAR, would have helped us to understand more.
Let's say that at the end Bulgaria definitely lucky to escape from both situations without a penalty, but it was rather up to referee than to VAR to whistle them.
Normal difficulty with challenging last minutes of the game. The final assessment is for me an OK performance with some points for improvement if you back the referee in the last two incidents.
Min 58 is not a YC for SPA as this would had been 2YC (min 43 step on foot) for N17 BUL. I am not sure who is receiving the card.
DeleteYou are right, it was a mistake by broadcaster to report the card for Bulgarian player. In reality (I should have checked UEFA site once again), it was for a LUX player, nr. 4.
DeleteNo fouls by him before, so one should only think about dissenting behavior. Maybe he protested for that situation inside the box, but for me nothing, here what had happened before:

20', 50' - 22CZE on the verge of being sent off but the referee rightly assessed each incident as careless and nothing more; especially good management in 20' as it was ALB player looking for contact with the Czech
https://streambug.org/cv/d56a12
24' - Stern warning to 7ALB after delaying the restart; it could've been easy yellow card but taking into account the no-2YC incident four minutes earlier it was a very smart move by the referee to only warn the player
https://streambug.org/cv/4ea7e6
45' - PAI head strike; well, a tricky incident and technically speaking the Czech player was late and a penalty wouldn't have been a mistake, it was treated as collision by the referee and one may argue whether VAR should have jumped in or not
https://streambug.org/cv/4960ce
51' - PAI tripping; excellent no penalty call! it was 22CZE who actually created the contact with 5ALB and not the other way round, the Albanian player did nothing wrong there - no impeding by deliberately putting himself in front of the attacker, no carting leg out, etc.

64' - Illegal use of arm by 19CZE and then by 18ALB; rather correct no cards
https://streambug.org/cv/dd7ca8

80' - Possible YC 10CZE for reckless step on foot, the Czech was lucky to escape a card in another incident

81', 86' - Two fouls by 18CZE, possible YC for PI but nothing followed
https://streambug.org/cv/8e1cbe
90+1' - Play-on after illegal use of arm by 2ALB (almost impossible to detect) resulted in RC to CZE team member
https://streambug.org/cv/d2de6d
90+2' - YC 22ALB for SPA holding; mandatory
https://streambug.org/cv/3c50fd
Schärer as we know him. Typical modern game manager and he is like one Slovene in this regard. Avoiding controversy by ignoring tricky penalty area incidents (and maybe even being aware that technically it's a foul but not the one VAR can intervene for). Not the biggest technical accuracy, at least 10CZE should've been booked. However, at the end the highlight of the performance will be correct no penalty in 51' and no bigger controversy...
Incident in 45' very difficult to assess, as you said, a penalty couldn't have been denied by VAR, but assessing it as normal collision (referee close with very good view) can be an acceptable argument. However, in such situations, observers can have different ideas, and committee as well, I think unless we talk about a very evident and clear action, supporting referee should be the expected outcome.
DeleteAbsolutely very good in 51', indeed. I think a penalty call would have been supported by VAR for the position of the leg by defender, considering it as trip, but in case a rather wrong assessment, it was attacker going deliberately against defender to get that contact, and no fault by defender. The Swiss was aware of that by making the gesture of playing on.
We can then consider 57' and 68' easily as NO PENALTIES (too soft, if whistled), and so OK in the crucial incidents by Schaerer in a surely very challenging game (I also checked the clips of supporters' management).
