2026 FIFA World Cup Match 36: Tunisia - Japan (discussion)

Tunisia - Japan, game nr. 36 of this tournament and the 1000th game of FIFA World Cup history. Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will officiate it. Collina has specified that the choice has been made technically based on the game, then it's just a coincidence that it occurred to the Romanian to get this one. He will "celebrate" it with a special kit manufactured with golden ornaments.

  1. Ot: Sandro Scharer gave a red card to a Brazilian fan yesterday. It's a shame you don't understand Portuguese because the story is hilarious. But basically, the girl in the video started jokingly imitating him, he laughed, and she started shouting his name (because of the name on the back of her shirt), and he gave her the card.

  3. Push by Jap#15 on the goal action, really close to a foul imo

    1. Overall, not happy with the obvious FIIFA instruction that forceful contact is allowed that disposses a player or interferes with their ability to make a fair play at the ball, including two-handed pushes, as on the Japan goal.

    2. Agree, especially on this incident, clear push and to defend and being pushed at the same time is a bit difficult.

    3. The biggest problem is the contact from behind. Then, how do we educate referees, coaches and players if we can't understand the criteria?

    1. There is GLT, we saw the 3D animation of the GLT

    2. GLT technology showed no goal, replay was a few minutes after

    3. The referee gets a GLT notification on his watch, which he checked as soon as the ball went out of play.

    4. I saw animation, but Kovacs didn't immediately have info on his watch, he waited confirmation from VAR.

    5. No there was a potential PK on the prior action, just a check for a PK.

  5. Impressive fitness, the sprints I think are even better than I remember.

  6. And FK for a push in the back, same action as the one on the first goal. No consistency imo.

    1. I think it’s outside, but clear foul missed

    2. In normal circumstances yes, in this World Cup it’s hard to know exactly where the line is now.

    3. No if the line is not a foul only if it’s a red card then there is a big problem. Here clear foul, both players holding the attacker. Just missed by the crew, nothing with guidelines.

  11. Overall ok performance, easy game even if there was some incidents in the beginning of the game.
For me 1st JAP goal should have been disallowed for a clear push offence on the defender.
Some questions also on the foul detection, nothing more to say about his performance.

  12. I think that FIFA will be satisfied with Kovacs today, surely a 2nd game will follow. The difficulty of Tunisia-Japan was well below what he is used with in UCL. Kovacs had no major problems, the second half was strong, and the first one good enough. And, no cards showed. All the interesting moments were reported above, I don't have anything else to add to highlists, I am looking forward to Mikael's MD2 review.
