Vincic about to retire, and we are ready with the development of other Slovenian referees!
ReplyDeleteWhy is there still no statement from Vincic? The season has started.
Delete@Chefren:
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about an eventual improvement of Italian Refs, as seeming in clear difficulty compared to French, German or English ones for istance?
The situation is very complex, and I think it will be difficult to turn things around quickly. More than help or support, what is really needed, in my opinion, is genuine quality. Unfortunately, that quality doesn't seem to be there at the moment.
DeleteBehind the names that are currently regarded as the leading referees, I believe that Colombo is the only truly noteworthy representative who can realistically aspire to achieve something major. Apart from him, the situation looks rather poor. I think we simply have to wait and go through a transitional period.
Italian referees, in the end, are still receiving UEFA appointments in one way or another, setting Mariani's World Cup call-up aside for a moment. The referees who are considered Elite are still appointed by UEFA, but it is undeniable that the main reason is that they represent Italy. In my view, this actually works against the long-term development of Italian refereeing, because at some point it is necessary to accept reality.
The Italian Referees' Association has, in my opinion, made the same mistake throughout its history: it has been too proud and has never been willing to admit when the overall level of quality was not high enough. It has always praised itself, just as it continues to do today, believing and hoping that everything is fine. I think real change has to start from within the Association itself, beginning with a healthy dose of humility.
Domenico Messina has now been appointed as a sort of technical director to help revive Italian refereeing. With all due respect to him, who, in my opinion, is one of the most outstanding figures in Italian refereeing, both because of his humanity and his insight, we are ultimately still in the same place. What is needed is a genuine positive event, a sudden change of direction. Though, I don't see that happening at the moment. Time will tell; we wll see what the future brings.
In the meantime, it will be interesting to see what happens with Mariani now that he has returned from the World Cup, and whether he will completely overtake Guida in the rangking. Guida has not retired, but at this stage he could be approaching the end of his career. In fact, he is currently the active referees' representative, a role that traditionally goes to Italy's leading active referee, and he also finished at the top of the domestic rankings for the season that has just ended. AIA has already published its annual national awards.
There will therefore be an interesting "duel" between them, maybe. I see Massa, as UEFA third Italian Elite referee, still some way behind.
As for Doveri, I would rather not even discuss about him, because if AIA and Italian refereeing have a problem, allowing Doveri and how he officiates games, it makes the problem even worse, in my opinion.
For the time being, this is a period of stagnation. It is difficult to make firm predictions, but one thing seems clear: these are hard times for Italian refereeing.
its official.. Vincic has retired
ReplyDeleteClement Turpin on linkednl :
As I reflect on this incredible journey, I also want to take a moment to look ahead and express my deepest gratitude.
I would like to sincerely thank Slavko Vincic-who is now also retiring-and Anthony Taylor for their dedication, professionalism, and the fantastic moments we shared on and off the pitch. It has been an absolute honor to work alongside such exceptional colleagues and true professionals of the game.
Thank you for everything, and I wish you all the best in your next chapters."
Tbh, Ivan Bebek already confirmed Vincic's retirement before the final in this interview with Dnevnik Nove TV:
Delete""Well, Slavko is first and foremost one of the best referees in the world right now and now this has come as a crowning achievement. I know that Slavko is finishing with this World Championship, no matter how the World Championship ends, in principle it was his last championship. So he got the opportunity to say goodbye to his truly magnificent career on the most beautiful stage, in the best possible match, and I hereby publicly congratulate him and I am very happy for him."

We knew this, but to be honest, we weren't 100% sure. Some of us thought maybe the final match would change his mind... after Turpin's statement today, we can finally be sure.
DeleteSlavko Vinčić has retired.. Clément Turpin announced it on his LinkedIn account.
ReplyDeleteEveryone except Slavko Vinčić and the Slovenian FA has reported that he has retired.. what a fantastic piece of communication :)
ReplyDeleteWhich referees are included in the UEFA 2026 Talent Programme, and who has been assigned as mentor to each of them?
ReplyDeleteI don't know the exact mentor pairings, but I know that (among others) the referees included in the program are: Barrott (ENG), Milanovic (SRB), Kolaric (CRO), Bandic (BIH), Gidzhenov (BUL), Barbara (MLT) & Stojcevski (MKD)
DeleteBarrott (England)
DeleteStojchevski (North Macedonia)
Gidzhenov (Bulgaria)
Milanovic (Serbia)
Derevinsky (Ukraine)
Barbara (Malta)
Kolaric (Croatia)
Badstübner (Germany)
Bandic (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Women Vuorio, Grigone, Dowle and Wildfeuer,.
I know only two pairings Bandic - De Bleeckere, Barbara - Hauge, but since Badstubner was assigned with Trefoloni, maybe he has him as mentor.
Cakir is Stojcevski's mentor.
DeleteVuorio - Spinelli
DeleteSlavko Vincic has retired. We should open a new page for him. He deserves the best wishes.🙏🏻 what a legend
ReplyDeleteStill, one must wait an official announcement by either him or Slovenian FA. Since the latter seems to be very good in communication about refereeing, maybe we will read the news soon.
ReplyDeleteClement Turpin has already announced it. So Vincic's retirement has also become official 🤷♂️
DeleteWhat is your prediction? When do you think Vinčić will take over Rosetti.
ReplyDeleteI could see Vincic taking over his compatriot Vlado Sajn who has probably fulfilled his lifelong professional goal and can retire in peace.
DeleteBut after Rosetti, the next RefCom president must be Kuipers, if he can somehow coordinate it with managing his Jumbo supermarkets.
It looks like Fenerbahçe fans are upset about Vincic's retirement.. 😂https://x.com/tekyolfener/status/2081439352379396381?s=46
ReplyDeleteIt had already come out that Vincic had a connection to the Fenerbahce Vice President Acun ilicali through Maribor, and even though UEFA knew this, they appointed Vincic to the Benfica-Fenerbahçe playoff game last year. In that match, Vincic disallowed two clear goals for Benfica.
Deleteso it’s normal they are upset
You watch too many TV shows and movies; the only things they have in common are that one was born in Maribor and the other is the owner of the Maribor football team
DeleteIf I am not wrong, Vincic cannot officiate Maribor matches because he is a Maribor fan. Even if there is no connection between them, a connection is naturally drawn.
DeleteThe Galatasaray manager had made a statement about this when Vincic was appointed to the turkish derby, and there was big chaos in Turkey
Vincic officiated the derby brilliantly. His biggest mistake was not giving Fenerbahce 1 clear penalty. i consider it normal that he didn't give it because of the pressure created before the match. Galatasaray's head coach always cries; he only likes Turkish referees.
DeleteA bit of controversy in Scotland in the league cup game between St Mirren and Dunfermline. A goal for St Mirren wrongly disallowed for a foul and then a correct late penalty for Dunfermline. No VAR in the early stages of the league cup.
ReplyDeleteThe controversy mainly surrounds that the referee is a former player who played nearly 200 games for Dunfermline
Shocking management.
DeleteAgreed. Shouldn't be difficult to avoid giving him Dunfermline games and choosing to do it for the first time in a live televised match with significant consequences for progression was bizarre
DeleteOT: ITs maybe to early, but my we speak about potential EuroU21 2027 referees next year?
ReplyDeleteI assume many of them will come from the mass promotion of referees to First last December: Alberola Rojas, Vergoote, Gidzhenov, Pignard, Kolaric, Schlager, Hennessy, Colombo, Milanovic, Derevinsky, Matosa...
DeleteA more interesting and 'immediate' question should be the UEFA referees that will attend U17 World Cup in autumn.
DeleteLast year they were Fotias, Vergoote, van der Eijk, Derevinsky, Colombo, Barbu & Saggi.
Vincic and Taylor are a huge loss for UEFA and FIFA. I'm wondering which referees will step up to take their places in the elite category.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if Marciniak will continue?
I hope so
DeleteOfficial.. vincic Has retired https://www.nzs.si/novica/Slavko_Vincic_po_finalu_svetovnega_prvenstva_uradno_sklenil_zgodovinsko_kariero?id=63598
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't he continue until EURO 2028?
DeleteAsk him
DeleteTwo extra years of immense efforts at the age of 46-48. Probably, he didn‘t want that and just finished on the top of what you can achieve, refereeing a wc final.
DeleteThe Slovenian Football Association has issued an official statement:
ReplyDeleteFarewell, Slavko... All the best
Why is there no dedicated thread for the legendary referee Slavko Vincic?
ReplyDeleteSometimes I'm busy with real life ;)
DeleteThank you for the excellent work, which surely takes a lot of time. In that case, it is certainly acceptable for the write-up regarding Vinic to take a few days as well.
DeletePolish referee in Dynamo Kyiv ?

ReplyDeleteBased on what I heard from my friends from Serbia, Frank de Bleeckere becomes the new head of the referee committee
Regarding IFAB Circular 34 about mistaken identity.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised to see media outlets around the world reporting that "IFAB admitted the implementation was incorrect."
To me, that is not at all what the text says:
The use of the mistaken identity clause to deal with simulation during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ was well received and will be included in the detailed review of the VAR protocol announced in circular no. 32. However, it may not be used as such until that review is concluded.
In any case, there is a serious issue with IFAB's communication skills. If only they had explained how this rule would be applied before the tournament...
https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/02a7-2135f8a7851f-c93c3439abcf-1000--european-football-aligns-on-refereeing-matters-ahead-of-2026/
ReplyDeleteHere a news on UEFA site.
Following the recent IFAB amendments to the VAR protocol, instructions were shared about the correct interpretation of "mistaken identity" situations, exactly in line with the welcome explanations offered by IFAB with their circular letter no. 34. More generally, it was reiterated that, in accordance with the protocol, VAR must only intervene in situations of "clear and obvious" error.
CIRCULAR 34:
"VAR protocol – mistaken identity A yellow card (caution) which is not a second yellow card can only be reviewed to identify the player who committed the offence that was penalised; the offence itself cannot be reviewed/changed. The use of the mistaken identity clause to deal with simulation during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ was well received and will be included in the detailed review of the VAR protocol announced in circular no. 32. However, it may not be used as such until that review is concluded. "
So if I get it correctly, it was well received but it's suspended. We must wait for a next update in case, as for now the mistaken identity is back to what we knew, just giving a card to a wrong player, but not making a technicl assessment between a simulation and a foul.
What's more strange is that they say players must leave for 1 minute after play is stopped for a head injury. This was never followed in the WC. They never waited 1 minute.
DeleteEven the referees don't fully know the rules, yet and expect us to understand the rules . Pinheiro and the VAR have put their names to a scandal, and they must be held accountable."
ReplyDeleteIt’s outrageous.
DeleteVAR simply followed the interpretation that the RefCom communicated to the referees during the clinic held in Miami in the days leading up to the start of the World Cup.
This is just ridiculous, we are now a month away from the new season and we don’t even know the rules, every competition can have different rules for covering his mouth for example and even the keeper gaining time in PL and now this circular. IFAB must stop this nonsense with the circular this is horrible for every referees. Hope everything will be clear soon.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but the situation is even worse given the reality that many official matches have already been played under the new LotG.
DeleteWhat was ridiculous is FIFA making unilateral changes... Covering the mouth and overextending mistaken identity. These were not issues prior to the WC.
DeleteDisagree @YK all the rules changes were taken by IFAB and not only by FIFA (even if it was pushed by Collina), so this is a change for everyone and because some people think this new rule wasn't great we are changing it or postponing it. If there is a change, then they should do it in march like every year not after 2 months especially when the biggest tournament used it.
DeleteBut agree on the fact that implementing new rules and letting every competition decide if it's apply or not is stupid, and also this new trend to use circular which is terrible for every referee at every stage.
UEFA STATEMENT ON THE TIMES ARTICLE
ReplyDelete"This crosses a line that football's governing institutions should never cross. UEFA takes it extremely seriously. So should every National Football Association. So should every stakeholder: leagues, clubs, players, supporters, governments and everyone who cares about the future of the game.
The soul and governance of football are not assets to trade - especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially.
None of us are the owners of football. It is not FIFA's to sell.
The duel FIFA - UEFA continues.
ReplyDeleteFIFA Spokesperson:
“FIFA's interpretation of Mistaken Identity was consistently applied during the FIFA World Cup. There were two instances in which a player was mistakenly identified as having committed a yellow card offence and the VAR advised the referee to correct the factual error caused by the opponent's simulation.
“The simulation itself cannot be disputed and it should not result in a disciplinary sanction against an opponent that may then lead to further consequences, such as a sending off for a second yellow card or a match suspension for accumulated cautions.
“We do not consider this to have been a referee or VAR error and the decision restored justice. We note IFAB’s comments in its Circular, we have been in contact with them throughout and they confirmed that this interpretation is valid, that it was well received and that it will form part of the discussion on revisions to the VAR Protocol, as discussed at the last AGM.”
My opinion: it is now clear that while FIFA and Collina would like to keep this one, UEFA and especially Rosetti are fully against the decision. My point of view is close to UEFA, I admit, because how it was applied during WC it was just made to allow an intervention on a technical issue, it was not a mistaken identity, a referee knows very well that if a player commits simulation, he must be booked, so what is the sense of thinking about a mistaken identity? They should have made it more immediate: we will intervene after all simulation costing a wrong YC to opponent, but that's not about a mistaken identity, I repeat, this can be just a mistake by referee, so VAR wouild re officiate the game.
How far we will go?
However, it's very sad if the two main governing bodies of world football, FIFA and UEFA, have ended up taking different positions on the interpretation of the Laws of the Game. The people who will ultimately pay the price are the thousands of referees around the world, who, from the very start of the new season, will have to adapt to whichever approach their national association decides to follow. Such a lack of uniformity on the Laws of the Game is unacceptable, it creates unnecessary confusion, and undermines one of the fundamental principles of refereeing: applying the same rules in the same way, everywhere.
Not that the situation was better before, of course. However, if the division has become evident even among those who are supposed to provide guidance about rules, then we are in an even worse position.
Bulgarian ref in Zagreb - well that was level of second Bulgarian league refereeing. Funny.
ReplyDeleteOFR in Gidzhenov game, RC for DOGSO, crucial for the outcome.

Absolutely correct by VAR, without foul, player would have controlled ball being alone, quite sure.
The Bulgarian assessed a SPA, he should have given red as on field decision...

I was quite surprised... It turns out Vincic is originally Bosniac. His family lives in the village of prnjavor in Bosnia. Before the final match, they interviewed his uncle and the mayor of prnjavor.
ReplyDeletehttps://lat.rtrs.tv/vijesti/vijest.php?id=653427
That also explains why, in the well-known incident that made headlines a few years ago, he was in Bosnia. It also explains why so many Bosnians have enthusiastically celebrated his recent successes on social media (including many Bosnian referees on the blog's page). I didn't know that either.
DeleteSo even two „Bosnians“ in the WC final. :)
DeleteI wonder, whether the communication with Makhadmeh happened in their language.
+ Bosnia football legend Edin Džeko left comment and likes on the announcement video on Instagram.
DeleteI remember that many people on the forum were saying that Vinčić should have been appointed for the Italy vs. Bosnia playoff final game 😂😂
DeleteA question perhaps no one has asked yet: Since the squads for the first half of the UEFA category season were announced a month ago and included Taylor and Vincic, who have since retired, what will happen now? Will they be replaced or will we wait until January?
ReplyDeleteThere aren't categories movements outside the two updates made during a year (June and December), so nothing will change until January. However one can think UEFA could have been aware about both retirements.
DeletePrnjavor belongs to the state of Bosnia, but more Serbs live there, and Vincic is of Serb origin.

DeleteReally sorry for D’Hondt here.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to check carefully the incident before writing, here the clip:
https://streamable.com/p3srup
Indeed the Belgian referee can see and realizes what happens.
It's unacceptable and UEFA will not be happy.
Red card should have been given.
We can remember Moen and the famous incident, that's less blatant for me, but still at a very clear level to be punished.
It's not FIFA here, but maybe a situation like this woulod have had a red card as consequence even during WC.
A problem can be that such situations are not written in detail in LotG and a referee tries to use always common sense, but one should realize that he has been attacked here.
Another incident from the game, penalty to Fenerbahçe:
https://streamable.com/ko1cms
Not a 100% clean call, attacker was very clever here (arm on defender), but supportable decision.
I am in shock right now. Did the player only get a yellow card? 😟😟
DeleteIf this was at the WC,only warning would be given.😉
DeleteI guess D'Hondt differentiated this behaviour (performing a shirt pulling to show the referee what was the foul in penalty area) from typical aggressive shirt pulling while dissenting at the referee. I would like to know what is RefCom view!
DeleteIncredibly bad image for D'Hondt and also for UEFA. Protecting the image of the game whilst this only receives a yellow card. Unbelievable for this level
DeleteWtf!! UEFA should ban this player for a long time.
Delete@eurosoccerref No, the player does that move on purpose. Then he realizes what he is doing and immediately pulls a U-turn.
DeleteBandić faced a much more challenging second half than first half, having to manage a highly physical contest that produced eight yellow cards, numerous dangerous tackles, and several tactical fouls stopping promising attacks (SPAs). Despite the increased intensity, he maintained control of the match and dealt with the disciplinary incidents consistently.
ReplyDeleteHis biggest test came in the closing stages when he awarded a penalty to Víkingur. Following a VAR review, the decision was correctly overturned after it was determined that there had been a foul on the Hapoel Be'er Sheva goalkeeper in the build-up.

DeleteDallas is becoming a very well respected VAR official.
DeleteWhy are the referees for some matches still not being announced?i
DeleteDallas has already had a few European games this year. Certainly trusted by UEFA.
DeleteIt always seems to be the case that some games get confirmed later. Perhaps to do with waiting for permutations regarding Europa League and Conference league games before finalising appointments
